DEFINITIONS OF ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS VEGETATION PRODUCTS The vegetation environmental indicators are derived from the SPOT-VEGETATION and PROBA-V NDVI (Normalized Differential Vegetation Index), representative of vegetation vigor, at 1km spatial resolution provided by the Land Component of Copernicus Programme: (http://land.copernicus.eu/global): andvi t = NDVIt avgndvi dt The NDVI anomaly represents the deviation of the NDVI value from the 10-year average (avgndvi dt ) for the same period. A positive anomaly means an NDVI above the average and can be interpreted as a good or very good productivity period and/or an early growing season, and inversely for a negative value. This indicator is suitable for monitoring the growing season. NGI (or ICN)= 100*(NDVI t NDVI min )/(NDVI max -NDVI min ) The Normalized Growth Index represents the difference between the observed NDVI and the minimum NDVI, rescaled to the signal maximum amplitude. The formulation of the indicator is similar to the VCI, but min and max correspond to the absolute seasonal minimum and maximum computed over a 10-year time-series (called in the text Long Term (LT) time series). It provides information on the current vegetation conditions with respect to the potential growth and is suitable for monitoring the growing season. RAINFALL PRODUCTS The products are derived from the FEWSNET Rainfall Estimation (RFE) dekadal (10 day) imagery. The RFE imagery combines Meteosat infrared data, rain gauge reports from the global telecommunications system, and microwave satellite observations to provide daily rainfall estimate in mm at an approximate horizontal resolution of 10 km. Link: http://earlywarning.usgs.gov/fews/africa. apcum t = Pcum t avgpcum dt (mm and %) The Pcum anomaly represents the deviation of monthly cumulated rainfall estimation (Pcum) from the climatic monthly average (avgpcum dt ) computed based on a long Term period (1995 to present). This product allows highlighting of the location and the intensity of the rainfall anomaly. It is provided both in percentage and in mm. The SST anomaly represents the deviation of the average SST (SSTm) for January to June for 2014 from the 11-year average (2003-2013) for the same months (SSTy). A negative anomaly means SST is below average and can be interpreted as good conditions for biological production for upwelling regions, and vice versa. achl = Chlm Chly The chlorophyll-a anomaly represents the deviation of the average chlorophyll-a (Chlm) for January to June for 2014 from the 11-year average (2003-2014) for the same months (Chly). A positive anomaly means chlorophyll-a above average and can be interpreted as good conditions for phytoplankton growth in marine ecosystems, and vice versa. 2

DEFINITION DES INDICATEURS ENVIRONNEMENTAUX PRODUITS LIES A LA VEGETATION Les indicateurs environnementaux de la végétation découlent du NDVI SPOT-VEGETATION et PROBA-V (Indice de végétation par la différence normalisée), qui reflète la vigueur de la végétation, avec une résolution spatiale de 1 km, fourni par Land Component of Copernicus Programme: (http://land.copernicus.eu/global): andvi t = NDVIt avgndvi dt L anomalie du NDVI représente l écart de la valeur du NDVI par rapport à la moyenne décennale (avgndvidt) pour la même période. Une anomalie positive signifie un NDVI supérieur à la moyenne et peut être interprété comme une bonne ou très bonne période de productivité et/ou une saison de croissance précoce, et inversement pour une valeur négative. Cet indicateur est tout à fait indiqué pour suivre la campagne agricole. NGI (or ICN)= 100*(NDVI t NDVI min )/(NDVI max -NDVI min ) L Indice de Croissance Normalisé représente la différence entre le NDVI observé et le NDVI minimum, ramené à l échelle de l amplitude maximum du signal. La formulation de l indicateur est analogue à celle du VCI, mais la valeur minimum et maximum correspond au minimum et maximum saisonnier absolu calculé sur une série chronologique de 10 ans (LT - Long Term). Cet indicateur fournit des informations sur l état actuel de la végétation par rapport à la croissance potentielle et est tout à fait indiqué pour le suivi de la campagne agricole. PRODUITS LIES AUX PRECIPITATIONS Ces produits sont dérivés de l imagerie décadaire d estimation des précipitations FEWSNET (RFE). L imagerie RFE combine des données infrarouges Météosat, des rapports de mesure de pluviomètres de terrain véhiculés par le système de télécommunication mondial, et des observations satellitaires micro-ondes, afin de fournir des estimations quotidiennes de pluviométrie en millimètres à une résolution approximative de 10 km. Ce produit permet de faire ressortir le lieu et l intensité de l anomalie pluviométrique. Il est présenté en pourcentage et en millimètres. LES PRODUITS MARINS 3

Les produits sont dérivés des bases de données mensuelles MODIS de chlorophylle-a et de température des eaux de surface (SST outes). Lien: http://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov asst = SSTm - SSTy Les anomalies de TES représentent les écarts entre les données moyennes de TES (SSTm) de janvier à juin 2014 et la moyenne 2003-2013 des mêmes mois (SSTy). Une anomalie négative veut dire que le TES est inférieure à la moyenne et cela peut être interprétée comme de bonnes conditions pour la production biologique des régions des remontées d eaux, et vice versa. achl = Chlm Chly Les anomalies de chlorophylle-a représentent les déviations entre les valeurs moyennes de chlorophylle-a (Chlm) pour la période de janvier à juin 2014 et la moyenne sur onze ans (2003-2013) pour ces mêmes mois (Chly). Une anomalie positive signifie que la chlorophylle-a est supérieure à la moyenne et peut être interprétée comme représentant de bonnes conditions pour la croissance phytoplanctonique au sein des écosystèmes marins, et viceversa. 4

DEFINIÇÕES DE INDICADORES AMBIENTAIS PRODUTOS DE VEGETAÇÃO Os indicadores ambientais de vegetaҫão são derivados do NDVI SPOT-VEGETATION e PROBA-V (Índice de Vegetaҫão Diferencial Normalizado), representativo do vigor da vegetaҫão, com uma resoluҫão espacial de 1km fornecida pelo Componente Terrestre do Programa Copernicus (http://land.copernicus.eu/global): andvi t = NDVIt avgndvi dt A anomalia do NDVI representa o desvio do valor do NDVI da média de 10 anos (avgndvidt), para o mesmo período. Uma anomalia positiva significa um NDVI acima da média e pode ser interpretada como um período de boa ou muito boa produtividade, e/ou um período vegetativo precoce, e o inverso ocorre para um valor negativo. Esse indicador é adequado para a monitorizaҫão do período vegetativo. NGI (or ICN)= 100*(NDVI t NDVI min )/(NDVI max -NDVI min ) O Índice de Crescimento Normalizado representa a diferenҫa entre o NDVI observado e o NDVI mínimo, redimensionada para a amplitude máxima do sinal. A formulaҫão do indicador é parecida com o VCI, no entanto, mínimo e máximo correspondem ao mínimo e ao máximo sazonal absolutos computados durante uma série cronológica de 10 anos (intitulada no texto: série cronológica de Longo Prazo (LT)). Essa formulaҫão fornece informaҫões sobre as condiҫões atuais de vegetaҫão com relaҫão ao potencial de crescimento, sendo também adequada para a monitorizaҫão do período vegetativo. PRODUTOS DE PLUVIOSIDADE Os produtos são derivados de imagens da Estimativa de Pluviosidade (RFE) FEWSNET, obtidas durante um período 10 dias (dekad). A imagens da RFE combinam dados infravermelhos Meteosat, relatórios relatórios de pluviômetro do sistema global de telecomunicaҫões e observaҫões de satélite micro-ondas, para fornecer estimativa diária de pluviosidade em mm a uma resoluҫão horizontal aproximada de 10km. Esse produto permite dar ênfase à localizaҫão e à intensidade da anomalia de pluviosidade, e o mesmo é fornecido na forma de percentagem e em mm. PRODUTOS MARINHOS Os produtos são derivados de conjuntos de dados mensais MODIS de clorofila-a e temperatura da superfície do mar (SST). Uma anomalia negativa significa que a SST está abaixo do normal, e pode ser interpretada como boas condiҫões para a produҫão biológica nas regiões de ressurgência, e vice-versa. 5

Uma anomalia positiva significa que a clorofila-a está acima da media e pode ser interpretada como boas condiҫões para o crescimento de fitoplâncton em ecossistemas marinhos, e vice-versa.
