Petite initiation à l alchimie des ouvrages d albâtres Little introduction to alabaster works alchemy Gypse tendre, veines cristallines, calcaire friable une structure naturelle chaotique. Un nœud coloré, une veine grise, autant de points de cristallisation au coeur de la roche, magnifiques impuretés minérales, dessin unique de chaque pierre. Surprenante, cette matière très tendre, facile à creuser, résiste parfois et se brise violemment, lorsque la lame rencontre l une des veinures qui la traversent. Et c est alors la pierre entière qui est irrécupérable. Travailler l albâtre, c est danser avec cette tension intérieure, accepter la complexité aléatoire et la surprise. Sa tendresse, atout admirable pour le sculpteur, a longtemps constitué un autre obstacle majeur au développemnt de son utilisation en architecture d intérieur. La force de l équipe rassemblée autour d Alain Ellouz est d avoir mis au point un traitement original des surfaces et une méthodologie de travail spécifique à l albâtre. Le résultat est là : une nouvelle matière dure, résistante, imperméable aux taches, qui conserve toute sa beauté naturelle, propre au design de (tables, bars, sols Arrachée à la terre sous forme de simples gros cailloux, l albâtre donne la plupart du temps des plaques de 50 cm * 50 cm, et parfois jusqu à 130 cm * 100 cm pour certains blocs. Pour réaliser des ouvrages d envergure on doit donc composer une véritable mosaïque grand format. Au sein du lot de pierres à disposition, on élabore un choix minutieux et à chaque fois spécifique : de la tonalité des pierres et de leur voisinage harmonieux dépend en effet la beauté du tableau final. On n en peut rien décider par avance, il faut avoir la matière en main. La création a lieu en atelier, dans le moment, portée par une grande liberté d esprit et une attention soutenue. Nous sommes ainsi très attentifs à capter la luminosité particulière d une pierre, à en révéler les dessins intérieurs, à harmoniser les tonalités chromatiques de l ensemble de la composition, à oser aussi. La complexe beauté de l albâtre, cachée, intérieure, profonde, se révéle seulement grâce à un apport subtil de lumière. Par cet effleurement caressant, la ponctuation lumineuse éclaire et sublime la création minérale enfouie au coeur de la pierre. Cette telle complexité de mise en oeuvre explique la rareté des créations d une certaine ampleur réalisées en albâtre. Il ne peut ici s agir que d un travail d une équipe très spécialisée maîtrisant et comprenant cette pierre unique. Le souvenir du geste manuel est partout présent, dans les assemblages, le polissage, la mise en lumière Les réalisations d albâtre architectural s insèrent dans de magnifiques projets d architecture intérieure. Secondant la vision de l architecte ou du designer, l équipe de création étudie, calcule et réalise la maquette du projet. Ensuite s opère le processus de recherche artistique, pour trouver l accord juste, la correspondance harmonieuse des pierres, avec chaque projet. C est alors que s instaure un dialogue riche et sensible entre les différents acteurs, pour la mise à jour de réalisations uniques et inoubliables. Tender gypsum, crystalline veins, crumbly limestone a chaotic natural structure. A coloured crux, a grey vein, so many crystallisation points in the rock s heart, magnificent mineral impurities, unique composition of each stone. This surprising, very tender matter, easy to carve, sometimes resists and sometimes breaks violently when the blade meets one of its veining. Then the whole stone is damaged beyond repair. Working with alabaster is dancing with this inner tension, accepting unpredictable complexity and surprise. Its tenderness, an admirable asset for the sculptor, was also a long time obstacle to the develoment of its use in interior design. The strength of the team gathered by Alain Ellouz is to have developed original treatments for alabaster surfaces and a specific work methodology. The result: a new hard material, resistant, unstainable, that keeps all of its natural beauty and which is proper to design tables, bars, grounds... Extracted from the earth as simple big stones, alabaster is most of the time cut into 50cm*50cm plates and sometimes until 130cm*100cm. For greater scope projects one will need to compose a real large-frame mosaic. Within the available stone-lot, we carry out a meticulous and each time specific choice, as the beauty of the final piece depends on the stones tonality and the harmony they may generate when assembled together. Nothing can be decided in advance, one must feel the material. Creation takes place in the workshop, in the moment, driven by a free spirit and sustained care. That is why we pay great attention to seizing a stone s specific luminosity, revealing its inner drawings and harmonizing the chromatic tonalities of the whole composition -but also just daring. The complex beauty of alabaster is hidden, internal, deep. It is only revealed by a subtle light input. With this caressing touch, the light punctuation enlights and sublimates the mineral creation concealed inside the stone s heart. Such realisation complexity accounts for the scarcity of relatively large albaster creations. This can only be the work of a very high skilled team, that has both the mastery and understanding of this unique stone. The hand gesture can be felt everywhere, in the compositions, the polishing, the lighting Architectural alabaster realisations become part of gorgeous interior design projects. Assisting the architect or the designer s vision, our creation team will study, calculate and deliver the first draft. Then occurs the artistic research process which leads to the appropriate choice of stones and their harmonious connection, within each project. It is then within a rich and sensible dialog between all protagonists that unique and unforgettable realisations emerge. 78 79
