Greg Semu est un Samoan. Les Samoans constituent la deuxième population polynésienne après les Maoris de Nouvelle- Zélande. L archipel des Samoa est peuplé depuis plus de 3 000 ans par un peuple polynésien, la langue samoane est peut être la plus ancienne encore parlée en Océanie. Dans les années 70, sa famille émigre en Nouvelle Zélande. Greg Semu grandit à Auckland, au moment ou la ville devenait la plus grande, la plus hétérogène et la plus dangereuse des métropoles du pacifique. Le racisme, le chômage, la pauvreté, la concentration de populations venues de toutes les iles du Pacifique, brutalement immergées dans la culture urbaine occidentale, la rupture avec l organisation sociale traditionnelle ont provoqué une crise identitaire profonde. Greg Semu a choisi de revendiquer ses racines culturelles et la fierté de sa différence. Il renoue avec la tradition du peuple samoan en se soumettant à la longue et douloureuse épreuve initiatique du Pé a. Les cinq tableaux photographiques de la suite «The Last Cannibal Supper» présentés pour la première fois en Europe, sont une sorte d hybridation. Les codes de représentation de la peinture religieuse occidentale sont rejoués par des figurants kanaks, vêtus de costumes traditionnels en fibres d écorce pour une cérémonie sacrée.
