Board of Directors Corner PSYCHOLOGICAL BENEFITS OF GIVING DID YOU KNOW? Helping others not only makes a person feel good, but it may also increase physical and emotional well-being. Several studies have indicated that being generous has profound effects on how a person thinks and feels. One such study from researchers at Cornell University uncovered that volunteering increases one's energy, sense of mastery over life and self-esteem. It also promotes feelings of positivity, which may strengthen and enhance the immune system. According to psychologist Robert Ornstein and physician David Sobel, authors of "Healthy Pleasures," they talk about a "helper's high." This is a sense of euphoria that volunteers experience when helping others. It can be described as a sense of vitality and a warm glow. It has been compared to a runner's high and may be attributed to a release of endorphins. Conseil d administration Here are a few more health benefi ts that may result from being altruistic: an activation of emotions that are key to good health, lower stress levels, longer periods of calm after the generous act, improved mood, and a potentially longer life span. There are many ways to give back and experience these physical and psychological benefi ts, including: volunteering at a hospital, sharing experiences at a school, volunteering at a local park, donating unused items, like clothes, reading to children at a library, and of course volunteering at the Comox MFRC. Volunteering as board member with your local MFRC will for sure increase your sense of belonging to the community, increase your sense of accomplishment by making a difference in people s lives and it may increase your physical and emotional well-being. WHAT DOES THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS DO AT YOUR COMOX MFRC? The Board of Directors is the legal authority for the Comox MFRC. As a member of the Board, a Director acts in a position of trust on behalf of the local Canadian Forces community and is responsible for the effective governance of the organization. The Board of Directors is responsible for the governance of the MFRC, including strategic planning, evaluation, human resources, fi nances, fundraising, risk management, advocacy and community relations. The skills and knowledge of Board members are critical to the success of the organization. Here are a few of the skills and knowledge you may develop while volunteering as board member: Teamwork, active listening, fundraising, planning ability, human resource management, research and writing, fi nancial expertise, confl ict resolution, time management. Comox MFRC Board of Directors meetings are the last Wednesday of each month, held in the Conference Room of the 19 Wing Fitness & Community Centre. Start time is 6:00 pm. Meetings are open to all 19 Wing members and their families. SHOWERS MAY FLOWERS SPRING SHOWERS BRINGS MAY FLOWERS! The rain has been in full force. The days can be dark and dreary, and even the best of us can get a little down; however, the spring can help to reawaken your body after a long winter. Many people experience mild depression, lack of motivation, and low energy during the rainy season. Luckily, there s a lot you can do. Here are some practical ways to beat the rain and keep your energy high and mood lifted. EXERCISE Exercise isn t only for maintaining your weight and staying healthy. Thursdays April 18, May 16, & June 20 9:30 am - 11:30 am Conference Room Free Note: Limited child care available. It s great for relieving the stresses of life. Plus, the effects of a good workout can last for several hours. Exercise also helps your mind by releasing those feel good chemicals that improve your mood. EAT A HEALTHY DIET What and when you eat has a great affect on your mood and energy. Try to incorporate more complex carbohydrates (whole wheat breads, brown rice, veggies, fruit) and get your daily 8 cups of water. These healthy foods provide your body (and mind) with nutrients, and stabilize your blood sugar and your energy levels. TREAT YOURSELF Having something to look forward to can keep you motivated. Plan something that s exciting to you - a weekend trip, a day at the spa, a party, or special event. 1-800 -268-7708 Counselling Services Tamara Vojnic, BA, BSW, RSW Confidential Voicemail 250-339-8211 x 8286 Tamara.Vojnic@forces.gc.ca Carrie Bisson, BSW, RSW Confidential Voicemail 250-339-8211 x 7128 Carrie.Bisson@forces.gc.ca GET SOCIAL SUPPORT Don t underestimate the power of friends, family, co-workers, and neighbours. Something as simple as a phone call, a chat over coffee, or a nice email or letter can brighten your mood. RELAX! You re busy! Work, class, family, friends, appointments, meetings. Try to spend a few minutes each day doing nothing! Read a book or magazine, go to bed early, try some meditations, or take a yoga class. CATCH SOME ZZZZ S People naturally want to sleep a little bit more during the dark months. Aim for 7-8 hours each night, and try to keep your bedtime and waking time consistent. Also try not to oversleep - those 12- hour snoozes on the weekend can actually make you MORE tired. Bilingual service is 24/7.
