Cours: / Course: CHG 4361 Thermal Conversion Processes for Energy Production Description du cours: / Course Description: This course will aim to provide an overall understanding of combustion processes, and thermal technologies that are essential to heating and power production applications in Canada and worldwide. Particular emphasis will be given to thermal power production in Canada, and oil sands developments. The course will also cover new technologies like combustion with pure oxygen, chemical looping combustion and gasification. Finally, the course will look at the implications of controls on greenhouse gas emissions as they may affect the future use of combustion processes. Cours: / Course: CHG 8145 Theory of Rate Pocesses. Description du cours: / Course Description: The rates at which processes occur in the chemical industry are the essence of chemical engineering technology. As process driving-forces such as thermal, concentration, and pressure gradients increase, they represent larger departures from equilibrium. The greater the departure from equilibrium, the greater the irreversible entropy production of a process and the less energy efficient it becomes. Entropy production calculations will be performed for several processes, including the rate of pumping fluids through pipes, the rate of transferring heat in exchangers, the rate of transferring mass in separators such as membranes, and the rates of thermal or catalytic reactions. Explanations of entropy will be given in terms of equilibrium thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and information theory. Concepts such as microscopic reversibility and the Onsager reciprocal relations will be used to express steady-state transport phenomena in terms of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. A link will be made between the large driving forces (traditionally used to minimize equipment size and capital cost) and the accompanying entropy production (that decreases energy efficiency and increases carbon dioxide emissions).
