Constance Nouvel explores reality stratas, breaks them down and builds them back up. Recasting the concept of the decisive moment, she proceeds rather by the progressive emergence of photographed images. In this sense, her current work finds its antecedents in her video Découvrements [Uncoverings] (2008), in which we discover the insides of a house. A hand removes successive layers of paper with a scalpel and rooms appear one after the next in what are a series of layers of both visual material and meaning. In Décors I and Décors II (2010), Constance Nouvel confirms her penchant for a certain type of artifice, bringing true and false into close relationship. In Japan she took photos of the insides of aquariums, producing strange reconstructions of a false reality and, while travel is a source of inspiration to her, the tractable exoticism captured here is reminiscent rather of the artifice of 19th century panoramic wall hangings and the first panoramas, the forebears of cinema. The issue of image duplication and what we are actually looking at is also at the heart of Constance Nouvel s work. Thus the absurd, poetic scene in Désœuvrer le tableau [Unwork] - a canvas mounted on a stretcher and placed on a cushion - appears alongside a darker sister image. This sister image is rendered on a piece of aluminium which appears to be coming away from the frame, as if pulled off to reveal what lies underneath. No less sculptural, Double-fond [False bottom] (2010) is composed of two identical images superimposed a few centimetres from each other, the first torn evenly into squares, allowing the second to appear through the cracks in a false bottom effect. Constance Nouvel manipulates materials, often enriching her photos in a way that makes her work more akin to sculpture. She works with photography but acts on her exposures as an artist. For example, a plate of plexiglass has been fixed onto Décors II as a perspective frame, giving additional depth but only over part of the area of the image. In La 25ème image [The 25th photo] (2010), she uses a gouge to work the thickness of a block of prints glued one onto another, leaving successive layers to come through like the inclines on a geological map. Finally, framing takes on crucial importance in Constance Nouvel s work, producing picture in picture works. Take Enième vue [To the nth degree] (2010) for example, in which the skyscrapers of a modern city appear recursively both in the background in the sky and in the foreground on a screen, perhaps a telescopic monitor, held by a man with his back to us. In a similar vein, Hall (2010) serves as a synthesis for her preoccupation with frames/screens: an opaque glass door masks the entrance to a building. At the same time it also opens up and structures the space, serving as a screen both to hide our projections behind and display them on: an attempt to circumscribe personal space rendered through the subjectivity of the observer (so might read a definition of Constance Nouvel s work!). Constance Nouvel s approach to photography took her straight to the crux of the matter: What (else), in 2012, is there to say about this most consummate of contemporary art forms? A question of immense scope then, artist versus monument, but also very much the archaeologist excavating the foundations of the temple: choice of subject, composition, development techniques, medium, framing, presentation of works. What s our frame of reference here? Real world, or rather, as the artist seems to be saying, artefacts, incorporated elements suggestive of the photographer s subjectivity? Constance Nouvel started by meticulously drawing up the catalogue of her investigations and dissecting what goes into creating a photo. In an effort to bring out what often remains concealed on the negative, the artist seems to want to peel away the adornments that have tended to constitute the refrain of a certain type of photographic practice. She then enters into a dialogue, one could almost say a duel, with her shots. Choosing apparently anonymous and often figurative motifs - a rainbow, an abstract landscape, a sunset -, she goads her photos, searching out their limits and inventorying reactions step by step. How do images respond when played around with, torn, pared back, split into two, bent or enlarged? What does displaying them on the floor rather than mounting them in frames on the wall do to them? What do they tell us when stuck to a steel plate rather than a plastic or aluminium strip? While photography may be an imprint of the world, Constance Nouvel s works reveal that the imprint is always (re)shaped by the person behind the lens. And this is just as significant as any mimetic process. Pushed to its extreme, this distinction leads to the discovery that each image requires, even itself impels, its own processing. By this logic the image becomes a subject in its own right and in concert with its auteur, pitches in with its own take, compelling the artist to approach it according to an individualised, non-systematic process. Nouvel s photos become actions in themselves, gestures resulting from an instant of dialogue between the image and the photographer in a quest for the limits of subjectivity. In what is a supreme paradox then, the artist will have placed her photographs in a realm of mechanical non-reproducibility. Constance Nouvel s photos are visual objects doted with a temporal and performative quality (1). They are images in situation, to be experienced in and with their specific environments. In lending herself here to the exercise of the photo essay for magazine, medium of reproduction par excellence, Constance Nouvel has confirmed the logic behind her work whereby her approach to the visual object is contextual, this visual object is shaped by its new medium and this medium uses its own lexicon to return us to the image. Constance Nouvel s photographic objects are mysterious entities. Immobile, mute and steeped in absence, they seem to hold the precious secret of a reality preserved. Their apparent stasis is however deceptive and the titles of some of the works are suggestive of slight movement (Diffraction, Translation, Dépliement [Unfolding]), providing clues where the artist has herself thrown us off the scent. A far cry from current digital processing techniques, she uses traditional prints as materials in themselves. They become the building blocks of her works, receptacles of movement by means of which they are then transformed according to logical method. Once an image is captured on paper, it undergoes a metamorphosis expressive of shifts in time that are both the work of memory and sculptural/artistic experimentation. The final object, the definitive, realised form, emerges from this process. It calls on various stratified dimensions resulting from the assembly of reproductions and filters superimposed onto reality as represented and transcribing the subjectivity of a perspective that is itself in movement. Noémie Monier, 2013 This gradual formal development provides the platform for a skilful outmanoeuvring of and liberation from the initial constraints of photography. Each image takes on a singular existence through the adoption of a format, composition and medium of its own. The redefinition of constraints is itself a game that is played out at several levels. Aware of the limitations she has placed on herself in choosing to produce unique works, Constance Nouvel may well now find that exploring series is a way of avoiding systematism. Her Décors, which she has been putting together since 2009, seem to be a start. Throughout her body of work, the artist has used the medium of photography in a way that distances it from its intended purpose. Whereas the infinity of possibilities inherent in photography would seem to reside in its potential for multiple reproduction, Constance Nouvel shows that this potential is already absolutely there within a single image. Henry-Claude Cousseau, When speaking of her method, Constance Nouvel employs a statement that sheds a perfect light on her enterprise: «I choose subjects that, by analogy, can combine different spaces: the photographed, photography and the photographic.» She follows through on this wide program with a constantly renewed rigorousness and inspiration. Her work does not explore specific subjects or iconographic repertoires nor does it evidence particularly favored themes or spaces that need to be systematically explored. What it does is provide an analysis of what the medium of photography, so widely used, can still be today. Thus she has decided to examine the philology of the photographic: its history, its artifices, and its technical and semantic practices. To do so, the artist creates installation and three-dimensional dispositifs in subtle spatial settings where photography often captures the subject. They allow her to insert the critical dimension, the strategic distance, and the subterfuges that are inherent to her work, and that are underscored by the constant presence of a frame.. Thus, she creates mise-en abyme as in the image where an operator, by tearing the image in the foreground, reveals the one hidden behind it, thus suggesting a mechanism that could be repeated indefinitely; or as in the one where an observer is gazing into the paradoxically frozen image of a video screen hanging on a wall; or again in this collage done with torn images that reveal the enigmatic geology of another image. All these images are infused with a particular grace and sensitiveness that is not averse to the realms of imagination and dream, particularly through the recurring usage of the landscape. But it is a trap: by pretending to show us the poetic and aloof universe of her images, Constance Nouvel actually forces us to a sudden awareness that gives us no choice but to succumb to the irresistible charm that these images hold over us, and within which we find ourselves confined. Cela s appelle l art. Transition V Photographie numérique et dessin / Digital photography and drawing 44 x 57 cm Christine Cayol Fondatrice de Yishu8
