Symposium Speakers and Presentation Summaries Speaker: Geoffrey van Moeseke Geoffrey van Moeseke est ingénieur civil architecte, titulaire d un diplôme d études approfondies et d un doctorat en sciences de l ingénieur obtenus à UCLouvain. Il a pendant 12 ans partagé sa pratique entre la recherche appliquée et l expertise énergétique comme consultant auprès de bureaux d architecture, d agences de promotion immobilière et d administrations. Il est aujourd hui chargé de cours invité et chargé de recherche à l UCLouvain, dans le domaine de la physique appliquée au bâtiment et des équipements HVAC. Il participe à la coordination de l équipe de recherche Architecture et Climat.» Présentation de l équipe de recherche Architecture et Climat (UCLouvain) et de ses projets liés à l énergie. L intervention fera une rapide présentation de l équipe de recherche puis présentera nos projets en cours liés au thème Energie, en particulier le projet MEASURE, ainsi que nos perspectives de développement. Speaker: Caroline Mouton Caroline Mouton is civil engineer in architecture. She did her architectural training between 2010 and 2012. Since 2012, she works at the Energy Institute of UMONS and has research activities in the field of energy performance of buildings. She takes care of the EPB certification of existing residential buildings. She also participated in the study COZEB which verifies that the minimum requirements in the field of energy performance approach the cost optimal levels.

Le projet PEB IBGE qui concerne la mise à jour de la procédure PEB pour les 3 Régions, dans ce cadre nous étudions l impact des protections solaires. L étude COZEB qui se concentre sur les bâtiments existants et vise à identifier les mesures optimales d amélioration de l enveloppe thermique, adaptées aux maisons, appartements, bureaux et écoles. Research about EPB requirements in Belgium Our presentation will be about 3 topics. The EPB requirements in Wallonia. The EPB-IBGE project concerning the update of the EPB procedure in the three Belgian Regions, in this context we present one of our studies: the impact of the sunscreens. The COZEB study that focuses on existing buildings and aims to identify the best measures for improving the thermal envelope for houses, apartments, offices and schools. Speaker: Olivier Dartevelle Olivier Dartevelle holds a MSc degree in Engineering and Architecture from Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL), Belgium. Currently, he is a PhD candidate at the research department Architecture et Climat -UCL. His research mainly focuses on building thermal simulations and energy use in buildings. He is also invited lecturer at ESA Saint-Luc Bruxelles. Prosolis: Thermal and visual characterisation of solar shadings.
Quantifying precisely the impact of solar shading requires considering properly the physical behaviour of the solar shading device and its dependence of angle of incidence. Based on simulations integrating BSDF properties measurements of common screens and venetian blinds, this presentation will discuss the impact of the choice of the solar shading device on thermal and visual comfort. It will also introduce the PROSOLIS web tool developed in the frame of this research. Speaker: Stéphane MONFILS Born 03/12/1984 in Liege. Graduated (civil engineer in architecture) with distinction from the University of Liege in 2007. Master thesis: The renovation of an existing dwelling from the sustainable development point of view. Researcher, under supervision of Jean-Marie HAUGLUSTAINE, from 2007 to 2011, first in Faculty of Applied Sciences, then in Faculty of Sciences, Department of Sciences and Environmental Management, Energy and Sustainable Development Research unit. Assistant of Prof. J.-M. Hauglustaine since 2011. Started in 2011 a PhD thesis: Study of the human factor in the assessment of the energy performance of existing urban houses and in the strategies of residential retrofitting in Wallonia Research field includes energy and environmental performance of buildings, certification, thermal bridges, renovation strategies, economic assessment, and sociology of energy. Represented the research unit as expert in sustainable development for several construction projects. One of the existing tools that could help creating smart energy policies is the Energy Performance Certification (EPC) of residential buildings, by introducing energy efficiency as a comparative criterion for real-estate purchase choices, influencing real-estate market value, stimulating energy saving investments, moving the housing market towards greater energy efficiency and creating comprehensive databases which are fundamental for shaping smart strategies on urban / regional / national levels. But EPCs in their actual form, calculated with a standardized approach which purposefully (and understandably) gets human factor out of the equations, do not allow appropriation of the results by potential buyers or tenants: often distant from reality, overestimating consumption, they usually result in a general misunderstanding and misuse of the document. This thesis therefore focuses on the integration of the human factor in the Walloon energy performance calculation methods, to develop complementary custom-made certification, advice, recommendations and help in renovation strategies decisions. Speaker: Jean-Marie Hauglustaine, Jean Marie Hauglustaine holds a civil engineer architect from ULg. He worked as a researcher in the building laboratory of ULg and the Center Scientifique et Technique de la Construction. Between 1984 to 1996, he was involved with over 200 projects of new building construction and renovation of houses, schools and offices. In 2001 he obtained a PhD degree from ULg. He has worked at the ULg as a professor and has worked as the director of research in the Architecture Laboratory. He has published practical guidelines for architects are available at http://energie.wallone.be. Since 2008 he leads the Energy and Suistainable Development Laboratory in the Arlon Campus of ULg. Lorsqu un entrepreneur se retrouve «à l étroit» dans ses installations et qu il souhaite construire de nouvelles installations, il se retrouve devant des décisions de projet difficiles à affronter. L outil, simple, mis au point au départ d un tableur Excel, lui permet de circonscrire les caractéristiques de son projet, et de l informer en continu des conséquences économiques et énergétiques de ses choix, à savoir la consommation énergétique, les émissions de CO2, ainsi que les coûts d investissement et de fonctionnement (énergie et maintenance). De plus, l outil propose une comparaison des ce coûts avec ceux du même projet qui serait assorti de choix environnementalement plus ambitieux. Speaker: Luis Candanedo Luis Candanedo is a Mechanical-Industrial Engineer. He holds MSc and PhD degrees in Building Engineering from Concordia University after doing research in the areas of moisture in building materials and Building Integrated Photovoltaic/Thermal systems. He held a one year postdoctoral position at the Dublin Institute of Technology in 2011. Since 2012, he has been working as a senior researcher at the Energy Institute of UMONS in the field of low energy buildings and mostly working in the NEED4B project. Occupancy detection in an office room using temperature, humidity, CO2 and light measurements with statistical learning models The adequate control of HVAC systems when using occupancy detection in building has been estimated to save energy in the order of 30-42% (Erickson et al, 2011; Dong and Andrews, 2009). In this presentation, occupancy detection is achieved from sensors data: temperature, light, CO 2 and humidity. The statistical learning models used for this classification problem include: CART (Classification And Regression Tress), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and Random Forest (RF).
