Reception In Reception French lessons will be made up of short sharp bursts of around 5 minutes. This means that one lesson might contain the following things a rendition of the rainbow song (revising colours), a game of beat the teacher (body parts), a 5 minute vocabulary repetition (new vocabulary e.g. animals), and a game of hot potato (basic questions). The focus of French in Reception is entirely on speaking and on games. The children learn to name the things around them in French. They are not exposed to the written word. So although a weekly termly plan might focus on the new topics covered each week, the previous topics will continue to be covered in each lesson too. Year One In Year One pupils have an increased attention span so although the emphasis is very similar at the start of the year, the amount of different things done in one lesson begins to lessen a little and the pupils spend more time on the activities that they undertake. As the year wears on they are more and more often asked to recognize the written form of the words they know in French. At the beginning of the third term the alphabet is formally taught and a lot of time is spent on the way French letters (and therefore French words too) are pronounced differently from the English. Year Two In Year Two the pupils continue to build on their knowledge of French vocabulary and basic grammar by recognizing words and reading in the first term and focusing increasingly on copying words and beginning to understand written sentences later on in the year. A few small scale writing projects will also take place with writing scheme. All the while they will continue to practice the alphabet (by playing games like hangman) and thus laying the foundations for the bigger emphasis on spelling in the Upper School.
