SG DataCenters Strategy 2012 DATACENTERS TRANSFORMATION & STRATEGY PRINCIPLES A limited number of large, specialized and high quality datacenters Limited number: progressively and with an opportunistic approach, concentrate the whole SG IT hosting on 5 Datacentres Large: to mutualize costs and with ability to grow footprint / capacity Specialized: not shared / located in a users building High quality: Tier 3 A Renting vs. Building policy External hosting as a service when it makes sense
SG DataCenters Strategy IS DATACENTERS MAPPING STRATEGY ORIENTATIONS Grouped: an IS shall not be spread on too different sites / DC Dedicated: for simplicity and exploitability, a site or at minimum a DC should have a PRODUCTION or a BACKUP/DR + ACTIVE-ACTIVE vocation Preserve future (i.e. growth capacity): a business line must be confident that its DC hosting site will cope with its growth Be pragmatic on executing the day-to-day convergence KISS: Keep It Short and Simple
kw Power Use (%) SG DataCenters Strategy Based on these principles and potenial triggers, theoritical consolidation roadmap built to: Significantly reduce our number of DataCenters until 2018 on France and International perimeter Optimize our capacity and reduce extra-capacity by coupling the release of non Strategic DataCenters with a strong Capacity planning governance Reduce our DataCenters overall budget Sites & DataCenters Consolidation DataCenters Power Consumption 25 20 15 10 5 0 21 20 16 15 17 14 12 11 9 9 9 8 8 7 7 6 3 3 3 3 2 1 1 1 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 Datacenters Declassified Sites 14000 12000 10000 8000 6000 4000 2000 0 59% 64% 64% 65% 52% 52% 49% 53% 6989 6668 5880 6051 5899 5857 5857 5784 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 Year 70% 60% 50% 40% 30% 20% 10% 0%
SG DataCenters Strategy However constraints related to such consolidation program due to: DC Contracts Long term contracts signed with expiry dates that cannot be easily brought closer in time Consolidation IT & Resiliency History Complex and expensive move programs with long term ROI difficult to sell to the Business Strong link with Resiliency constraints and IT infrastructures specificities (Synchronous replication limitations, network protocols (broadcast), ) Last DataCenters managed (both technicaly and financially) by entities outside of GTS require a more complex transformation to be integrated in target model
SG DataCenters Strategy Focus on Data4 support: Starting from a complex and large contract signed in 2008 for 8 rooms 2 DC, we had to opportunity to: Sub-rent rooms to third parties Contractualy release non used rooms in exchange of rooms in a new building (different tiering and density) Modify expiry dates of certain rooms to shorten it and then release a complete DC (Marcoussis DB) according to our Strategy DATA4 DATA4 As-is situation 2A3 2B1 2A1 A3D 1st Floor Ground Floor 1st Floor 2A4 2A2 A4D Sub rented DB DATA4 Target situation DATA4 2B1 2A1 1st Floor Ground Floor 2A4 2A2 Sub rented D3 D3 part 1 D3 part 2
