Contexte scientifique: Contexte et justification du projet Outline and justification for the project - Continuité des actions de mesures, recherche et formation initiées dans le cadre du programme EGEE (Etude de la circulation océanique et du climat dans le Golfe de Guinée), volet océanographique d AMMA (Analyses Multidisciplinaires de la Mousson Africaine), dans les pays côtiers du nord du Golfe de Guinée (Nigeria, Bénin, Togo, Ghana et Côte d Ivoire). Scientific outline : Continuity actions of measures, research and training initiated under the programme EGEE (study ocean circulation and climate in the Gulf of Guinea), part of Oceanographic AMMA (Multidisciplinaires Analyses of the African Monsoon), in coastal countries northern Gulf of Guinea (Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana and Cote d'ivoire). Justification du projet: - Développement d un réseau de mesures régionales et d une banque de données en océanographie; - Finaliser une collaboration étroite et un partenariat entre les différents laboratoires d océanographie de la sous-région Project justification : Developing a network of regional measures and a data bank in oceanography; Finalize close collaboration and partnership between various laboratories oceanography of the subregion
Objectif(s) du Projet Project objectives Développer et maintenir sur le long terme un réseau de mesures côtières autonomes le long de la côte Nord du Golfe de Guinée (principalement température de surface de la mer, mesures météorologiques); Develop and maintain over the long term a network of coastal autonomous measurements along the north coast of the Gulf of Guinea (mainly sea surface temperature, meteorological measurements); Etablir et maintenir une banque de données océanographiques régionales (température de la mer, salinité, courants, météo vent-); Establish and maintain a database regional ocean (sea temperature, salinity, currents, weather and wind-); Mener à bien en commun des travaux de recherche prioritaires pour la sous-région, liés à la variabilité des conditions océanographiques et climatiques le long de la côte Nord du Golfe de Guinée (upwelling, courants, ressources, érosion); Carry out joint research priority for the sub-region, linked to the variability of climate and ocean conditions along the north coast of the Gulf of Guinea (upwelling, currents, resources, erosion); Favoriser la formation en océanographie dans les universités régionales, et en travaux de recherche dans les laboratoires partenaires. Encourage training in Oceanography regional universities, and research in laboratories partners.
Activités du Projet Project Activities - Mise en place d un réseau de mesures autonomes de la température de la mer, de qualité et haute résolution temporelle (1h). Ce réseau consiste en l installation d un capteur à Lagos (Nigeria), Cotonou (Bénin), Kpémé (Togo), Takoradi (Ghana) et Sassandra (Côte d Ivoire) est en cours de finalisation. 4 capteurs ont déjà été installés (de juillet 2005 au Bénin à mars 2008 au Nigeria; seule reste l installation au Ghana à finaliser). - Setting up a network of autonomous measures the temperature of the sea, quality and high temporal resolution (1h). The network consists of installing a sensor in Lagos (Nigeria), Cotonou (Benin), Kpémé (Togo), Takoradi (Ghana) and Sassandra (Côte d'ivoire) is being finalized. 4 sensors have been installed (from July 2005 to March 2008 in Benin, Togo, Côte d Ivoire and Nigeria; the last one in Ghana is being installed today). - Collecte de données historiques de température, salinité, vent, courant et produits satellite dans le Golfe de Guinée, et élaboration d une banque de données régionales. - Data collection of historical temperature, salinity, wind, current and satellite products in the Gulf of Guinea, and development of a regional data bank. - Validation des données historiques de température à partir des données du réseau, valorisation et interprétation de ces données. - Validation of historical temperature data from the data network, upgrading and interpretation of these data. Création d un Master Régional en Océanographique Physique à l Université d Abomey-Calavi (Cotonou/Bénin), en collaboration avec l Université Paul Sabatier (Toulouse/France), et les universités régionales. Creation of a Regional Master in Physics Oceanography at the University of Abomey-Calavi (Cotonou / Benin), in collaboration with the University Paul Sabatier (Toulouse / France), and regional universities.
Résultats attendus Results Expected Les résultats attendus de ce programme portent principalement sur trois thématiques scientifiques : The results expected from this program are focused on three scientific thematics : -Analyse et suivi de Conditions Océaniques dans le Golfe de Guinée, et principalement le long des côtes de sa partie nord (du Nigeria à la Côte d Ivoire) ; - Analysis and Tracking Ocean Conditions in the Gulf of Guinea, mainly along the coast of its northern part (from Nigeria to Côte d'ivoire); -Influence des conditions océaniques de surface sur la variabilité de flux de mousson ; - Influence of surface ocean conditions on the variability of monsoon flows; Impact of climate and ocean conditions on resources and coastal erosion. -Impact des conditions océaniques et climatiques sur les Ressources et l'érosion côtière. Pour ce faire, priorité est donnée à: To do this, priority is given to: -Etablir une banque régionale de données océanographiques côtières. - Establish a regional bank coastal oceanographic data. -Renforcer la formation et les capacités locales (en lien avec les universités). - Strengthen training and local capacity (in conjunction with universities).
Résultats obtenus Results 4 years of SST measurements at Cotonou: SST variability; interannual & intraseasonal: 2 upwelling seasons In spring: - 2008 warm year In summer: - 2005: cold year - 2007: warm year - 2008: late cooling Evidence of short duration events with large SST amplitude
Résultats obtenus Results - Study of the processes responsible for the coastal upwelling in the northern of the Gulf of Guinea, (PhD thesis in Abidjdan; 2 nde year) - Analysis of the influence of the tropical Atlantic SST on regional climate, as seen from numerical studies with the Modèle Atmosphérique Régional -MAR- (2 different simulations are running with different SST products & other forcing conditions, work done at LAPA/Univ.of Cocody, Abidjan) -Organization of one regional Colloquium at Cotonou in November 2009 about «Research and formation in Oceanography in West African Universities», => GOAL: -communication & collaboration between regional capacity building programs -regional collaborations between observation programs -get easier their visibility (+ share students/courses) => recommandations about capacity building, observation systems, & collaborations => decision taken for yearly «workshops» for data acquisition and treatment & courses + Capacity building => launching of a new Master 2 dedicated to «physical oceanography and applications» in Cotonou/BENIN! (see on Tuesday )
Résultats obtenus Results MAIN SUCCESSES: - Regional coastal network (SST ONSET sensors) - Regional Data Bank (still tob e finalized, but on the web) - Capacity building (Master 2) - Initiations of research actions (MAR in LAPA-MF, coastal erosion in Benin from fall 2010, Master 2 training periods results ) - Initiation of regional collaborations, along with regional universities (only pb with Togo ).
