6 EN The catalogue of the Prize for the Most Beautiful Books in Brussels and Wallonia, with written contributions by international photographers Els Van Riel, David Helbich, Elly Clarke, David Bergé, Bart Julius Peters, Anette Lundebye, Julie Peeters, Silvano Magnone, Johannes Schwartz, Marc De Blieck et Uta Eisenreich. The Fernand Baudin Prize ( who wants to honour and encourage the contemporary book production in Brussels and Wallonie, presents for its sixth edition the Most Beautiful Books Through a competition, a special recognition is given to books which demonstrate an outstanding quality both in their conception (editorial and graphic) and in their production (printing and binding). An international and professional jury judges the participating books. Mette Edvardsen (artist performer) was selected as this year's Jurypresident. During the jury, on 10th and 11th March 2014, she was assisted by the following book professionals: Michel Defourny, Sonia Dermience, Catherine Guiral, Sveinn Jóhannsson, Benjamin Monti, Kristien Van den Brande and Rick Poynor. Eleven books, having obtained a majority of the votes in the final round, were elected award-winners and bear the title of Prize-winner of the 2013 Fernand Baudin Prize. For this catalogue of the Fernand Baudin Prize 2013 we invited 11 photographers to document one of the awarded books. In a joint statement, graphic designer Joris Kritis and president of the jury Mette Edvardsen have asked them in their role as photographers to fulfill an assignment, but not in a way they would usually operate. What we would like to propose to you is the following: to document an awarded book, not by means of photography, but by describing it. Literally, you will receive a copy of the book, hold it in your hands, and describe it with your own words, and in this way capture it. Your oral description would be recorded and then later transcribed. It is not about giving your opinion about the book, or judging it, but to describe what it looks like, feels like, how it is to handle, what it evokes, the physicality of the object as well as the visual,... Our idea is to create another book-object which grasps something more about the awarded books, to find another way to represent them than taking a picture of them. We find it important that the descriptions are done orally, recorded, and then transcribed. In this way the texts will be different from editorial texts. We are interested in the contrast to how the books are usually approached, in a more visual manner. These texts became the images of this publication. There was no indication or limitation of length. Pour sa sixième édition, le Prix Fernand Baudin, qui honore et soutient la création contemporaine du livre à Bruxelles et en Wallonie ( présente les livres élus «plus beaux livres 2013». Le Prix Fernand Baudin attribue à l'issue d'un concours une mention aux livres qui témoignent d'une grande qualité tant au point de vue de leur conception (éditoriale et graphique), que de leur réalisation (impression et façonnage). Les livres participants sont soumis à une sélection faite par un jury composé de professionnels du secteur. Cette année, l artiste Mette Edvardsen a été désignée comme présidente du jury. Elle était assistée par les membres du jury suivants : Michel Defourny, Sonia Dermience, Catherine Guiral, Sveinn Jóhannsson, Benjamin Monti, Kristien Van den Brande et Rick Poynor. Le livre présente les lauréats, à travers des contributions textuelles des photographes internationaux Els Van Riel, David Helbich, Elly Clarke, David Bergé, Bart Julius Peters, Anette Lundebye, Julie Peeters, Silvano Magnone, Johannes Schwartz, Marc De Blieck et Uta Eisenreich. «Pour ce catalogue du Prix Fernand Baudin 2013, nous avons invité 11 photographes à décrire chacun un des livres lauréats. En collaboration avec le graphiste Joris Kritis, la présidente du jury Mette Edvardsen leur a demandé de répondre à une commande en tant que photographes mais d une manière originale, différente de ce qu ils font habituellement. «Voici ce que nous souhaiterions vous proposer : illustrer un livre lauréat, non pas par le biais de la photographie mais en le décrivant. Concrètement, vous recevrez un exemplaire du livre, le tiendrez dans vos mains, puis le décrirez à voix haute, avec vos mots pour ainsi le capturer. Votre description sera enregistrée et ultérieurement retranscrite. Il ne s agit pas de donner votre opinion sur le livre ou d en faire une critique, mais de décrire son apparence, votre ressenti, la sensation au toucher, ce qu il vous évoque, son aspect physique comme esthétique, etc. L idée est de créer un nouvel objet-livre permettant de saisir d autres aspects des livres lauréats, de trouver une manière de les représenter autre que via l image. Il nous semble important que les descriptions soient faites oralement, enregistrées, puis retranscrites. Les textes se différencieront ainsi de textes rédigés. Nous sommes intéressés par la façon dont les livres pourraient être approchés différemment qu en général dans ce genre de publications, c est-àdire plutôt par l image. Les paroles qui nous ont été transmises sont devenues les images de cette publication. Aucune limite de temps n a étéimposée. ( De catalogus van de Fernand Baudin Prijs 2013 is ontworpen door Joris Kritis in samenwerking met de Voorzitster van de jury Mette Edvardsen, die hebben voor deze catalogus nieuwe beelden geleverd: namelijk teksten die de winnende boeken beschrijven bij de internationale fotografen Els Van Riel, David Helbich, Elly Clarke, David Bergé, Bart Julius Peters, Anette Lundebye, Julie Peeters, Silvano Magnone, Johannes Schwartz, Marc De Blieck en Uta Eisenreich. Voor deze catalogus van de Fernand Baudin Prijs 2013, hebben we 11 fotografen uitgenodigd om elk één van de bekroonde boeken te documenteren. In samenwerking met de grafisch vormgever Joris Kritis, heeft de Voorzitster van de jury Mette Edvardsen, hen gevraagd om een opdracht te vervullen, in hun hoedanigheid van fotograaf, zij het niet op de voor hen gebruikelijke wijze. Wat we jullie zouden willen voorstellen, is het volgen- de: een bekroond boek documenteren, evenwel niet door middel van de fotografie, maar door het te beschrijven. Concreet: jullie ontvangen elk een exemplaar van een boek, je houdt het vast en vervolgens beschrijf je het hardop in je eigen woorden om het zo te vatten. Deze mondelinge beschrijving zal worden opgenomen en uiteindelijk getranscribeerd. Hierbij gaat het niet om het geven van je mening over het boek, om een beoordeling, maar om een beschrijving van zijn verschijning, jullie gewaarwordingen, hoe het aanvoelt, wat het oproept, het fysieke aspect net als het esthetische, enz. We zouden zo nog een boekobject in het leven wil- len roepen, dat iets meer andere aspecten van de bekroonde boeken vat, dat een andere wijze van vertaling vindt dan de fotografische representatie. We vinden het belangrijk dat de beschrijvingen mondeling gebeuren, opgenomen en vervolgens getranscribeerd worden. Op dergelijke wijze zullen de teksten danig verschillen van geredigeerde teksten. Het contrast met hoe de boeken normaal gezien op een meer visuele manier benaderd worden in dergelijke publicaties, interesseert ons. De woorden die werden overgedragen werden zo de beelden van deze publicatie. Er waren geen beperkingen inzake omvang.
