3 The Technical Committee on Computational Aspects of Analysis and Design of Dams of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) has organised every two years benchmark workshops with the purpose of validating reference methods to typical problems raised by design or verification of hydraulic structures. Since 1991, not less than 27 different problems have been proposed to the community of researchers and engineers, which have resulted in comparison between different international practices, and have brought discussion allowing validation of many methods. The next Benchmark Workshop will be held in September 2009 in Paris. It will provide the opportunity to compare both methods and software packages in application to the resolution of the presently most crucial problems facing the community of dam designers: the behaviour of large arch dams; the resistance of concrete faces of rockfill dams (CFRD), and the stability assessment of dam abutments. The 3 proposed subjects will be available to participants from April 2009, to allow them to develop their solution until August, at which time contributions will be analysed and compared by the Scientific Committee. The workshop will be held from 16 to 18 September During technical sessions, all contributions will be presented and discussed by their authors, who will detail their methods, software as well as their results. The synthesis of results will then be exposed by a Scientific panel. Subjects, contributions and syntheses will be published and distributed to all participants. 4 Proposed technical themes and subjects Theme A : "Initial strain and stress development in a thin arch dam considering realistic construction sequence" Subject proposed by M. Meghella et A. Frigerio, CESI RICERCA, Italy The evaluation of initial stress-strain pattern following the development of short and long-term thermal and rheological effects in concrete dams, while realistically considering the actual construction sequence, represents a difficult challenge for dam analysts and engineers. Nowadays, thanks to the increase of computers power and the enhancement in numerical tools, the modelling of more complex and realistic cases can be faced. Such effects can be particularly critical for thin arch dams, where cracks can significantly affect dam safety. Therefore, the theme is aimed at evaluating the initial stress-strain pattern in a thin arch dam. Participants will be provided with the construction sequence along with physical-mechanical properties of the concrete and geometrical data of the dam. Results will be evaluated in the light of the actual crack pattern, as developed within the dam body. Theme B : "Analysis of a concrete faced rockfill dam including concrete face loading and deformation " Subject proposed par C. Marulanda, INGETEC, Colombia, and P. Anthiniac, COYNE et BELLIER, France The construction of Concrete Faced Rockfill Dams has increased in the last decades. This enthusiasm for CFRDs has its origin in both its inherent stability characteristics and its construction and schedule features. Also its foundation requirements and treatments that are less strict and more straightforward to carry out, particularly when compared to gravity or arch dams have made this type of dam a very attractive solution. As a consequence, the CFRD is currently a very common type of dam with several projects recently finished or under construction with heights above 180 m. The design and development of CFRD dams, have been based primarily on precedent and empiricism, however, recent incidents have shown that the extrapolation of precedents with the current procedures can have serious consequences. Recent events have shown the need to improve the current design approaches and evolve beyond empiricism which should include the development of analytical methodologies to analyze the behavior of this type of dams. Finite Element Analyses are now a common tool to predict dam behaviour, including the behaviour of the concrete face. However the physical mechanisms involved in the interaction of the different structural components of a CFRD dam is a very complex problem to model. This theme aims at identifying the key physical mechanisms that should be included in a numerical analysis to adequately predict the behaviour of a CFRD. This will be performed by trying to reproduce in a three dimensional model the cracking pattern observed on the upstream face of a high CFRD. Theme C : " Stability of a dam abutment including seismic loading" Subject proposed par R.M. Gunn, STUCKY, Switzerland The problem statement shall consist of the static and seismic stability assessment of a threedimensional multi-facetted rock "wedge" of an arch dam abutment. Firstly, dam-rock interface forces shall be evaluated from a finite element model and then, abutment stability assessments shall be performed using empirical (Londe Method) and/or finite element techniques Useful Information How to participate Prospective Participants to one or several Workshop themes are invited to complete the attached Application for Prospective Participants Form and fax or mail it to the Organisation Committee. The deadline for submittal of Application is February 28, They will automatically receive further information for collecting the subjects, preparing contribution, as well as the Final Program and Registration Form. Venue of the 10 th Benchmark Workshop The workshop will be held in Coyne et Bellier head offices in Gennevilliers close to Paris, not more than 15 minutes from the Champs Elysées by public transport and 20 minutes from the Charles-de- Gaulle airport by taxi. Conferences, lunches and coffee breaks will be on place. Welcome and farewell dinners will be in the Paris area. The 3 rd day will be devoted to a technical tour, with the visit of hydraulic works (still to be defined). The official language of the workshop will be English.

The number of participants will be limited to 60 persons. Priority will be given to authors of contributions according to the inscription date. Those who will have expressed their intention to provide a contribution to one or several themes will be given a pre-reservation priority. 7 Le Comité technique des méthodes de calcul pour barrages de la C.I.G.B. organise périodiquement des ateliers de calcul dans le but de valider des méthodes de référence pour les problèmes typiques posés par la conception ou la vérification des ouvrages hydrauliques. Depuis 1991, pas moins de 27 problèmes différents ont été proposés à la communauté des chercheurs et ingénieurs, qui ont fait l'objet d'une confrontation entre les différentes pratiques internationales et ont permis de valider de nombreuses méthodes. Le prochain atelier de calcul se tiendra en septembre 2009 à Paris. Il offrira une opportunité unique de comparer à la fois les méthodes et les logiciels en application à la résolution des problèmes les plus cruciaux qui se posent à l'heure actuelle : le comportement des grands barrages voûtes, la tenue des masques amont en béton des remblais d'enrochement, et la stabilité des appuis de barrages. Les 3 sujets proposés seront mis à la disposition des participants dès avril 2009, pour leur permettre de développer les solutions jusqu'en août, date à laquelle les contributions seront reçues et analysées par le comité scientifique. L'atelier proprement dit se tiendra du 16 au 18 septembre Au cours des séances techniques, les contributions dans chacun des 3 thèmes seront étudiées : chaque participant présentera ses méthodes, ses logiciels et les résultats qu'il aura obtenus. La synthèse des résultats sera ensuite exposée par un panel scientifique. L'ensemble des contributions sera publié et distribué à tous les participants. 8 Les thèmes de calcul proposes Thème A : "Initial strain and stress development in a thin arch dam considering realistic construction sequence" Problème proposé par M. Meghella et A. Frigerio, CESI RICERCA, Italie Pour les barrages en béton, c'est un vrai challenge posé aux ingénieurs et analystes que d'évaluer de façon réaliste les champs initiaux de contraintes et déformations qui résultent des effets thermiques et rhéologiques, et ceci impose de prendre en considération toutes les phases de construction. C'est néanmoins devenu possible aujourd'hui, grâce aux progrès des moyens de calcul. De tels effets sont particulièrement sensibles pour les barrages voûtes minces, dans lesquels la fissuration peut altérer leur sécurité. Le présent problème a donc pour objet d'évaluer le champ de contraintes initial d'un barrage voûte mince italien. Les participants recevront une description complète de la géométrie du barrage, de ses propriétés physiques et mécaniques, l'histoire et les conditions de construction. Les résultats seront comparés au champ de fissures tel qu'il est apparu sur l'ouvrage réel. Thème B : "Analysis of a concrete faced rockfill dam including concrete face loading and deformation " Problème proposé par C. Marulanda, INGETEC, Colombia, et P. Anthiniac, COYNE et BELLIER, France La construction des barrages en enrochements à masque en béton (CFRD) s'est développée ces dernières décades. L'enthousiasme pour ce type de barrage s'explique par sa stabilité intrinsèque, ses méthodes de construction et leur rapidité, et leur moindre exigence en matière de fondation, surtout en comparaison avec les barrages en béton. En conséquence, ce type de barrage CFRD est aujourd'hui très commun et plusieurs projets en construction ou récemment terminés dépassent la hauteur de 180 mètres. La conception et la construction se sont longtemps fondées uniquement sur l'expérience et la répétition, mais plusieurs incidents apparus ces derniers temps sont venus rappeler les limites et dangers de l'extrapolation. Ces faits soulignent le besoin d'améliorer les pratiques actuelles de conception, en appuyant l'empirisme sur le développement de méthodes d'analyse numérique pour analyser le comportement de ce type de barrage. Les éléments finis permettent de conduire ces analyses, en incorporant le masque en béton. Il est néanmoins très difficile de représenter de façon réaliste les mécanismes physiques qui entrent en jeu dans l'interaction entre les différentes composantes d'un CFRD. Le problème proposé a pour objet d'identifier les phénomènes physiques clés qu'il est indispensable de représenter pour prédire correctement le comportement d'un CFRD. Les participants devront préparer et utiliser un modèle tridimensionnel pour reproduire le champ de fissuration qui est apparu sur le masque en béton d'un grand barrage de ce type. Thème C : " Stability of a dam abutment including seismic loading" Problème proposé par R.M. Gunn, STUCKY, Suisse Le problème proposé consiste à évaluer la stabilité, tant du point de vue statique que sismique, d'un "bloc" tridimensionnel défini par plusieurs faces, qui fait partie de la fondation d'un barrage voûte. Les forces s'exerçant à l'interface barrage-fondation seront d'abord évaluées avec un modèle aux éléments finis. L'évaluation de la stabilité sera ensuite réalisée en utilisant au choix soit la méthode des équilibres (méthode de LONDE), soit la technique des éléments finis. Informations pratiques Comment participer Les personnes intéressées à prendre part à un ou plusieurs des thèmes de l'atelier sont invitées à compléter le bulletin d'intention joint et à le renvoyer, par fax ou par , au Comité d'organisation, le plus tôt possible. Ils recevront alors automatiquement les informations complémentaires pour la collecte des sujets, la préparation des contributions, et l'inscription finale. Tenue de l'atelier de banc d'essai L'atelier se tiendra dans les locaux de Coyne et Bellier, à Gennevilliers près de Paris, à 15 minutes de métro des Champs Elysées et à 20 minutes de taxi de l'aéroport Charles-de-Gaulle. Les conférences, les repas de midi et les pauses café seront pris sur place. Les repas du soir seront pris en commun dans la région parisienne. La troisième journée sera consacrée à une visite technique, dont l'objet reste à définir. La langue officielle de l'atelier est l'anglais.
