3 The Cluster Photonics Belgium, created in 2008, gathers all innovative Belgian companies and Research Centres in the expanding field of Photonics. Photonics deals with light, in the visible and invisible spectrum. This includes production and transmission of light, as well as imaging and image processing. The Photonics is transverse : There are numerous specialities within Photonics which applications are typically transverse. The cluster promotes business and development co-operation between its members and makes their skills recognized. The cluster s initiatives are coordinated with other Belgian clusters as well as with other European photonics clusters, so as to create the best opportunity for synergy, to encourage creativity and explore new development paths. Bronze Label : The Cluster Photonics Belgium is awarded with the European Management Excellence label in BRONZE. The benchmarking was realised according to a concept developed and performed by the European Secretariat for Cluster Analysis in the context of the European Cluster Excellence Initiative, project founded by the European Commission s Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry.

Le centre possède une série de lasers (de type CO2, Vanadate, YAG, Excimer) permettant le rechargement, le micro-usinage, le marquage sur divers substrats, la découpe fine. En particulier, l équipe s est spécialisée dans le traitement des matériaux céramiques et a développé une technique originale (brevetée) d usinage en cru permettant la réalisation de formes complexes (turbines, couronnes dentaires). Les matériaux visés sont outre les composites céramique-métal, les céramiques structurales (alumine, zircone, nitrures, carbures), les céramiques fonctionnelles (PZT). BCRC activities concern mainly research and development and support to industry through consultancy, processing of prototypes and tests. A series of different laser types are located at BCRC premises (CO2, Vanadate, YAG, Excimer) allowing to perform cladding, micro-machining, marking and precise cutting of various type materials. The team has more precisely a strong expertise of ceramic materials and has developed a proprietary green machining method (patented) to produce complicated shape objects like small turbines or teeth crowns. Il a pu démontrer que la qualité et l intensité du spectre avait une influence sur la physionomie de la plante mais également sur sa composition chimique (métabolites secondaires, huiles essentielles, oligo-éléments, ). Le CARAH propose : Conseils, audits en matière d éclairage des végétaux dans les secteurs de la production, de la recherche ou du design. Le service assure également des expérimentations pour d autres centres de recherches ou entreprises dans le domaine de la production végétale. The CARAH is being active for long in agriculture and agri-food sector and is well known for its expertise in plant experiments. The Lighting Department for Living Organisms is a part of the CARAH and is studying the quantitative and qualitative effects of the quantity and composition of light on plant development. It has been able to demonstrate that the intensity and the quality of the light spectrum have an influence on the plant physionomy but also on its chemical composition. The CARAH can offer : Advices and audits for plant lighting in the production, research and design sectors. The Department can also provide experimental research for other research centers or businesses in the area of plant production.

We are mainly interested by the high potentialities offered by nanometer objects such as metallic nanoparticles (NPs) and quantum dots (QDs). Indeed, such particles are expected to improve light detection or light efficiency due to particular optical properties: surface plasmon resonance phenomenon for NPs and localized energy levels for QDs.
