The Chair of BOMA Canada, Michael Miceli, offers his congratulations to all national winners, each of whom has already been an award winner at the local level. BOMA Canada s National Awards program recognizes the very best of the dynamic Canadian commercial real estate industry, Mr. Miceli said. These awards acknowledge the special efforts made by those in the industry whose leadership and hard work set new benchmarks and define the shape of things to come. The Office Building of the Year (TOBY) Awards salute the stars of the commercial real estate industry, recognizing excellence in property management, operations, resource conservation, environmental awareness, leasing and building design, customer service and innovation. The Earth Award is BOMA Canada s recognition of excellence in resource preservation and environmentally sound commercial building management. The BOMA Canada Earth Award is presented to a building that has made significant efforts to address environmental issues faced by both older and newer buildings. BOMA Canada s Pinnacle Awards recognize companies that represent a standard of excellence to which all BOMA members and their employees should aspire. The Pinnacle Awards recognize innovation, teamwork, outstanding service and commitment to clients. Winners of BOMA Canada s 2010 National Awards may be eligible to compete in the International Awards, which will be presented at BOMA International s Annual Convention being held in June, 2011 in Washington, DC. 4 Chairman s Award Le prix du président du conseil Michael Miceli, Chairman of the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) of Canada, is pleased to announce the 2010 recipient of the BOMA Canada Chairman s Award. Peter Sharpe is being honoured in recognition of his service to the national association, as well as his generous and timely contributions of energy and expertise towards key issues affecting not just BOMA members but all industry stakeholders. His longstanding dedication to BOMA and ongoing efforts to affect positive change in our dynamic business make him a most deserving recipient of this award. Peter Sharpe has been an extremely committed leader at all levels of the BOMA organization, says Michael Miceli, Chairman of BOMA Canada. He continually makes important contributions as a strategic thinker and as a respected expert who works tirelessly to foster improvements in our industry. Peter serves as a dynamic industry spokesperson for BOMA, both locally in Toronto and at the national and international levels. BOMA Canada is an organization made stronger through the collective efforts of its members. Whether at the local, national or international level, volunteers lend valued expertise and insight, crucial to helping the organization accomplish its goals. Accordingly, the Chairman s Award recognizes an outstanding contribution by an individual to BOMA Canada. Thanks to his exceptional leadership, and continued dedication, BOMA Canada is delighted to acknowledge Mr. Sharpe s contributions in serving our association and our members. Peter Sharpe is President and Chief Executive Officer of The Cadillac Fairview Corporation Limited, a company wholly owned by the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan Board and is responsible for Cadillac Fairview s growth strategy in support of the Teachers long-term investment focus. Mr. Sharpe has held various positions of ever increasing responsibility within Cadillac Fairview since In addition to his involvement with BOMA Canada, Mr. Sharpe is also a trustee on the International Council of Shopping Centers board and is a director on the board of both The Sunnybrook Foundation and Postmedia Network Inc. Peter Sharpe has lent his insight and expertise to a variety of initiatives, each of which has had a lasting, positive impact on BOMA Canada and its members, notes Mr. Miceli. He both challenges and supports BOMA to become better at what it does, helping shape the association into a stronger and more effective national body. His ability to engage other industry leaders in developing new policies and practices that benefit everyone, from tenants through to building owners, has been a hallmark of Mr. Sharpe s many contributions to our organization. I am very pleased to recognize Peter Sharpe as the recipient of the 2010 Chairman s Award. The BOMA Canada Chairman s Award was formally presented to Mr. Sharpe at the BOMA Canada National Awards Gala in Toronto, on September 15, 2010, in conjunction with BOMEX 2010, BOMA Canada s national conference and exposition. Depuis 1984, M. Sharpe a assumé de plus en plus de responsabilités au fil de ses différents postes au sein de Cadillac Fairview. Outre son engagement envers BOMA Canada, M. 7 BOMA BESt: for Multi Residential Buildings BOMA BESt: pour immeubles multi-résidentiels BOMA members across Canada have asked BOMA to deliver a BOMA BESt Assessment for Multi-Residential Buildings. We ve been working on it, and BOMA members with multiresidential properties will soon have a product they can use. There are well over one million Canadian households in high rise multi residential buildings, and another two million in low rise buildings. With several thousand more suites being built each year, this adds up to a lot of buildings that have nowhere to turn when looking for a standard program to address environmental management and assessment. BOMA BESt for Multi Residential Buildings (Multi-Res) will be able to serve many of those buildings and offer a consistent way to evaluate these properties. BOMA BESt Multi-Res will offer the first consistent national method to benchmark energy and to rate the environmental management and performance of multi residential properties. This assessment has been under development for some time, and it started with a group of property owners and managers in Western Canada. Representatives from GWL Realty Advisors, Bentall LP, Realstar and Gateway have worked together to identify how multi residential buildings should be assessed using the BOMA BESt approach. Halsall Associates also provided comment on the assessment. The next steps for BOMA Canada include working with the initial group and broadening it to include other owners and managers, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, and Ryerson University. This robust committee will review the assessment and in particular, identify the best way to benchmark energy use for multi residential buildings. There is no existing Canadian standard methodology for benchmarking energy use in multi residential, nor is there a suitable database in existence with the detailed information required to define the best scale. With the input of experts at CMHC, Ryerson University, and experts in the field, BOMA will be setting a new standard in benchmarking for the multi residential sector. With that in mind, we are taking a measured approach to ensure that the methodology is a sound one. BOMA BESt Multi-Res will be available in the coming months. BOMA s BESt Practices will be consistent in this sector, so BOMA members can start preparing their applications now. Going beyond the places where people work and shop, BOMA BESt will available where people live as well. BOMA BESt multi-résidentiel proposera la première méthode harmonisée à l échelle nationale permettant de mesurer comparativement la consommation énergétique et d attribuer une note à la gestion et la performance environnementales des immeubles multi-résidentiels. Le développement de cette évaluation a demandé un certain temps et a débuté avec un groupe de propriétaires et administrateurs d immeubles de l Ouest canadien. Des représentants de GWL Realty Advisors, Bentall LP, Realstar et Gateway ont combiné leurs efforts afin d identifier la meilleure manière d évaluer les immeubles multi-résidentiels en utilisant l approche BOMA BESt. La société Halsall Associates a également fourni une aide précieuse. La prochaine étape pour BOMA Canada consiste notamment à travailler avec le groupe initial et à l élargir afin d inclure d autres propriétaires et administrateurs, la Société canadienne d hypothèques et de logement et la Ryerson University. En gardant ce but à l esprit, nous adoptons une approche calculée afin de nous assurer que notre méthodologie est solide. BOMA BESt multi-résidentiel sera disponible dans les mois à venir. Les meilleures pratiques BOMA BESt continueront d être appliquées dans ce nouveau secteur. Les membres de BOMA peuvent donc commencer à préparer leurs candidatures.
