3 ÉDITORIAL / EDITORIAL Un cadre et de la méthode, pour innover vraiment C est un fait acquis : l innovation peut aujourd hui améliorer les performances et doper la croissance des grands groupes. Une condition s avère toutefois nécessaire : parvenir à créer des innovations de rupture pertinentes qui seront mises en production effective. Pour ce faire, la créativité ne suffit pas. Il ne s agit pas d innover n importe où, ni n importe comment. SNCF a défini le «où» par l adoption d une stratégie claire, qui porte cinq champs prioritaires d innovation. Mais l entreprise s attache également à diffuser le «comment». Les cinq chantiers sont ainsi animés par la Direction Innovation & Recherche selon une méthode spécifique, en trois phases. Elle accompagne les (bonnes) idées de bout en bout, jusqu à l étape ultime de l exploitation commerciale. La première phase est celle de la «défixation». Elle se nourrit d une analyse et d un partage de connaissances en provenance de tous les secteurs d activité, pour mieux sortir du cadre des produits et des usages connus dans le ferroviaire. Elle aboutit à la formulation de concepts innovants, formalisés et structurés. Ils sont déclinés en nouveaux objets et nouveaux usages à la phase du «design» qui constitue la deuxième phase. C est aussi une étape d expérimentation, avec les besoins des clients pour guide. La troisième phase, «d industrialisation», permet d adapter la Proof of concept, le prototype ou le pilote au contexte métier, avec les opérateurs. À son terme, le nouveau produit ou le nouvel outil peut être mis en service. Réussir à innover, c est aussi avoir du succès dans la concrétisation. l Éric Conti, Directeur Innovation & Recherche Innovation & Research Director A framework and method for true innovation It is an accepted fact today: innovation can improve the performance and stimulate the growth of large businesses. There are conditions, however. The innovation must be disruptive, relevant to the business, and effectively implemented. As it turns out, creativity alone is not enough to satisfy those conditions. The where and the how of innovation are crucial, too. SNCF has established the where by adopting a clearcut strategy with five key areas of innovation. It has also taken steps to define the how. Innovation & Research is thus leading the efforts in these five areas using a specific method consisting of three phases. I&R also follows the (good) ideas from start to finish, all the way to the stage of commercial utilisation. The first phase is Detachment. Here analyses and knowledge from all sectors of activity are drawn on to break out of the framework of known products and practices in rail transport in order to formulate innovative, formalised and structured concepts. These are applied to create new objects and new practices in the next phase, Design. This is also where experimentation is done, with customers needs as the guide. In the third phase, Implementation, the Proof of Concept, the prototype or the pilot programme is adapted to a specific activity in cooperation with the operational staff. Ultimately, the new product or new tool can be put into service. D o c to r a n te a u CN A M, S a b i n e Tréfond a soutenu en mars, avec succès, sa thèse CIFRE SNCF portant sur la planification du matériel roulant. Ce travail de trois ans a permis de spécifier et de proposer un outil informatique d aide à la décision, capable de fournir des planifications résistant mieux aux imprévus, à niveau de ressources engagées équivalent. Alors que le trafic et les exigences de qualité de service vont croissant, ce projet de recherche laisse entrevoir des applications très concrètes p o ur le s o p é r ationnel s : «L e s modèles mathématiques que nous avons mis en place nous ont servi à développer un nouveau module info r mat iq ue, q ui v ie nt s inté grer au logiciel de planification Presto, explique Sabine Tréfond. Ce module donne la possibilité d e c o n s t r u i re d e s ro u l e m e n t s plus robustes, qui absorbent les aléas perturbant la circulation ferroviaire : ralentissements, faibles retards Fin 2013, des exper t s conception TER ont testé de façon concluante cette solution dans leur région. Elle est aujourd hui industrialisée.» l ROLLING STOCK A ROBUST THESIS! In March Sabine Tréfond, a doctoral student at the CNAM, successfully defended her thesis on rolling stock planning. Her three years of thesis research, done in a CIFRE contract at SNCF, resulted in the specification and proposal of decision-making software that would render planning less vulnerable to unpredicted events at equivalent levels of committed resources. At a time when traffic and the demand for quality service are increasing, this research offers the possibility of developing concrete applications for the operations 4 AVANCÉES - NOVEMBRE N 12 staffs: The mathematical models we have built have been used to develop a new computer module that has been integrated in the Presto planning software, explains Tréfond. With this module, it s possible to construct more robust rolling stocks roasters that can absorb unforeseen traffic disruptions like slowdowns, short delays and so on. TER design experts tested this solution successfully in their region in late 2013, and it has now been industrialised. l Contact : sabine.trefond@sncf.fr Avant l été, SNCF a lancé un Mini-lab afin de définir les grands axes de la recherche en acoustique pour les dix à quinze prochaines années. Le 3 juin, un premier séminaire a permis de réunir une vingtaine de collaborateurs de tous horizons. Parmi eux, des acousticiens de Innovation & Recherche, de l Agence d Essais Ferroviaires et du Centre d Ingénierie du Matériel, un sociologue de la DRH ou encore un architecte paysagiste de la Direction de l ingénierie. Lors de tables rondes, ces derniers se sont interrogés sur la valeur sociétale du bruit, et plus spécifiquement du bruit des transports. Trois experts du bureau d études ARUP, du Centre de recherche sur l espace sonore (CRESSON) et de l Ircam sont également intervenus : «À travers ce Mini-lab Prospective Acoustique, nous avons une volonté forte de changer de paradigme. Aujourd hui, il ne s agit plus simplement d orienter les normes et la législation en matière de bruit et de développer des solutions pour s y conformer. Il faut aller au-delà et construire l identité et l empreinte sonores de SNCF à l intérieur des trains, comme dans les paysages traversés. C est une réflexion qui concerne tout autant les voyageurs que les riverains. Trois nouvelles séances sont prévues en septembre, octobre et novembre prochains», indique Estelle Bongini, ingénieur acousticien I&R. l ACOUSTICS A NEW PARADIGM SNCF began a Mini-lab in the early summer to determine the main subjects of acoustics research for the next ten to fifteen years. A first seminar was held on 3 June. The some 20 participants coming from different areas included acoustics specialists from Innovation & Research, the Railway Testing Agency and the Rolling Stock Engineering Centre, a sociologist from Human Resources, and a landscape architect from the Engineering Department. During the roundtables, they focused on noise, and particularly noise generated by transport systems, in terms of social values. Three experts, from the engineering firm ARUP, the sound research centre CRESSON, and the acoustics and music research institute IRCAM, also spoke. Our aim with this Mini-lab is to change the paradigm, says Estelle Bongini, an I&R acoustics engineer. Today, it is no longer simply a matter of helping to shape standards and laws regarding noise and then developing solutions to comply with them. We need to go further and construct SNCF s sound identity and footprint both inside the trains and in the areas they cross. This research will affect passengers as much as people living along the rail lines. 5 ÉTUDE LA MOBILITÉ DES SENIORS Les résultats de l étude «Parcours Seniors» ont été présentés aux différentes branches voyageurs de SNCF. Ce travail exploratoire a été réalisé au printemps dernier par Innovation & Recherche et TER en collaboration avec le Cabinet d ethnographie Methos, afin de mieux comprendre les freins et les leviers à la mobilité des seniors. Trois approches complémentaires ont été mises en œuvre : entretiens à domicile ou dans les trains, observations et parcours accompagnés. Deux régions ont été choisies : Bretagne, région qui attire aujourd hui nombre de retraités, et Rhône-Alpes pour ses zones périurbaines vieillissantes. Des parcours porte à porte variés ont été étudiés (périurbain, intervilles, maillage régional, TGV vers ou depuis Paris, marche, bus, tramway, taxi, métro), incluant un focus sur les gares en région et à Paris. «Ce travail piloté par Caroline Guérin, chef de projet Design et usages clients, a révélé deux profils de seniors : hirondelles ou hiboux. Il a également permis d établir six typologies de parcours porte à porte en fonction de l articulation entre contraintes et stratégies. Autre résultat intéressant : les trajets en TER sont perçus comme adaptés au rythme des seniors, générant sociabilité et liberté», indique Corinne Talotte, Adjointe du chef du département Mobilités-Services I&R. Gares & Connexion, TER, TGV et Transilien se servent aujourd hui des résultats pour développer de nouveaux services. Une nouvelle offre a ainsi été levée en Bretagne dans ce sens. Ces résultats vont aussi permettre de passer des concepts développés dans le mini-lab seniors à des POCs (Preuves de Concept) dans les domaines de l accessibilité cognitive et de l apprentissage de la mobilité. l STUDIES A FOCUS ON MOBILITY FOR SENIORS The results of a survey on the travel of seniors were presented to SNCF s passenger transport branches. This exploratory study was done last spring by Innovation & Research and TER with the assistance of the ethnographic research firm Methos to gain a better understanding of the obstacles to mobility for seniors and how greater mobility can be promoted. Three complementary survey methods were used: interviews at home or in trains; observation; and accompanied travel. Two regions were selected: Brittany, a region that attracts many retirees today; and Rhône-Alpes, because of its aging population in suburban areas. A variety of door-to-door journeys were Contact : caroline.guerin@sncf.fr studied (suburban, intercity, regional, the TGV to and from Paris, walking, bus, tramway, taxi, and metro), and researchers also looked at stations in the provinces and Paris. This work, which was led by Caroline Guérin, head of the Design and Customer Behaviour project, revealed that there are two categories of seniors: swallows and owls. It also identified six types of door-to-door travel in terms of the relationships between constraints and strategies. Another interesting outcome: travel on TER regional trains is seen as well adapted to the rhythm of seniors lives and as contributing to sociability and freedom, notes Talotte, deputy to the head of the Mobility-Services department in I&R. Today, Gares & Connexion, TER, TGV and Transilien are using the results to develop new services, like those recently introduced in Brittany. 6 INNOVATION / INNOVATION EURAXLES L EUROPE DES 23 En octobre 2010, 23 opérateurs, constructeurs, fabricants d essieux, centres techniques et laboratoires s associaient au sein du projet européen Euraxles. Avec une ambition partagée : travailler ensemble à la modernisation des outils et méthodes d homologation et des process de maintenance des essieux. Parmi les partenaires de ce programme : des acteurs de premier plan comme SNCF, DB, Trenitalia, Lucchini RS, Valdunes, CAF, Alstom, l École nationale supérieure de chimie de Lille ou Polimi. Cette dynamique collective commence aujourd hui à porter ses fruits : «Nos recommandations vont être transformées en en rapport technique par le groupe CEN (Comité Européen de Normalisation), dans la perspective de procéder à la révision de la norme durant les prochaines années, explique Mac-Lan Nguyen, Responsable Systèmes Mécaniques et Interactions I&R. Il était essentiel que les principaux acteurs européens se réunissent pour faire évoluer les normes actuelles. Celles-ci ont été définies il y a plusieurs dizaines d années et limitent aujourd hui l introduction d innovations. En adoptant demain de nouveaux standards, nous allons pouvoir gagner en précision dans le dimensionnement des essieux.» l Contact : mac-lan.nguyen@sncf.fr EURAXLES THE EUROPE OF 23 In October 2010, 23 railway operators, axle manufacturers, technical centres and laboratories teamed up in a European project called Euraxles. Their goal was to work together to modernise the tools and methods for homologating axles as well as the maintenance processes for them. Among the partners in this programme were major companies like SNCF, DB, Trenitalia, Lucchini RS, Valdunes, CAF, Alstom, Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Lille and Polimi. This collective effort has begun to produce results today. Our recommendations are going to be transformed in into a technical report by the CEN the European Committee for Standardisation with a view to revising standards over the next few years, explains Mac-Lan Nguyen, head of Mechanical Systems and Interactions at I&R. It was essential for the main European parties involved to make a united effort to change the current standards. These were defined several decades ago, and they are holding up the introduction of innovations today. By adopting new standards, we are going to be able to increase the precision of axle dimensions. l 6 AVANCÉES - NOVEMBRE N 12 DESIGN SONORE QUAND LE SON FAIT SENS Élaborer un outil et une méthode qui permettent de retraduire l identité sonore de SNCF Telle est l ambition de la thèse sur laquelle travaille depuis un an Maxime Carron, de l Ircam, sous la responsabilité de Françoise Dubois, chef de projet à Innovation & Recherche. Ce projet inédit se situe à la frontière de l acoustique et du marketing : «Des jingles aux bruits des portes de salle ou au son lorsque le voyageur déploie sa tablette, cet outil va nous aider à concevoir des ambiances sonores qui véhiculent les valeurs de la marque SNCF à bord des trains ou dans les gares, indique Corinne Talotte, Adjointe du chef du département Mobilités-Services I&R. Sa vocation est d être un outil de dialogue et de co-conception. Il permettra aux acousticiens et marketeurs de partager un même vocabulaire et de collaborer toujours plus efficacement. Brillance, chaleur, grain Une quarantaine de termes acoustiques utilisés pour caractériser les sons seront ainsi illustrés d exemples, puis associés à des valeurs de la marque SNCF comme la qualité ou la bienveillance. Pour réaliser ce travail, un panel de spécialistes en acoustique, comprenant des ingénieurs et des musiciens, a été interviewé». l Contact : corinne.talotte@sncf.fr SOUND DESIGN WHEN SOUNDS MAKE SENSE Develop a tool and a method that would retranslate the sound identity of SNCF: that is the aim of the thesis on which Maxime Carron at the IRCAM has been working for a year under the supervision of Françoise Dubois, project manager at Innovation & Research. This original project is located on the borderline between acoustics and marketing. From the jingles to the noises of the doors or the sound made when a passenger opens his tablet, this to o l i s g o i n g to h e l p u s d e s ig n sound ambiences that will convey the values of the SNCF brand on board trains and in the stations, says Corinne Talotte, deputy to the department head of Mobility-Services I&R. Its role will be to serve as tool for dialogue and joint design activities. It will allow the acoustics and marketing people to share the same vocabulary and work together more ef ficiently. Bright, warm, grainy some forty terms used in acoustics to describe sounds will be illustrated with examples and then associated with values of the SNCF br and suc h a s qualit y or c aring. To carry out this work, a panel of acoustics specialists, including engineers and musicians, were interviewed. l

7 FOOT UNE INTERFACE QUI VA DROIT AU BUT En 2013, Transilien a fait appel à Innovation & Recherche afin de travailler sur son Futur Outil Opérationnel Transilien (FOOT). À terme, cet te nouvelle Interface Homme-Machine (IHM) pourrait constituer le point d e n t r é e u n i q u e v e r s t o u t e l i n fo r m a t i o n voy a g e u r e t la produc tion du trafic en Îlede-France : «Aujourd hui, les personnels des centres opérationnels de Transilien utilisent plus de soixante-dix outils diffé re nt s p o ur sui v re l ét at d u système en temps réel. Notre objectif était donc de proposer une interface plus intégrée qui favorise une visualisation claire et sans couture de l information, ind iq ue Mat hild e C ar lier, d u groupe Modélisation et Optimisation de la Décision à I&R. Afin de répondre au plus près aux besoins du terrain, nous avons organisé six ateliers qui ont réuni à chaque fois entre dix et trente opérationnels. À l issue de ce processus, nous leurs avons présenté différentes maquettes de l inter face. Très modulable et ergonomique, celle-ci s appuiera sur des widgets pour af ficher les informations concernant les gares, les lignes ou encore les roulement s d e matér iels. Un prototypage sera bientôt réalisé par les équipes SI pour valider techniquement les concepts proposés.» l Contact : mathilde.carlier@sncf.fr FOOT AN INTERFACE RIGHT ON GOAL In 2013, Transilien, the Paris region commuter network, asked Innovation & Research to work on its Futur Outil Opérationnel Transilien (FOOT), a new man-machine interface that could ultimately provide a single gateway to all passenger and train operations information for the Paris region. Today, the personnel in the Transilien operations centres use more than seventy different tools to monitor the system in real time. Our objective is to propose a more integrated interface that will display the information clearly and seamlessly, says Mathilde Carlier, from the Modelling and Decision Optimisation group at I&R. To fully meet operational requirements, we set up six workshops, each of which was attended by between ten and thirty people from the operational staff. At the end of this process, we showed them several different mock-ups of the interface. This modular and easy-to-use interface will rely on a system of widgets to display information on stations, lines and the status of rolling stock. The IS team will be making a prototype soon to validate the technical aspects of the proposed concepts. l MATÉRIEL ROULANT UNE MEMBRANE VERTE, 100 % SANS SOLVANT En partenariat avec le Centre d Ingénierie du Matériel (CIM) et l entreprise Paulstra-Hutchinson, SNCF participe au développement d une membrane de suspensions pneumatique à la pointe du développement durable. Celle-ci est en effet fabriquée sans le moindre ajout de solvant. Une petite révolution, puisque jusqu ici, il fallait 3 litres de cette substance chimique pour lier entre elles les couches d élastomères et les trames en polyamide. Cette innovation améliore la sécurité des opérateurs en éliminant les risques d émanations de solvant. Elle se révèle d autant plus porteuse que son coût de revient est 5 % inférieur à celui d une membrane classique et sa durée de vie de 40 à 50 % plus longue. Si ce développement ne concerne pour le moment que les membranes de petit diamètre des matériels roulants de type TER (Francilien, Regilolis ), il devrait être demain généralisé aux membranes de plus grande dimension des TGV. Deux automotrices AGC tricaisse devraient être prochainement équipées de cette solution écologiquement responsable. Cet essai permettra de confirmer les résultats obtenus sur banc et de valider la généralisation à terme. l Contact : philippe.cadieu@sncf.fr ROLLING STOCK A GREEN MEMBRANE CONTAINING NO SOLVENTS SNCF, working with the Rolling Stock Engineering Centre (CIM) and the manufacturer Paulstra-Hutchinson, is helping to develop a membrane for pneumatic suspension at the cutting edge in terms of sustainable development. That s because the membrane is manufactured without solvents. This represents a minor revolution, since until now it took 3 litres of chemical substances to bind together the elastomer layers and the polymide webbing. This innovation improves worker safety by eliminating toxic emissions from solvents. Additional bene- fits are 5%-lower production costs than for conventionally manufactured membranes, along with a 40%-to-50% longer life span. Although for the time being this new process has been used only for small-diameter membranes for regional trains (Francilien, Regilolis, etc.), there are plans to extend its application to the manufacture of membranes for TGVs. This ecologically responsible process will be used soon to produce membranes for two three-unit AGC railcars. This will allow confirmation of test bench results and validate the process for wider use in the future. l AVANCÉES - NOVEMBER No. 12 7

Starting in October 2013, trials were conducted on a TGV Duplex trainset, mainly on the ParisLyon-Marseille line. We were able to map the coverage of each mobile operator s network. In the zones where coverage is limited, there are a number of solutions that could be worked o u t w i t h t h e operators to improve it.
