1 Curriculum Vitae [short] Ruedi Baur, designer, born in 1956, French and Swiss nationalities, graduated in graphic design from the Zurich School of Applied Arts. After having created BBV (Lyon - Milan - Zurich) in 1983, he sets up in 1989 Integral concept, presently constituted of five independent partners studios being able to intervene jointly on any cross-disciplinary project. Since 1989 in Paris, 2002 in Zurich and 2007 in Berlin, Intégral Ruedi Baur has been working on 2- and 3-dimensional projects within the different fields of visual communication: identity, orientation and information programs, exhibition design, urban design. Between 1989 and 1994, he coordinates the department of design «information space» of the Beaux-Arts school of Lyon where he organizes between 1994 and 1996 a third cycle based on «civic and design spaces» theme. In 1995, he becomes professor (corporate design) at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst of Leipzig (HGB Leipzig), at which he was nominated rector from 1997 until He creates there in 1999 the Interdisciplinary Design Institute (2id). Ruedi Baur is member of Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) since 1992 and member of the»cafa Art Research Centre for the Olympic Games«since Ruedi Baur is today professor at the Luxun Academy of Shenyang, the Central Academy of Beijing (CAFA), the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris (ENSAD) and at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). Since 2004, he is with Stefanie Vera Kockot and Clemens Bellut in charge of the Design Research Institute of the ZHdK: Design2context including a postgraduate program «Design Culture» certificated as MAS.

Attends school in France; passes baccalaureate in 1975, in Chambéry : training in graphic design: apprenticeship with Michaël Baviera; studies at the Zurich School of Applied Arts (Schule für Gestaltung); obtains diploma in graphic design in During this time Baur meets such well-known figures as Joseph Müller Brockmann, Richard Paul Lose and Max Bill. 1978: helps organise an exhibition on graphic design in the public interest during the Congress of the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (ICOGRADA) in Zurich. Various projects in collaboration with the graphic designer and publisher Lars Müller, with whom in 1978 and in parallel with his studies he sets up his first graphic-design workshop : works in Basel with the noted authority on signage Théo Balmer, and completes his training in that field. Notable projects include the Grün 80 Landscaping Exposition and work on pedestrian signage for the City Of Basel and on signage for Marseilles airport. 1980: Baur sets up a second workshop in Zurich in collaboration with Sereina Feuerstein. His professional activity is divided between France and Switzerland. 1983: he moves to Lyons and with Michaël Baviera and Peter Vetter founds the BBV workshops (Lyons, Milan, Zurich). Collaborates with Françoise Guichon at the Musée Savoisien; with Christine Breton (Grenoble Modern Art Museum, École de Nîmes, City of Marseilles); and with Thierry Raspail (curator, Contemporary Art Museums of Lyons) and Marie-Claude Jeune on a visual identity for Contemporary Art in Lyons (including the Lyons Space for Contemporary Art [ELAC], the St- Pierre Museum, the annual Arts in October festival, and the Lyons Biennale of Contemporary Art). During the 1980s Bauer creates many visual identities for museums and other institutions connected with contemporary art, collaborates with many artists, and designs more than a hundred books and exhibition catalogues, including literature for the successive Arts in October festivals in Lyons, for ELAC, for the first three Lyons Biennales of Contemporary Art; and for the Villa Arson in Nice, the Grenoble Museum, and so on). In 1984 Bauer opens the Projects design gallery in his workshop and between that year and 1989 is responsible for numerous shows and publications, among them Made in Switzerland ; A.G. Fronzoni ; AGI Italy; Kieler Woche ; Michaël Baviera ; English Design: Lovergrove and Brown, Peter Saville, Peter Keene ; Colours Alone ; and German Design: Dieter Rams, Anton Stankowski, Otl Aicher marks the beginning of Bauer s collaboration with Françoise Calvez (Regional Centre for Cultural Action [CRAC], Valence, France) and Christian Bernard (Rhône-Alpes Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs [DRAC]; Villa Arson, Nice; subsequently the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Geneva). In 1987 Baur wins the celebrated German Kieler-Woche prize for graphic design. Begins working with Pippo Lionni. In 1988, Baur moves to Paris with part of his team. Works for the Georges Pompidou Centre on such shows as The Japan of the Avant-Gardes, Art et Pub (Art and Advertising), Magicians of the Earth, Lucio Fontana, François

3 Morellet, and Pierre Charreau ; for the Picasso Museum ( First Works, Picasso and Drawing ); for the VIA organization for interior design; for the Cartier Foundation (Marie-Claude Beaud); and for the Bagouet Company (Dominique Bagouet and Liliane Martinez). 1989: Baur s first personal show, at the Maison du Livre, de l Image et du Son (Book, Image and Sound Museum) in Villeurbanne (France). After developing a visual and signage identity for this institution in 1987, he designs a logotype for the town of Villeurbanne in 1995 (reworked in 2005). In this same year of 1989, Baur inaugurates his Intégral Ruedi Baur and Associates (IRB) workshops in Paris and Lyons and joins with Pippo Lionni to develop the Intégral Concept interdisciplinary network of workshops. IRB develops numerous two- and three-dimensional projects in the different realms of design: visual-identity programmes, orientation and information systems, exhibition design, urban design, and so on. (Pippo Lionni would leave the network in 1992.) : as a professor at the Lyons School of Fine Arts of Lyons, Baur organises the Design Department around the notion of informational space and embraces an interdisciplinary approach focussed on the issue of scenography and urban design. Works in this context with Philippe Délis, a scenographic architect who becomes the third partner in Intégral Concept. Meets André Vladimir Heiz and Jules Keyser in the framework of pedagogical exchanges with the Kunstgewerbe Schule : artistic director of Beaux-Arts Magazine (Alain Cueff) : programming director of the exhibition space Design at the Maison du Livre in Villeurbanne. In collaboration with Blandine Bardonnet, he conceives and mounts the following shows: Atelier du Nord: Antoine Cahen, Claude Frossard, Werner Jeker ; Peret ; Dutch Typography ; Rejected Projects ; Jean Widmer ; System Errors ; Bruno Monguzzi ; Aller simple (One-Way Ticket): Latin American Design in Milan. Undertakes research into substraction-based design and links up with the designers Enzo Mari, Dieter Rams, Otl Aicher and Alexandro Ubertazzi. In 1991 Baur shows his work at the Institut für Neue Technische Form in Darmstadt (Michaël Schneider). In 1992 he is inducted into the International Graphic Alliance (AGI). In he develops visual-identity programmes for the Town of Saumur (France) and for the Théâtre de l Athénée in Paris. He partners with Philippe Délis on numerous exhibitions: Mode d Emploi (Directions for Use) at ELAC, Lyons; Machine à communiquer (Communicating Machine) and L homme et la santé (Man and Health) at the Cité des Sciences et de l Industrie, Paris; San Diego at the Grande Halle de la Villette, Paris; Swiss Modedesign at the Landesmuseum, Zurich; Francophonies in Lyons and Brussels; and so on. In 1993 Baur promotes a postgraduate curriculum on Civic Spaces and Design, a programme that he supervises His collaborators in this endeavour are the architectural theoretician Alain Charre, Philippe Délis and Sonia Diquemar. The approach is taken up in various localities and extended to issues of design in the global megalopolis. Baur s book La nouvelle typographie (1993) is published by the French government s National Centre for Pedagogical Documentation (CNDP). In , he teaches corporate design for two semesters as guest lecturer at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main; among his students are Laurent Lacour, Isabel Naegele and Markus Weisbeck. In 1994 his work is exhibited at the DDD Gallery in Osaka, at the GGG Gallery in Tokyo, and then in Frankfurt during the Design Horizonte Festival. In 1995 he is appointed to a professorship

4 at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig, where he presides over the System Design workshop. Begins work on the visual identity and signage of the Cité Internationale in Lyons for the architect Renzo Piano, on signage for the Domaine Nationale (national park) of Chambord and on a visual identity for the town of Nancy. In 1993, the Decorative Arts Union selects Intégral to develop a global signage system. In 1994 Baur and Fabien Chalon win the competition for a signage system for cultural activity along the Paris Normandy Motorway (project never realised). In , Baur is invited to participate in various workshops on ethno design in Colombia and Brazil with Giulio Vinaccia. He organises Tout près d ici nos prisons (Just Near Here, Our Prisons) for the French Observatoire Internationale des Prisons. In 1995 his work is shown at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe (Museum for Art and Trade) in Hamburg. His book 0, me, and 1 is published (Grenoble: Éditions l Observatoire, 1995). In 1997, he is named Rector of the Leipzig Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst, which he will direct until Publishes two books: Design ausstellen, Ausstellungsdesign (1997), with Philipp Teufel, and Architecture et graphisme (1998), which has grown out of his teaching at Leipzig. The publisher of both these works is Lars Müller. For three years, with Iris Reuter, Baur runs the Sudraum-Konferenz in Leipzig. For Judith Oexle, archaeologist-inchief of Saxony, develops design concepts for the exhibitions Zeit und Ewigkeit Time and Eternity), Längster Schnitt (with Axel Müller-Schöll) and 1x100 in Dresden : collaborations with the architects Renzo Piano (Cité Internationale in Lyons; Tjibaou Cultural Centre, Nouméa, New Caledonia), Jourda and Perraudin (Lyons School of Architecture; Palais de Justice (law courts), Melun, France); Lipsky and Rollet (École Supérieure d Ingénieurs [ESISAR], Valence, France); and Alberto Cattani/Valode and Pistre (UGC Ciné-Cité multiplex, Bercy, Paris) : new partners join the IRB network: Studio Vinaccia, Lars Müller, Lipsky-Rollet. The network now covers a large part of the entire field of design (visual communication, publishing, product design, museography, scenography, architecture, urbanism). In 1999 in Leipzig, Baur and a number of German designers found the Institute for Interdisciplinary Design (or 2id ), which Baur directs until In 2000 he is invited by the town of Hanover and Expo 2000 to create a poster as part of a workshop bringing together twelve graphic artists each from a different country. Intégral develops a visual identity and signage programme for the Pompidou Centre, the evolving logotype and graphic style for the Third Millennium Celebrations, and a variety of signage concepts for the City of Lyons. Beginning in 1999, Baur travels more and more often to China, where he teaches on a regular basis at the Luxun Academy in Shenyang and at the Central Academy in Beijing (CAFAA) and more occasionally at other design schools in Shenzen and Shanghai. In 2000, projects initiated include signage and visual identity for the International University City in Paris; identity for the Bayerische Rückversicherung, Munich; signage for Inselspital, Bern; and, with the architects Guigon and Guyer, museography and signage for the park and museum of Kalkriese, Germany. In 2001, Baur develops the signage for the Swiss National Exposition Expo.02 (Bienne, Morat, Neuchâtel, Yverdon). After winning the competition, he creates the visual identity of the International Seine-Saint-Denis Exposition 2004 (event cancelled in 2002). From 2001 to 2007, he participates in the annual international Design Summits held in Saint Moritz. Participates (2001-3) as a teacher in the postgraduate programme in signage at the Hochschule für Gestaltung, Kunst und Konservierung (HGKK) in Bern.

5 In 2002 Baur works with Axel Steinberger of IRB s Zürich workshop. Projects include signage and visual identities for Mediacampus and West Park in Zurich and for the Art-inn parking facility in Merano, Italy; and visual identity for the Zollverein School of Management and Design in Essen, Germany. After winning competitions, Baur creates identities for the Cologne-Bonn airport and for the Hôpital de l Île in Bern, and designs the signage for the Puy de Dôme tourist destination in France. Continues working with several artists for whom he designs catalogues, books and other informational materials (Tamara Grcic, Suzanna Fritscher, others). Also in 2002, Baur takes up the presidency of the French branch of the International Graphic Alliance (AGI France), a position that he retains until And he begins his logbooks (carnets de bord) for the Quotidien Visuel (Visual Everyday Life) exhibition (logs acquired by the Rare Books Department of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in 2004). This exhibition, created for the Anatome Gallery in Paris (2003), travels to various countries and is seen notably at the MUDAC in Lausanne (2004) and at the UQAM design centre in Montreal (2005). In 2003, the various partners in the Intégral Concept network are invited to contribute to the postgraduate Design Culture interdisciplinarity programme at the Zurich Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK). The following year, Baur leaves Leipzig to take up a professorship at ZHdK, where he sets up an Institute for Design Research, known as Design2context, of which he has been the codirector with Vera Kockot and Clemens Bellut ever since. In addition to research facilities, the Institute now offers a Master s degree in Design Culture along with specialised courses on research-related themes: From Repetitive Identity to Visual Language (2005-6); Design and Urban Identity (2006-7); and Disorientation and Orientation (2007-8). The year 2004 marks the start of Baur s association with the Université Laval in Quebec, for which he teaches courses at the university s international summer school in Percé. In 2007 Laval confers an honorary doctorate on him. En 2004 Baur accedes to membership of the governing board of the Internationales Forum für Gestaltung (IFG Ulm), heir institution to the famous Design School of Ulm. It is at his initiative, notably, that a prize is instituted in 2006 to support research in the sphere of politically oriented design. The journal Abstract invites him to edit a special issue on the visualisation of the future. The catalogue Soyez les bienvenus (Welcome), produced in collaboration with Michel Dector and Michel Dupuy, is published by ESBA Editions in Le Mans. IRB develops a signage plan for the new Vienne (France) airport. The group wins several competitions: for a directional and cultural signage system for the Eiffel Tower (unrealised); for signage and a visual identity for the Bundesgartenschau in Munich; proposals for the Cinémathèque Française and the Cité de l Architecture et du Patrimoine (Architecture and National Heritage Campus) in Paris (unrealised); for the Champs Libres cultural space in Rennes; and for the Montreal entertainment district (quartier des spectacles) of Montreal. In 2005 Baur creates a visual identity for the tramway system of the Rheims metropolitan region and develops a programme of institutional communication and signage for the Marseilles Regional Archives and Library. Publishes La Loi et ses conséquences visuelles (The Law and its Visual Impact), produced with Sébastien Thiery, Pierre Legendre, André Vladimir Heiz and others and published by Lars Müller. In 2006, several shows present not only the work of the IRB workshops but

6 also more political installations concerned with the evolution of our society. The year s main works in progress: scenography for the BMW Museum in Munich in collaboration with Uwe Brückner; signage for Montreal s museum network in collaboration with Jean Beaudoin; development of a range of pictograms for Peugeot and Citroën vehicles; work-site signage for the Île Seguin/Rives de Seine development in Paris; visual identity for the National Monuments Centre in Paris; signage and visual identity for Maison des Métallos (metalworkers headquarters) in Paris; visual-identity programme for the Rwanda Convention Centre; design of a book on Josef Müller-Brockmann published by Phaidon. In 2007, Baur reorganises his workshops, setting up the IRB Paris laboratory with Denis Coueignoux and IRB Berlin with Karim Sabano. Teaches at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD) in Paris. Publishes État des lieux avant transformation (Condition of Site before Transformation), a book produced with Sébastien Thiery and published by Éditions Jean-Michel Place. Participates in the Instant Urbanism exhibition on situationism at the Swiss Architecture Museum in Basel. Revival of the exhibition first mounted at the Roger Tator Gallery in Lyons in the context of Eurockéennes 07 de Belfort.
