4 collectif9 :: VOLKSMOBILES Rock-style classical music effervescent and uncompromising. "Montreal s collectif9 put on a spectacular show at last night s Chamberfringe. This, ladies and gentlemen, is where chamber music is going." OTTAWA CHAMBERFEST, JULY A nine-piece string ensemble, collectif9 presents classical music with rock-style charisma, combining boldness and the highest of musical standards with amplification and lighting. Bringing classical music to pop-culture audiences in diverse spaces, the group encourages interaction, facilitating dialogue with their listeners. In their show Volksmobiles, collectif9 delivers an uncompromising selection of short pieces, often folk-inspired. From Gagnon to Golijov, passing though Brahms and Schnittke, the repertoire of the group is integral to its identity. Between bursts of energy and dreamlike states, many of the presented pieces are original arrangements, and have rarely been played on the same program. The result? The music of collectif9 reveals the unexpected. Founded in Montréal in 2011, collectif9 already has a track record of dozens of concerts including large-scale performances at Club Soda, Rialto Theatre, and at Ottawa Chamberfest. In 2012, collectif9 introduced an innovative project of short videos, called LIVEshorts, broadcast over the internet at each live, unedited performance is produced in a unique setting. During the season, collectif9 will see the release of their debut album. Performances will bring the group across Ontario, New Brunswick, and China, and include an extensive tour throughout Quebec with the support of the Entrées en scène Loto-Québec program. 5 Artistic mission Founded out of a desire to reach a more diverse audience, the mission of collectif9 is to present classical works and ideas to a pop culture audience, particularly by demonstrating the connection a listener immersed in the pop world can feel with contemporary classical music. Playing short excerpts of works arranged for the group, collectif9 pays close attention to the energy, flow, and variety of each show as a whole, highlighting the use of familiar dance rhythms, developing transitions between pieces, talking to the audience, and using lighting effects to emphasize the character of each piece. With these techniques, collectif9 already counts in our supporters classical music lovers, punk rockers, and heavy metal bands. It is here that our development strategy emerges in order to continue to introduce new audiences to the music we love, collectif9 needs continuously expanding, continuously flexible methods. The audience development goals of collectif9 are: to bring classical music to those who haven t yet had the chance to hear it, breaking down the stigma of inapproachability; to encourage those who already experience and love classical music and to find new ways to help them express themselves through this medium; to foster communication and understanding between artists and others belonging to the same community; to create new mediums for different members of society to relate to one another, to foster a feeling of togetherness. As mentioned above, our unique concert presentation is one of collectif9 s most important methods of audience engagement. However, the group is also committed to the preparation of specially-designed school shows and presentations, masterclasses, and workshops. Put together specifically for the intended group, collectif9 s educational activities focus on: energy, pleasure, and exploration. 5

6 Artists biographies Thibault Bertin-Maghit, double bass & arrangements Masters in Performance under the tutelage of Eric Chappell from Université de Montréal. Founder and director of collectif9. Participates in numerous baroque, new music, chamber music and orchestra festivals and academies around the world. Advanced studies in musical theory and analysis. Experience in indie rock and heavy metal as a pianist, drummer and bassist. Perfomances with various artists and ensembles in Montreal, from Nouvel ensemble moderne to Ensemble Caprice. Double bass teacher at Collège de Montréal. Andrea Stewart, cello Doctoral candidate in Music Performance at McGill University in the class of M. Haimovitz. Member of Uccello, cello ensemble of Matt Haimovitz: album Angel Heart presented at the Carnegie Hall in Oct. 2013; album Meeting of the Spirits nominated for a Grammy in Recipient of a Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Doctoral Scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council in Canada. 10 Technical rider abstract 1. PERFORMANCE SPACE The performance space should be at least 20 feet (6 meters) wide and 13 feet (4 meters) deep. 2. STAFF COLLECTIF9 can be accompanied by up to three technicians: production manager, sound engineer, and light designer. Number and length of crew calls will determined by mutual agreement. 3. USE OF PERFORMANCE FACILITY Acoustic performance: COLLECTIF9 requires two hours on the day of the performance for installation and rehearsal. The typical schedule would be as follows: 4 5 pm Installation; 5 6 pm Rehearsal; 8 pm Performance (typically about 1,5 hours); Strike time (30min). Amplified performance: After PRESENTER installation of lighting and audio, COLLECTIF9 requires five hours on the day of the performance. The typical schedule would be as follows: 1 4 pm Installation/Technical setup & Focus; 4 6 pm Soundcheck/Rehearsal; 8pm Performance (typically about 1,5 hours); Strike time (1h). 4. SOUND (for amplified performance only) COLLECTIF9 provides 9 Naiant X-R clip-on condenser microphones, and 2 Neumann KM184 microphones. PRESENTER provides: - Mains - Mixer: minimum 16 inputs. 11 Technical rider abstract (continued) 5. LIGHTING Developping lighting designs is integral part of COLLECTIF9 proposition. As much as possible, the group would like to have access to a lighting system to allow to present the show with all its visual components. The following describes a lighting system required for a typical COLLECTIF9 performance: - A Minimum of 60 dimmers. - Approximately 60 lighting instruments. - A Hazer - A Control board with at least 24 manual faders. As a minimum requirement, PRESENTER provides the lighting equipment needed to light the performance space with clear and homogeneous light. 6. STAGE COLLECTIF9 provides nine music stands and nine battery-powered stand lights. 13 -NEW YORK- Jacqueline Vanasse Collectif 9: young, cool and dangerous Collectif 9 is nine friends, nine cool classical musicians that play in the most unusual and trendy places in town. The group was founded in 2011 after the nine musicians met to play through Golijov s Macho, Cool and Dangerous for two string quartets and double bass. It s Thibault the bassist who initially had the idea of creating the chamber ensemble. This instrumentation opens the door to a tremendous variety of repertoire, he says. It allows us to cover the divisi parts without ever being a mass, everyone is a soloist 80% of the time - it s our dynamic. The main goal of Collectif 9 is to play classical music but in a different setting, not just in a large concert hall where one must remain seated and silent for hours after a long day of work. The nine friends want to bring classical music everywhere and try out new things. Ready for anything, they have even participated in a heavy metal music contest! They admit wondering if they would fi nish the evening with a pichet de bière on their heads. They were preceded and followed by two rampaging groups jumping around on the stage and even on the public. We started with Prokofi ev s Dance of the Knights, recalled Fred, one of the violinists. For long seconds there was no more noise in the room. It was probably the shock of seeing guys supposedly as tacky as us with our little violins and our stands daring to appear there! But soon the room started to fi ll up and people were yelling. We had guys waving their hands and making sign of horns while gesticulating. We quickly carried on with the Presto from Vivaldi s Summer, and then people went crazy!! They ended up almost winning the competition! At that moment the group realized that classical music stills works, that you just have to believe it and bring it to people. Don t take it wrong; Collectif 9 is not just a bunch of good friends wanting to have some fun with their fi ddles. And the music they are performing is not some easy listening rearrangements of best-sellers classic but real Piazzolla, Schnittke and Shostakovich. The chamber music group is composed of graduates from renowned conservatories and universities around the world. For now, the group wants to play classical music in the broad sense of the term. Even though they are not closed to the idea of exploring other kinds of music, they claim themselves to be of classical tradition in order to create a clear identity. I don t think we need to do pop music to seduce the public. However, to create an accessible formula, we gladly seek the ease and stage presence that pop artists have, explains Thibault. Collectif 9 wants to bring classical music to everyone and try to fi nd links between what people know, what they are familiar with and the classical repertoire. The words have never really been said, we never said ok, come, we ll play classical music we just play music, says Thibault. The group includes more and more pieces in their repertoire and is now ready for concert opportunities. In concert they prefer to play a succession of short movements, which last around 5-6 minutes, rather than the entire pieces to retain the attention of their audience. They mostly play works from the 20th century, since, according to the young musicians, their aesthetics and language are more accessible and closer to the audience they are trying to reach. Collectif 9 says they are very happy with the start of their career, they feel proud and lucky with the way events have unfolded. It seems like every opportunity leads to another. They are not yet playing in concert halls every month but they are recording monthly short videos. Called LIVEshorts, the concept consists of recording a chosen piece live (without any studio editing) and presenting it as a small clip on the web. The idea is to show different facets of what they are, each video expressing an aspect of their group identity. Since the LIVEshorts can be one s fi rst taste of Collectif 9, they make sure that all musical and visual aspects are consistent, complete and represent the group. In the future they would like to go on tour and summer festivals, adopting the approach of a real music band. The desire to be there and to make music together is still the main reason for the group s existence. Their number is their strength. When you are 2, 3 or 4 it s more diffi cult to agree and it tends to become easily stifl ing. Being nine helps us to stay the course despite the small problems that may be encountered along the way, they believe. Collectif 9 faces a dual challenge. Keen to keep their classical music fans, they must maintain a high quality musical product. On the other hand, to appeal to a wider audience, they want to present music in a way that will attract people and keep them interested. From punk enthusiasts to OSM musicians, everyone comes to Collectif 9 s concerts and enjoys them. They are young, cool and dangerously addictive and the living proof that classical music is not dead yet! 13

Musique classique makes you think of your grandmother s dentures soaking in Polident, correct? Well, mes chères, I would like to change your beautiful minds. Drum roll, svp! May I introduce: Collectif9 at the Rialto Theatre! Hip, Fun & Sexy. 12 classical musicians on a beautifully preserved stage, which is a National Historic Site: are you f*cking kidding moi?! The building is in a word: gorgeous. Inspired by the Paris Opera House, over time this 1920s movie palace eventually became the elegant venue that it is today. Featuring live performances in Montréal s well known quartier Mile End, it s a bumpin theatre with live acts almost EVERY SOIR of the week: Incroyable! Ruby red backdrop avec gilded gold accents lighted by victorian inspired fixtures? Tellement belle! Now, the musicians. 4 violins, 2 altos, 2 violoncellos & 1 contrebasse as well as a percussionist, contreténor & soprano. They played 11 pieces from many different composers with a sprinkling of the 2 vocalists. IE Giovanni to Brahms to Shostakovich to Bartok. What I appreciated most was how accessible the music was to everyone. Oui, the musicians rocked out with each other, but the wicked lighting assisted in creating a stadium concert feel. On top of it all, their collective musicianship was ÜBER tight. Simple classical musique at it s best: PRÉCISE! What a gift to listen to. Vintage petit syrah for the ears, indeed. The talent is incredibly sexy. I now understand why classique musicians were rockstars back in the day. If it weren t for my darn tights, the contrebasse would ve been the proud owner of a black lacy petit vêtement too far? That s how je roll! And, a shout out to Andrea Stewart, one of the vioncelles. She had a solo that I wish I could ve recorded, but this femme didn t want to be disrespectful mon premiére voyage out. Plus, let s be honest, I was mesmerized. Her fingers were moving so fast that they akin to Little ADHD Timmy aprés eating his entire pillow case of hallowe en candy: CRAZY FAST! I m honestly thrilled that I got to attend: merci beaucoup to Barbara & Rialto Theatre. Virtuoso musicians, indeed. Prochaîne concert, I m nixing the tights ; ). Bisous, Mlle Fab anty tosser xx 14

15 Classical music revisited with Collectif 9 **** Par Andrew Crust, 14 février 2013 The string nonet Collectif 9 offers its public something truly as valuable as it is rare: classical repertoire revisited with passion and fearlessness. They are a group of very young and fi ercely talented string players, many of whom play in the city s professional orchestras. They enthusiastically align themselves with the growing movement called Classical Revolution which seeks to bring art music to a variety of venues and audiences with the goal of obliterating the stigmas of musty conventionalism and tradition far too often associated with the genre. In working towards that aim, Collectif 9 had a triumph tonight. The venue was the ornately decorated Théâtre Rialto, its walls adorned with gold inlay and peppered with Victorian chandeliers, juxtaposed with extensive rock-band lighting and psychedelic fog. The members of the ensemble were arranged in a rock-band formation as well: two cellos and a bass in the back where a drummer might be, two violins and violas off to the side (rhythm guitar and bass) and rotating players front and center (lead singer and solo guitar). In fact, the group once performed in a Battle of the Bands competition, and fared surprisingly well with their Shostakovich and Vivaldi against heavy metal and punk. Each instrument was amplifi ed, which, after some fine tuning throughout the performance, ended up sounding quite balanced while maintaining the tone of the instruments themselves. They began rather surprisingly with Mozart s Divertimento in D major, K136, though just as we began to settle into that sonic world the music was interrupted by excerpts from Prokofi ev s Romeo and Juliet. It was clear from the onset that no one player stood out as being stronger or weaker than the others -- all members of the ensemble had a more than impressive faculty on their respective instruments. Most of the music this evening needed to be arranged, a task which was given to contrabassist Thibault Bertin-Maghit, who, aside from providing the music, served as the rhythmic foundation of the group. His playing, much like the rest of the group, was at all times a healthy mix of technical control and abandon. A very effective arrangement of Brahms Rondo alla Zingarese from the Piano Quartet no. 1, Op. 25 was next, a piece which would initiate the gypsy theme so persistent this evening. This was a well-informed arrangement, no doubt drawing both from the Brahms original and the Schoenberg transcription for full orchestra. Bach, Bartók, Shostakovich and Hindemith followed, and then a wild and savage version of the Finale of Beethoven s Moonlight Sonata. It was very refreshing to witness the blending of casualness and competence in a continent which is far too often obsessed with the academic process of music making. These musicians don t elevate the composers to demigod status, but instead fi nd great value in the process of the performance itself, and the delivery of that art the great composers made. Soprano Samantha Louis-Jean entered the stage to perform Vivaldi s In furore iutissimae irae, a tempestuous motet for soprano, two violins, viola and bass, made of perilous melismas and leaps into the heights of her range. Engulfed in colorful strobe lights and spinning fog, she looked more like Tina Turner than a classically trained vocalist, but she certainly sounded the part her voice easily sustained the rolling coloratura lines and huge intervallic leaps. It would have been nice to hear one more piece with her. The second half featured more Vivaldi, a composer who is so often revered by metal bands a fact which clearly inspired this performance. The interpretation was certainly visceral in its effect, though the amplifi cation and reverb, paired with the breakneck speed at which they played it, resulted in a loss of clarity. Romero, Golijov, more Vivaldi, and Schnittke followed, and with each piece it seemed as if the group was becoming more and more comfortable with the amplifi cation and the venue itself. There were some very fi ne solos from each of the violinists: Roland Arnassalon, Yubin Kim, Grégor Monlun, and Frédéric Moisan, whose profi le seemed a modern reincarnation of Franz Liszt, the original rockstar. Two encores were demanded, and the fi nal piece, Turceasca by the Romani-Romanian group Taraf de Haïdouks was the most impressive display of the evening. The audience was obviously made up mostly of musicians, because unlike most audiences who clap along with the music, this one never lost a beat even though an extended accelerando. Collectif 9 has a lot of things going for them: youth, prodigious talent, style, and a well-run administration and marketing plan. If their goal is to bring classical music to the public in new ways and new places, I think they ll fi nd that Montréal is the perfect place to do it, and I think it s clear that their path to success is only beginning. 15

Aller s assoir dans une salle de concert pendant deux heures dans le plus grand silence, ce n est pas pour tout le monde. On tenait à offrir une alternative sans pour autant dénigrer le format traditionnel. Pour ce qui est du répertoire, on interprète les compositeurs classiques, et on ne réarrange pas de chansons populaires pour ensemble de cordes. Il y a évidemment des morceaux connus de tous. C est une porte d entrée, mais on ne livre pas que du bonbon. L objectif est de faire des ponts avec le reste du répertoire. Sur deux heures de spectacles, on présente des compositeurs et des morceaux moins connus, par exemple une pièce de Geof Holbrook, composée spécialement pour nous. J espère d ailleurs qu il y en aura d autres. Comment en êtes-vous venu à monter le spectacle du Club Soda? C était une première expérience? Oui, c était la première fois qu on travaillait avec le concepteuréclairagiste Félix Desrochers et la metteure en scène Mylène Chabrol. Après le Divan Orange, on a fait d autres spectacles, au Rialto notamment. On apportait de nouvelles idées d un spectacle à l autre. C est la raison pour laquelle on dit que le show du Club Soda était le fruit de trois ans de travail. À chaque concert, on essaye d améliorer un peu le produit. On expérimente et on propose quelque chose de différent. Y a tellement à faire encore. Les Méconnus : Parle-moi de ton background et de celui des membres du collectif. Thibault : On a tous une formation classique académique dans les conservatoires et universités de ce monde. Avec des expériences musicales diverses. Moi, avant la contrebasse, je jouais de la basse électrique et de la batterie dans des groupes de rock. Comment le projet collectif9 est-il né? On était tous à Montréal et on avait tous plus ou moins terminé nos études. C était une manière de continuer à jouer ensemble et de présenter la musique comme on en avait envie, c est-à-dire de la sortir de son milieu habituel et de l offrir à un autre public. C est d ailleurs pourquoi on a fait nos trois premiers concerts au Divan Orange. Est-ce que votre interprétation est influencée par la salle? C est sûr. On joue toujours différemment selon le cadre. C est ce qui est excitant : s approprier cette musique et la dévoiler dans un univers scénique singulier, avec des arrangements adaptés. On ne dénature pas les morceaux, mais on met l accent sur certains éléments, pour que ce soit plus pertinent en contexte et pour le public. J imagine que vous n êtes pas soumis à la même critique? Non, ce n est pas le même regard et ce n est pas la même écoute. Les gens remarquent autre chose et l appréciation dépasse la stricte performance. Ça nous donne davantage de liberté et laisse de la place à des idées qu on pourrait diffi cilement avancer dans un contexte traditionnel. Vous êtes-vous donné une mission d initiation à la musique classique pour public néophyte? Non. Ce n est pas tant une question d initiation ou d éducation que d ouverture d esprit. Comme tout autre type de musique, on n a pas besoin de connaître pour aimer. En fait, je crois que c est plutôt le contexte ou le format qui ne rend pas service à Qu est-ce qui s en vient pour vous en 2015? Grâce au programme Les entrées en scène Loto-Québec, qui offre un appui à la tournée professionnel au Québec, on sera sur la route. Et après avoir surtout concentré nos énergies sur la vidéo et les concerts, on enregistre fi nalement un CD au printemps. Il y a aussi d autres choses qu on ne peut pas encore annoncer. Bref, on va être pal mal occupé. 16

17 MAUD CUCCHI Le 26 juillet 2014 COLLECTIF9: DÉMOCRATISER LE CLASSIQUE Que la musique classique devienne plus accessible à tous: tel semble être le mot d ordre qui prévaut chez collectif9, formation de neuf musiciens établis à Montréal qui préfèrent de loin l appellation de «groupe» à celui, plus sérieux, d «ensemble à cordes». Leur concept? «Jouer de la musique classique en la présentant différemment et en utilisant les codes associés à la musique populaire.» Ainsi parle Thibault Bertin-Maghit, contrebassiste, arrangeur et fondateur de ce collectif fondé il y a trois ans autour d une idée simple: interpréter de courtes pièces en réarrangeant la partition pour en faire ressortir les mélodies et les rythmes folkloriques. En d autres termes, l idée était de rendre le classique accessible à un public non initié qui craindrait la longueur d un concert habituel ou rebuté par son côté guindé. Béotiens et initiés qui s attendraient à assister au concert de deux ou trois pièces classiques en une soirée seront surpris de découvrir le traitement qu en livre collectif9. «Nous sélectionnons des mouvements de quelques minutes seulement, cela permet d en interpréter davantage et d avoir un programme plus dynamique», explique Thibault Bertin-Maghit. Comme un concert rock Chaque spectacle se construit par l agencement de courts extraits d oeuvres arrangés pour neuf musiciens. Chaque mouvement bénéfi cie d une introduction explicative pour faire comprendre la composition et tout le travail du compositeur au public. Le groupe encourage d ailleurs les spectateurs à applaudir entre les mouvements, réaction plutôt mal perçue en concert classique régulier. «Le défi reste toujours de décoincer la public, de faire en sorte qu il se sente à l aise d interagir.» Mais attention, on ne sacrifi e rien de la qualité. En concert gratuit demain après-midi, sur le parvis du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada, collectif9 prévoit d interpréter sur des instruments amplifi és Brahms, Bartók ou encore Piazzolla. Le soir à 22h, en prestation payante au Centre pour les arts Sainte-Brigitte, on découvrira un patchwork musical tissé des partitions de Hindemith ( ), aussi bien que de Geof Holbrook, jeune compositeur canadien né en «On ne dénature pas l essence de la musique: on l ajuste, on la transforme», fait valoir le musicien dont la carrière instrumentale allie rock indépendant, heavy metal, musique baroque, contemporaine, de chambre et d orchestre. Selon la philosophie inclusive du collectif, il n y a aucune hiérarchie entre les membres, sur scène: violonistes et altistes changent volontiers de pupitre, donnant tour à tour à chacun l occasion de s exprimer différemment. Et tous jouent debout, sans partition; «une façon d instaurer une distance avec la musique écrite et de rendre notre prestation plus vivante sur scène». Le concept original de collectif9 refl ète bien les préoccupations actuelles d un secteur musical soucieux de se réinventer: «notre projet cadre parfaitement avec la volonté des programmateurs de musique classique de rejoindre de nouveaux publics, fait remarquer Thibault Bertin-Maghit. Pour ça, notre musique intéresse. Après, ce qu en pensent les puristes...» 17

Collectif9 : musique classique, attitude rock Le mardi 22 avril 2014 Les membres du groupe Collectif9 Photo : La formation Collectif9 présente un spectacle intitulé Folk, que les membres décrivent comme imprégné de folklore, du bluegrass, de tango, de trad québécois et de musiques d Europe de l Est. Ce groupe de musique classique, passé maître dans la fusion des genres, se moque des conventions. Karyne Lefebvre en reçoit deux des membres, Jérémie Cloutier, violoncelliste, et Thibault Bertin-Maghit, contrebassiste. Ils se sont connus dans les classes de musique classique et se sont réunis avec un même désir de briser les règles trop rigides de la tradition. Ils ont eu aussi le goût de jouer dans des salles différentes. «Le soutien du public pendant la prestation change complètement, et ça nous a amenés ailleurs», souligne le contrebassiste. La virtuosité et l énergie deviennent les ingrédients à la base de ces concerts explosifs. Leur formule les amène à être méticuleux sur le choix des pièces. Certaines sont contemporaines, d autres, plus accessibles, mais elles doivent toutes être rythmées et courtes pour soutenir l ambiance recherchée. Ces neuf jeunes musiciens cherchent donc à amener la musique classique dans des endroits populaires qui tranchent avec la tradition classique et qui proposent une musique dense et actuelle. 19 Clavier bien tempéré La musique et l écriture ont été de tout temps les deux pôles de la vie créatrice de l auteure. Ce site se veut donc un hommage à la musique (particulièrement classique) et à la littérature, mais aussi au théâtre et aux autres manifestations artistiques. SAMEDI 16 FÉVRIER 2013 Collectif 9: du classique dans ta face Ils sont neuf, ils affichent une dégaine d enfer, portent la veste sur le jean juste assez usé. L une arbore un haut à paillettes, un autre un borsalino qui fait sourire d emblée. À bas le pingouin! Ils jouent du classique lourd, comme d autres du rock, dans des lieux improbables, où ne frayent pas habituellement les amateurs de classique, dans l espoir justement de briser les frontières entre les genres et de rejoindre un nouveau public. Ainsi, mardi, Collectif 9 s est produit devant un Rialto presque bondé. Ceux qui aiment écouter Mozart dans leur Jaguar frémiront: les musiciens sont amplifiés et les jeux de lumière font partie du concept. Décoiffant! Qui êtes-vous? Lucie Montréal, Québec, Canada est pianiste, pédagogue, journaliste et rédactrice spécialisée en musique classique, en théâtre et en littérature. Les arts la font vibrer, sous toutes leurs formes. J admets avoir eu moi-même besoin de quelques pièces pour m habituer au fait que, malgré que l on ait affaire à un orchestre de chambre (deux quatuors et une contrebasse), le nombre de décibels se maintiendrait toujours au-dessus d un certain seuil. Si «Montaigus et Capulets» tiré du Roméo et Juliette de Prokofiev fonctionne très bien avec le son «dans le tapis», d autres propositions m ont un peu moins convaincue. Chaque attaque, chaque bondissement de l archet s en trouvent magnifiés, parfois à la limite de la distorsion (mais des ajustements ont été heureusement apportés en cours de concert). Paradoxalement, dans les pièces intimes (je pense ici à une superbe interprétation de la Trauermusik de Hindemith mettant en vedette l altiste Scott Chancey), cette amplification m a paru moins gênante. Les musiciens attaquent Vivaldi comme du Led Zep. (Bravo à Yubin Kim, presque kamikaze, qui n a pas hésité à décaper Les Quatre Saisons!) Les lumières (splendides notamment dans le Schnittke) enveloppent, balaient, éclatent. On passe de Bach à Piazzolla ou Golijov, de Brahms à Chostakovitch ou Bartók. Rien de figé: violonistes et altistes changent de pupitre, chaque membre se voyant offrir une occasion de briller. Contre toute attente, aucune concession n est faite côté répertoire. Il n est pas ici question de diluer la grande musique en la simplifiant, mais bien de la porter ailleurs. Quand la soprano Samantha Louis-Jean se joint un groupe, gainée dans une petite robe noire à faire tomber dans les pommes tous ces messieurs, charismatique comme pas possible, et chante In furore iutissimae irae de Vivaldi, on se dit que quelqu un a trouvé un passage direct entre les 17e et 21e siècles et oublié de nous en avertir. (On aurait bien repris un air ou deux, d ailleurs!) Dans un monde où bien peu osent s aventurer dans la zone minée entre surspécialistes et crossover, Collectif 9 propose une expérience nouvelle, rafraîchissante, qui ne tombe jamais dans la facilité. C est devenu trop rare. Je vous laisse sur un arrangement (signé par Thibault Bertin-Maghit, le contrebassiste) du dernier mouvement de la Sonate «à la lune» de Beethoven. Rendu de cette façon, on ne peut même pas en vouloir à Collectif 9 d avoir piqué aux pianistes une page de leur répertoire. 20 De la salle de concert à la brasserie Quartier libre - Le journal indépendant des étudiants de l Université de Montréal KEVIN GRAVIER Mardi 29 janvier 2013 Collectif 9 est un ensemble d instrumentistes à cordes, diplômés de l UdeM pour la plupart. Depuis plus d un an, il se joue des codes sociaux en transportant la musique classique dans des lieux où on ne l attend pas. Rencontre avec trois membres d un collectif anticonformiste. Composé de quatre violons, de deux altos, de deux violoncelles et d une contrebasse, Collectif 9 est avant tout une bande d amis réunie autour de la musique. Une vocation que ces musiciens ne se contentent pas d apprécier ensemble, car le public est visiblement de la partie. «Le cœur de notre projet est de donner la chance au plus grand nombre de ressentir ce qui nous fait grandir dans la pratique de notre musique», explique la violoncelliste Andrea Stewart. «Le répertoire classique est notre langage, mais notre fi nalité est de passer au travers de ce code-là pour pouvoir faire autre chose et s éclater!» renchérit son complice au violon, Frédéric Moisan. S amuser en compagnie de Brahms ou Vivaldi n est pas évident pour tout le monde. Selon le contrebassiste, Thibault Bertin-Maghit, la manière de présenter la musique y est pour beaucoup dans la séparation des univers artistiques. «Le terme «musique classique» est très réducteur alors que c est tellement plein de choses, estime-t-il. Ça englobe toutes les époques et tous les styles, de tous les continents.» Frustrés qu il soit a priori si diffi cile de «faire tripper tout le monde» autant qu eux, les membres de Collectif 9 souhaitent que le public soit dans son élément. «Il est important de ne pas se sentir limité quel que soit le lieu d écoute», pense Andrea. Leur souhait est de pouvoir jouer dans un contexte plus détendu, car ils observent que les concerts classiques pourraient se passer de bien des protocoles qui s interposent entre la scène et l auditoire. Ces musiciens se sentent à l étroit dans le cadre classique conventionnel, restrictif pour eux comme pour le public. «Après, on apprend à être plus à l aise dans le contexte conventionnel aussi, tempère Thibault. Ça n empêche pas de faire des concerts excellents.» Une expérience musicale hors-normes «Changer d environnement, permet d enlever la poussière sur quelque chose de trop traditionnel», insiste Frédéric. Leur entreprise de dépoussiérage repose sur un projet audacieux : exporter la musique classique dans des milieux qui ne lui sont pas dédiés. «Nous avons joué du Vivaldi devant de jeunes métalleux qui gueulaient en faisant «les cornes» avec leurs mains. C était génial!» se souvient Frédéric. Ces greffes culturelles restent néanmoins un véritable défi. Elles impliquent un effort d adaptation, mais aussi un important travail de sonorisation assumé par Rufat Aliev, le dixième équipier, qui veille à préserver l identité sonore du groupe. voulu, indique Frédéric. C est vraiment le même produit, juste avec un papier cadeau différent.» Cet emballage, c est le format de présentation. «L avantage de notre formule est que ce sont des pièces très courtes dans un code de type pop rock ; si tu n aimes pas, ça passe très vite à autre chose de complètement différent», rassure le violoniste, avant de souligner que l esprit de composition n en est pas dénaturé pour autant. «Tu prends conscience que dans la majorité des pièces que tu joues, tu passes à côté de beaucoup de choses dans un concert conventionnel parce que la vocation de cette pièce-là, ce n est justement pas d être assis.» Une volonté de partage Inclusifs, les membres de Collectif 9 sont particulièrement soucieux de «jouer pour du monde». Ils désirent s offrir au public avec générosité. «À partir du moment où tu fais preuve de liberté, que tu prends des risques, les gens se sentent beaucoup plus impliqués. Il y a une interaction qui se crée», explique Thibault. Cette complicité leur vaut des moments de partage intense avec les spectateurs pendant lesquels un violoniste peut se sentir suffi samment à l aise pour terminer son solo en se jetant à genoux sur la scène. «C est donnantdonnant, analyse Frédéric. C est quand tu donnes, et pas quand tu essaies juste de jouer tes notes, que la performance est meilleure. C est une question d implication.» Ces passionnés le confi rment avec enthousiasme : l expérience live est leur produit principal. «L idée est de savoir jusqu où on peut aller avec cette approche-là et de voir qui on peut séduire. Il nous reste encore plein d univers à explorer», annonce Thibault. En parallèle, le groupe souhaite défricher les voies de diffusion qui s offrent à lui. Il mène depuis octobre dernier un projet de publication mensuelle de capsules internet, les LIVEshorts, dont la prochaine mise en ligne est prévue pour le 4 février. Performances brutes dans des décors atypiques (chalet, brasserie), ces témoignages vidéo permettent un contact régulier avec le public. Thibault affi rme qu ils sont également de bons ambassadeurs de leurs représentations. «Ce que tu vois dans LIVEshorts, c est ce que tu vois sur scène.» Collectif 9 est très attaché à la qualité et à la fi délité de ses prestations. «Comme tout musicien classique qui se respecte, on aura toujours l exigence de suivre une ligne directrice qui est dans la veine de ce que le compositeur a Musique classique émancipée Collectif 9 Théâtre Rialto mercredi 13 février à 20 h
