Against this background the 60th Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense was devoted to these texts and their role and status in the formation of the New Testament Canon. The present volume contains the proceedings of the conference. Some of its contributions deal with well-known apocryphal gospels as, e.g., the Gospels of Thomas, Mary, Peter or Judas. Other essays treat thematic aspects, such as the influence of Platonic tradition, the way Jesus is presented in these gospels, or his dialogues with his (male and female) disciples. Important facets of the present volume are also early traditions about Jesus, e.g., in the so-called Infancy Gospels or in texts on the Mary. James Watts uses rhetorical analysis for this detailed exposition of Leviticus In dialogue with a wide variety of contemporary scholarship on Leviticus, this commentary also engages the history of the book s interpretation and the history of Jewish and Christian ritual practices. Leviticus s rhetoric aimed to persuade ancient Israelites to make offerings to God. It legitimized the monopoly of Aaronide priests over Israel s offerings and over determining correct ritual practice. The priests in turn established the Torah containing Leviticus as the authoritative text of Israel s religion. Rhetorical analysis of Leviticus thus leads to new insights into the role of priests in raising the Pentateuch to the status of scripture and in shaping the biblical canon. 5 BIBLICAL STUDIES 2013 Historical Commentary on the Old Testament LXVI-854 p. 79 EURO ECCLESIASTES SCHOORS A. Ecclesiastes, Qoheleth in Hebrew, is a fascinating book. It was written in the Hellenistic Period (3rd-2nd Cent. B.C.) and is one of the latest books in the Old Testament. The author is in search of an answer to the problem he poses in 1:3, What profit is there for humans from all their toil at which they toil under the sun?. The answer is: None. Therefore, Ecclesiastes begins and ends his book with a statement that everything is absurd. He does not try to explain away this reality, but he presents enjoyment of life as the best, though not the perfect, solution. He has been called an atheist, a pessimist, a sceptic, an Epicurean, but also an optimist, a believing or god-fearing man. He is certainly a nonconformist, and the best characterization is that he is a sceptic or even an agnostic, who undermines all sorts of certainties. He asks many questions but gives few answers. But all this is meant for the best: he speaks honestly with a feeling of compassion with tormented humankind. His book often sounds very modern. The passages share verbal and conceptual resonances, including the suffering of a righteous individual, divine complicity in an unjust death, unresisting compliance, notions of cultic sacrifice, exaltation and reward. Given their intertextual links, the two passages have been associated together in some ancient texts, within contexts of suffering righteousness and sacrifice. This book labels the apparent convergence of the primary texts as the Akedah Servant complex, and it develops a dialogic intertextual approach to determine the presence of the complex in selected passages: Stage I/ pre-70 CE Jewish writings; Stage II/ New Testament; Stage III/ post-70 CE (rabbinic and patristic) texts. This study indicates that the linking of Isaiah 53 and Genesis 22 is a long-standing tradition which resulted in shaping an early Christian model of atonement. Albert Pietersma has long been known as a champion of rigorous methodology. The present volume brings together under one cover his key papers on the critical study of the Septuagint. Together they present an evolving hermeneutic of translation that promises to reconcile descriptive analysis of the text (which aims at explanation) with the task of interpretation (which aims at understanding). The division of the volume into three parts corresponds roughly to three distinct stages in Pietersma s published work. The text critical studies of Part I lay the foundations for the exegetical investigations of Part II, which in turn open onto the hermeneutic discussion of more recent years, represented in Part III. The bulk of the material deals with the Greek Psalter, which has been a primary focus for Pietersma. This gives the contents of the volume a high-degree of thematic unity it will no doubt prove invaluable for those currently working on the Psalter. With a retrospective distance of 1600 years, his influence on Western thought, political structures, religious institutions, and selfhood seems obviously the work of a giant. However, this god-like figure did not burst forth full-grown. His prodigious creativity was both constrained and aided by a rich complex of theological and philosophical traditions. En route to the Confessions charts the development of Augustine s various understandings of the human person by tracing his phased interactions with particular intellectual traditions and issues from his conversion until his composition of the Confessions. The correlated alterations to Augustine s use of spiritual exercises for human development at each stage are also explored. Augustine s anthropological thinking emerges therein as a series of strikingly fruitful yet thoroughly human syntheses of ancient philosophic and Christian thought. Augustine s philosophical resources and strategical alliances turn out to be much broader than most scholarly accounts have acknowledged. In particular, Augustine made much more extensive use of Roman Stoic conceptualities and argumentative strategies in constructing his philosophical anthropology than heretofore considered. The strangeness of his poetry triggers a critical contemporary assessment and a proposal for better understanding through the theory of Cultural Memory; there follow case studies of the panegyrics and of poems within the letters, and examinations of his intertextuality with Horace and Claudian. Like the emperor, the essays in this volume look in both directions. Its pages are populated by very diverse figures: Plutach, Aelius Aristides, Alexander of Abonouteichos, Daniel the Stylite, Gregory of Nazianzus, Shenoute of Atripe, Mani, Muhammad, and a host of anonymous Greek and Roman priests, prophets, and diviners. The priests of second temple Judaism are considered too. Both in the Greco-Roman and the early Christian worlds the neat division between priests and prophets proves hard to sustain. But in terms of fame and influence a strong contrast emerges between Greco-Roman and Judeo-Christian prophets; this is why it is only among Jews and Christians that false prophets are feared. Two recurrent preoccupations are the relation of priests and prophets to secular power, and the priest/prophet not as reality but as idea, an imagined figure. In this homily, which is part of his previously published MäÒÌafä B rhan Book of Light, he addresses in detail the ritual of Christian baptism and the requirement of religious instruction for the baptized faithful as well as the would-be baptized catechumens. The ritual for adults is discussed and defined with thoroughness and clarity not found in any other source. Significantly, the text suggests that there was at that time a large number of non-christians who converted to Orthodox Christianity, either of their own free will or due to pressure from Christian rulers, including the Emperor. As always, Zär a Ya' qob uses his authority to enforce religious instruction as he details it. Moreover, it offers new opportunities to theology to engage in the process of recontextualization in the contemporary context, taking into account its sensibility to historicity, contingency and particularity. It allows us, for example, to think resurrection anew, and to constructively criticize our forgetfulness of dangerous memories. It is not by overcoming these features of the contemporary age that theology will succeed in its striving after theological truth, but by discerning how such truth is revealed precisely within, and thanks to, particular and contingent histories, and not in spite of historicity, contingency and particularity. When this is done, the dialogue between theology and history/historical studies contributes to a contemporary reconsideration of the radical dialogical character of revelation, that is, of the way in which God reveals Godself in history. This work, which analyses an episode in the evolution of the concept of spiritual substance in early modernity, looks at More s rational theology within the context of the great seventeenth century Cartesian controversies over spirit, soul-body interaction, and divine omnipresence. This work argues that More s new, univocal spirit conception, highly influential upon Newton and Clarke, contributed unwittingly to a slow secularisation process internal to theistic culture. It thus fills a lacuna in scholarship by examining how conceptual changes in early modern metaphysics, as opposed to better researched transformations in moral philosophy, were an additional ingredient in the origins of modern speculative atheism. Paul the Deacon was undoubtedly one of the most prolific and gifted scholars of the early medieval period. Working for different patrons, first in his native Lombardy and then at the Frankish court, he left an impressive literary legacy, including a six-volume History of Rome and a History of the Lombards. All in all, Paul wrote more history than any of his contemporaries. He composed the Liber de episcopis Mettensibus around 784 at the behest of Angilram, bishop of Metz and chief counselor of Charlemagne. The text has received considerable attention from modern historians since it contains the first genealogy of the Carolingian family, one that establishes Arnulf, the seventh-century bishop of Metz, as Charlemagne s forefather. However, rather than being a simple work of royal propaganda, composed to support and legitimize the Carolingians, who had usurped the throne only thirty years earlier with Pippin III s coup in 751, the text subtly advances the prominent role of Metz within the Frankish kingdom. The present volume offers a new Latin edition of the Liber, including the late tenth-century interpolated section that both transformed the text and ensured its transmission. It also provides its first translation into a modern language. The introduction analyzes the textual strategies and the political claims at play in the Liber within the context of a reassessment of Angilram s episcopacy ( ) in Metz. At the heart of this hermeneutical enterprise is Thomas s construal of the relationship between intellect and will, a relationship that can be described as one of dynamic reciprocity. A dynamic interaction between intellect and will obtains in both their natural and graced operations. Hence, the title of this book, The Hermeneutics of Knowing and Willing in the Thought of St. Thomas Aquinas. Some might be concerned that the notion of hermeneutics will import the spectre of relativism into Thomas s thought. By guiding the reader through Thomas s doctrine of man as made to the image of the Trinity, his Trinitarian theology, his Christology, and his treatment of grace, the theological virtues of faith and charity, and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, the author shows how Thomas in fact offers us resources for a theological hermeneutics of objectivity. The criteria for this objectivity, so the author argues, are Trinitarian, Christological, Pneumatological, ecclesial, and Scriptural. It is to be hoped that this book will be read not only by those who have a particular interest in Thomas s theology but also by theologians outside of the Thomistic tradition, particularly those interested in hermeneutics. Mais un certain nombre de travaux du présent volume, montre que les choses ne sont pas si tranchées. Certes, Nicolas de Cues ignorait pas mal de choses sur l islam et les documents qu il utilise l induisent dans un certain nombre de cas en erreur. Mais, par de là la lettre, il ressort qu il a remarquablement compris l esprit coranique et que ces textes méritent à cet égard plus d attention qu ils n en ont généralement reçue. Le présent recueil permet de se faire une idée plus précise de la cohérence de la position de Nicolas de Cues sur le dialogue entre christianisme et islam et des liens entre les thèses de la Cribatio Alkorani et la pensée globale du grand cardinal. J.-C.) est étudiée selon une approche énergétique qui permet de déterminer le temps nécessaire à la construction d un édifice. Le nombre total d heures de travail dévolues à l accomplissement des différentes tâches sur le chantier, depuis l acquisition des matériaux jusqu à leur mise en place, est estimé. L approche permet d appréhender les comportements des bâtisseurs tels qu ils se révèlent dans le choix et l utilisation de matériaux distincts ou dans les travaux d aménagement du terrain préalables à l érection du bâtiment. Les résultats de l application de l approche énergétique à une sélection d édifices illustrent la participation des habitants à la construction de leur propre maison, à la différence de la main-d œuvre abondante et en partie spécialisée impliquée dans la construction de bâtiments aux traits architecturaux élaborés. La diversité des résultats obtenus suggère l accès ouvert à la main-d œuvre spécialisée, à laquelle l élite néopalatiale disposait d un accès certes privilégié, mais non pas exclusif. Erwünscht waren einerseits Beiträge zu beispielhaft erhaltenen historischen Wasserleitungen, die heute zumindest teilweise noch in Betrieb sind und zur Wasserversorgung verwendet werden und andererseits Fallbeispiele historischer Wasserleitungen, die unter Einbeziehung kultur-touristischer Aspekte besonders gut präsentiert sind oder es wert wären, besonders gut präsentiert zu werden. Die 22 Vorträge der Tagung liegen in diesem Band vor. Ausgehend von den historischen Wasserleitungen in Wien von der Römerzeit bis zur zweiten Hochquellen-wasserleitung spannt sich der Bogen der Beiträge topographisch von Usbekistan, über Syrien, Türkei, Österreich, Deutschland, Italien, Spanien und Portugal bis nach Südamerika und zeitlich von den Hethitern über die Römer bis ins 20. Jahrhundert. Dabei wurden die Aquädukte des Römischen Reiches gleichermaßen behandelt wie die Wasserleitungen des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit. Drei Beiträge befassen sich mit Wassertürmen als Teil von Wasserleitungen, weitere Beiträge gibt es zu mit einem Nymphäum, zu Mühlen und zur Wasserversorgung privater Nutzer. Und jeder Beitrag geht in irgendeiner Form mehr oder weniger auf den Zustand der Wasserleitungen und deren Erhaltungswürdigkeit ein, auch wenn es nicht immer einfach ist diese Bauwerke tatsächlich zu erhalten, weil sie großteils nicht mehr in Betrieb sind. Le mûrier a donné naissance à la soie par sa feuille, nourriture essentielle du ver à soie. Grâce à cette place incontournable dans la sériciculture, le mûrier s est profondément incorporé dans la vie sociale et culturelle chinoise. Il a été progressivement façonné comme sujet rituel, mythologique et légendaire, aux fonctions et statuts divers: arbre ancestral, arbre sacré, arbre solaire, arbre de souveraineté, arbre exorciste, arbre d immortalité. Autant d images qui ont tissé un «Tout» montrant l intégration d un arbre dans le système social et culturel chinois, en constante évolution depuis les premiers pouvoirs centralisés jusqu à la période d unification politique et idéologique de la Chine, que constitue la dynastie des Han.
