3 Mediterranean for a big sea of Friendship and Solidarity Un pensiero gentile prende il cuore dei Lions di tanti Paesi che si ritrovano a Pescara: L amicizia al servizio dell uomo!. La Conferenza del Mediterraneo porta tante donne e uomini buoni a navigare insieme, nel grande mare, come Ulisse, con mano ferma al timone e sguardo alle stelle, per raggiungere la loro Itaca della solidarietà. Il Mare Nostrum, per oltre duemila anni, è stato il cuore pulsante della civiltà. ll Mediterraneo, da mare chiuso, si è progressivamente aperto al mondo, prima ad occidente, verso le Americhe, quindi a sud con l apertura del canale di Suez; così tutto è cambiato completamente, perché doveva cambiare. Ancora oggi il Mediterraneo rimane crocevia di religioni, culture, lingue, popoli. A navigarlo non sono più pellegrini, missionari, crociati, pirati, condottieri. Il Mediterraneo, che ha visto, in tanti secoli, sorgere e tramontare imperi e consumare feroci battaglie, resta sempre un grande bacino di civiltà dell intero pianeta. I Lions offrono un esempio internazionale, indistintamente di servizio, di pacifica, amichevole convivenza, con tutti i popoli. A sweet thought in the heart of the Lions coming from many Countries and who will meet in Pescara: Friendship at the service of man!. The Mediterranean Conference brings together good men and women who are sailing the great Sea, like Ulysses, with their hand on the rudder, looking at the stars, to reach their Ithaca of solidarity. The Mare Nostrum has been for over two thousand years the beating heart of civilization. The closed Mediterranean Sea opened itself slowly, first westwards to America, and then southwards with the opening of the Suez Canal; in this way everything changed completely, because it had to change. The Mediterranean Sea is still today an intersection of religions, cultures, languages and people. But it is no more sailed by pilgrims, missionaries, crusaders, pirates and commanders. The Mediterranean basin, which saw empires rise and fall and which was the witness of cruel battles, still remains a great basin of civilizations of the whole planet. The Lions offer an International example of a peaceful and friendly common life with all the people. La Conférence de Méditerranée amène beaucoup de braves hommes et femmes à naviguer ensemble, dans la grande mer, comme Ulysse, avec leur main ferme sur le gouvernail et leur regard fixe aux étoiles, pour arriver à leur Ithaque de la solidarité. Mare Nostrum a été, pendant plus de deux mille ans, le cœur palpitant de la civilisation. La Mer Méditerranée s est petit à petit ouverte au monde, d abord vers l occident aux Amériques et ensuite vers le sud avec l ouverture du Canal de Suez; ainsi tout a entièrement changé, car cela devait changer. ncore aujourd hui la Mer Méditerranée est un carrefour de religions, cultures, langues, peuples. Mais ce ne sont plus les pèlerins, les missionnaires, les croisés et les pirates qui y naviguent. La Mer Méditerranée, qui a vu pendant des siècles les empires naître et mourir et qui a été témion de batailles cruelles, reste toujours un grand bassin de civilations de tout le planète. It is an honour for me to welcome the Mediterranean Lions Conference which chose Abruzzo, especially Pescara, for the headquarter of its 18th session. I m sure that the participants will enjoy the warmth and hospitality, the landscapes, the natural and architectural beauties, the wine and food specialities that our region offers. The subject chosen The development for peace in the Mediterranean is extremely topical and I m sure that the Lions Clubs International will be able to give a significant contribution to increase the stability in this area. 6 Greeting by Organizer of Pescara Conference La rilevanza internazionale della Conferenza del Mediterraneo ci impone di cercare le ragioni che hanno indotto l organizzazione lionistica a vedere nell area del Mediterraneo un luogo di interesse così particolare da dedicarvi prima la Conferenza dei Lions del Mediterraneo e successivamente, come nato da una sua costola, l Osservatorio della Solidarietà Mediterranea. Il carattere internazionale non è solo un dato meramente formale; la partecipazione del Presidente Internazionale e delle più alte cariche lionistiche comporta la possibilità di scambiare esperienze e We can think no better way to stress the outstanding value and the international relevance of the Mediterranean See than pointing out how both the Mediterranean Conference and now the Observatory of the Mediterranean Solidarity itself have been organized in this strategic area, that links three Continents. In occasione della Conferenza il lionismo si bagna nel Mediterraneo così come il Mediterraneo si veste dei colori del lionismo, colori che sono i valori e i principi del lionismo stesso. questa l ispirazione di chi ha visto nell area mediterranea, nella pluralità delle culture che sono qui presenti, nelle contraddizioni e tensioni che vi si agitano, ma anche nelle affascinanti prospettive per il futuro, un vero e proprio unicum che merita una particolare attenzione da parte del lionismo, al di là di ogni confine. On the occasion of the Conference we will have a prodigious event: Lionism will blend into the Mediterranean See and Our Great See will get the wonderful colours of Lions, made of everlasting values and principles, giving birth to an unicum, that is a real unique event. This peculiar unicum, based on the plurality of ancient cultures, on the actual contradictions and tensions, on the peculiarity of the geographic position, as well as on the amazing and challenging perspectives, is really remarkable and deserves the greatest attention by the whole Lion world, beyond any border. Méditerranée et de même le Mare Nostrum vêtira les couleurs qui représentent les valeurs et les principes du lionisme, en faisant ainsi naître un unicum qui est un événement unique. Cet unicum particulier se base non seulement sur la pluralité des cultures et sur les contradictions et les tensions qui y règnent, mais aussi sur les perspectives intéressantes pour le futur et pour cela il mérite la plus grande attention de tout le monde Lions, au delà de toute frontière. 8 The history of Mediterranean Conference The Conference s history begins in 1986 when Taormina s LC organizes a Convention on the topic The Mediterranean, a sea to be saved and invites diplomats, experts and Lions coming from the countries facing the Mare Nostrum. Then a series of two-yearly meetings with an increasing number of participants. During the 1995 Convention important decisions are made: the Conference s seat becomes itinerant and a Mediterranean Solidarity Observatory L histoire de la Conférence débute en 1986 quand le LC de Taormina organise une Congrès sur le thème Méditerranée, une mer à sauver et invite diplomates, experts et Lions provenant des pays du Mare Nostrum. Des réunions biennales suivent avec une participation de plus en plus importante. Durant le Congrès en 1995 des décisions importantes sont prises: rendre le siège de la Conférence itinérant et faire naître un Observatoire de la Solidarité Méditerranéenne de façon à impliquer tous les Lions de la zone. 9 From the Conference to the Mediterranean Solidarity Observatory Lo spirito che aveva dato avvio alle Conferenze del Mediterraneo si è rinforzato nel 1998 con la nascita dell Osservatorio della Solidarietà Mediterranea, un organismo che è costituito da quasi tutti i Multidistretti, Distretti singoli, aree undistricted del Mediterraneo. Disponiamo così di un istituzione che rinforza le Conferenze e ne regola le cadenze. Nel suo Regolamento, oltre alle norme organizzative interne, troviamo gli obiettivi da perseguire nell area mediterranea: promozione del lionismo, conoscenza delle culture come espressione di una storia comune, flussi informativi ed iniziative comuni, gemellaggi e scambi giovanili, difesa dell ambiente, partenariato con Università e borse di studio, affiancare il Comitato Organizzatore. Frutto di questo impegno è stato l inserimento della Conferenza nel calendario ufficiale di Oak Brook e la partecipazione dei Presidenti Internazionali. In 1998 the spirit which inspired the Mediterranean Conferences became stronger through the birth of the Observatory of the Mediterranean Solidarity, an organization made of nearly all the Multiple Districts. The result of such a commitment was the introduction of the Conference in the Oak Brook official calendar and the participation of the International Presidents. Nous disposons ainsi d une institution qui renforce les Conférences et en determine la programmation. La vocazione mercantile, coraggiosa e geniale, ha trasformato quel grazioso paese nel centro piu importante d Abruzzo e in una metropoli del Medio Adriatico. Insediamenti industriali e commerciali, un moderno aeroporto, efficienti approdi pescherecci e turistici connotano la dinamicita di Pescara, luogo privilegiato di un angolo del grande Mediterraneo che fu la romana Ostia Aterni, sito di partenza della via del sale. Oggi, luogo di partenze e ritorni continui, simboleggiati nella vocazione marinara dalla Nave scolpita da un altro suo grande figlio: Pietro Cascella. The mercantile vocation, so ingenious and brilliant, changed this lovely hamlet in the most important centre in Abruzzo, a metropolis of the Middle Adriatic. The industrial and commercial settings, the modern airport, the harbour and the tourists witness the dynamism of Pescara. It is the privileged place of a corner of the Mediterranean basin which was the Roman Ostia Aterni, the departure place of the salt route. It is today the place of departures and returns which are symbolized in the sculpture La Nave (the Ship) made by one of its most important son: Pietro Cascella. Un peu plus d un siècle s est écoulé depuis lors, quand Pescara n était pas encore une ville mais un modeste village. La vocation commerciale, courageuse et géniale, a transformé ce gracieux village en le centre plus important des Abruzzes et en une métropole du Centre de l Adriatique. Les implantations industrielles et commerciales, l aéroport moderne, le port ainsi que les touristes préfèrent le dynamisme de Pescara, le lieu privilégié d un coin de la grande Mer Méditerranée que fut la romaine Ostia Aterni, la localité de départ de la route du sel. Aujourd hui elle est le iieu de nombreux départs et retours qui sont symbolisés dans sa vocation maritime par La Nave (le Bateau) sculptée par un de ses grands fils: Pietro Cascella.
