4 GB FOREWORD When designing the logo for the World Dog Show to coincide with Expo Milano 2015 we wished to combine a series of elements characterizing above all its Italianism, so rightly publicized and nominated to coincide with the 150th year of Italian unity. However the dog is retained as central element with its figure characterized by a style associated with Italian culture and art. Hence after discarding all the common positions that characterize, for better or worse, Italianism in the world, we directed our research towards the artistic environment. Luckily for us the scene appearing before us is rich in ideas and opportunities so we can pick and choose when wishing to provide the logo with one type of connotation rather than another. Also our attention has been strongly attracted by another important event which saw in 2009 the 100th anniversary of the birth of Italian Futurist art. This solution appeared at once to us a very good starting point to give a definite and recognizable character to the logo which we were looking for. The futurism movement was certainly an important period for contemporary Italian art which found in Milan a place for inspiration, ideas and passage for several highly prestigious exponents such as Umberto Bocconi, Filippo Marinetti, Giacomo Balla and many others. This combination of dog and futurism has also stirred up memories in us which has shown us, as already in the past, this union has worked and still works with the creation and adoption of one of the most important post-war Italian companies, i.e. ENI and the 6-legged dog designed by Luigi Broggini with whom we also share the province of origin (Varese). FR INTRODUCTION Pour la conception du logo de l Exposition Canine Mondiale qui coïncidera avec l Expo 2015 Milan, après le 150 ème anniversaire de l Unité d Italie qui a eu lieu cette année, nous voulions réunir une série d éléments typiquement italiens tout en maintenant le chien comme élément central du logo, repris dans un style associable à la culture et à l art italiens. Donc après avoir mis de côté tous les lieux communs qui, dans le bien et dans le mal, caractérisent l Italie dans le monde, nous avons dirigé nos recherches vers le domaine artistique. Bienheureusement, cette perspective nous a offert une multitude d idées et de trouvailles, et nous n avions donc que l embarras du choix pour donner au logo un type de connotation plutôt qu un autre. Ensuite, notre attention a été fortement attirée par un autre événement important : le centième anniversaire de la naissance de l art Futuriste Italien, en Cette idée nous a tout de suite semblé excellente pour donner un caractère fort et reconnaissable au logo que nous voulions réaliser : le mouvement Futuriste a certainement été une période importante pour l art contemporain italien, avec la ville de Milan qui a servi de lieu d inspiration et de passage pour de nombreux artistes de grande valeur comme Umberto Boccioni, Filippo Marinetti, Giacomo Balla, et beaucoup d autres. Cette association chien et futurisme a également suscité en nous des souvenirs qui nous rappellent comment, déjà dans le passé, cette union a fonctionné et fonctionne toujours, avec l exemple de l une des plus importantes entreprises italiennes de l après-guerre : l Eni et son chien à six pattes dessiné par Luigi Broggini, avec lequel nous avons d ailleurs en commun la province d origine (Varese). 4

5 INTRODUZIONE Nel progettare il logo per l Esposizione Mondiale Canina che coinciderà con l Expo Milano 2015 volevamo unire una serie di elementi che ne caratterizzassero soprattutto l italianità, tanto giustamente pubblicizzata e nominata in occasione del 150 anno dell unità d Italia, mantenendo però l elemento centrale del logo il cane e la sua figura caratterizata da uno stile ricollegabile alla cultura e all arte italiana. Eliminati quindi tutti i luoghi comuni che caratterizzano, nel bene e nel male, l italianità nel mondo, abbiamo dirottato la nostra ricerca nell ambito artistico. Qui lo spettro che si apre fortunatamente è ricco di idee e di spunti e quindi c era solo l imbarazzo della scelta nel voler dare al logo un tipo di connotazione piuttosto che un altro. Poi la nostra attenzione è stata fortemente attratta da un altro evento importante che ha visto nel 2009 il centesimo anno di nascita dell arte Futurista Italiana. Questa soluzione c è sembrata subito un ottimo spunto per dare un carattere deciso e riconoscibile al logo che stavamo cercando, il movimento Futurista è stato certamente un importante periodo per l arte contemporanea italiana che ha visto nella città di Milano un luogo di ispirazione, spunto e passaggio per molti esponenti di alto valore quali Umberto Boccioni, Filippo Marinetti, Giacomo Balla, e molti altri. Questo abbinamento cane con fututismo ha inoltre suscitato in noi anche ricordi che ci dimostrano come già nel passato questo connubio ha funzionato e funziona tuttora, con l ideazione e l adozione di una delle più importanti aziende italiane del dopoguerra, ovvero l Eni e il cane a sei zampe disegnato da Luigi Broggini, del quale, tra l altro, condividiamo anche la provincia d origine (Varese). 5

6 GB DEVELOPMENT When developing the logo we applied rules and criteria characterizing the distinctive traits of Futurism, i.e. movement of the figures represented often obtained by intersection of lines and curves. This styling also favoured another aspect which we wished to stress. i.e. not to single out a specific dog breed being illustrated, rather the absolute simplification of the figure itself. The silhouette, designed and retouched several times, has thus grown into a generic dog, without face, in a slender pose as if it were about to start walking, facing ahead, towards the future but with the tail which, like an arrow, points towards the past: a simple and essential figure just as would be drawn by a child. FR DÉVELOPPEMENT Pour le développement du logo, nous voulions donc reprendre les règles et les canons qui caractérisent les traits distinctifs du Futurisme, c est-à-dire le mouvement des figures représentées, que l on obtenait souvent par l intersection de lignes et de courbes. Cette stylisation nous était utile également pour un autre aspect que nous souhaitions souligner, c est-à-dire la non-représentation d une unique race de chien, mais la simplification absolue de la figure dessinée. La silhouette dessinée et plusieurs fois retouchée est donc la représentation d un chien non défini, sans visage, dans une pose élancée comme s il était sur le point de commencer à marcher, tourné vers l avant, vers l avenir, et avec la queue qui, comme une flèche, pointe en direction du passé. Une figure simple et essentielle, telle que la dessinerait un enfant. 6

7 SVILUPPO Per lo sviluppo del logo quindi ci volevamo rifare alle regole e ai canoni che caratterizzano i tratti distintivi del Futurismo, ovvero il movimento delle figure rappresentate che veniva ottenuto, spesso, con l intersezione di righe e curve. Questa stilizzazione tra l altro, ci favoriva anche un altro aspetto che volevamo sottolineare, ovvero la non individuazione di una specifica razza di cane rappresentata, ma la semplificazione assoluta della figura stessa. La silouette diseganta e più volte ritoccata si rifà quindi ad un cane generico, un cane senza volto, in una posa slanciata come se stesse per cominciare a camminare, rivolto in avanti, vero il futuro ma con la coda che, come una freccia punta in direzione del passato. Una figura semplice ed essenziale, proprio come lo disegnerebbe un bambino. 7

8 GB CONSTRUCTION So again basing ourselves on the Futurism style we reconstructed the logo by intersecting just one series of circles in such a way that their intersection created the silhouette of our dog. We then used these circles to simulate the muscles and bone structure of the dog by playing on colours and crossing points often used by futuristic masters who, through these, wished to give a feeling of movement also to figures inevitably static as they are fixed in their paintings. FR CONSTRUCTION Prenant comme exemple le style du Futurisme, nous avons reconstruit le logo en croisant simplement une série de cercles de façon à ce que leur intersection crée la silhouette de notre chien. Ces cercles nous serviront ensuite pour simuler également la musculature et l ossature du chien, en créant des jeux de couleurs et des croisements souvent utilisés par les maîtres du futurisme qui les utilisaient pour donner l impression du mouvement à leurs figures inévitablement statiques, fixées sur leurs tableaux. 8

9 COSTRUZIONE Rifacendoci quindi allo stile del Futurismo abbiamo ricostruito il logo incrociando solo una serie di cerchi in modo che la loro intersezione creasse la silouette del nostro cane. Questi cerchi po ci serviranno per simulare anche la muscolatura e l ossatura del cane, creando giochi di colori e incroci spesso utilizzati dai maestri del futurismo che con questi volevano dare la sensazione del movimento anche a figure inevitabilmente statiche, in quanto fissate sui loro quadri. 9

10 GB GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION 1 As pointed out at the beginning of this report we wished to give a geographical location to the event to be held in Milan (Italy) however without forgetting the importance and consideration attached to it at world level. For this purpose we thought of placing our dog inside a sphere which could be returned, by shape and colours, to the earthly globe. So with our lines plotted inside we can draw the meridians and parallels that we are used to seeing represented and traced on the globe so that these lines could also create the impression of movements typical of seas, clouds and winds which flow or are left to be transported by the terrestrial rotation. FR SITUATION GÉOGRAPHIQUE 1 Comme nous le soulignons au début de cette présentation, nous voulions situer géographiquement l événement qui aura lieu à Milan, en Italie, mais sans oublier l importance et le relief de l événement au niveau mondial. Dans ce but, nous avons pensé de situer notre chien à l intérieur d une sphère qui rappelle, par ses formes et par ses couleurs, le globe terrestre. De façon à ce que nos lignes qui le traversent puissent rappeler les méridiens et les parallèles que nous sommes habitués à voir représentés et tracés sur les cartes, tout en faisant en sorte que ces lignes rendent également la sensation des mouvements typiques des océans, des nuages et des vents qui fluctuent et se laissent porter par la rotation terrestre. 10

11 COLLOCAZIONE GEOGRAFICA 1 Come sottolineato all inizio di questa relazione volevamo collocare geograficamente l evento che si terrà a Milano, in italia, senza però dimenticarci del rilievo e della taratura a livello Mondiale che esso riveste. A tale scopo abbiamo pensato di collocare il nostro cane all interno di una sfera che fosse riconducibile, per forma e per colori, al globo terrestre. Così che le nostre linee che vi corrono all interno possano richiamare i meridiani e i paralleli che siamo abituati a vedere rappresentati e tracciati sui mappamondi, facendo si che queste linee possano anche rendere la sensazione dei movimenti tipici dei mari, delle nuvole e dei venti che fluttuano e si lasciano trasportare dalla rotazione terrestre. 11

12 GB GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION 2 It is interesting to note how in this logo the guidelines laid down by us appear evident, distinct and at the same time uniform, i.e. the massive presence of the dog s silhouette, the obvious central character. And how this event may clearly be related and conveyed to the place where it is to take place, i.e. Italy which, however, is part of Europe and the world, therefore the blue segments making up semi-globe seem to recall the seas and oceans characterizing the earth viewed from space and the parts making up the dog s silhouette seem to be the lands which emerged to form the continents, so much so that the dog s front legs could, owing to their position, represent the Italian peninsula and the Peloponnese while the hind legs represent France and the Iberian peninsula so as to emphasize yet again the belonging of Italy to the European Union. FR SITUATION GÉOGRAPHIQUE 2 Il est intéressant de remarquer comment dans ce logo apparaissent évidentes, distinctes et en temps même homogènes les lignes directrices que nous nous étions fixées, c est- à-dire la présence massive de la silhouette du chien, protagoniste indiscutable de l événement, et comment cet événement est clairement relié et rapportable au lieu dans lequel il se déroulera, c est-à-dire l Italie, qui cependant fait partie de l Europe et du monde. Donc les quartiers bleus qui composent notre demi-globe semblent rappeler les mers et les océans qui caractérisent la terre vue de l espace, et les parties qui composent la silhouette du chien semblent être les terres émergées qui composent les continents, de sorte que le pattes avant du chien pourraient représenter par leur position la péninsule italienne et le Péloponnèse tandis que les pattes arrières seraient la France et la péninsule Ibérique, soulignant ainsi l appartenance de l Italie à l Union Européenne. 12

13 COLLOCAZIONE GEOGRAFICA 2 E interessante notare come in questo logo compaiano evidenti, distinte e al tempo stesso omogenee le linee guida che ci eravamo prefissati, ovvero la presenza massiccia della silouette del cane, protagonista indiscusso dell evento, e come questo evento sia chiaramente collegabile e riconducibile al luogo in cui si svolgerà, ovvero litalia, che però fa parte dell Europa e del mondo, quindi gli spicchi azzurri che compongono il nostro semi-globo sembrano richiamare i mari e gli oceani che caratterizzano la terra vista dallo spazio, e le parti che compongono la silouette del cane sembrano essere le terr emerse che compongono i continenti, tanto che le zampe anteriori del cane potrebbero rappresentare per la loro posizione la penisola Italiana e il peloponneso mentre le zampe posteriori la Francia e la penisola Iberica, a sottolineare ancora l appartenenza dell Italia all unione Europea. 13

14 GB THE FINAL RETOUCHES By now our logo is well defined with our research and initial wish respected. In fact we wanted a logo strongly connected to the Bel Paese and the art which is felt in Italy more than in any other country. We wished to combine the dog lovers world with the world of art because only by observing a dog it is possible to understand how much these animals know how to be elegant and well balanced in their posture and their beauty regardless of any of the breeds or types. FR DERNIÈRES RETOUCHES Le logo est désormais bien défini et notre recherche et volonté initiale respectée. Nous voulions un logo fort, rapportable au «Bel Paese» et à l art qui caractérise l Italie plus que tout autre État. Nous voulions associer le monde de la cynophilie au monde de l art car ce n est qu en observant un chien que l on peut comprendre combien ces animaux savent être élégants et équilibrés dans leur posture et dans leur beauté, quelle que soit leur race ou leur typologie. 14

15 ULTIMI RITOCCHI Il logo ormai è ben definito e la nostra ricerca e volontà iniziale rispettata. Volevamo un logo fortemente riconducibile al Bel Paese e all arte che si respira in Italia più che in ogni altro stato. Volevamo abbinare il mondo della cinofilia al mondo dell arte perchè solo osservando una cane si può capire quanto questi animali sappiano essere eleganti ed equilibrati nella loro postura e nella loro bellezza di qualsiasi razza o tipologia essi siano. 16 GB THE FUTURIST LOGO Finally for greater heightening and emphasizing the clear references to futurism we have added shading to the logo so as to make the personality and artistry stand out even further. W think that we can safely say that the result is a good compromise between art and communication, whether in the version with sphere or in the cleaner version without sphere. FR LE LOGO FUTURISTE Pour mettre en évidence et souligner ultérieurement les évidentes références au futurisme, nous avons enfin inséré dans le logo des nuances qui en exaltent ultérieurement la personnalité et le caractère artistique. Nous pensons pouvoir affirmer que le résultat est un bon compromis entre l art et la communication, aussi bien dans la version avec sphère que dans la version plus nettoyée sans sphère. 16

17 IL LOGO FUTURISTA Per evidenziare e sottolineare ulteriormente i chiari riferimenti al futurismo abbiamo poi infine inserito nel logo delle sfumature che ne risaltano ulteriormente la personaità e l artisticità. Il risultato, crediamo di poter affermare, sia un buon compromesso tra arte e comunicazione, sia nella versione con sfera che nella versione più pulita senza sfera.
