2 The Knit & Weave Loom Kit can be assembled in multiple ways to create many knitted and woven projects. For more variety, try yarn in different weights, colors, and gauges. Use the instructions in your pattern to assemble loom for a specific project. 1 With peg holes facing up, join three of the frame segments together so they form a U shape. 2 Assemble the other half of the loom, then join the two halves together to form a rectangle. 3 Insert pegs into the tab sections to secure the pieces of the loom. CHOOSING THE PEGS Which pegs you use will depend on the type of project you make. For projects requiring a tighter stitch with thinner yarns such as worsted weight and sport weight, insert a small peg in every hole. This configuration can be used for both knitting and weaving. For wider stitches with thicker yarns, insert a large peg in every other hole. This configuration is suitable for knitting only. Use a contrast color peg to mark the beginning of a row, or where special stitches are required. SINGLE KNITTING Learn the basics for single knitting and you ll open the door to just about any knitting project. Use a circle or small square loom to practice. (You will only use one side if working on a square loom.) Mark the beginning of the loom with a contrast color peg; insert it at the bottom right corner on a square loom or anywhere on a circle loom. Leaving a yarn tail about 6in (15cm) long, make a cursive e shape from 3 4 the yarn. Pull the bottom of the e back through the eye to create a loop and pull the knot closed. SINGLE KNITTING (cont.) yarn (the yarn that is attached to the ball) to the inside of the loom. 2 Wrap the yarn counter-clockwise around the next peg to the left so the working yarn is back to the inside of the loom again. 3 Repeat so there are two loops on the peg, one above the other. 4 Using the knitting tool, bring the lower loop up and over both the upper loop and the peg to the inside of the loom, leaving one loop on the peg. Continue wrapping pegs and hooking one loop over the other on each peg once around on a circle loom, or once across on a technique: Knit Stitch square loom. For the second row, continue to wrap in the same direction on a circle loom, or back across the previous stitches on a square loom. NOTE: On a circle loom, knitting is worked around the loom in a clockwise direction (knitting in the round) from the first peg to the last: 1 complete circle = 1 round. On a flat loom, knitting is worked back and forth: from the first peg to last peg across one side of the loom = 1 row. Pulling loops taut creates a tighter stitch. Leaving loops slack creates a looser stitch. Check stitches occasionally to make sure they are the same size &10 In one motion, turn the knitting tool into the groove on the peg, catching the working yarn and pull yarn through the loop. 11 Pull up on the loop you just made until the original loop slips off the peg and to the inside of the loom. 12 Put the loop you just made (the new loop) onto the peg. Tug working yarn to tighten the loop on the peg. NOTE: Marled and tweedy yarns add texture and depth. Now you ll create your first row of stitches. Practice knit stitches before moving on to purl stitches. 5 6 technique: Purl Stitch 5 Once you ve cast on, draw the working yarn across and above the front of the first loop. 6 Using the knitting tool, pull the loop over the working yarn and behind the peg. Give the yarn on the peg enough slack for the next row of stitches, then continue until you complete the round (circle loom) or row (square loom). For the next row, continue in the round if on a circle loom, or back across the previous stitches starting with the last stitch if on a square loom. Think of a purl stitch as the opposite of a knit stitch. You can alternate between knit and purl stitches to create different patterns. Color Change Switch yarn colors to create stripes and other interesting effects. technique: Flat Piece 13 technique: In the Round 13 Before knitting the last stitch of the row with the old color, cut the yarn leaving a 6in (15cm) tail. Knit the last stitch using both yarn colors held together, leaving 2 color loops on this peg. Drop the strand of the old color, and continue knitting using only the new color. When you reach the color change peg again, lift both color loops over the working yarn to create the next loop. NOTE: Weave each yarn tail separately into the knitting of the matching color Draw the working yarn outside of the loom and across the front of the peg below the existing loop. 8 Slide the knitting tool from top to bottom between the existing loop and the peg, and over the working yarn After knitting the last stitch with the old color, cut the yarn leaving a 6in (15cm) yarn tail. For the next stitch, you ll use both the old color and the new color yarns together. Loop the new color onto the peg you just wrapped and hold all 3 yarn strands together. Knit the stitch, leaving 2 color loops (the old color and the new color) on this peg. Drop the strand of the old color, and continue knitting using only the new color. When you reach the color change peg on the next round, lift both color loops over the working yarn to create a new loop. 5 Binding Off Binding Off (cont.) Create a clean finish by knitting off and tucking in the yarn tails. technique: Gathered technique: Flat Piece Knit the first 2 pegs in the row. Pull the loop off the second peg and hook it onto the first peg (2 loops on the first peg). 16 Knit the first peg again. 17 Draw the remaining loop onto the second peg. Knit the next peg in the row. Remove the loop just made from the peg and place it on the previous peg. Knit off the previous peg. Move the remaining loop back one peg to the technique: In the Round left. Continue to bind off across all the pegs until there is one loop left on a peg. On the last peg, wrap the working yarn around the peg and knit off. Cut the yarn leaving a 8in (20cm) tail. 18 Wrap the yarn around the peg again and knit off. Tug on the loop on the peg until the tail of the yarn comes through and the stitch is closed snugly against the knitting. Weave in the tail on the wrong side of the knitting. 22 Cut yarn, leaving a 6in (15cm) tail. Cut a strand of yarn 1 times the perimeter of the loom. (A contrast color yarn is used in the pictures for clarity.) Thread the strand into a yarn needle. Starting with the first peg, slide the needle through the yarn loop on the peg, working your way around the loom, always sliding the needle through from the bottom to the top of each loop, until all loops are threaded. Double Knitting 23 After all the loops have been threaded, go through the first loop again. Gently remove the knitting from the loom. 24 Tug on the 2 ends of the yarn strand to gather the knitting. Before pulling completely closed, turn the knitting inside out, bringing the yarn ends through to the wrong side and continue to pull ends until tightly gathered. Tie the 3 yarn ends together and trim. Add warmth and durability to knit projects with double knitting. As with single knitting, double knit projects begin by casting on. Assemble the loom using both U-shaped pieces and 2 straight pieces. Insert pegs along each side. Use a contrast color peg in one corner and leave the opposite corner empty. technique: Casting On Follow the instructions for binding off a flat piece until there is one loop left on a peg. On the last peg, wrap the working yarn around the peg and knit off. Cut the yarn leaving an 8in (20cm) tail. Remove the last loop from the loom, then thread the tail onto a yarn needle. (Hint: thread the needle by folding the yarn and passing the fold through the eye of the needle.) Slide the needle up through the yarn loop. 20 Pull needle under the first bound-off stitch at the beginning of the edge. 21 Pull the needle down through the loop to finish, then draw the yarn tail to the wrong side of the knitting to weave it in Make a slipknot about 6in (15cm) from the end of the working yarn and loop onto the contrast color peg so the loop is snug but not too tight. 26 Lace yarn in a zigzag manner down the loom, catching every other peg on each side When you reach the last peg pair, bring the yarn horizontally across the loom, and resume the zigzag lacing back up the loom on the alternate pegs. 8 MARTHA STEWART CRAFTS with LION BRAND Knit & Weave Loom Kit Project Instructions 9

6 Double Knitting (cont.) Double Knitting (cont.) technique: Casting On technique: Binding Off Lay a piece of scrap yarn over the crisscrossed yarn and pull ends inside and under the loom. Ends can be tied or left loose and used to pull finished rows through the loom. Lace loom again so the second layer matches the first layer (skipping the contrast peg). technique: Knit Stitch 29 Knit off each peg around the loom, pulling the lower loop up and over the peg and to the inside of the loom. Remove the slipknot from the first peg after you have completed six rows of knitting. 30 Repeat the cast on steps 26 and 27, lacing a new loop on every peg. Knit off, bringing the lower loop over the peg to the inside of the loom to create knit stitches. 32 Starting at the first peg, move the loops from the pegs on one side of the loom to the pegs on the opposite side of the loom. 33 Hold the working yarn across the front of the first 2 pegs. Knit the first peg by pulling both loops on the peg up and over the working yarn, leaving a single loop on the peg. Repeat on the second peg. Lift the loop off the second peg and place it onto the first peg. 34 Knit off the first peg. Finishing the Cast On Edge technique: Binding Off 35 Move the remaining loop from the first peg onto the second peg. Knit the next peg, to the left, pulling the 2 loops on the peg up and over the working yarn to leave a single loop on the peg. Move this single loop back to the previous peg (the peg to the right), and knit off this peg. Move the remaining loop one peg to the left. Continue working off the loops in this way until only one loop is left on a peg. (See page 8, Binding Off Flat Piece) for how to finish the last loop. To give the cast-on edge a look as neat as the bound-off end, follow these steps: 30 technique: Color Change At the end of the row, cut the yarn of the old color leaving a 6in (15cm) tail. Lace the first stitch of the next row with both colors and knit off to secure the yarn tails. Lace the rest of row with the new color only. When you reach the color change peg on the next row, lift both color loops over the top loop. NOTE: Hide yarn tails by laying them in between the pegs (like the scrap yarn from casting on.) Starting at the edge opposite the beginning yarn tail, draw the first two loops onto a crochet hook. Pull the second loop through the first loop. Draw the next loop onto the crochet hook and pull it through the loop already on the hook. 37 Continue in this manner until only one loop remains. Pull the beginning tail through the loop, creating a new loop. Pull the tail all the way through the loop and pull it snug against the knitting. 7 Weaving Use a square or rectangular loom for weaving. Individual woven squares can be sewn together to create larger projects such as blankets or scarves. Skip the corners when placing pegs. Place a contrast color peg in the upper right corner only. technique: Setting Up the Warp Yarn that runs vertically on a loom is called the warp. Weaving (cont.) 43 Moving down one peg on the right side of the loom, slide the weaving tool to the left again, alternating the threads above and below the tool from the last row. Pull more yarn loose from the ball as needed before weaving each row. On the left side of the loom, wrap the working yarn around the next peg and hook it on the weaving tool. Pull the weaving tool through the warp threads to the right side of the loom again. Repeat until all the pegs are wrapped on both sides of the loom. Be sure to keep the warp strands even with the pegs; use the fork end of the weaving tool to push weft strands toward the top of the loom. When the loom is full and the working yarn is at the bottom left corner, cut the yarn leaving a 6in (15cm) tail. At the upper left hand corner of the loom, loop the loose warp and weft yarns together around the corner pegs. NOTE: The tightness of the last few weft threads may make weaving difficult. In this case, use the knitting tool to lift the loop on the peg so that you are able to pull the weft thread underneath it. Removing the Weaving From the Loom Make a slipknot about 6in (15cm) from the end of the yarn and place it on the contrast color peg in the upper right corner. Bring the yarn down to the bottom right corner and wrap it around the first peg on the bottom row. Hold the yarn on the bottom peg and bring the yarn back up to the top of the loom and wrap it around the first peg on the top row. 39 Continue wrapping the loom from top to bottom and bottom to top, moving from right to left. Hold the previous pegs while wrapping to prevent slippage. 40 When all top and bottom pegs have been wrapped, the yarn should be at the top left peg technique: Weaving the Weft Yarn that runs horizontally on a loom is called the weft. (A contrast color yarn is used for illustrative purposes only.) Starting at the corner with the ending weft tail, lift the first two warp loops from the top right with a crochet hook. 45 Pull the second loop through the first loop, leaving one loop on the crochet hook. Repeat through all loops, working around the corner to the second side. At the second corner, lift the slipknot from the corner peg and let it drop (do not knit). Continue to work through all loops to the third corner. 46 At the third corner, pull yarn through the warp loop, making a new loop on the crochet hook. Pull weft loop through the loop on the hook, leaving one loop on the hook. Continue until all loops are off the pegs and one loop remains on crochet hook. NOTE: When finishing the last 2 sides, the woven piece may come off the loom. 47 Thread the tail onto a yarn needle. Insert needle through the loop on the crochet hook, under the first loop at the beginning of the bound-off edge, and down through the loop, creating a chain. (See page 8, steps 19-21) Hide tails by weaving them into the wrong side. 41 Place the ball of yarn on the left side of the loom, pull out a few yards of yarn. Starting in the upper right corner, slide the weaving tool alternately over and under warp threads until the hook is at the left side of the loom. (If your warp is a single strand, weave over and under every 2 strands of yarn. If your warp is doubled, weave over and under every 4 strands of yarn.) 8 Making Rosettes FINISHING THE Center technique: Wrapping the Petals technique: Solid Center Petal rosettes can be sewn together to make afghans, sweaters, and other projects. Assemble the loom using just the corner pieces with a small peg in every hole. Place a contrast color peg in one corner. Each petal rosette takes about 80in (203cm) of yarn each Thread the yarn needle with a 30in (76cm) length of contrast color yarn. Slide the needle up through a loop, then down through the loop directly opposite. Continue in a clockwise direction, pulling yarn strand tight, until there is a yarn strand through the center of each petal loop, ending with the needle on the wrong side of the rosette. Tie the beginning and ending tails together on the wrong side of the rosette technique: Outline Center Make a slipknot about 2in (5cm) from the end of the yarn and place the knot onto the starting peg in the upper right corner. 49 Draw the yarn to the opposite corner and wrap it around the peg. 50 Draw the yarn back up to the beginning corner and wrap it around the starting peg. 51 Draw the yarn to the opposite corner and around the next peg to the right. 52 Draw the yarn around the next peg to the left of the beginning corner. Continue in this manner, wrapping the loom in a counter-clockwise direction until all pegs are wrapped. 53 Loosely tie the yarn around the starting peg and cut it leaving a 2in (5cm) tail. 54 Follow the directions for a Solid Center or Outline Center. Use the knitting tool to remove the flower from the loom when finished. Trim all yarn tails on the wrong side, close to the rosette center Thread the yarn needle with a 20in (51cm) length of contrast color yarn. Leaving a 6in (15cm) tail under the rosette, slide the needle up through one loop, then down through the next loop to the right to make a stitch. Continue in a clockwise direction once around the loom, ending with the needle on the under side of the rosette. Tug both ends of the yarn to tighten the stitches, taking care to keep the petal crossovers in the center of the loom. These stitches can be hidden. Tie yarn tails together. 57 Work a second round of stitches working in the opposite (counter-clockwise) direction from the first peg, sliding the needle up through the first loop and down through the next loop on the peg to the left. These stitches will show. Repeat if desired, working a third row in the same clockwise direction as the first. More than one color of yarn can be used. End with the needle under the flower. 9 PROJECT 1 Woven Baby Blanket level: BEGINNER Materials: Worsted weight yarn oz (50g) ball 98yds per ball Coral Pink 5 balls (A) Pale Orange 5 balls (B) Pink 5 balls (C) Knit & Weave Loom GAUGE:Square = about 13 x 13in. (33 x 33cm) with 2 strands of A for the warp and 2 strands of B for the weft. NOTE: Exact gauge is not essential to this project. LOoM CONfiGURATION: (2) 36-hole pieces (4) 12-hole pieces (4) 6-hole pieces (2) corner pieces Connect pieces to form a large square as follows: 36-hole piece > corner piece > 36-hole piece > corner piece > 12-hole piece > 12-hole piece > 6-hole piece > 6-hole piece > corner piece > 12-hole piece > 12-hole piece > 6-hole piece > 6-hole piece > corner piece. Insert 40 small blue pegs along each side of loom, for a total of 160 pegs. FINISHED SIZE: About 39 x 39in (99 x 99cm) DIRECTIONS 1 NOTE: Follow loom manual instructions on WEAVING for how to set up the warp, weave the weft, and remove weaving from the loom. Sew squares together to make blanket. 10 PROJECT 2 Loom Knit Tweedy Scarf level: BEGINNER PROJECT 3 Loom Knit Tweedy Hat level: BEGINNER Materials: GAUGE: 10.5 stitches 2. The instructions provided in the loom Materials: = about 4in. (10cm) Bulky weight yarn manual for casting on are the same for both Bulky weight yarn Be sure to check flat knitting and knitting in the round (when 5 3oz (85g) ball your gauge. you make a tube). GAUGE: 10.5 stitches = about 4in (10cm) Be sure to check your gauge. NOTE: 1. Hat is knit with one strand of each color yarn held together. 2. The instructions provided in the loom manual for casting on are the same for both flat knitting and knitting in the round (when you make a tube). These instructions are listed under the heading of Single Knitting. 3. Once you ve cast on for the Hat, continue knitting in a clockwise direction around loom for single knitting in the round. 5. Green peg is used to mark the beginning of each round for the Hat. Green and pink pegs are the same size. LOoM CONfiGURATION: (2) 36-hole pieces (2) U-shaped corner pieces. Connect pieces to form a rectangle as follows: 36-hole piece > U-shaped corner piece > 36-hole piece > U-shaped corner piece. Place 1 grey peg in each connecting hole to hold loom together. Place 14 large pink pegs into every other hole and one large green peg at each end along one side while you will knit on only one side of the loom, a rectangle shape will make it easier to hold. LOoM CONfiGURATION: (2) 28-hole semi-circular pieces (4) 12-hole pieces Connect pieces to form an oval as follows: 28-hole semi-circular piece > 12-hole piece > 12-hole piece > 28-hole semi-circular piece > 12-hole piece > 12-hole piece. Insert one large green peg anywhere along loom set-up to mark beginning of round, skip one hole, then insert a large pink peg into the next hole. Continue placing large pink pegs into every other hole around the loom. FINISHED SIZE: Scarf About 6 x 60in (15 x 152cm) FINISHED SIZE: Hat 18 in. (46 cm) circumference, will stretch to fit a range of sizes. DIRECTIONS 1 SINGLE KNITTING for instructions on how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off. With one strand of A and one strand of B held together, cast onto the 16 working pegs. 2 Knit the first row. 3 Purl the next row. Alternate knit and purl rows until piece measures about 60in. (152cm) from beginning to end. 4 Finish by threading yarn end into yarn needle and weave yarn ends into the fabric of the scarf. DIRECTIONS 1 NOTE: Hat is knit in the round. SINGLE KNITTING for instructions on how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off in the gathered method. With one strand of A and one strand of B held together, cast on beginning at the green peg. 2 Knit the first round. 3 Purl the next round. Alternate kint and purl rows until you have completed 50 rounds. 4 Bind off in the gathered method. Pull yarn ends to gather hat closed. Gauge is dependent on the thickness of the yarn used, the size of the pegs, the spacing of the pegs, and how tightly or loosely you knit. With large pegs in every other hole and using bulky yarn, you will get approximately 2 stitches to the inch. With small pegs in every hole and using worsted weight yarn, you will get approximately 4 stitches to the inch. Save time in the long run by knitting a 4in x 4in (10cm x 10cm) swatch to check your gauge before starting a project. Weaving Configurations The Knit & Weave Loom Kit can be customized in various size on shape configurations for weaving. This chart shows the many possibilities.
