Ceci n est pas une liste exhaustive de toutes les recherches en énergie au sein des hautes écoles de la HES-SO. Les nombreux projets en énergie financés par Nano-Tera, EOS Holding, Fondation The Ark, Gebert Rüf Stiftung etc. ainsi que les mandats de recherche cantonaux ne figurent pas dans le présent document. 3

5 GEOTHERMAL TESTING SYSTEM (GTS) Financement : CTI Chèque d innovation Collaboration avec Geoazimut Sàrl à Fribourg ( Date de début : avril durée 2 mois Descriptif du projet Les systèmes de chauffage utilisant l énergie géothermique de basse profondeur (<400m) sont de plus en plus nombreux. Il est donc nécessaire de pouvoir gérer au mieux leur implémentation et de connaître leur potentiel énergétique. Pour évaluer ces paramètres Swissgeotesting Sàrl et Geoazimut Sàrl ont un capteur à disposition qui permet de mesurer la température, la pression (profondeur), l azimut et la pente. Le but de ce projet était de caractériser ce capteur pour une utilisation verticale et de définir les précisions de mesures des différents paramètres. Finalement, un support pour le capteur devait être développé pour pouvoir réaliser des mesures efficaces. Le projet à démontrer que la précision pour les paramètres géométriques du capteur n était actuellement pas suffisante sans calibration pour la mesure des sondes géothermiques. Par contre les mesures de température et de pression sont suffisamment précises. Actuellement des mesures de profils de température sont régulièrement réalisées à l aide du capteur et du support réalisé. 6 APEAS - AUTOMATIC PERSONAL ENERGY ADVICING SYSTEM Funds : CTI Collaboration with : GEROCO SA, ALRO Communication SA, IKAÖ, CSEM Starting date : 2012 duration 1 year Project description Energy saving is important for preserving the environment and for reducing energy bills, but efficient tools to reduce domestic electricity consumption are not easy to find and implement. Systems able to disaggregate the global electricity consumption would greatly help the consumer finding out which equipment should be replaced and/or which behaviour should be modified. The HES-SO Valais-Wallis and its partners are currently working in this direction. A data acquisition system able to measure the three phases of a standard household has been developed and was currently deployed in fifty households for a month. A simulator of the main contributors has also been created. The simulator is a powerful tool to initially test different disaggregation algorithms as it provides an a priori knowledge of the appliances and therefore allows quantitative evaluations of the performances. Qualitative evaluations of different output of the simulator have shown a good match between simulated and real-world measurements. Based on the recorded data and the simulator, different approaches for disaggregation algorithms are currently investigated with encouraging results. 7 DAHLIA, VALVE POUR CIRCUITS DE REFROIDISSEMENT DE VÉHICULES À FAIBLES ÉMISSIONS POLLUANTES Financement : CTI Collaboration avec : Johnson Electric Switzerland AG, Automotive Products Group, CH-3280 Murten Date de début : avril durée prévue: 24 mois Descriptif du projet Développement d une valve pilotée pour circuits de refroidissement de véhicules automobiles par des méthodes hautement performantes. Une régulation thermique optimisée des moteurs à explosion permet de réduire leur consommation et leurs émissions polluantes. L ajout de fonctions d hybridation (machines électriques à haute puissance, packs de batteries) nécessite des circuits de refroidissement supplémentaires. En conséquence, des circuits de refroidissement complexes ont fait leur apparition, ils comportent plusieurs branches devant être régulées indépendamment. Une méthode de développement d un actionneur pilotant une telle valve avait été étudiée lors d un projet précédent Afin d'obtenir un système complet, la partie hydraulique, soit la valve ellemême doit être étudiée. Le but de ce projet est donc de développer, d une part, la partie valve d'un tel système et son optimisation par des méthodes de simulation numériques avancées et, d autre part, une méthode avancée d'optimisation permettant d'aboutir rapidement et de manière rationnelle à un design de vanne optimal. 8 FURIES WP3 AC/DC MULTI-TERMINAL NETWORKS AC/DC SYSTEM INTERACTIONS Financement : CTI SCCER Collaboration with : EPFL, ETHZ, EOS Holding, Swissgrid Starting date : January duration 36 months Project description Multi-terminal DC transmission is not yet commercially used, but it is anticipated to be a relevant option for system expansion or reinforcement soon. The deployment of this novel solution needs to be prepared in order to minimise technical risks and to ensure the interoperability of these systems. - Key challenge 1: Gain clarity on the needed operational co-ordination of embedded HVDC systems within synchronous AC systems. - Key challenge 2: Improve the fault behaviour and topology of HVDC converters to prepare them for use in multi-terminal DC grids. Within SCCER FURIES, HEIG-VD and HEIA-FR are investigating modular multilevel converters for HVDC and renewable energy connections. On the system side (AC-DC interactions), the effect of network resonances and dynamic stability contributions from HVDC are investigated. 9 DEVELOPMENT OF 30 KW H2-AIR FUEL CELL STACK FOR AUTOMOTIVE APPLICATIONS Funds : CTI Collaboration with : EPFL, Belenos Clean Power Starting date : duration 2 years Project description The aim of this project is to develop a 10 kw and a 30 kw H2-air fuel cell (FC) stack for automotive applications based on innovative Swiss technology for air compressors. The target is to overcome some of the drawbacks of H2-O2 fuel cell and conventional FC air supply systems. The goal will be to provide a FC system using air as oxidant offering a) an excellent fuel efficiency and b) compactness and price-worthiness close to the performance achieved with a pure oxygen FC system. The sub-task of HEIG-VD in this project is to develop test benches and test different FC configurations/technologies. 10 AGREFLEX : AGGREGATION OF ELECTRICAL LOADS Funds : CTI - SCCER et EOS Holding Collaboration with : EPFL, Belenos Clean Power Starting date : duration 3 years Project description Storage of electrical energy will play a key role to enable the large scale deployment of intermittent renewables. The control of flexible electrical loads, mainly systems for electric heating and electrical domestic hot water preparation, offers services equivalent to short-term (day scale) and mid-term (week scale) storage. The goal of the Agreflex project is to design solutions enabling groups of flexible loads to be controlled as a single resource modelled as a battery. Such a resource would then be managed by a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) controller. Concretely, the following activities are performed: estimation of shiftable power and energy at the scale of Switzerland, design and simulation of aggregation algorithms requiring a limited exchange of control information between the controlled sites and the aggregator, performance verification based on measurement of buildings. 11 SCCER SUPPLY OF ELECTRICITY WP 3.2 Financement : CTI - SCCER Collaboration avec : EPFL Date de début : durée 3 ans Descriptif du projet En 2012, la puissance mondiale installée dans le domaine de la petite hydraulique était estimée approximativement à 75 GW, représentant plus de 7% de la capacité hydraulique totale. En Suisse en 2010, il y avait déjà plus de 1300 petites centrales hydroélectriques en fonctionnement pour une capacité installée de 859 MW représentant plus de 5% de la production d'électricité du pays. La mise hors service progressive des centrales nucléaires en Suisse nécessite l'installation de nouveaux moyens de production d'électricité. Le potentiel de la petite hydraulique est évalué à 1,3-1,6 TWh selon l'ofen. L'objectif de ce projet de développer une gamme de microturbines axiales pour récupérer l'énergie dissipée par les réducteurs de pression des réseaux d'eau potable Ce projet s'inscrit dans le cadre du projet SCCER 4 Supply of Electricity. 12 SCCER FURIES WP DU MICRO POMPAGE-TURBINAGE POUR RÉGULER LOCALEMENT LE RÉSEAU Financement : CTI - SCCER Date de début : durée 2 ans Descriptif du projet Un système de production électrique incluant une grande part d'énergies renouvelables de nature intermittente doit faire appel à des capacités de stockage que seules les centrales de pompage-turbinage sont à même d'offrir. Dans le domaine de la grande hydraulique, cette technique de stockage est relativement bien connue et certaines technologies comme les pompesturbines ont été développées spécifiquement pour ce type d'application. A petite échelle, le micro pompage-turbinage est une solution envisageable pour contrôler localement le réseau électrique (compensation chargerenouvelables, services de support réseau). Contrairement au cas de la grande hydraulique, ce type d'installation n'a pas encore été réalisé pour les petites puissances, ceci peut s'expliquer en partie par le fait que le rendement des pompes dans cette gamme de puissance n'est pas optimisé. Ce projet a pour but d'étudier et d'identifier les technologies de la petite hydraulique les plus adaptées pour ce type d'installation. Le projet comportera également une évaluation des avantages liée aux systèmes de support aux réseaux: contrôle optimal de la tension, gestions de l'écrêtement de la demande d'énergie de point, dispatching optimal. 13 GLOBALDIAGNOSTIX - A NOVEL SELF-HEALING MEDICAL DIAGNOSTIC X-RAY POWER SOURCE Financement : CTI Date de début : durée 3 ans Descriptif du projet Le projet GlobalDiagnostiX consiste à développer une machine de radiographie numérique incluant un module d'échographie, ayant un coût total inférieur à $50'000 (c.-à-d. une réduction d'un facteur 10 par rapport à la technologie actuelle), pour les pays pauvres. L'objectif du travail est d étudier une nouvelle structure pour la partie d'alimentation haute-tension (40-120kV) du tube d'une machine rayon-x conçue selon diverses contraintes, ainsi que de réaliser un démonstrateur des concepts proposés. The plug-and-play concept to be developed will require a low investment for the final customers, reaching economic feasibility with an available hydraulic power below 25 kw. A new part of the Swiss and international renewable energy potential will then be targeted and profitably exploited. 15 MINIATURISIERUNG DES TORUS-SPIRALGETRIEBES IN KUNSTSTOFF-STAHL UND KUNSTSTOFF-KUNSTSTOFF ZUR ERSCHLIESSUNG DES MASSENMARKTES DER HOCHUNTERSETZTEN KLEINGETRIEBE Finanzierung : KTI In Zusammenarbeit mit Tedec AG, Johnson Electric APG und Thermoplast AG Beginn : April Monate Projektbeschreibung Daten und Prozesse wurden erarbeitet um ein torus -Getriebe mit der Materialpaarung Stahl-Kunststoff herstellen und anbieten zu können. Dazu wurden Versagensmechanismen und optimale Schmierstoffkombinationen untersucht. Mittels modernster Simulationswerkzeuge wurden die Belastungswerte im Vergleich zu einem vergleichbaren Schneckengetriebe analysiert und ein thermisches Auslegungstool programmiert. Prototypen wurden sowohl auf einem eigens gefertigten Dauerlaufprüfstand, als auch auf einem Wechsellastprüfstand in einer Klimakammer im Benchmark gegen von der Automobilindustrie zertifizierte Serienantriebe getestet. Das Projekt hat gezeigt, dass ein torus-getriebe aus Kunststoff herstellbar und funktionsfähig ist. Der bisherige Stand der Technik lässt darauf schliessen, dass ein Markt vorhanden ist. Insbesondere im Wettbewerb mit Schneckengetrieben ist das torus-getriebe für Anwendungsfälle in denen Selbsthemmung, eine hohe Übersetzung bei geringem Platzbedarf und geringer Verschleiss gefordert ist eine erstzunehmende Alternative. 16 ACTIVE INTERFACES - HOLISTIC STRATEGY TO ACCELERATE THE TRANSPOSITION OF ADVANCED BIPV ADAPTED SOLUTIONS INTO REAL INNOVATIVE RACTICES Funds : SNF NRP 70 Collaboration with EPFL, CSEM Starting date : October 2014 duration 36 months Project description Building-integrated photovoltaic systems (BIPV) could be a high growth market with high impact for the economy and the "Energiewende". A better understanding of the technology acceptance and of the needs of the market is required for the design of optimised solutions and to ensure efficient knowledge and technology transfer. Value proposition breakdown along the value chain is essential to guarantee benefits for each actors. The research will focus on the systems studied and developed in the joint project, in the context of urban renewal in general and applied to the City of Neuchatel. Once realistic and promissing value propositions will be assessed for the key market segments and technologies, the project will focus on the design and implementation of communication and knowledge transfer tools. 17 HYDROPOWER OPERATION AND ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE IN A CHANGING MARKET ENVIRONMENT (HP-OPERATION) Funds : SNF - NRP 70 Collaboration with : Uni Basel, Uni Geneva, HTW Chur, Alpiq, FMV, AET, Misurio Starting date : October duration 3,5 years Project description To successfully implement the Energy Strategy 2050 sufficient investments are required, that needs to be financed by the operation. Thus, production needs to become more flexible to cope with the increased volatility of the market. The aim of this project is to provide modeling tools and insights how HP operation can account for those challenges by extending the existing approaches to account for different trading alternatives and market segments like future markets, the energy spot-market, or the reserve capacity market while at the same time include the technical and socio-economic constraints on the plant operation. This will be done for single and cascading hydropower plants. Also we will provide a methodology and tooling for the economic assessment of upcoming HP techniques that can increase efficiency or flexibility of HP production. This information will help the Swiss hydropower industry, to increase their profitability and therefore support the goals of the Energy Strategy 2050, and increase their competitive situation in the European energy market. 18 MODÉLISATION D'UN SYSTÈME ÉNERGÉTIQUE DURABLE EN INCLUANT LES PARAMÈTRES COMPORTEMENTAUX ET SOCIAUX Financement : FNS - SCOPES Collaboration avec Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies Date de début : octobre durée 3 ans Descriptif du projet Suivant leur dessein de réduire les émissions de gaz à effet de serre, les pays européens cherchent à diminuer drastiquement leur consommation d énergie. Ce projet propose de modéliser le système énergétique de la Roumanie afin de découvrir la meilleure politique énergétique pour ce pays. Une contribution significative et innovante sera l intégration des économies d énergie réalisable grâce à un changement de comportement des consommateurs. Pour cela, nous ferons une enquête sociologique en Roumanie. Les résultats seront comparés aux toutes récentes enquêtes réalisées par notre équipe en Suisse, afin de déterminer les similitudes et les différences entre ces deux pays. 19 TESTS, SIMULATION AND VALIDATION OF ADSORPTION HEAT PUMP APPLICATIONS Funds : SNF - NRP70 Collaboration avec : IBM, PSI, HSR Rapperswil Starting date : December 2014, duration 3 years Project description This project belongs to a joint project untitled: Thermally driven adsorption heat pumps for substitution of electricity and fossil fuels (THRIVE). The objective of THRIVE is to develop an adsorption heat pump (AdHP) able to upgrade low-grade thermal energy to satisfy the space heating demand and use driving heat to meet the cooling demand of residential and administrative buildings. Different sources of low-grade heat will be studied during this jointproject (industrial processes, waste incineration, district heating networks, cogeneration solar thermal energy or gas burners). The AdHP developed within this joint project will have a 10kW cooling capacity and a 30kW heating capacity. The main objectives of this project are the following: - identification of application opportunities and early markets where the developed AdHP could be adopted first; - experimental validation of the adsorption heat pump performances; - testing and optimization of the first and second AdHP assembled in the associated subprojects; - development and validation of a thermal performance model of AdHP with TRNSYS. 20 SYSTEMIC, MULTI-SCALE APPROACH TO INTEGRATION OF RENEWABLE ENERGIES IN ELECTRIC POWER SYSTEMS Financement : FNS - AP Energy Grant Date de début : août 2014 durée 4 ans Descriptif du projet Le tournant énergétique amorcé dans notre pays, en particulier la fermeture annoncée des centrales nucléaires et la politique de réduction des émissions des gaz à effet de serre vont engendrer une pénétration accrue, très importante à terme, des nouvelles sources d'énergie renouvelable. Ce projet propose une approche systémique "top-down" à l'intégration de ces sources d'électricité fluctuantes non contrôlables dans le réseau électrique. L'approche consiste à considérer le réseau électrique suisse comme ensemble de sousréseaux de plus en plus nombreux et de taille de plus en plus petite. De manière récursive, la location, la capacité et la nature des solutions de stockage seront précisées avec une résolution grandissante (géographique et en terme de niveau de tension). Les buts du projet sont de proposer des scénarios d'intégration de renouvelables optimaux aux sens Ecologique, Economique, de l'equilibre du réseau et de l'efficience énergétique. The project will shed some light on a number of questions, particularly: - the understanding of how the market for raw wood functions namely the elements of aggregate demand and supply and their developments over time; - the values placed by the users and the society as a whole on the existence of the forest ecosystem, as well as the relative value of the different forest functions compared to the economic function of producing wood; - the determinants of the level of current costs and of the production inefficiency within the timber industry; - the behaviour of the timber industry and the implicit values attached by the industry to various services derived from forests. 22 CARACTÉRISATION DES MODULES PHOTOVOLTAÏQUES À COLORANT DE L ENTREPRISE G2E (GLASS TO ENERGY) Financement : OFEN Collaboration avec : g2e Date de début : 2013 durée 2 ans Descriptif du projet L'entreprise Glass To Energy (g2e) développe la fabrication de panneaux solaires à colorant sur la base de la technologie «Grätzel» développée par l EPFL. L objectif du projet est de développer des instruments de mesure et caractérisation de ces cellules, accordés à leurs spécificités. Par exemple, des posages avec éléments Peltiers permettent la caractérisation en température. Et un posage situé sur le toit de la HEIG-VD raccordé à un système d acquisition permet la mesure de leurs performances en temps réel et dans les conditions concrètes d utilisation. Des systèmes MPPT particuliers ont été développés, adaptés à la caractéristique de panneaux individuels. The mixed product cultivation is an approach to enhance the productivity of any fermentation process and here exemplified for a flexible bioelectrical system that promises to enhance the overall atom economy in bioelectric systems. 24 PEEAP COMPTEURS Financement : OFEN Collaboration avec Romande Energie, Groupe-e, Spontis Date de début : janvier 2014, durée 6 mois Descriptif du projet L OFEN poursuit différentes études et mesures d'augmentation de l'efficacité de l'utilisation finale de l'électricité. Cette étude traite le potentiel d économie énergétique des compteurs d électricité, donc à l'un des aspects "en amont" de la consommation. Son périmètre se limite aux compteurs ménage. Les objectifs principaux du projet sont : la détermination, par une analyse «bottom-up», du potentiel d'économie de courant sur la consommation propre des compteurs électriques basse tension, la réaliser de l'analyse avec la participation active des entreprises électriques de la Suisse Romande, l'identification d'éventuels projets ou programmes qui pourraient entrer dans le cadre d'appels d'offre publique. Ce projet comprend plusieurs volets: Détermination de l épaisseur optimale d isolation, Rénovation des bâtiments avec un chauffage électrique, participation à une Annexe de l AIE et analyse énergétique, environnementale et financière de la rénovation énergétique à très haute efficacité d une habitation multifamiliales (60 appartements). 26 CAMPAGNE DE MESURES: INSTALLATION SOLAIRE THERMIQUE À HAUTE TEMPÉRATURE DE COLAS SUISSE SA Financement : OFEN Collaboration avec : OFEN, COLAS Suisse SA, SRBenergy, SPF, MRI, Romande Energie Date de début : 2013, durée 3 ans Descriptif du projet Ce projet a pour but d analyser les performances d une installation solaire à haute température (jusqu à 200 C) intégrée sur le site industriel de COLAS Suisse SA à Yverdon-les-Bains. Il vise également à montrer et promouvoir les bénéfices liés à l'utilisation de la chaleur solaire avec stockage thermique sur des sites industriels. Cette installation utilise l énergie solaire à la fois pour assurer une partie des besoins énergétiques en chauffage et eau chaude sanitaire du bâtiment de fonction du site et pour maintenir en température deux cuves de stockage de 100m3 bitume. Les différentes étapes du projet sont : Mesure des performances ; Modélisation numérique de l installation ; Optimisation thermique, économique et environnementale de l installation. 27 UTILISATION OPTIMALE DES POMPES EN PARALLÈLE Financement : OFEN et Fondation ProTechno Date de début : 2014, durée 2 ans Descriptif du projet Les pompes, les ventilateurs, les compresseurs et les autres machines entraînées par les moteurs électriques représentent près de 2/3 de l'électricité consommée dans le secteur industriel et près de 1/3 de l'électricité consommée dans le secteur tertiaire. En suisse, ces applications représentent plus de 40% de la consommation totale d'électricité. Dans de nombreuses installations, plusieurs pompes fonctionnent en parallèle. C'est le cas des groupes de surpression, du pompage des eaux usées, des systèmes de conduites communales et de nombreuses applications industrielles. L'installation et l'exploitation judicieuses du système permettent une utilisation efficace d'un point de vue énergétique avec une fiabilité élevée. Le projet a pour principal objectif de réaliser un banc d'essais afin de montrer l'intérêt d'une utilisation rationnelle des pompes en parallèle avec un contrôle approprié visant une optimisation du rendement et de la fiabilité de l'installation. Le banc d'essais sera utilisé et valorisé comme outil didactique dans le cadre de post-formations et pour les laboratoires d étudiants à la HEIG- VD. 28 SIMULER DES INSTALLATIONS GÉOTHERMIQUES MESURÉES Financement : OFEN, programme SuisseEnergie Collaboration avec : EWZ Date de début : 2014, durée 1 an Descriptif du projet L objectif principal de l étude vise à simuler des installations géothermiques mesurées pour observer comment les calculs reproduisent les mesures. L étude est effectuée sur des installations dont on dispose de mesures suffisamment détaillées qui permettent de refléter son fonctionnement réel. Les installations sont choisies en fonction des critères suivants : - installation pour le chauffage uniquement ; - installation avec quelques sondes géothermiques, mais le nombre exact reste ouvert ; - disposer d un minimum de 5 ans de mesures, idéalement une dizaine d années ; - les données techniques de l installation, sondes géothermiques et terrain inclus, sont connues et disponibles. L outil de calcul utilisé pour l étude est TRNSBM, qui n est autre que le programme SBM (Superposition Borehole Model) intégré dans le software TRNSYS (Transient System Simulation). 30 SEPIA : SOCIAL CUSHIONING OF ENERGY PRICE INCREASES AND PUBLIC ACCEPTABILITY Financement : OFEN Collaboration with : Econability, EPFL, Université de Genève Starting date : 2013, duration 2 years Project description The project investigates distributional and other effects of energy price increases and the acceptability of social cushioning measures. It also investigates how social cushioning and other measures can increase the acceptability of policy-induced energy price increases. The project builds on two very distinctive but complementary methods: 1) Simulations with a dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model, GENESwIS, with disaggregated sectors and households (according to income groups, working vs. retired population, and rural vs. urban population), to evaluate distributional and other effects of scenarios that include significant energy price increases and social cushioning measures. 2) A representative survey to identify acceptable policy packages that involve both energy price increases and social cushioning measures for these price increases. The survey will also be designed to help us to identify ways in which the acceptability of such policy packages can be increased. 31 RENOVE - LOGICIEL POUR LA RÉNOVATION ÉNERGÉTIQUE DES BÂTIMENTS Financement : OFEN avec Enerconseil Sàrl Début : 2009, durée 2 ans Descriptif du projet Le logiciel renove ( a été développé dans l objectif de fournir une aide à la décision aux acteurs du marché de la rénovation (entreprises de construction, régies immobilières, fournisseurs de matériel, architectes ou entrepreneurs). renove est basé sur le moteur de calcul de bsol et réalise un diagnostic de l'immeuble sur la base d'indications fournies par l'utilisateur. Les résultats permettent d'évaluer le potentiel d'économie d'énergie de chauffage et d'estimer les coûts des travaux d'amélioration. Cette application en ligne est simple à utiliser afin d'encourager les propriétaires et les gérants d'immeubles à envisager l'idée d'une rénovation de l'enveloppe du bâtiment et des installations techniques. 32 ROBUST INTERNAL THERMAL INSULATION OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS (RIBUILD) Funds : Horizon 2020 Collaboration with : Academic institutions and private companies from DK, LV, BE, D, IT, SE and CH Starting date : 2015, duration 5 years Project description The general objective of RIBuild is to develop effective, comprehensive decision guidelines to optimise the design and implementation of internal thermal insulation in historic buildings across the EU. RIBuild focuses on heavy external walls made of stone, brick and timber framing, as most historic buildings are made of these materials. After a screening of historic buildings to characterise their eligibility for deep internal thermal insulation renovation, a major part of the work is dedicated to the development of assessment methods based on probabilistic modelling of the hygrothermal performance, the environmental impact and the cost/benefit will be developed. Finally, the feasibility of the methodology is demonstrated in a number of case studies. The knowledge developed by RIBuild contributes to sustainable historic buildings with improved energy efficiency implying an easier conversion of energy supply from inefficient fossil fuels to efficient renewable energy sources. The guidelines developed in the project will strongly support the deep and holistic retrofitting approach which historic buildings face in the coming years. 34 ORION (ORGANIC WASTE MANAGEMENT BY A SMALL- SCALE INNOVATIVE AUTOMATED SYSTEM OF ANAEROBIC DIGESTION) Funds : FP7 Collaboration with 19 academic and industrial partners in Ireland, UK, Spain, France, Italy, Turkey and Switzerland Starting date : August 2012, duration 3 years Project description Restaurants, hotels, markets, fisheries and other small to medium size agrofood industries have to manage 239 million tons of organic waste in Europe every year. The specific management of such waste, with respect to the legislative regulations of EU, involves costly treatment for SMEs and potential hygiene issues on site. ORION aims at allowing a vast majority of SMEs to manage their organic waste by themselves in order to decrease their treatment costs (storage, transport, landfill or incineration) and increase on-site hygiene conditions. Wastes will also be valorised as biomass to produce energy and increase SME autonomy and profitability. The contribution of the Life Technologies Institute focused mainly at assessing the suitability of various types of organic wastes as substrates for anaerobic digestion. As a result, the overarching objective of the project is the enhanced hydropower plant value by extending the flexibility of its operating range, while also improving its long-term availability. To address this ambitious research plan, a consortium has been assembled featuring three leading hydraulic turbines, storage pumps, reversible pump-turbine and electric equipment manufacturers, an emblematic utility company, SME, as well as worldrenowned academic institutions. Extensive tests both on both experimental rigs and real power plants will be performed in order to validate the obtained methodological and numerical results. The project s innovative approach is based on the development of an open ICT framework that will promote a generic environment for the deployment and innovation of smart grid services in households. A DR service based on novel and cutting-edge aggregation, forecasting and scheduling techniques will be developed and validated on this infrastructure. The consortium will furthermore integrate security and privacy functions in all the elements of SEMIAH to ensure that the system cannot be compromised. 37 BIOPOLYMERS FROM SYNGAS FERMENTATION Funds : FP7 Collaboration with 16 partners in academia and industry : Starting date : 2014, duration 4 years Project description The project is focused on the utilization of synthesis gas in particular carbon monoxide for bacterial fermentations to produce poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), a biodegradable thermoplast, and at the same time to increase the hydrogen content in the offgas for energy gain (e.g. combustion). In order to handle these toxic and explosive gases, a special fermentation platform with direct monitoring (on-line flow cytometry, off-gas analysis by mass spectrometry) and fully automatized control of the bioreactor system has been established, which is unique in Switzerland. Current experiments are focused on increasing the cell density and enhanced thermoplast production. 38 ONSITE Financement : FP7 Collaboration with HT Ceramix SA Starting date : 2015, duration 2 years Descriptif du projet Le projet ONSITE se consacre au développement d une pile à combustible SOFC hybride avec une batterie ZEBRA fonctionnant en cogénération pour les besoins des systèmes de télécommunication. Avec l aide de HT Ceramix SA, l IGT travaille sur l intégration thermique de la post-combustion et de la reformation chimique. En effet, les gaz de combustion contiennent des imbrûlés et un potentiel thermique qu il est essentiel d exploiter. Une campagne de mesure doit permettre la caractérisation thermodynamique d un module de pile SOFC de 2.5 kw. Les tests ont pour objectif de calculer les efficacités électrique et thermique du module simple et d optimiser l intégration de la post-combustion et de la reformation chimique dans un module intégrer. Par la suite, les mesures permettent l élaboration de la stratégie de cogénération et le contrôle du système d un système composé de 4 modules d une puissance totale de 10kW. 39 PLATEFORME POUR LA PROMOTION DE L'ÉCOCONSTRUCTION ET DES ÉCOMATÉRIAUX Financement : Interreg IVA FR-CH Collaboration avec : Oïkos, VAD, Cycleco Date de début : novembre 2013, durée : 18 mois Descriptif du projet Le projet proposé vise à promouvoir les éco-matériaux dans la région couverte par le programme Interreg IVA. La plateforme vise à développer un dispositif d informations et de formation autour de la mise en œuvre des écomatériaux par les artisans en région. L acquisition et la création de données fiable, le développement d outils (logiciels et fiches de bonnes pratiques), la réalisation d atelier et le développement d un cours pilote de sensibilisation auprès des apprenants dans le domaine du bâtiment ainsi que l évaluation de l état actuel de la formation dans ce domaine représentent le socle nécessaire afin de promouvoir l utilisation d écomatériaux. Ce dernier point devrait permettre de créer un engouement pour les matériaux produits localement et donc de permettre, à long-terme, l essor de producteurs régionaux.
