Your Chapter is here to help you manage this pressure and offer options to adapt. For example, on the political front: we have the first majority federal government in five years which will change the nature of government relations with members of parliament and their committees. A tepid economic recovery threatens meeting sponsorship and challenges increases in membership dues. Similarly, technological changes in the way we and our members communicate through social media continue to evolve. Your CSAE community can help you adapt to change and achieve success. Through our local education sessions and networking meetings we are working to help you. This is the power of the CSAE community. Sharing knowledge is the key to the CSAE community The CSAE Ottawa-Gatineau s chapter`s tagline, Connecting members, Sharing knowledge, Tisser des liens, Partager le savoir succinctly describes our goals for this year. Building on the success of last year, our committees and volunteers delivered five newsletters and 26 educational and networking events. We lead the country on this front. These events are the foundation that build strong relationships. These relationships enable the sharing of not just data or information, but knowledge. Wikipedia defines knowledge as information and skills acquired through experience; the practical understanding of a subject. Reading an article about the changing political, economic or technological landscape is certainly helpful, but I have found that it is invaluable to speak to other members about how they and their association have adapted to these changes. I encourage you to come out to meetings more regularly this up-coming year. I know that you are busy, but I believe that you will reap a rich return on investment of your time on both a professional and personal level if you come out and be involved in the society s networking events. You will be welcomed. Measured strategic goals for the up-coming year This column is too short to go over the chapter s full strategic plan, but I can assure you that each committee (communications, membership, PACE (education)) has goals that are based on your thoughtful feedback. These goals will be measured. One example is the communications committee s plan led by Francois Brunet and Dawn Kelly. They have tapped into new communications media and social networking to connect with and engage our members. The committee has set-up a Chapter LinkedIn Group (more than 150 members now, aiming for 250 by next year) a Marketing-Communications LinkedIn Sub-Group, a new enewsletter format and they are looking at an online option for our Chapter newsletter magazine. The Chapter has a lot to look forward to. Recognizing the people that make it happen The Chapter s 26 events last year were made possible due to the many thoughtful volunteers who devoted their skills and many hours of effort. I would like to thank all the Chapter s volunteers for their work throughout the year. You will recognize these people as doers. They get things done. I am happy to know them. I would also like to recognize their bosses who allow them to take the time to attend and be involved. A special thanks to our business members whose generous support make these meetings extraordinary. I am looking forward to connecting and sharing some knowledge with you in the fall. Votre Section est là pour vous aider à gérer cette pression et vous offrir des options pour vous adapter. Par exemple, sur le plan politique, l arrivée du premier gouvernement fédéral majoritaire en cinq ans va transformer la nature des relations gouvernementales avec les députés et leurs comités. La tiédeur de la reprise économique plane sur la commandite de réunion et nous complique la tâche de réunir les cotisations de nos membres. Et les changements technologiques de nos modes de communication avec nos membres par l entremise des médias sociaux continuent d évoluer. La communauté de la Société canadienne des directeurs d association (SCDA) dont nous faisons tous partie peut vous aider à vous adapter au changement et à réussir. Nous travaillons pour vous aider par l entremise des séances d éducation locales et des rencontres de réseautage que nous vous offrons. C est là que réside la force de la communauté de la SCDA. Le partage du savoir est la clé de la communauté de la SCDA Le slogan de la Section Ottawa-Gatineau de la SCDA, «Connecting members, Sharing knowledge, Tisser des liens, Partager le savoir» décrit succinctement nos objectifs pour cette année. S appuyant sur nos succès antérieurs, nos comités et nos bénévoles ont produit cinq bulletins et organisé 26 événements d éducation et de réseautage. Nous sommes les premiers au pays sur ce front. Ces événements sont le socle de l édification de solides relations. Des relations qui permettent de partager nos seulement des données ou des renseignements, mais le savoir. Wikipédia nous dit que Le Trésor de la Langue Française informatisé définit le savoir ainsi : «Ensemble des connaissances d une personne ou d une collectivité acquises par l étude, par l observation, par l apprentissage et/ou par l expérience.» On parle également de compréhension pratique d un sujet dans le Wikipedia en anglais. Si lire un article sur la transformation du paysage politique, économique ou technologique peut certainement être utile, j ai constaté qu il n y a rien comme de discuter avec d autres membres de ce qu ils ont fait pour s adapter, et adapter leur association, à ces changements. Je vous encourage à venir aux réunions plus régulièrement au cours de l année à venir. Je sais que vous êtes occupés, mais je suis convaincu que le temps que vous consacrerez à ces événements vous sera extrêmement profitable, à la fois sur le plan professionnel et personnel, si vous venez nous rencontrer et que vous participez aux événements de réseautage de la SCDA. Vous serez accueillis à bras ouverts. Objectifs stratégiques mesurés pour l année à venir Je n ai pas assez d espace ici pour passer en revue l ensemble du plan stratégique de la Section, mais je vous assure que chacun de nos comités (communications, services aux membres, programmes et éducation permanente) a des objectifs qui sont basés sur vos commentaires réfléchis. Ces objectifs vont être mesurés. Prenons par exemple le cas du plan des communications sous la direction de François Brunet et Dawn Kelly. Ils ont su bien utiliser les nouveaux médias de communication et de réseautage social pour rejoindre nos membres et les inciter à participer à nos activités. Le comité des communications a créé un groupe LinkedIn de la Section (déjà 150 membres, objectif 250 d ici l an prochain), créé un sous groupe LinkedIn Marketing- Communications, élaboré un nouveau format de bulletin électronique, en plus d envisager actuellement la mise en oeuvre d une option d affichage en ligne du bulletin magazine de notre Section. La Section a un excellent avenir. Reconnaissance des personnes qui font en sorte que ça se produise Les 26 événements de la Section organisés l an dernier ont été rendus possibles grâce au travail ardu des nombreux bénévoles qui ont consacré leurs compétences à la réalisation de ces projets et qui n ont pas ménagé leurs heures pour les concrétiser. J aimerais remercier tous les bénévoles de la Section pour leur travail au cours de l année. Ce sont des gens d action. Ils font avancer les choses. Je suis heureux de les connaître. Je désire également saluer leurs patrons qui leur permettent de prendre le temps de participer à nos activités. Remerciement spécial à nos membres Affaires dont le soutien généreux nous permet de vous offrir des réunions au cachet extraordinaire. 3 FUNDRAISING CLINIC By Tim Stutt Telemarketing as Effective Fundraising (Part Two) Even in today s wired world people still want to do business using the phone. Telemarketing takes advantage of the quick, inexpensive and personal nature of the telephone call when presenting a case to potential donors. So any association with a positive public image can use telemarketing to raise money. Sure, everyone has received a rude telephone solicitation. And we have all had our dinners or television viewing interrupted at one time or another by someone calling to ask for a donation. Yet many respected associations continue to use telemarketing effectively to raise dollars for their causes. In my last fundraising clinic article I defined four essential criteria for association telemarketing success. This time around I will talk more about each of these four criteria. Success in Telemarketing Experience shows that telemarketing works best when your association has a prior relationship with prospective donors or when it is used along with other fundraising methods. Ultimately, establishing a personal contact with your association s current and prospective supporters to solidify and enlarge your donor base is the name of the game. So your association s telemarketing success depends on four things: 1) Targeting those most likely and most able to give to your cause. The telephone can be used for more than simply renewing annual support or trolling for new supporters. Your association should consider the potential of telemarketing to: bring lapsed donors back to regular giving; convince people who used to give two or more times a year to give monthly gifts by credit card or pre-authorized chequing; upgrade the monthly gifts of those already giving in this way; follow-up on an urgent or time sensitive mail appeal; and thank donors for a very generous donation or for long-time support. 2) Effectively organizing and managing both your callers and the phone where they do their calling. Good telemarketing callers have four key characteristics. They are patient and sensitive, aware of your association s mission and programming, able to handle rejection and move on to the next call and are enthusiastic and cheerful. The phone room in which telemarketing callers do their work should have enough space so each caller feels comfortable, good lighting, good ventilation, space for portable chalk boards and the capacity to handle several telephone lines. 3) Using a well-written script (or a well-written and informative smart phone application). A telemarketing script or smart phone application is a written appeal to a prospective donor. It contains predetermined responses to anticipated questions and deviations in the conversation. Use of a script in a telemarketing campaign allows your association to tailor its appeal quickly, easily and effectively. The successful script contains five important characteristics: It identifies your association. It has a clear intention of what your association wants the donor to do. Its approach is geared to the interests of your various prospective donors. It suggests a donation amount and a method of payment. It lets the donor know what recognition there is for gift levels. 4) Building long-term support for your association versus short-term profits. The benefits of fundraising by telephone are considerable. But keep in mind the purpose of telemarketing is to develop a longterm relationship with donors, both current and potential. Financial rewards will follow if donors feel the telemarketing is part of a longerterm process that involves more than immediate financial gains. 4 CLINIQUE DE FINANCEMENT Par Tim Stutt Le télémarketing comme moyen de financement efficace (2 e partie) Même dans notre monde branché d aujourd hui, les gens veulent encore faire des affaires au téléphone. Le télémarketing tire profit du caractère rapide, économique et personnel du téléphone pour faire appel à des donateurs potentiels. Toute association qui jouit d une image publique positive peut donc utiliser le télémarketing pour recueillir des fonds. Nous avons certainement tous déjà fait l objet d une sollicitation téléphonique désagréable. Et nous nous sommes tous fait interrompre à l heure du souper ou de notre émission de télévision préférée pour nous faire demander de l argent. Et pourtant, de nombreuses organisations respectées continuent d utiliser le télémarketing comme outil de collecte de fonds pour leurs causes. Dans mon récent article sur le sujet, j ai présenté quatre critères essentiels à la réussite du télémarketing pour les associations. Le présent article vise à décrire chacun de ces critères en détails. Le télémarketing fructueux L expérience montre que le télémarketing fonctionne le mieux lorsque votre association a déjà une relation avec les donateurs potentiels ou lorsqu il est combiné à d autres méthodes de collecte de fonds. En dernière analyse, la clé de la consolidation et de l élargissement de votre bassin de donateurs est l établissement de contacts personnels avec vos bienfaiteurs actuels et éventuels. Le succès des efforts de télémarketing de votre association dépend de quatre facteurs. 1) Cibler les personnes et les organismes les plus susceptibles et capables d appuyer votre cause Le téléphone peut servir à bien plus qu à simplement renouveler un soutien financier annuel ou à chercher de nouveaux bienfaiteurs. Votre association devrait considérer le potentiel du marketing pour : inciter d anciens donateurs à recommencer à faire des dons réguliers; convaincre les gens qui font des dons deux ou trois fois par année de s inscrire à un plan de don mensuel par carte de crédit ou par chèques préautorisés; inviter les gens qui font déjà un don mensuel à augmenter le montant de leur don; 4 OTTAWA-GATINEAU EXECUTIVE Summer / Été 2011 CANADIAN SOCIETY OF ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVES

5 faire un suivi par rapport à une campagne par correspondance urgente ou à échéance serrée; remercier les donateurs pour un don généreux ou pour un appui de longue date. 2) Organiser et gérer efficacement à la fois vos préposés aux appels et la salle de téléphones où ils travaillent Pour être efficaces, les préposés au télémarketing doivent posséder quatre traits essentiels. Ils doivent être : (1) patients et sensibles; (2) conscients de la mission et des programmes de votre association; (3) capables de composer avec le rejet et de passer à l appel suivant; (4) enthousiastes et enjoués. La salle d appel où vos préposés travaillent doit être suffisamment grande pour que chaque préposé se sente à l aise; elle doit également être bien éclairée, bien ventilée et suffisamment grande pour accueillir des tableaux portatifs ainsi que plusieurs lignes téléphoniques. 3) Utiliser un script bien écrit (ou une application téléphonique intelligente et informative) Les scripts de télémarketing et les applications téléphoniques intelligentes sont des appels écrits à d éventuels donateurs. Ils contiennent des réponses prédéterminées à des questions possibles et à des écarts dans la conversation. L utilisation d un script dans une campagne de télémarketing permet à votre association de personnaliser ses appels de façon rapide, aisée et efficace. Un bon script possède cinq caractéristiques importantes : Il identifie votre association; Il présente clairement ce que votre association veut du donateur; Il est axé sur les intérêts de vos différents donateurs potentiels; Il suggère un montant ainsi qu une méthode de paiement; Il informe le donateur de la reconnaissance qu il recevra pour différents niveaux de dons. 4) Bâtir un soutien à long terme pour votre association, et non simplement viser des profits à court terme Les avantages de la collecte de fonds par téléphone sont considérables. Mais n oubliez pas que l objectif du télémarketing est de bâtir des relations à long terme avec vos donateurs actuels et potentiels. Les récompenses financières s ensuivront si les donateurs sentent que le télémarketing fait partie d un processus à long terme qui met en jeu plus que des gains financiers immédiats. 6 CSAE Ottawa-Gatineau May 25 th Annual General Meeting and Chapter Awards CSAE Ottawa Gatineau s 2010/2011 program year culminated with the Annual General Meeting and Awards presentation on May 25 th, Chapter members and guests enjoyed the networking reception sponsor by Tourism Québec and a wonderful lunch hosted by the Fairmont Château Laurier. The Year in Review In her remarks, outgoing President Suzanne Lavictoire noted that it has been an exceptional year for the Chapter - one of celebration and successes. In June 2010, the Board engaged in a 3-year strategic planning exercise. The implementation of this plan has provided the roadmap to help deliver value to Chapter members. In September, to mark the its 50 th anniversary, the Chapter kicked-off its programming season with a great social event at the Lone Star Ranch. This milestone was an opportunity to celebrate members, examine our history, take pride in our successes and look ahead to our future. The 2010 golf tournament at the Kanata Lakes Golf and Country Club was another sold-out event and a picture-perfect afternoon for those who took time away from busy schedules to participate. Tête-a-Tête, the Chapter s annual rendezvous and tradeshow, exceeded all expectations once again with the highest delegate and exhibitor registration. We can only expect greater things next February when Tête-a-Tête takes place at the new Ottawa Convention Centre. The Chapter s community support through fundraising efforts for the local Chapter Charity has demonstrated again our sustained generosity. The Hopewell Eating Disorders Centre has benefitted from over $11,000 raised in the past year. The Chapter has tapped into new communications media and social networking to connect with and engage members. There is now a Chapter LinkedIn Group with over 150 members, a Marketing-Communications LinkedIn Sub-Group and a new ebroadcast format. The Chapter s committees and volunteers delivered 5 newsletters and 26 educational and networking events in 2010/2011. And to top it off, the Chapter has maintained strong and sound finances. Chapter Awards The AGM luncheon also provided an opportunity to honour two members of the CSAE Ottawa-Gatineau Chapter for their generous contribution to the chapter s success over the years. The Executive member of the Year was awarded to Hélène Samson CAE, of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Jeff Hill of BMO Nesbitt Burns was presented with the Business Member of Year award. Congratulations go out to the Nominations Committee and its great work in handling the process of passing the torch to the new Board. 7 Assemblée générale annuelle de la Section Ottawa Gatineau de la SCDA et soirée de remise des Prix le 25 mai dernier L année d activités de la Section Ottawa Gatineau de la Société canadienne des directeurs d association (SCDA) a pris fin à l occasion de la tenue de l Assemblée générale annuelle (AGA) et de la soirée de remise des Prix le 25 mai dernier. Les 140 membres et invités de la section ont apprécié la réception de réseautage parrainée par Tourisme Québec et le délicieux dîner offert par le Fairmont Château Laurier. Revue de l année La présidente sortante Suzanne Lavictoire a dit dans son allocution qu il s est agi d une année exceptionnelle pour la section, remplie de célébrations et de réussites. Le conseil d administration a entrepris en juin 2010 un exercice de planification stratégique de trois ans. La mise en oeuvre de ce plan a établi la feuille de route qui nous a aidés à offrir de la valeur aux membres de la Section. La Section a marqué son 50 e anniversaire en organisant un événement de lancement de sa saison de programmation en septembre, à l occasion d un grand événement social au Lone Star Ranch. Ce jalon nous a donné l occasion de saluer nos membres, de nous pencher sur notre histoire et de tirer fierté ensemble de nos réussites, le regard tourné vers l avenir. Le Tournoi de golf 2010 au Kanata Lakes Golf and Country Club a encore une fois accueilli le nombre maximum de participants qui ont profité de ce superbe après midi pour prendre le temps de mettre un peu le travail de côté afin de participer au tournoi. Tête-a-Tête, l exposition et rendez vous annuel de la section, a dépassé toutes les attentes une fois de plus en accueillant un nombre record de délégués et d exposants. Nous ne pouvons que nous attendre à ce que ce soit encore mieux en février prochain quand Tête-a-Tête aura lieu au nouveau Centre des congrès d Ottawa. Nous avons bien sûr manifesté à nouveau la générosité habituelle de la communauté de notre section en soutenant financièrement l oeuvre de bienfaisance locale que nous privilégions. Au cours de la dernière année, c est le Hopewell Eating Disorders Centre qui a pu profiter d un montant de $ que nous avons amassé au cours de l année. La section a su bien utiliser les nouveaux médias de communication et de réseautage social pour rejoindre ses membres et les inciter à participer à ses activités. Nous avons maintenant un groupe de la Section sur LinkedIn qui comprend plus de 150 membres, un sous groupe Marketing-Communications sur LinkedIn et un nouveau format ebroadcast. Les comités et les bénévoles de la Section ont produit cinq bulletins et 26 événements d éducation et de réseautage en Et la section a maintenu son excellente santé financière. Prix de la section À l occasion du dîner de l AGA, nous avons honoré deux membres de la section Ottawa Gatineau de la SCDA pour leur contribution généreuse aux réussites de la Section au fil des ans. Le prix de membre Exécutif de l année a été décerné à Hélène Samson, c.a.é., du Collège royal des médecins et chirurgiens du Canada. Jeff Hill de BMO Nesbitt Burns a reçu le prix de membre Affaires de l année. Il faut féliciter les membres du Comité des mises en candidature pour l excellent travail qu ils ont accompli afin de transmettre la flamme au nouveau conseil d administration. 12 Retirement Announcement / Annonce de retraite Linda O Rourke MSW, CAE Linda O Rourke, MSW, CAE has announced her retirement from the Canadian College of Health Service Executives effective June 30, As Vice-President of the College s Professional Standards and Leadership Development portfolio, Linda has been instrumental in leading and renewing the College s professional designation (CHE and Fellowship) and leadership development programs over the last seven years. Her ability to develop partnerships, utilize her broad professional network and engage members in the work of the College has been truly outstanding. Linda has had a very successful career, working as a senior leader with a variety of non-profit health care associations at both the provincial and national levels. She has been a very active member of the Canadian Society of Association Executives (CSAE), serving as Past President of the CSAE Ottawa-Gatineau Chapter and in 2008 receiving the Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation. Linda holds a BA in Psychology and Criminology from Carleton University as well as a BSW and a MSW from the University of Calgary with a specialization in Social Policy and Administration. The College will be formally recognizing Linda for her contributions at the College s Annual General Meeting in June. We thank Linda for her commitment to the College and wish her a healthy and enjoyable retirement. Le Collège rendra officiellement hommage à Linda pour sa contribution lors de son Assemblée générale annuelle en juin. 14 April luncheon - annual volunteer appreciation event Robert Elliott, CAE, Canadian Printing Industries Association; Duncan Grant, CAE Association of Canadian Archivists April Luncheon Speaker Catherine Coulter, Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP In keeping with National Volunteer Week in Canada, the CSAE Ottawa-Gatineau Chapter designated the April luncheon as its annual volunteer appreciation event. The focus of the luncheon was to recognize the extraordinary efforts of the many of volunteers who give freely of their time to support the Chapter s mission. Thirty-one Chapter volunteers joined over 160 guests to enjoy a reception hosted by the Direct Energy Centre & Allstream Centre in Toronto. The luncheon was hosted by the Ottawa Convention Centre providing participants with an opportunity to see this brand new facility in action. The luncheon speaker was Catherine Coulter of Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP who spoke on the topic of What You Need To Know About Privacy Now!. 3. When transferring personal information outside of Canada, ensure that individuals consent to their information being processed in a foreign country and being accessible to law enforcement and national security authorities in that other country. 4. Although individuals may in some cases have a reasonable expectation of privacy from state intervention, there should be no reasonable expectation of privacy when it comes to personal information stored on a company s computer or network, particularly if the company has made it clear to employees that it has a right to monitor same for the integrity of the network and/or compliance with a company computer use policy (in a non-unionized workplace setting). Key Privacy Take-Aways 1. Privacy legislation only applies to personal information in connection with commercial activities. As a result, many nonprofit organizations do not need to concern themselves with privacy obligations. 2. Recent proposed amendments to PIPEDA (the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act) may yet come back before Parliament for approval. Those proposed amendments included: (i) mandatory reporting of material breaches to the Privacy Commissioner; (ii) mandatory reporting of breaches to individuals where there is a real risk of significant harm; (iii) a business transaction exemption; and (iv) an expanded carve-out of the definition of business contact information to include business addresses. 15 Dîner d avril - événement annuel de reconnaissance des bénévoles Bryan Glube, Freeman; Lesley Mackay, Delta Hotels and Resorts; Riccarda Galioto, AMMI Canada; Rita Assabgui, CAE, RCPSC; Francois Brunet, DE Systems Dans l esprit de la Semaine de l action bénévole au Canada, la Section Ottawa Gatineau de l Association canadienne des directeurs d association (SCDA) a fait de son dîner d avril son événement annuel de reconnaissance des bénévoles. Le dîner de cette année avait pour thème la reconnaissance des efforts extraordinaires de tous nos bénévoles qui consacrent librement du temps à soutenir la mission de la Section. C est en compagnie de plus de 160 invités que 31 bénévoles de la Section ont apprécié l excellente réception offerte par le Direct Energy Centre & Allstream Centre de Toronto. Le dîner avait lieu au Centre des congrès d Ottawa, une belle occasion pour les participants de découvrir ces nouvelles installations toutes neuves. La conférencière était Catherine Coulter de Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP, dont le thème de l allocution était : «Ce que vous devez savoir à propos de la protection de la vie privée Maintenant!» [traduction]. Choses importantes à retenir au sujet de la protection de la vie privée 1. La loi sur la protection de la vie privée s applique seulement aux renseignements personnels liés aux activités commerciales. Un grand nombre d organismes sans but lucratif n ont donc pas à se soucier d obligations de protection de la vie privée. 2. Les derniers amendements proposés à la Loi sur la protection des renseignements personnels et les documents électroniques (LPRPDE) pourraient être présentés à nouveau devant le Parlement pour y être approuvés. Ces amendements proposés incluaient ce qui suit : (i) l obligation pour les organisations de signaler au Commissaire à la protection de la vie privée toute «atteinte importante» aux mesures de sécurité qui ont trait à des renseignements personnels dont elles ont la gestion; (ii) l obligation d aviser les intéressés s il est «raisonnable de croire dans les circonstances que l atteinte présente un risque réel de préjudice grave à leur endroit; (iii) une exception en matière de transaction commerciale; et (iv) une précision de la définition des coordonnées d affaires indiquant que les dispositions de la LPRPDE relatives aux renseignements personnels ne s appliquent pas aux adresses de courriel d affaires. 3. Lorsque vous transférez des renseignements personnels à l extérieur du Canada, assurez vous que les intéressés consentent à ce que leurs renseignements personnels soient traités dans un pays étranger et puissent être consultés par les organismes chargés de l application de la loi et les organismes de la sécurité nationale du pays en question. 4. Même si les intéressés peuvent avoir dans certains cas une attente raisonnable que leurs renseignements personnels seront protégés d une intervention de l État, il ne doit pas y avoir d attente raisonnable de protection des renseignements privés entreposés sur un ordinateur ou sur le réseau d une compagnie, p a r t i c u l i è rement si la compagnie a indiqué clairement aux employés qu elle a le droit de surveiller les renseignements en question pour assurer l intégrité du réseau, ou pour assurer le respect de la politique d utilisation des ordinateurs de la compagnie (dans un milieu de travail non syndiqué), ou tout cela. 16 Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast June 16 th, 2011 Have you ever been at a networking function and not known what to say or how to break into a new group of colleagues that look like they re having so much fun? Mr. Steve Lowell does and was the guest speaker at the Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast held June 16 th. There was a great turnout of 26 CSAE Ottawa-Gatineau Volunteers at the beautiful breakfast at the Chateau Cartier Hotel and Golf Club. Mr. Lowell said that when people introduce themselves they usually begin with Hi, I m John Smith and I m a mortgage broker. The problem with this according to Lowell is that stating your title doesn t allow for anyone to get a real sense of what you actually do. He says you should actually forget the title and offer a little story about yourself when you introduce yourself so that people will remember you better. People can do this by painting a mental picture of the problem they solve, the solution they provide or the service they offer. In doing so, people may even identify their customers or tell a story about what a customer can do as a result of working with you and relate it back to the problems they solve. This will allow people to associate a financial advisor with someone who can help them retire early so that they can play more golf, for example. C est quelque chose que M. Steve Lowell connait, et il était le conférencier au Déjeuner de reconnaissance des bénévoles le 16 juin dernier. Il y avait un nombre impressionnant de 26 bénévoles de la Section Ottawa Gatineau de la Société canadienne des directeurs d association (SCDA) à l occasion de cet excellent déjeuner organisé à l Hôtel et Club de golf Chateau Cartier. M. Lowell a dit que lorsqu une personne se présente à d autres dans une occasion semblable, elle dit habituellement quelque chose comme : «Bonjour, je m appelle Jean Leblanc et je suis courtier en hypothèques». Le problème, selon M. Lowell, c est qu annoncer votre titre ne permet pas vraiment à personne de savoir ce que vous faites concrètement. Il dit que vous devriez oublier le titre et parler un peu de vous lorsque vous vous présentez, pour que les gens se souviennent mieux de vous après. C est quelque chose que vous pouvez faire en créant une image mentale des problèmes que vous réglez, des solutions que vous fournissez ou des services que vous offrez. Ce faisant, vous pouvez même identifier vos clients, ou raconter une histoire à propos de ce qu un client peut faire en ayant travaillé avec vous, et ensuite faire le lien avec les problèmes que vous réglez. Ainsi, les gens pourront associer un «conseiller financier» à quelqu un qui peut les aider à prendre leur retraite plus rapidement pour pouvoir jouer plus souvent au golf, par exemple.
