63 Waterways in Wallonia Yvon Loyaerts, Director General, Walloon Directorate for Waterways and Mobility Policy, Namur, BELGIUM Wallonia is the Southern part of Belgium that is a federal kingdom at the heart of Western Europe. Its geographic position makes the Region a very important location for transport (persons and goods) and logistics whatever the way: roads, railways, air and waterways. More especially Wallonia takes advantage since centuries of the existence of major rivers crossing its territory: the Scheldt and the Meuse flowing downwards to the North Sea respectively through world harbours Antwerp and Rotterdam. The paper will show this positive location and explain how the network was developed and improved in the past. Major canals were built to link the rivers together and some major constructive works were achieved during the last decades as the boat lift of Strepy-Thieu and the inclined plan of Ronquieres, both being the world biggest of their categories. The presentation will also show how Wallonia intend to maintain its position by upgrading its waterways: its participation into the project Seine North, the upgrading to 2000 t of the Walloon backbone and the building of new 9000t locks near to Liege are some examples of this voluntary policy. Development of other activities as inland harbours (Liege is the third continental harbour in Europe), tourism facilities and so on will complete the presentation with one key conclusion: the integrated political approach through the coherence of the regional transport policy with environmental targets and economic growth is a major element for sustainable development and quality of life within Wallonia. Yvon LOYAERTS (1952) graduated in civil engineering from the Polytechnic School of the Brussels University (B). Nowadays he is Director General for Waterways and Mobility Policy within the Walloon Ministry. He is a member of several international institutions as the World Road Association (PIARC) and the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure (PIANC). He is also a lecturer for a Master Degree in Transport Management at the Brussels University. Previously he used to be in charge of the general road policy of Wallonia within the Walloon Road Directorate. He also chaired the Executive Board of the Conference of European Directors of Roads (CEDR) and the ITS euro-regional project CENTRICO in
