1 FR102 Study guide Unité 8 Déjà, encore/toujours : Déjà indicates that an action has already been completed. Ex : J ai fini. Déjà? Tu es rapide. Déjà is usually placed after the conjugated verb or before the past participle in the passé composé. Ex: Il a seulement quatre ans mais il sait déjà lire. Tu déjeunes avec nous? Non merci. J ai déjà déjeuné. Encore and toujours indicate the permanence of an object, a state, or an action. They are usually placed after the conjugated verb or before the past participle in the passé composé. Ex: Il y a encore du café? Oui, il en reste un peu. Tu es toujours étudiant à ton âge! The negation : ne plus : Ne plus indicates a rupture, a change of state or behavior. Ne is placed in front of the conjugated verb or auxiliary, while plus is placed after. Ex: Il y encore du coca? Non, il n y en a plus, nous avons tout bu. Il fume encore? Non, il ne fume plus. In informal speech, ne is left out. Ex: Je fume plus. Être en train de + infinitive: Être en train de + infinitive indicates that an action is unfolding at that very moment. Ex: Où sont les enfants? Ils sont en train de jouer dans leur chambre. Ce soir, je vais manger au restaurant. Demain, tu vas nager moins longtemps. La semaine prochaine, il/elle/on va prendre un jour de congé. Le mois prochain, nous allons partir au Canada. L année prochaine, vous allez étudier en France. Dans deux ans, ils/elles vont acheter une maison. Mercredi If you use the definite article le in front of a day of the week, you are expressing something habitual that always happens on that particular day. Ex: Vous faites de la notation? If you are refering to today, you will add a demonstrative adjective: ce, cet and cette.

To express that something is habitual or frequent, we use the definite articles le and la. Ex: Je travaille la nuit et j étudie le jour. (Refer Study guide Unité 4) Telling time : Ex : Quelle heure est-il? Il est deux heures. Une heure (pile -exactly) du matin (1 :00) Une heure cinq du matin (1 :05) Deux heures et quart de l après-midi (14 :15) Neuf heures et demie du soir (21 :30) Onze heures moins le quart du soir (22 :45) Note that for public services (transpotations, business, administrations, etc ), the 24 hour system is used. Douze heures Seize heures Vingt-quatre heures To indicate at what time something is taking place, add the preposition à. Ex: A quelle heure commence le film? À 10 heures To indicate the hours of opening of a store or any other place (business, administration, etc ), the preposition de à or de jusqu à are used. Ex: Vous ouvrez à quelle heure? De huit heures trente à douze heures et de quatorze heures trente jusqu à seize heures. Asking questions : There are three ways of asking questions. Rising intonation: In informal speech, you can ask a question by simply raising your voice at the end of the sentence. Ex: Vous êtes français? Hélène est française? Est-ce que: A common way of asking questions is to place est-ce que at the beginning of the sentence. Ex: Est-ce que vous êtes français? Est-ce que hélène est française? The inversion : To ask questions in a more formal way, you should use the inversion : the ver bis placed before the subject pronoun and a hyphen is added between the verb and the pronoun. Ex: Avez-vous compris?

4 Aimez-vous le rap? Êtes-vous francais? Hélène, est-elle française? Note that in the last example, you have to state the noun first and then invert the verb with the pronoun that corresponds to that noun (elle refers back to Hélène) The interrogative words: où, quand, comment, combien, pourquoi : There are also three ways of asking questions with the interrogative words où, quand, comment, combien, pourquoi with a rising intonation, with est-ce que, or with the inversion verb-subject pronoun. Rising intonation: In this case, in informal speech, the interrogative words can be placed at the beginning or at the end of the question. Ex: Comment il s appelle? Il s appelle comment? Tu vas où? Où tu vas? Est-ce que: You can also combine an interrogative word with est-ce que Ex: Où est-ce que vous êtes né? The inversion : If you use the inversion, you will need to add-t- between two vowels to ensure a smoother pronunciation. Ex: Comment s appelle-t-il? Pourquoi etudie-t-elle autant? In all cases, your voice will rise slightly on the last syllable if the question. The interrogative words: qui, que, qu : Qui is the interrogative word that refers to a person. Qui never becomes qu in front of a vowel. Ex: Qui est-ce? C est Céline, la sœur d Eric. Avec qui est-ce que tu sors ce soir? Avec Sacha et Irma When qui is the subject of the verb, it cannot be placed at the end of the question. Ex: Qui a telephone? Qui est-là? Que is the interrogative word that refers to a thing. It becomes qu in front of a vowel. Ex: Qu est-ce que vous prenez? Un café. Qu étudie-t-elle? L arabe. The interrogative adjectives : quel, quels, quelle, quelles : Interrogative adjectives agree with the noun that follow. Ex: Quel âge avez-vous? Quelle est votre formation? Quels sont vos projets?
