3 Learning Target I will understand the imperfect (imparfait), as evidenced in my forming it and using it to describe past actions.

4 Imperfect - Imparfait Describes ongoing or continuous actions or events in the past. ex. Je lavais ma voiture. Describes habitual or repeated actions or events in the past. ex. Ils arrivaient généralement à quatre heures. ex. J allais à l opéra le soir. Describes people, things,or a state of mind in the past. ex. J étais inquiète. The imperfect translate to I was, you were in English.

5 How to form the imparfait Take the nous form of any verb, except être. Drop the subject pronoun nous and the ons ending. The stem remains Add the imperfect endings to the stem and add the subject pronouns, noun, or subject. Imperfect endings: ais, ais, ait, ions, iez, aient

6 Imparfait Acronyms To learn the uses of the imparfait, use the acronym D.A.T.E.L.A.W: Description Age Time Emotions Location Actions (habitual, repeated) Weather - or - To learn the uses of the imparfait, use the acronym H.I.D.E: Habitual actions (used to + verb) Incomplete actions (was/were + ing form of verb) Descriptions in the past Emotions/feelings (most of the time)

8 Spell Change verb - Ger (manger, nager, voyager etc.) - Cer (commencer, placer, annoncer etc.)

9 Example: commencer to start Je commence Tu commences Il/elle/on commence Vous commencez Ils/elles commencent Nous commençons

10 Example: manger to eat Je mange Tu manges Il/elle/on mange Vous mangez Ils/elles mangent Nous mangeons

11 Stem changing verbs (boot verb) Verb ending in: - yer (payer, nettoyer etc.) - ier (étudier etc.) - eter (acheter) - é_er (préférer) - e_er (mener) - eler (appeler) These verbs have a special spelling on the nous form in the present tense, so be careful when using them in the imperfect
