DAAD funding: More than 110 million CFA F to train university lecturers on e-learning The University of Yaoundé I has hosted the first of a series of workshops to train university lecturers on e- learning; a DAAD funded project for the university of Duisburg-Essen and the United Nations University (Bonn) and three African universities. Le thème retenu pour cette année était: Diasporas et développement dans les relations euro-africaines. Le jeudi 16 juin a eu lieu à l esplanade du Ministère des Relations Extérieures une foire exposition des activités des différentes organisations de l Union Européenne présentes au Cameroun. Les visiteurs, provenant de diverses couches de la société civile, ont ainsi eu la possibilité de s informer entre autres sur le travail effectué par la Coopération allemande. Dans le «village allemand» on pouvait distinguer les stands de la GIZ, de l Institut Goethe, de la Friedrich Ebert Stiftung et du DAAD. Après l ouverture officielle des cérémonies marquée par des discours et des prestations musicales et de comédie avec une parade, les membres du gouvernement, l Ambassadeur de l Union Européenne et les ambassadeurs des pays européens au Cameroun ont visité les stands où attendaient déjà divers matériels d information, cadeaux et un personnel disponible à cet effet. Le Ministre des Relations Extérieures Henri Eyebe Ayissi reçoit un cadeau des mains de Mme Buchecker (DAAD) M. Philipp Rößler, Premier Secrétaire présente le village allemand aux personnalités. 2 Seite 2 New DAAD leading team The principal outcome of DAAD general assembly in Bonn on 23rd June is the election of new president and vice-president. For the second time in the history, the DAAD is going to be directed by a woman. The election of a new president and vice-president will reinforce the capacities of the DAAD leading team which is in constant change since last year. New President The psychology professor Margret Wintermantel becomes DAAD president after a long and rich career in the domain of German higher education. She studied psychology and journalism at the University of Mainz where she also got her doctorate in After working at the Universities of Heidelberg and Saarland, she was respectively vice-president of the University of Saarland, then vice-president and president of the German Rectors Conference till her election as DAAD president. With her rich experience and her best knowledge of German universities, Prof. Dr. Wintermantel will act as DAAD president as from January She will replace Prof. Dr. Sabine Kunst who left the DAAD in February 2011 after her appointment as minister in the Federal State of Brandenburg. New Vice-president Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee, president of the University of Gießen will take his function as DAAD vice-president in January next year. The linguistics professor who got his doctorate in 2004 is now 38 years old. He will replace Prof. Dr. Max Huber who will have been DAAD vice-president for 15 years. We congratulate them for their election and wish them all the best for their new responsibilities. Information Sessions in Douala and Bafoussam From 26th to 27th May the DAAD Information Centre Yaoundé organised in collaboration with the Goethe Institute Yaoundé a series of information sessions at the German learning centres in Douala und Bafoussam. The objective of these sessions on studying in Germany was to provide future students an overview of the conditions they have to fulfil to study in Germany. Each information started with presentations by Mrs. Djiango (Goethe Institute) and Mr. Chuépo (DAAD) on language and academic requirements for student visas. After that the students could ask questions en receive relevant information material. They could also get informed on Test DaF examination and DAAD programmes. We noticed that there is a real information need in those cities, especially in Douala where the hall of the German learning centre was full. We shall look at the opportunity of organising another session in a bigger space where we can also receive learners from other institutes of the city.

Deadline: 31st July Plus de millions pour promouvoir le e-learning à l université Dans le cadre de ses programmes pour l encadrement et la formation continue des anciens étudiants et boursiers d Allemagne, le DAAD a accordé un financement de euros pour un projet de formation et de renforcement des capacités des enseignants d universités dans l enseignement-apprentissage en ligne. Ce projet qui a été financé à la demande de l Université de Duisburg-Essen met en réseau l Université des Nations Unies (Bonn), les Universités Kenyatta (Kenya) et Cape-Town (Afrique du Sud) et Yaoundé I (Cameroun). Il est piloté au niveau du Cameroun par le professeur Mama Foupouagnigni, ancien boursier DAAD et ambassadeur scientifique de la Humboldt Foundation. Le premier workshop qui inaugure une série de quatre a été accueilli par l Université de Yaoundé I. 15 enseignants camerounais et 20 étudiants de l École Normale Supérieure ont ainsi eu l opportunité de travailler sous la conduite d experts venus des quatre coins du monde avec la possibilité de placer leurs données sur un serveur fourni à cet effet. L ouverture officielle du workshop de Yaoundé qui a eu lieu à la salle des actes de l Université de Yaoundé I a été présidée par le Professeur André-Marie Ntsobé, représentant personnel du Recteur empêché, assisté de Monsieur Philipp Rößler, Premier secrétaire de l Ambassade d Allemagne. Au cours de ladite cérémonie, les allocutions ont loué l excellente collaboration entre les autorités camerounaises et les autorités allemandes dans le domaine des échanges académiques. Ces rapports ont d ailleurs conduit à la signature de plusieurs protocoles d entente entre universités allemandes et camerounaises. DAAD Grants for Alumni Events Dans le même ordre d idées, les travaux de construction du Centre pour la Coopération Scientifique entre l Afrique et l Allemagne en sont à leur phase de clôture, pour ne citer que ces deux exemples. Le professeur Foupouagnigni a été félicité pour ses efforts constants d améliorer la qualité de l enseignement à travers de nouvelles méthodes de communication. Le professeur Ehlers quant à lui s est félicité de la tenue effective de ce workshop à Yaoundé et a réaffirmé le soutien permanent de son université dans ce processus. 4 Seite 4 Handing-over ceremony of technical material to measure CO2 Pollution in Cameroon Nouveaux délais de candidature dans les programmes séjours de recherche pour enseignants du supérieur et scientifiques expérimentés et réinvitation d anciens boursiers. Désormais il existe trois sessions de candidature par an: le 1er avril, le 1er octobre et le 1er janvier. Les dossiers doivent être déposés au moins trois mois avant le début du projet en Allemagne. Uni-assist: Les frais d étude de dossiers de uni-assist ont été revus à la hausse depuis le 1er mai Les nouveaux tarifs applicables sont les suivants: 68 euros pour la première candidature 15 euros pour chaque université supplémentaire Plus d informations sur: The National Advanced Polytechnics of Yaoundé received from the Association Afrisciences technical material to evaluate the CO2 pollution in Cameroon. The handingover ceremony was organised on Friday, 24 June in the House of German Cooperation in Yaoundé. It was organised in cooperation with the DAAD Information Centre Yaoundé and presided over by the Rector of the University of Yaoundé I Prof. Bouba Oumarou and the First Secretary of the German Embassy Mr. Philipp Rößler who acted as personal representative of the Ambassador. The captors have been designed and made by African researchers who are members of Afrisciences. Afrisciences is an initiative of highly qualified people of African Diaspora in the domains of science and technology who desire to contribute to the development of their countries of origin. Their will is to share their potential with the scientific community in their home countries and lead to better life conditions for all. Initiator of the project and general manager of the association is the Cameroonian university professor Christophe Bobda who lived for 17 years in Germany before moving to Arkansas in the United States where he is teaching Computer Sciences. During several DAAD funded teaching stays in Cameroon, Prof. Bobda noted that the CO2 pollution had reached a certain level and decided to take this problem seriously. Thanks to a programme of the GIZ (German Organisation for International Cooperation), he could realise the project of making air captors together with other members of Afrisciences. Prof. Bobda and Habib Momo ( Afrisciences ) noted that this product in its form is an unequalled creation in the scientific world because the material used in developed countries to measure CO2 pollution does not have the same form and use. After they had presented the activities and plans of their association for the future, the Rector of the University of Yaoundé I said, he was very grateful for the project and assure them the collaboration of his university as a partner. Prof. Tonye who represented the Polytechnics said that they will know how to make good use of the material. He also gave a student of the school the possibility to demonstrate how they intend to proceed when evaluating pollution in the cities of Cameroon. The turn is now given to Polytechnics Yaoundé to use the material and lead to the results expected. 5 Seite 5 Destination Technische Universität Cottbus Encadrement pour les nouveaux étudiants étrangers et pour les diplômés et alumni. Si plusieurs camerounais pensent spontanément à l équipe de football FC Energie quand il est question de la ville de Cottbus, la ville située au sud de Berlin a sans doute beaucoup plus à offrir: une jeune université technique dynamique et innovatrice qui abrite traditionnellement un nombre important d étudiants camerounais. Avec étudiants parmi lesquels on compte 950 étrangers, elle offre des formations dans des domaines variés tels que l environnement, l énergie, les matériaux, la construction et les technologies de l information et de la communication. Une caractéristique spécifique: les problèmes de notre siècle peuvent être traités dans un laboratoire à temps réel grâce à la situation géographique exceptionnelle de Cottbus. L internationalité fait partie des priorités de l Université de Cottbus. Dans la communauté estudiantine qui s internationalise davantage, le groupe camerounais vient en seconde place après la Chine. 8 filières sont actuellement offertes en langue anglaise. Une des filières préférées des étudiants camerounais est Environmental and Resource Management qui constitue d ailleurs un attrait majeur pour beaucoup d étrangers. Dans le souci d optimiser la préparation aux études supérieures pour les étudiants étrangers, un programme a été développé sous la coordination de la Hochschule Lausitz. C est le programme Brücke zum Studium. Il s agit d une offre de cours de langue pour le DSH et une introduction aux études dans la filière choisie, tout ceci gratuitement. Je pense que cette offre de la BTU représente une grande aide pour tous les étudiants étrangers qui souhaitent réussir dans l apprentissage de la langue et la préparation aux études. Renée (Cameroun) La TU de Cottbus n encadre pas seulement ses nouveaux étudiants, mais aussi ses anciens étudiants qui travaillent dans leurs pays d origine pour mettre en valeur leur potentiel et ainsi bâtir des rapports solides entre l Allemagne et l Étranger. L université soutient ainsi toute initiative qui concourt à conserver le contact avec elle comme par exemple la conférence organise en 2008 avec un financement du DAAD sur le theme: Risk assessment and management for environmental protection in sub-saharan Africa. Récemment encore dans le cadre des activités marquant le 20ème anniversaire de la TU de Cottbus, des alumni camerounais ont été invités à un workshop sur la mise sur pied de regroupements régionaux d alumni. Un développement plus récent de ces rapports c est la signature d une convention de partenariat avec l Université de Buea. 6 Seite 6 Theodor Berchem Prize for Outstanding Personalities in International Academic Cooperation The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) will award the Theodor Berchem Prize for Outstanding Personalities in International Academic Cooperation for the first time in With this prize, which bears the name of long-standing DAAD President Professor Theodor Berchem, DAAD seeks to honour personalities who have experienced and promoted the international and intercultural dimension of higher education in an outstanding manner. Tribute is to be paid to those persons who have made an exceptional contribution to bringing together students, scientists and scholars and (academic) cultures across borders, for example through a comprehensive integration of disciplines or the development of mutual understanding of cultures and / or nations. This contribution may have been made through the theoretical explanation and scholarly evaluation of international exchange and innovative projects which have developed an exemplary effect on international cooperation and understanding in the higher education sector. The prize is endowed with 10,000 euro. The prize-winner may freely dispose of the sum. The prize money is funded from donations made to DAAD. The prize will be reannounced every two years. Nominations for the prize may be made by members of higher education institutions and distinguished partner organisations in academic cooperation at home and abroad; selfmade nominations are not possible. Nominations should include a detailed description of the specific achievements of the person to be honoured. DAAD will award the prize at a public event, on the basis of the choice made by an international selection committee. Nominations should be sent to Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst e.v. They will come to Germany for a year to work alongside a host of their own choosing on a joint project dedicated to the exchange of knowledge, methods and techniques. The aim is to create a network in which German and foreign experts will work together on a sustainable, international basis to develop solutions to combat climate change and its global consequences. The fellowships are funded under the Federal Environment Ministry's (BMU) International Climate Protection Initiative. Provisions consist of a monthly fellowship, a lump sum for travel expenses, family allowances and a language course. The closing date for applications is 15 December For further information please visit Georg Forster Research Fellowships The Georg Forster Research Fellowships offered by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation allow excellent scholars and scientists from emerging economies and developing countries (excluding China and India) to spend an extended time of research (6-24 months) with a host and collaborative partner in Germany. Postdoctoral and experienced researchers, who work on a research project with relevance to development, are eligible to apply. Apart from this, there are no quotas for specific subjects or country of origin. Applicants select their academic host at a research institution in Germany themselves and agree on the research project. Provisions consist of a monthly fellowship, a lump sum for travel expenses, family allowances, a language course as well as extensive alumni sponsorship (i. e. a 12 months return fellowship).
