PhD Studentship, High-level vision, Bangor University, UK De : Charles Leek <pss034@bangor.ac.uk> Closing Date: March 4th 2013 Applications are invited for a three-year fully-funded PhD studentship in the School of Psychology, Bangor University, Bangor UK under the supervision of Professor Charles Leek. The studentship is available from October 1st 2013 (or as soon as possible thereafter). The studentship includes payment of UK / EU level tuition fees, a maintenance allowance of approximately  13,000 and an annual research allowance of  750. Established in 1963, the School of Psychology is one of the oldest schools of psychology in the UK. This year marks the 50 golden years of teaching, research and training in the field of psychology and neuroscience. In the latest Time league table (Times Good University Guide 2013) the School was ranked joint 2nd for Teaching (with Oxford) and joint 7th for Research Quality across the entire UK. The School offers a challenging and rewarding, environment for PhD study. The School is equipped with state-of-the-art research facilities in cognitive and clinical neuroscience including a 3T MRI scanner, high-density ERP, movement labs and a dedicated neuropsychology patient panel that maintains close links with local hospitals and neurology services for access to clinical populations. Project Description The goal of the PhD project will be to develop a series of experiments using eye tracking and ERP measures to study the time course of object recognition in human vision. The ability of the human visual system to perceive and represent the shapes of three-dimensional objects underpins much of our everyday activities. Current theories diverge in the claims they make about how this is accomplished, how object constancy is achieved, and how shape is represented. Recent work in our lab has begun to elucidate the structure and organisation of the representations that mediate object recognition using psychophysical (e.g., Leek et al., 2005 â JEP: HPP) and eye tracking methods (e.g., Leek et al., 2012 â Journal of Vision). For example, we have shown recently that eye tracking can be used to study the way in which the visual system acquires information about object shape during perception. A 4

key issue that remains to the explored concerns the time course involved in computing perceptual representations of shape, and how the speed of processing is modulated by stereo information. The project would combine eye tracking and ERP methodology. The proposed ERP studies will also be the first to explicitly examine this issue by directly contrasting standard flat screen two-dimensional (2D) image presentation and 3D image presentation using stereo displays. This is a vitally important consideration, and a potentially major limitation of previous work on visual recognition. More details of the lab and publications are available on the lab webpage: http://pages.bangor.ac.uk/~pss034/leeklab.htm International students are welcome to apply; however our studentships only cover fees at the UK/EU level. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed. Informal enquiries about the project should be directed to Professor Charles Leek, and enquiries about the application process to Shanti Shanker. How to apply Applications for this studentship will be considered until 4th March 2013. Applicants are expected to have a first or upper second-class honours degree or equivalent in Psychology, and we would normally expect applicants to have completed an appropriate Masters degree. A research interest in cognitive neuroscience, human vision and object recognition are essential. No prior experience with eye tracking or EEG is required. In addition to the filling the application form and submitting required documentation, please upload a copy of your CV and a brief statement of research interest for this studentship. http://www.bangor.ac.uk/psychology/postgraduate/50ann_psy13.php.en To apply please complete an online University postgraduate application form. Once completed, please confirm submission to s.shanker@bangor.ac.uk -- 5
