INTRODUCTION Grammaire-ama! 2 is a valuable resource package containing grammar structures that are usually studied by first year high school students. This resource is an excellent tool to help students in their study of French in conjunction with whatever program is used. In Grammaire-ama! 2, each grammar topic is explained in easy to understand English, and, when possible, similarities and differences between English and French are emphasized. Immediately following each explanation are practice exercises making use of basic vocabulary that students are familiar with. In addition, an answer key is provided at the end of the volume. Teachers and students will find Grammaire-ama! 2 to be a very useful resource in the French language classroom. 4
THE PASSÉ COMPOSÉ WITH ÊTRE When forming the passé composé in French, there are two auxiliary verbs to chose from: - AVOIR for transitive verbs (les verbes transitifs) - ÊTRE for intransitive verbs (les verbes intransitifs) Fortunately, the choice becomes easy since there are only about a dozen or so intransitive verbs. Try to learn them in pairs, with each having an opposite in meaning. Using the word ADVENT can be an easy way to remember these intransitive verbs: infinitive past participle infinitive past participle A - arriver (arrivé) - partir (parti) D - descendre (descendu) - monter (monté) V - venir (venu) - aller (allé) E - entrer (entré) - sortir (sorti) N - naître (né) - mourir (mort) T - tomber (tombé) - rester (resté) + retourner (retourné) + any compound of the above verbs: e.g. revenir, devenir, rentrer etc. Sample conjugation of an intransitive verb: ALLER je suis allé /allée nous sommes allés / allées tu es allé / allée vous êtes allé /allés /allée /allées il est allé ils sont allés elle est allée elles sont allées NOTE: a) the past participle must agree with the subject in gender and number as if it were an adjective. e.g. elles sont allées, ils sont allés b) each form has three meanings. e.g. je suis allé = I have gone, I went, I did go c) negative form: e.g. tu n es pas allé d) interrogative form: e.g. es-tu allé? 53
