Electricity Charging a capacitor at constant current 3 Experiments 3.1 Schematic diagram i + E The diagram is shown in the figure hereof. In the charge position (1), the current source generates a constant current i (adjustable) that charges the capacitor for a duration Δt. At the end of charging, the capacitor is discharged by placing the reversing switch in position (2), which creates a short circuit. 1 2 A A C B 3.2 Preliminary adjustment of the current The current is adjusted using the ammeter A. The capacitor selector switch is placed in position 0 (which is similar to replacing the capacitor with a conductor wire). The value selected is read on the ammeter; for example i = 0.1 ma for the first experiment. 3.3 Manual reading of voltages The device is designed to charge a capacitor for a duration that is sufficient for a group of two students to be able to take about a dozen measurements of the voltage U AB during this charge. It is thus recommended to select a capacitor with the highest capacitance (1000 µf) and a low charging current (the current source provides a minimum value of i = 0.1 ma that can be used). Under these conditions, the quantity of electricity accumulated on each armature during the charging duration is Q = i x Δt, which can also be written as Q = C x U AB, where U AB represents the final value of the charging voltage supplied by the current source, about 10 V. The charging time is: Δt = C x U AB / i. Δt = 100 s numerically. During this time, the students, using a stopwatch and a voltmeter connected to points A and B, can easily note down on the fly the value of the voltage displayed by the voltmeter (range 20 V), every 10 s. With the same capacitor and a current of 0.2 ma, the duration of the experiment will be approximately 50 s, which will make it possible to enter 10 results every 5 s. With a capacitor of 220 µf and a current of 0.1 ma, the duration of the experiment is only 22 s: only 4 or 5 measurements can be made (more difficult as the variation in the voltage is now much quicker). In all cases, the students are able to show that the curve U AB = f(t) plotted on a graph paper is a straight line. Its slope ΔU AB / Δt gives the capacitance of the capacitor (to compare with the value displayed on the box). C = Δ u i / AB Δ t ENGLISH 8
Electricity Charging a capacitor at constant current 3.4 Computerized entry of the voltage U AB The charging time here is not as important as it was for a manual experiment. The choice of the capacitor and the charging current is left to the student who may perform multiple comparisons between the charging currents and capacitance values of the capacitors. The synchro output triggers the acquisition system 0.1 s before the start of the charge or discharge of the capacitor. Thus, the beginning of the phenomenon can be systematically viewed even if its duration is very short. To use this function, it is recommended that the synchro output terminals located at the back of the box be connected to the synchro sockets of the ESAO console. For a study using Généris, the start of acquisition by external synchro mode must be selected. On the recording above (ordinates in µa), the charging current i = 0.5 ma was entered at the same time as the voltage U AB detected at the terminals of the 1000 µf capacitor. ENGLISH 9
Electricity Charging a capacitor at constant current After modelling the voltage detected (see below: the ordinates are expressed in volts), the straight line obtained has a slope of: k = ΔU AB / Δt of 0.489 V.s -1. This result leads to the experimental value of the capacitance of the capacitor used. The expression C = Δ u i / Δ gives C = 5.10 t -4 / 0.484 = 1.02.10-3 F i.e. AB 1020 µf. The relative difference with the displayed value of 1000 µf is 2 %. Note: It is not uncommon to find a significant difference between the measured value and the displayed value of a capacitor: the tolerance is often 5 to 10 %. This difference is particularly appreciable in the case of an electrolytic capacitor (which is not the case for the device presented). ENGLISH 10
Electricity Charging a capacitor at constant current A systematic study of 4 usable capacitances with variable charging currents helps establish comparisons like the ones shown above: a 1000 µf capacitance is charged by a current i = 0.5 ma then by 1.5 ma. In each case, the curve U C (t) is a straight line passing through the origin: the charging is that much faster as the charging current is greater (about three times here). 4 After-Sales Service This material is under a two year warranty and should be returned to our stores in the event of any defects.
