6 d e s i g n Mats Theselius Mats Theselius is one of Sweden's best known and most controversial designers. A popular media figure, he has attracted a vast amount of attention and makes skilful use of the publicity bestowed on his activities. His relationship with his time has a dual aspect: while he is a typical product of the contemporary scene, he has also played a key part in shaping its ideas. Theselius has unique status in Sweden, as the first furniture designer to abandon the designer's traditional role and happily accept the mingling of genres which is a natural and unavoidable consequence of the information society. He is a kind of digital hermit who doesn't seem to mind what he is doing: attending a cocktail party, picking wild mushrooms or making headline news. The furniture of Mats Theselius takes command of the space in which it stands. Instead of surrendering to the existing environment, it boldly asserts its name and identity. It is proud and unashamed, refusing to play the conventional game. The furniture has a narrative aspect, but not in the sense of trying to tell a complete story the sign we see is something we can read and understand, but only as a beginning, an initial stimulus. 8 d e s i g n Mats Theselius Mats Theselius est l'un des plus réputés et controversés designers suédois. Figure médiatique populaire, il a souvent été au centre de toutes les attentions et a su habilement tirer parti de la publicité qu'il a suscité au profit de ses activités. La relation qu'il entretient avec son époque a un double aspect: alors qu'il est le produit type de la scène contemporaine, il est aussi une pièce maîtresse de sa conception. Theselius a un statut unique en Suède. C'est le premier designer de mobilier a abandonné le côté traditionnel pour se tourner vers le mélange des genre. Sorte d'hermite moderne, il ne semble pas se préoccuper de ce qu'il fait : qu'il organise un cocktail, choisisse un champignon sauvage, ou fasse la une des journaux. Le mobilier créé par Mats Theselius s'approprie l'espace dans lequel il s'inscrit. Au lieu de se fondre dans l'environnement existant, l'objet impose avec vigueur son identité. Attitude fière et affirmée, Mats Theselius refuse les règles d'un jeu conventionnel. Le mobilier raconte une histoire, mais pas au sens littéral. Il nous offre des indices, nous stimule afin que nous appréhendions, le commencement de ce qu'il est. As a result, many am particularly sensitive to natural light and the environment in each architectural project, he says. In my country, Sweden, there is very little residences in the country as well as in the city are designed to let in as much exterior light as possible. I grew up with that as an essential notion. Many Swedish architectural agencies have an office dedicated exclusively to ecology, and staff members who work on this aspect from the start of every project. They are responsible for production and sustainability of materials. And not just solar panels placed on a roof at the end of a project! In addition, I think that the Swedes are particularly attached to the quality of life their habitats offer. For example, I had the opportunity to design some offices in France and they made it clear that it didn t matter if the offices were pleasant or conducive to making the employees want to work! In Sweden, the mentality is different, a work space (like a home) should be agreeable, well-lit, and comfortable, so that everyone feels good, like at home, or even better than at home! Visitor s centre for Lund s cathedral I work a lot with wood, using different innovative techniques, especially for prefabricated projects, such as the grange in Charters. I am currently working on two residential projects in collaboration with Modulhusene, a Swedish manufacturer of modular buildings. One is a student residence in Compiègne and the other low-cost housing in Le Havre. Both projects are classified HQE (High Quality Environmental), for the efficiency of their design using prefabricated wooden frames, as well as for their high level of energy efficiency. In addition, they were constructed with very modest budgets and the building process of two to three months was exceptionally short. J e suis particulièrement sensible à la lumière naturelle et à l environnement dans chaque projet architectural. Dans mon pays, la Suède, il y a très peu de lumière, particulièrement dans les régions du Grand Nord. Aussi les lieux de vie à la campagne comme à la ville sont-ils souvent pensés pour faire entrer un maximum de lumière extérieure. J ai grandi avec ces notions essentielles. En Suède, on ne cherche pas à se cacher, à préserver pudiquement l intimité. A l intérieur, tout est conçu pour profiter de l extérieur. La notion de rideaux aux fenêtres n existe quasiment pas! Même dans les cafés, les restaurants, les Suédois ont tendance à installer systématiquement des baies vitrées pour profiter des arbres de la rue, de la vue vers le ciel.. L écologie est extrèmement développée en Suède. Beaucoup d agences d architecture suédoises intègrent au sein de leur équipe un bureau exclusivement consacré à l écologie depuis les fondements d un projet. Ce dernier a en charge l étude des chaînes de production, de la traçabilité des matériaux. Pas uniquement du panneau solaire posé en fin de chantier sur un toit! D autre part, je pense que les Suédois sont davantage attachés à la qualité de vie d un habitat. Par exemple, j ai eu l occasion de réaliser des bureaux en France et l on m a fait comprendre qu il ne fallait pas que le lieu soit trop bien, de crainte que les employés n aient plus envie de travailler! En Suède, la mentalité est différente, un lieu de travail (et de vie) doit être très agréable, lumineux, sympa, pour que tout le monde se sente bien, comme à la maison, voire mieux qu à la maison!. Je travaille beaucoup avec le bois en utilisant différentes techniques innovantes, en particulier pour des chantiers de préfabriqués, comme la grange à Chartres. Actuellement, j ai deux projets de logements en cours réalisés en association avec Modulhusene, un fabricant de bâtiments modulaires en bois. Il s agit d une résidence pour étudiants située à Compiègne et des logements sociaux au Havre. Ces deux projets sont classés HQE (Haute Qualité Environnementale), entre autres pour l efficacité de leur réalisation par préfabrication en ossature bois, ainsi que pour leur très haute performance énergétique. De plus, ils sont construits avec des budgets très modiques et la durée des chantiers de 2 3 mois est exceptionnellement courte. Les bâtiments mêmes sont montés sur place en une semaine! WHIRLPOOL THE RANGE The Range is a stovetop and oven combination with a removable range top. The base of the system houses the conventional oven and three small burners. The removable range top is equipped with a restaurant style burner powerful enough for efficient wok cooking. Mobility is the focus of this design. 22 a r t Charlotte Madézo E X H I B I T I O N Galerie Camaieu Marina - Marigot - St Martin Charlotte Madézo est née en 1962 à Quimper. Dans une tentative de conciliation entre ascendance de marins et formation d'ingénieur agronome, Charlotte en appelle à la terre et à l'eau. Naissent des personnages dont les préoccupations utilitaires (jardinier au potager) ou ludiques (baigneuses à la plage et scènes cafés) prennent d'emblée un caractère onirique, une envolée surréaliste. Décollage assuré. Couleurs, formes et matières, traitées dans des raccourcis inattendus proposent un monde imaginaire libéré des contraintes que nous imposent les poids des êtres, le classement des espèces, notre habitude de l'espace et du temps. Une recherche alliant le collage, l'encre, l'acrylique, la gravure permet cette évasion dans une autre dimension : sérénité et jubilation. Voyage intérieur qui découvre soudain la libre dégaine des figures africaines. De l'eau à la terre, du bleu de noroît à l'ocre latérite. L embarcadère 2 In a nod to her long family heritage of sailors, and her own training as an agricultural engineer, artist Charlotte Madézo pulls elements of the earth and the sea into her tableaux. The elongated figures in her paintings are based on everyday occupations (gardeners or fishermen) or leisure activities (swimmers at the beach or café scenes). Her work has a dreamlike ambiance, almost on the verge of surrealism. Ready to take off unexpectedly. Throughout, Charlotte remains faithful to her ancestors, those who brought back hidden treasures from the bottom of the sea, from Douarnenez Bay to the shores of Mauritania.
