Maybe; New Ringer? YES! My first time seeing French Ring was on the weekend of March 9, 2012 in St. Albert, Alberta. Seeing dogs and handlers of different levels perform bite work exercises with the decoy I was very impressed with the obedience of the dogs, and the camaraderie of the handlers. As a newcomer, I could not have been made to feel more welcome. FRENCH RING POUR LE SPORT/ FOR THE SPORT! Often criticized wrongly because of the biting exercises similar to gratuitous violence, French Ring is a wonderful discipline requiring technical perfection and always spectacular. More than any other of the canine disciplines, Ring, an elitist discipline par excellence, can bring glory! Has it not already its living legends? Debondue, Cheyenne, Villan, Jacopit, Topgun. The spectators are not wrong! The Ring s public knows what is beautiful to see, they greet with a clamour the technical moves when they are close to perfect They also know compassion! When the dog, ordered a few tenths of a second too late to stop, bites on l attaque arrêtée, when he forgets to defend his master or refuses to go out on the send away a murmur is heard from the stands. During one of the group conversations, I learned the sport was very technical and the decoy plays an important roll in the proper training of the dog. The decoy needs to use proper techniques to ensure safety for themselves, and for the dogs. I was also informed that the more experienced the decoy is in proper technique, the more valuable he will be to the training of a trial or competition dog. I was told that if I had any questions make sure that I ask. So I asked if I could learn the functions of the decoy. Little did I know that meant right now! I was able to convince Tamara to wait until next day. I was still nervous of getting a bite from the dog. Not a problem whenever your ready, she said. That gave me the night to psyche myself for the coming event. (continued page 3) The Ringueurs as a connoisseurs are able to vibrate, explode for a perfect technical movement, encouraging the competitors with great blows of applause and horns, in a stadium where the atmosphere is sometimes comparable to a soccer final. This is also the charm of this discipline: excessive, exaggerated at times. (continued on page 2)! PAGE 1

2 But excess is certainly part of this sport of astonishing technicality that does not forgive. Here everything is pushed to excess, starting with the quest for perfection itself! From the outset, those who practice this discipline are engaged in a genuine quest for performance. Ring is the art of sowing the wind, reaping the whirlwind and calming the elements at any time. Because the dog is primarily a dog under control: control in what is most extreme in the dog s intense pleasure to bite. Between the face attack and l attaque arrêtée, it says it all. The dog is able to be inordinately courageous, incisive, aggressive, decisive, and the next moment, in the same movement, the same approach to within a meter of its target, a few hundredths of a second of impact, even at the height of his motivation, stopped, cut short in its tracks. The splendor of the Ring lies in the juxtaposition of these two images. In the efficiency of decision, when the dog takes the cloth at full face, and the prohibition of any bite after the cessation order. The Ring dog is up to the challenge. It must be physical, fast, voluntary, sporting, decisive, courageous but also rigorous, balanced, able to dominate and to respond to a quarter second. In this methodical discipline, rigorous sometimes to the extreme, almost military, every detail is important. Hence the allure of rigid handlers, as at attention. Admittedly, the Regulations do not forgive! Any gesture, any sign can be interpreted as an additional command and cost points. Regulations of Ring are a real corset. Welcome to the passion of Ring! Ce texte n'est pas écrit pour dire que le ring est la seule discipline qui vaille, mais pour dire l'amour du ring et ce que nous aimons tant dans cette discipline. C'est un peu long mais très beau...! Souvent décrié à cause des exercices de mordant assimilés, à tort, à une violence gratuite, le Ring reste une merveilleuse discipline technique, perfectionniste et toujours très spectaculaire.! Plus que toutes les autres disciplines canines, le Ring, discipline élitiste par excellence, peut apporter la gloire! N a-t-il pas déjà ses légendes vivantes? Debondue, Cheyenne, Villian, Jacopit, Topgun. Et les spectateurs ne s y trompent pas! Le public de Ring sait voir ce qui est beau, saluer d une clameur les gestes techniques quand ils frôlent la perfection. Il sait également faire preuve de compassion!! Quand le chien commandé quelques dixièmes de secondes trop tard mord l attaque arrêtée, quand il oublie de défendre son maître, refuse d effectuer son «en avant»..un murmure parcours les tribunes.! Les Ringueurs sont des connaisseurs capable de vibrer, d exploser pour un geste technique parfait, d encourager les concurrents à grands coups d applaudissements et de trompes, dans un stade dont l ambiance est parfois comparable à celle d une finale de football. Tel est aussi le charme de cette discipline : excessif, démesuré parfois. Mais la démesure fait certainement partie de ce sport d une étonnante technicité qui ne pardonne rien. Ici, tout est poussé à l excès, à commencer par la quête de la perfection elle-même! D emblée, celui qui pratique cette discipline s engage dans une véritable quête de la performance. Car le chien y est avant tout un chien maîtrisé : maîtrisé dans ce qu il y a de plus extrême, dans son intense plaisir de mordre. Entre l attaque de face et l attaque arrêtée, tout est dit. Le chien est capable d être démesurément courageux, incisif,agressif, décisif et, l instant d après, dans le même mouvement, la même démarche, à moins d un mètre de sa cible, à quelques centièmes de secondes de l impact, au comble même de sa motivation, arrêté, stoppé, brisé net dans son élan. La splendeur du ring réside dans la juxtaposition de ces deux images. Dans l efficacité de la prise, quand le chien donne dans la toile à pleine gueule..et dans l interdiction du moindre coup de dent après l ordre de cessation. Le chien de Ring est fait pour le challenge. Il doit être physique, rapide, volontaire, sportif, décisif, courageux mais également rigoureux, équilibré, capable de se dominer et de réagir au quart de seconde. Dans cette discipline méthodique, rigoureuse parfois à l extrême, presque militaire, chaque détail à son importance. D où cette allure rigide des conducteurs, comme au garde à vous. Il faut reconnaître que le règlement ne pardonne rien! le moindre geste, le moindre signe peut être interprété comme un commandement supplémentaire et coûter des points. Le règlement de Ring est un véritable corset. (Continued from Page 1) Next day, as promised Tamara insured that I was in the suit and learning decoy movement and responsibilities. The suit was heavy, hot, and hard to move around in. When it came my turn to participate, I was nervous. The first exercise was the flee attach. I thought to myself, perfect, I don t have to watch the dog come running full speed at me, with it s mouth wide open. The dog brought me to the floor, and I came through the exercise unharmed. We learned other movements for methods of positioning the dog where we required them for the bite exercises. I truly enjoyed participating as the decoy. Look forward to learning and participating as much as possible in this sport of French Ring. Would like to thank all the people who I have met thus far. For their warm welcome, knowledge, and their dogs they have willingly shared. 4 2012 CRA CHAMPIONSHIPS - OTTAWA, CANADA Top L: Malinger s High Velocity (Indi) Top R: Gembler Sakra Beskby (Clyde) Bottom: Gypsy du Domaine des Esclaireurs The Beautiful Ottawa Valley was host to the 2012 CRA Championships which had attendees from across Canada and beyond. There were fifteen entries (3 Brevet; 7 Ring I; 3 Ring II; and 2 Ring III) that went to compete overseen by French Judge Camille Tisserand and Decoys Daniel Lybbert and Jason Fox. At the end of the trial there were some familiar successes as well as a new champion. John Bayreuther and Perro Capo de Lescaut successfully defended their Ring III Grand Championship for a third straight year and captured the Ring III Canada Cup. Geoff Empey and J Sasha van Arek also successfully defended their Ring II Grand Championship and captured the Ring II Canada Cup. A new champion in Ring I saw Ryan Venables and Malinger s High Velocity (Indi) claim the Ring I Grand Championship and Ring I Canada Cup. Tammy St. Louis and Villan de la Forge walked away with top Brevet honours. The weekend was a resounding success, and a large thanks goes out to Geoff Empey for organizing and hosting this tremendous event. 5 CHAMPIONNATS CANADIENS ET COUPE CANADA OTTAWA, CANADA La be%e va%ée de l'outaouais était l'hôte des Championnats 2012 de l'acrf qui a attiré des participants de partout au Canada et au-delà. Il y avait quinze entrées (3 Brevet; 7 Ring I; 3Ring II, et 2 Ring III) qui se sont présentés afin d'être évalués par le juge Français Camille Tisserand et des hommes-assistant Daniel Lybbert et Jason Fox. À la fin de la journée, il y avait deux chiens connus qui ont répété leurs exploits de l'an passé ainsi que d'un nouveau champion. lorsque Ryan Venables et Malinger s High Velocity (Indi) se sont emparé du Championnat Canadien ainsi que la Coupe Canada dans cette catégorie. Tammy St-Louis et Villan de la Forge sont repartis avec les grands honneurs du Brevet. Le week-end a été un succès retentissant, et un grand merci à Geoff Empey pour avoir organisé et accueillir ce formidable événement. John Bayreuther et Perro Capo de Lescaut ont défendu avec succès leur championnat Ring III pour une troisième année consécutive et ont capturé la Coupe Canada dans la catégorie Ring III. Geoff Empey et J'Sasha van Arek ont également défendu avec succès leur championnat Ring II et capturé le Ring II de la Coupe Canada. Congrats to them! Your BOD is working hard for you and has recently implemented new changes to fees as well as trial policy and procedures.
