Fruit, Vegetable and Cereal Science and Biotechnology primarily wishes to examine the following in fruits, vegetables and cereals: 1) In vitro propagation (micropropagation, somatic embryogenesis, tissue culture, bioreactor system production), tissue culture; 2) Mycorrhizal symbioses (and effects on plant physiology, productivity, reproduction and disease resistance); 3) Cultural practices (greenhouse growth, hydroponics, aeroponics, organic farming); 4) Physiology, genetics, molecular biology, structural botany (integrated, pure and applied); 5) Pathology; 6) Phytochemistry, organic and inorganic biochemistry; 7) Storage of genetic material (cold-storage or cryopreservation) and germplasm collections (in vitro and in situ); 8) Novel techniques for analysis (genetic, biochemical, biophysical). For publication in Fruit, Vegetable and Cereal Science and Biotechnology the research must provide a highly significant new contribution to our understanding of fruit, vegetable and cereal crops (temperate, subtropical or tropical) and must generally be supported by a combination of either: physiological, biochemical, genetic or molecular analyses. 4 The Guest Editor Dr. Niéyidouba Lamien, née en 1965, est Ingénieur des Eaux et Forêts et titulaire d un Doctorat Unique en biologie et écologie végétale. Il travaille depuis 1992 au Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique et Technologique (CNRST; du Burkina Faso et plus précisément dans le Département Productions Forestières de son Institut de l Environnement et de Recherches Agricoles (INERA; Il est présentement le Directeur Régional du Centre Régional de Recherches Environnementales et Agricoles pour la partie centrale du pays qui est une structure décentralisée de l INERA. Il consacre l essentiel de ses travaux scientifiques sur les Produits Forestiers Non Ligneux. C est à ce titre qu il a animé le projet de recherche sur les fruitiers sauvages de 2002 à 2006 qui a favorisé la tenue de l atelier dont les meilleures communications font l objet de ce numéro spécial. Dr Lamien est aussi Président du groupe de travail sur les Espèces Ligneuse Alimentaires (ELA) du programme de gestion durable des ressources génétiques forestières (RGF) pour l Afrique au sud du Sahara (SAFORGEN) de Bioversity International ( Dr. Niéyidouba Lamien, born in 1965, is engineer in forestry and has a PhD in Plant Biology and Ecology. He is working since 1992 at the national research center of Burkina Faso referred as Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique et Technologique (CNRST; and specifically at the Forestry department of its Institute in charge of agricultural and environmental researches referred as Institut de l Environnement et de Recherches Agricoles (INERA; Dr Lamien is presently the regional Director of INERA for the central part of Burkina Faso. His research activities are focused on Non Timber Forest Products. It s in this context he led a research group on local fruits tree species of Burkina Faso from 2002 to 2006 which favored the organization of the workshop and the publication of the present special issue. Dr Lamien is presently the Chairman of the Food Tree Species working group of the Sub-Saharan Africa Forest Genetic Resources (SAFORGEN) program of Bioversity International (

5 Prologue and abstract of the workshop/résumé de l atelie In English Local fruit and other food tree species have a considerable potential for: (i) solving the problem of hidden hunger which is the deficiency of essential micro nutrients and energy in the rural population diets; (ii) providing vulnerable groups which are women, men without lands and children with money; (iii) offering environmental services for the whole community. These neglected plants species are not receiving sufficient attention from producers, development service, scientists, private sector, decision makers and donors. Aware of the problem, the national research center of Burkina Faso referred as «Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique et Technologique (CNRST)» and the International Research Center for Development (IRDC) of Canada agreed to support a research project on local fruit tree species in Burkina Faso in order to contribute for the better valuing of this natural resource. In addition to this study implemented in Burkina Faso, IRDC has supported other research projects on agroforestry technologies and parklands biodiversity in Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Togo in collaboration with the World Agroforestry Center (WAC). The European Commission has also supported a research project referred as «Sahelian Fruits » which has been implemented in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. The WAC started a domestication program of local fruit tree species few years ago in central and western Africa. A working group on Food Tree Species exists for the SAFORGEN network which is working to establish contact between scientists working on the field. There is therefore critical research results accumulated on local fruit species and networking system which needs to be shared with scientific community, development services, NGOs, and private sector in order to identify gaps to be filled. CNRST and IRDC have been supported in their initiative by the NGO Tree-Aid, the Ministry in charge of environment and his partners UNDP and FAO at the national level and Bioversity International at the regional level. That lead to the organization of the workshop on 23 to 26 February 2010 at Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso on the topic: Regional workshop on the Potential role of local fruit tree and other food tree species for nutrition, poverty alleviation and biodiversity conservation in Sub-Saharan Africa: factors to consider. The general objective was to alleviate food insecurity and poverty in Africa by using natural resources. The specific objectives were: 1. To assess the state of art in research on local fruit tree and other food tree species in Sub-Saharan Africa during the last ten years; 2. To share the experience of producers in the development of their business plans on the exploitation of local plants to satisfy local markets; 3. To foster discussion between the different actors in local fruits exploitation; 4. To sensitize decision makers, media and stakeholders on the utilization of the local biodiversity as a strategy for food security; 5. To publish the proceeding of the workshop in a special issue of a journal; 6. To make a CD on the papers and the output of the discussions; 7. To organize exhibition of products derived from local fruits. With regard to these objectives, the workshop was organized around 4 scientific themes which were: (i) State of the resource; (ii) Domestication and biodiversity conservation; (iii) Nutritional and therapeutic potential; (iv) Post harvest, food technologies and market development. A total of 61 persons from 15 African and European countries have attended the workshop and presented 41 papers. Proving the importance of the workshop for the decision makers of Burkina Faso, the opening ceremony was chaired by the Minister in charge of environment. He was assisted by the general secretaries of the Ministry in charge of research and the national research center. The workshop consisted of 4 sessions: - Session 1: oral presentation of papers; - Session 2: working groups; - Session 3: exhibition of products processed from local fruits; - Session 4: information on the Food Tree Species working group of the SAFORGEN s network. Forty-one papers were presented at the session 1 in French and English. The present special issue contains the French papers which were peer reviewed by 3 independent scientists. For the session 2, two working group discussed on two themes: (1) State of the resource and domestication and (2) Nutrition, Processing technologies, politic and markets. Taking into account advances and gaps identified during the session 1, each group has to identify two top themes for proposals to be submitted to donors. 6 and the strategy of marketing of the local products are the four top themes identified for proposals. Ten societies which are processing local fruits have attended the session 3 with various products such as oils, jus, ice creams, croquettes processed from local fruit. Among the products listed, ice creams from six different local fruits (shea, jujube, Baobab, Detarium, Balanites and Sclerocarya) were the most appreciated by the participants because these various ice creams have been served as desert during the workshop diners. Session 4 consisted of informing on the existence of the Food Tree Species working group of the SAFORGEN network and the activities being implemented. It has been the opportunity of all the participants to register for the membership of this working group. For dissemination of the outputs of the workshop two journals Global Science Books, Ltd., UK and New Forest were contacted for the publication the best papers in French and English. En Français Les fruitiers locaux et autres espèces ligneuses alimentaires possèdent un potentiel considérable pour: (i) résoudre le problème de la «faim cachée» qu est le déficit en micronutriments essentiels et en énergie dans le régime alimentaire des populations en milieu rural, (ii) procurer de l argent aux groupes vulnérables que sont les femmes, les hommes sans terres et les enfants et (iii) offrir des services environnementaux à la communauté entière. Ces espèces de plantes, quelque peu négligées, ne bénéficient pas suffisamment d attention à la hauteur de leur potentiel de la part des différents acteurs que sont les producteurs, les services de développement, les opérateurs économiques, les chercheurs, les décideurs politiques et les donateurs. Conscients de cette situation, le Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique et Technologique (CNRST) du Burkina Faso et le Centre de Recherche pour le Développement International (CRDI) du Canada ont convenu d un accord de recherche sur les fruitiers sauvages au Burkina Faso pour contribuer à une meilleure valorisation de cette ressource. En plus de cette étude conduite au Burkina Faso, le CRDI a supporté une série de projets traitant des technologies agroforestières et de la biodiversité au Burkina Faso, au Mali et au Niger, en partenariat avec World Agroforestry Center (WAC) et singulièrement au Togo. Outre le CRDI, la Commission Européenne a financé un projet de recherche intitulé «Sahelian Fruits » qui a été conduit au Burkina Faso, au Mali et au Niger. Le WAC a entrepris il y a quelques années un programme de domestication de quelques fruitiers sauvages en Afrique de l ouest et du centre. Il existe un groupe de travail sur les Espèces Ligneuses Alimentaires (ELA) du réseau SAFORGEN qui travaille à mettre en contact les chercheurs du domaine. Il y avait donc une masse considérable de résultats de recherche accumulée sur les fruitiers sauvages et un système de réseautage qui méritaient d être partagés avec la communauté scientifique, les services de développement, les ONGs, le secteur privé et les organisations paysannes en vue de faire le point sur les avancées et dégager des perspectives de valorisation de cette importante ressource. Le CNRST et le CRDI ont été accompagnés dans leur initiative par l ONG Tree-Aid, le Ministère de l Environnement et du Cadre de Vie et ses partenaires financiers que sont le PNUD et la FAO au niveau national et Bioversity International au niveau régional. C est ainsi que l atelier s est tenu du 23 au 26 février 2009 au Splendid Hôtel à Ouagadougou au Burkina Faso sous le thème: «Rôle potentiel des fruitiers locaux et autres espèces ligneuses dans l alimentation, l allègement de la pauvreté et la conservation de la biodiversité en Afrique Sub-saharienne: les facteurs à considérer». L objectif général était de contribuer à la lutte contre l insécurité alimentaire et la pauvreté en Afrique par l utilisation des ressources naturelles. De façon spécifique, il s agissait de: 1. Faire un état des lieux des résultats des recherches effectuées sur les fruitiers sauvages, les plantes mineures ou menacées de disparition, les plantes à intérêt économique mis sous utilisées; 2. Partager les leçons des expériences d organisation communautaire dans l élaboration des plans de développement de micro entreprises exploitants les ressources végétales locales pour satisfaire le marché local; 3. Permettre aux collecteurs et vendeurs de produits sauvages, aux organisations de producteurs, aux praticiens du secteur agro-alimentaire (petites unités de transformation et aux hôteliers/restaurateurs) de discuter avec les scientifiques des résultats de recherche (pertinence, utilisation et stratégie de promotion); 4. Sensibiliser les décideurs politiques, les médias et le grand public sur l utilisation durable de la biodiversité locale comme élément de stratégie pour la sécurité alimentaire; 5. Publier les actes de l atelier soit sous la forme d un numéro spécial d un journal scientifique soit sous la forme d un livre; 6. Concevoir et réaliser un CD sur les communications et les points saillants des échanges de l atelier; 7. Organiser une exposition des produits parallèlement à l atelier. Au regard de ces objectifs, l atelier s est focalisé sur les quatre (4) thèmes suivants: (i) Etat de la ressource; (ii) domestication et conservation de la biodiversité, (iii) Potentialités nutritionnelles et thérapeutiques, (iv) Technologies post récolte et développement de marchés. Au total 61 participants provenant de quinze pays africains et européens ont répondu à l invitation pour faire part de leurs expériences. La cérémonie d ouverture a été présidée par Monsieur le Ministre de l Environnement et du Cadre de Vie assisté des Secrétaires Généraux (SG) du Ministère des Enseignements Secondaire, Supérieur et de la Recherche Scientifique et du CNRST témoignant ainsi l importance que les décideurs politiques accordent à ce sujet.

7 L atelier a consisté en 4 sessions: - Session 1: présentations de communications; - Session 2: travaux de groupes; - Session 3: exposition de produits forestiers non-ligneux ou de leurs produits de transformation; - Session 4: information sur le groupe de travail sur les ELA du réseau SAFORGEN. La session 1 a été animée par 41 communications en français et en anglais. Le présent numéro spécial traite des communications françaises qui ont été acceptées après révision par 3 scientifiques indépendants. Pour la session 2, ce sont deux groupes de travail qui ont réfléchi sur: (1) Etat des ressources et domestication et (2) Nutrition, technologies de transformation, politique et marché des produits de fruitiers sauvages. Tirant leçons des acquis et insuffisances à travers les communications, les groupes de travail ont eu pour mandat d identifier chacun 2 thèmes hautement prioritaires pouvant faire l objet de proposition de recherche à soumettre à des bailleurs. Ainsi, les thématiques suivantes ont été identifiées pour faire l objet de propositions de recherche: 1- Gestion de la ressource (inventaire, collecte, manipulation, conservation); 2- Amélioration génétique (biologie de reproduction, sélection et manipulation); 3- Valeurs nutritionnelle et pharmacologique des PFNL; 4- Valorisation et stratégie de commercialisation des produits locaux. La session 3 a vu la participation d une dizaine de sociétés de transformation des fruits sauvages qui ont présenté une gamme très variée de produits. De tous ces produits c est les crèmes glacées faites à partir de six fruits sauvages (Karité, Baobab, Jujubier, Prunier d Afrique, Détarium et Balanites) qui ont retenu l attention des participants parce qu elles ont servi de déserts lors des déjeuners de l atelier. La session 4 a consisté en une information sur l existence du groupe de travail sur les ELA du réseau SAFORGEN et sur les activités en cours et à venir. Cela a suscité l adhésion de tous les participants au groupe de travail sur les ELA. Pour la dissémination des résultats de l atelier, l ensemble des communications a été gravé sur un CD et distribué aux participants à la fin de l atelier. Un accord a été trouvé avec les journaux «Global Science Books, Ltd., UK» et «New Forest» pour publier respectivement un numéro spécial à partir des meilleures communications en français et en anglais. Woegan, Koffi Akpagana (Togo) Diversité des Fruitiers Ligneux Spontanés du Togo / Diversity of Edible Wild Fruit Trees Species of Togo (in French) (pp 1-9) Original Research Paper: This work is a first outline of the diversity of edible wild fruit trees species of Togo. Twenty-nine ethnic groups in four ecological zones of Togo were surveyed. Data-gathering was based on ethnobotanic investigations and supplemented by field observations. Eighty three wild edible fruit trees species divided into 65 genera and 29 families were inventoried. Anacardiaceae, Annonaceae, Apocynaceae, Moraceae, Sapindaceae, Sapotaceae, Sterculiaceae, Tiliaceae are the families most represented. However, the family Annonaceae is the best represented in all four ecological zones. The identified species are of either wide national distribution or limited geographic distribution. The number of edible wild fruit trees species varies from an ethnic group to another and from an ecological zone to another. Edible wild fruit tree species common to ethnic communities living in the same ecological zone highlights the important contribution of the typical vegetation of each zone to the diversity of fruit tree species on one hand and the cultural similarity on the other. Most fruits inventoried are used for food and few for other purposes (medicinal, etc.). Some edible wild fruit have a very high socio-economic value for the populations, because of the incomes they provide. This research sets up an observatory for the edible wild fruit-bearing trees species of Togo to enhance their value. RESUME Ce travail présente un premier aperçu de la diversité des espèces fruitières spontanées au Togo. Vingt-neuf ethnies ont été prospectées à travers quatre zones écologiques du Togo. La collecte des données s est basée sur les enquêtes ethnobotaniques complétées par des observations de terrain. Quatre vingt trois espèces ligneuses fruitières réparties en 65 genres et 29 familles ont été inventoriées. Les Anacardiaceae, Annonaceae, Apocynaceae, Moraceae, Sapindaceae, Sapotaceae, Sterculiaceae, Tiliaceae sont les familles les plus représentées. Cependant la famille des Annonaceae est la seule à être mieux représentée dans toutes les zones. Les espèces recensées sont soit à large distribution nationale ou à distribution géographique limitée. Le nombre de fruitiers ligneux signalés varie d une ethnie à une autre. L existence des espèces fruitières communes pour les communautés ethniques vivant dans une même zone écologique met en évidence l importante contribution de la végétation caractéristique de chaque zone à la diversité des ligneux fruitiers d une part et la similarité culturelle d autre part. Cependant il existe des particularités ethniques dans chaque zone indicatrice de l influence des facteurs socio - culturels dans la sélection des espèces fruitières. La plupart de fruits inventoriés sont utilisés à des fins alimentaires et très peu à d autres fins (médicinale ou stimulante). Certains fruitiers ligneux ont un potentiel socio-economique très important à cause des revenus substantiels que leur commerce apporte aux ménages ruraux. Cette étude permet de créer un observatoire des espèces fruitières du Togo pour leur meilleure valorisation. Mamounata Belem/Ouédraogo, Joséphine Yaméogo, Sita Guinko (Burkina Faso) Les Ligneux Alimentaires des Galeries Forestières de la Réserve de Biosphère de la Mare aux Hippopotames, Burkina Faso / Ligneous Edible Plants of Gallerie Forests of the Biosphere Reserve de la Mare aux Hippopotames, Burkina Faso (in French) (pp 10-17) Original Research Paper: The Galleries Forest of «Réserve de Biosphère de la Mare aux Hippopotames» or RMBH provide riverine populations with non-timber forests products for their needs, namely food, health, fuel wood and financial resources. Surveys were conducted in four villages close to the biosphere reserve: Bala, Bossora, Tiérako and Sokourani. Useful plants were listed with the parts used. Then, different categories of use of these plants were shown. The edible plants were selected for an additional survey to make complementary enquiries, based on which 10 were prioritized. Five of these (Parkia biglobosa, Vitellaria paradoxa, Bombax costatum, Tamarindus indica and Adansonia digitata) were used for enquiries about their products and product use, made in the market of each village. All products were weighed. These products were: seeds and soumbala of P. biglobosa, fruits and nuts of V. paradoxa, sepals of B. costatum, leaves and fruits of T. indica, and leaves and pods of A. digitata. The quantity of products of all 5 plants was compared in all the villages where inquiries had been conducted. The results show that 96 multipurpose plants had been inventoried in the Galleries forests, 76 of which were ligneous. Results indicated the usefulness of products and the nutritive importance of Burkina Faso plants.
