2 DIRECTOR S NOTE - MESSAGE DE LA DIRECTRICE ARTISTIQUE Why are we doing a show based on Dr. Seuss? I read those books when I was in 1st grade! is a statement I have heard more than a few times since making the decision to produce Seussical Jr. as ISB s Middle School Community music performance project. I don t know about you, but some of the lessons that have had the most impact on me as a human being are some of the simplest ones that I learned as a child. With this said, I do not want to mislead you into thinking this is a show that will only appeal to the small people in the audience. Yes, you will see Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat, Yertle the Turtle, the Grinch and many other of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters and there will be silly jokes and antics. The stories that will be told today however are not right out of Dr. Seuss books, but the foundation of Dr. Theodor Seuss Geisel s personal beliefs that are the driving force of this show. I think the following quote from Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty sums it beautifully: Dr. Seuss believes in helping a friend, in not giving up, in keeping a promise. He believes in the values and dignity of others, in working to preserve the fragile sweetness of the natural world, and he believes that peace is the ultimate ideal, among nations and in every heart. He also believes in the pure power of the imagination. You will find all of these serious concerns at the heart of Seussical. 3 DIRECTOR S NOTE - MESSAGE DE LA DIRECTRICE ARTISTIQUE I am very excited for our casts and crews to be able to share their hard work with our entire community. What makes this production unique is that each and every middle school student has not only had the opportunity to be a part of the cast, but has also had the opportunity to contribute to the show s final outcome in many different ways including set design, prop construction, costume design, technical and behind the scenes support. Much of what you see tonight is the culmination of months of hard work taken on by over 100 individuals - students, parents, siblings, friends, teachers and staff. Thank you all, for sharing in this artistic celebration of our diverse and unique community at ISB. To my students, production team and colleagues - I want to say thank you for all of the time, effort and dedication that each and every one of you have put in to make Seussical Jr. come off the page and into our hearts. This show would not be what it is without the unique gifts and talents that each of you have shared throughout this process. I hope you all realize that for today and always, I will be One true voice in the Universe that believes in you. I love you all and wish you the best of luck on your performances. J'ai lu ces livres en CP!» J'ai entendu ce commentaire plus d une fois depuis ma décision de produire Seussical Jr., le spectacle musical du collège cette année. Je ne sais pas si c est la même chose pour vous, mais les principes importants de la vie sont ceux que j ai appris dans mon enfance. Ceci dit, je ne veux pas vous induire en erreur et que vous pensiez que c'est un spectacle qui ne touchera que les plus jeunes. Oui, vous verrez Horton l'éléphant, le Chat au Chapeau, Yertle la Tortue, le Grinch et bon nombre de personnages des albums du Dr. Seuss. Oui, il y aura des jeux de mots et des moments drôles, d autres émouvants.

4 DIRECTOR S NOTE - MESSAGE DE LA DIRECTRICE ARTISTIQUE L histoire qui nous est contée aujourd'hui n est cependant pas directement sortie des livres du Dr. Seuss, mais illustre les convictions profondes du Dr. Theodor Seuss Geisel. La citation de Lynn Ahrens et Stephen Flaherty les résume admirablement : «Dr. Seuss croit aux valeurs simples : toujours épauler un ami, ne jamais baisser les bras, tenir ses promesses. Il croit aux valeurs et à la dignité humaine, qu il faut s appliquer à préserver la fragilité de la nature, que la paix entre les nations et dans nos cœurs est notre but ultime. Il croit à la puissance de l'imagination. Vous trouverez tout cela dans le spectacle». J ai toujours aimé les comédies musicales. En 12 ans d'enseignement, Seussical Jr. est la septième production que j'ai la joie de partager et de faire vivre à mes élèves. Je suis très heureuse que nos deux équipes puissent partager le fruit de leur travail avec l'ensemble de notre communauté. Ce qui rend cette production unique est que chaque élève fait non seulement partie de la distribution, mais a également contribué à l aspect technique du spectacle : mise en scène, conception et fabrication des décors, des accessoires, des costumes, son, éclairages et travail en coulisses. Une grande partie de ce que vous allez voir ce soir est l'aboutissement de plusieurs mois d un travail acharné fourni par plus de 100 personnes - élèves, parents, frères et sœurs, amis, enseignants et membres du personnel du LIB. Merci à vous tous de célébrer les talents artistiques de notre communauté, si diversifiée et tellement unique. Je voudrais remercier les élèves, toute l'équipe de production ainsi que mes collègues de leur temps, des efforts et du dévouement que chacun et chacune ont mis pour donner vie à Seussical Jr. et le faire entrer dans nos cœurs. Ce spectacle ne serait pas ce qu'il est sans le talent que chacun d'entre vous a partagé tout au long de ce processus. J'espère que vous réalisez que pour aujourd'hui et pour toujours, je serai «Une vraie voix dans l'univers qui croit en vous». 5 THE STORY - L HISTOIRE Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat, and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage in a fantastical musical extravaganza from Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, featuring THE BLUE CAST: 8B, 7B and 6A students. Transporting audience from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat, our narrator, tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing tiny people called the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child who gets in trouble for thinking too many "thinks." Horton s challenge is twofold not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must also guard an abandoned egg that s been left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping, and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community are challenged and emerge triumphant! Horton l'éléphant, le Chat au Chapeau, et tous vos personnages préférés de Dr. Seuss prennent vie sur scène dans un spectacle musical fantastique de Lynn Ahrens et Stephen Flaherty joué par THE BLUE CAST : les élèves de 4 ème B, 5 ème B et 6 ème A. Transportant le public de la jungle de Nool au cirque McGurkus, le Chat au Chapeau, notre narrateur, raconte l'histoire de Horton, un éléphant qui découvre un grain de poussière contenant des personnages minuscules appelé les Who, dont Jojo, un enfant qui s attire des ennuis pour trop penser. Horton fait face à un double défi : non seulement il doit protéger les Who d'un monde truffé de dangers et d adversaires, mais il doit aussi garder l œuf que lui a confié l irresponsable oiseau Mayzie. Même si Horton fait face au ridicule, au danger, à un enlèvement et à un procès, l'intrépide Gertrude McFuzz ne perd jamais confiance en lui. Au bout du compte, la force de l'amitié, de la loyauté, de la famille et de la communauté, mise à l épreuve tout au long de la pièce, sort triomphante!
