Le pays, bordé par la jungle du Congo, par les terres arides du Soudan du Sud et du Kenya, et par le Lac Victoria, accueille une faune et une flore aussi diverse que ses paysages. Uganda, aptly nicknamed «The Pearl of Africa» by Winston Churchill, is a land of many faces. The country, bordered by the jungles of Congo, by the arid lands of South Sudan, and by Kenya and Lake Victoria, hosts flora and fauna as diverse as its landscape. 1. C est sur les traces de l explorateur John Speke, à la Source du Nil, que ce voyage Out of Africa débute. Depuis Jinja, sur la rive du Lac Victoria, nous prenons la route le long du Nil sur 35 km avant d arriver à Kangulumira, où nous embarquons sur un canoë afin d atteindre l île du Wildwaters Lodge sur le Nil. Ce lodge situé au milieu des rapides a été créé afin de protéger en collaboration avec les communautés locales l écosystème, ainsi que la faune et la flore des centaines d îles à cet endroit de la rivière. Après avoir profité du spectacle du plus long fleuve d Afrique, nous nous dirigerons plus à l est vers les falaises de Sipi, à quelques heures de route, où nous logerons au Sipi River Lodge qui accueille dans son domaine l une des trois cascades de Sipi. Un petit paradis où l on trouve repos et quiétude, dans une atmosphère verdoyante et mystique. Les amateurs de whisky y trouveront un bar très bien fourni. Le lendemain, nous mettrons le cap vers notre destination suprême : la vallée de Kidepo. En nous dirigeant vers le nord du pays nous rencontrerons la tribu des Karamojangs, qui signifie «le vieil homme qui ne pouvait marcher plus loin», faisant référence à leur migration depuis l Éthiopie au 16ème siècle, avant d atteindre Kidepo National Parc. Ce parc s étend sur plus de 1500 km2, entre les frontières avec le Soudan et le Kenya. La savane y est bordée par une chaîne de montagnes dominée par le Mont Morungole atteignant 2750 m d altitude. Nommé Parc National en 1962, ce sanctuaire abrite près de quatre-vingts espèces de mammifères et cinq cents espèces d oiseaux. La magie de Kidepo est que le plus souvent votre voiture sera la seule à perte de vue, au royaume des animaux sauvages. Dans le parc de Kidepo un éléphant secoue un Acacia pour en récolter les fruits. Un lionceau de Kidepo nous salue du regard. Ce parc est l'un des rares où le nombre de lions augmente chaque année, ayant doublé au cours de la dernière décennie. 14 I HAMAJI HAMAJI I 15

9 L'Apoka Lodge est situé au coeur du Parc de Kidepo. Les Bandas du Sipi River Lodge sont situés à quelques mètres au-dessus de la rivière et offrent comfort et quiètude. Vous pouvez compter sur une douche bien chaude. Des babouins profitent du couché du soleil à Kidepo. Kidepo compte plusieurs milliers de Buffalos et vous ne pourrez pas manquer de voir ses gigantesques troupeaux traverser la Savane. Profitez de la piscine et des rapides du Nil au Wild Waters Lodge. From Jinja on the shores of Lake Victoria, we drive along the Nile for 35 km before reaching Kangulumira, where we embark by canoe to reach the island of the Wildwaters Lodge. After enjoying the spectacle of the longest river in Africa, we head further east to the cliffs of Sipi, a few hours away, and stay at the Sipi River Lodge home to one of three Sipi waterfalls. It s a paradise where you can find peace and tranquility in a green and somewhat mystical atmosphere, and where whisky-lovers can enjoy the well-stocked bar. The next day we head toward our ultimate destination: Kidepo Valley. While heading towards the north we meet the tribe of Karamojangs, which means «the old man who could not walk away,» referring to their migration from Ethiopia in the 16th century, before reaching Kidepo National Park. The park spreads over 1,500 km2 between the borders of Sudan and Kenya. The savannah is surrounded by a mountain range dominated by the 2750 metre-high Mount Morungole. A national park since 1962, this sanctuary is home to nearly eighty species of mammals and an amazing five hundred species of birds. Kidepo s magic is that your car will most often be the only one in sight, alone in the kingdom of the animals. 16 I HAMAJI HAMAJI I 17

C EST UN DÉPART POUR UN VOYAGE DE PRESQUE TROIS MOIS, UN ALLER-RETOUR KINSHASA KISANGANI AVEC UN CONVOI, LENT ET IMPERTURBABLE. LES NAUFRAGES À RÉPÉTITION QUI FONT DE NOMBREUSES VICTIMES, RENDENT CES VOYAGES PÉRILLEUX. Sur les quais, pas d épouses qui font des adieux aux matelots ; seulement des dockers qui perpétuent de façon temporaire la tradition du «portage», et quelques dizaines de militaires - kalachnikovs sur le côté qui traînent là, des jours entiers sans trop savoir pour qui ni pourquoi. En l absence de routes reliant les principales villes de la République démocratique du Congo, le transport fluvial demeure le moyen de transport le plus utilisé par les populations congolaises, en général. En RDC, la navigation et les «marins d eau douce» sont donc vitaux pour l économie du pays. C est un départ pour un long voyage de presque trois mois, un aller-retour Kinshasa Kisangani. Des arrêts prévus à Mbandaka, Lisala, Bumba. Des chargements et déchargements qui s enchaînent. Les naufrages à répétition font de nombreuses victimes, et rendent la croisière périlleuse. En tête, le maître d équipage, juché sur un camion, signale avec le sémaphore de ses doigts la profondeur indiquée par les deux sondeurs de la première barge. Ils plongent sans arrêt dans l eau de longues tiges de bois graduées, et lui crient le métrage trouvé. La tension est visible sur la passerelle, et le commandant a toujours les jumelles braquées sur le maître d équipage. Il est interdit de naviguer la nuit. Les convois font de 12 à 15 heures de navigation par jour et s arrêtent à la tombée de la nuit. Le matelot se jette dans l eau et nage vers le rivage pour trouver un arbre en guise d amarrage auquel il sécurisera le convoi pour la nuit. Pour éviter les bancs de sable, les bateaux doivent faire appel à des «éclaireurs», des pêcheurs locaux, embauchés pour des petits parcours qu ils connaissent bien. Ils prennent la barre pendant quelques heures. Le commandant du bateau doit aussi savoir «lire l eau» : deviner, au sens des vagues et dans les 22 I HAMAJI HAMAJI I 23

Tous les jours les bateaux voient arriver de chaque côté des dizaines de pirogues qui accostent. Le fleuve appartient 24 I HAMAJI aux pêcheurs, et tous, hommes, femmes, enfants dès trois ans, savent manier la pirogue et la pagaie avec une adresse prodigieuse, une légèreté sans pareille. Il arrive de voir dix ou quinze personnes debout dans une petite embarcation, criant et gesticulant. Ils viennent proposer des poissons ou des animaux imprévus, comme des crocodiles ou des boas, des fruits : avocats, mangues ou papayes. Ils viennent aussi acheter ce que les femmes des matelots proposent : friperie, babioles ou des médicaments contrefaits. Bientôt l arrivée au port Les matelots savent qu ils vendront bientôt, à leur tour, les poissons et crocodiles congelés à des acheteurs qui les attendent bras ouverts sur les quais. Every day, dozens of canoes come from both sides of the river towards the convoy. The river belongs to fishermen and to everyone else: women, children from the age of three - everybody knows how to handle a canoe and paddle with prodigious skill. You can sometimes witness ten or fifteen people standing in a small boat, shouting and gesticulating. They usually sell fish or some other exotic species such as crocodiles and snakes, or fruits (avocado, mango or papaya). They are also interested by what the sailors wives have to offer: fabrics, baubles or even counterfeit medicines. 17 C est presque par hasard que fut redécouvert Bimbia, cet ancien port négrier situé à quelques encablures de la capitale économique Douala. Il y a quatre ans à peine, personne ou presque au Cameroun n en avait entendu parler, aucun guide touristique ne le mentionnait et les recherches historiques sur ce site étaient embryonnaires. Seuls quelques historiens isolés avaient repéré Bimbia, après que des travaux de terrassement l ont extirpé des lianes et des bambous à la fin des années 70. Pourtant, Bimbia était vraisemblablement l une des plaques tournantes dédiées au commerce triangulaire en Afrique centrale. En témoignent les importants vestiges d anciennes constructions carcérales que l on peut découvrir envahis par les bambous. L on sait en effet, qu au plus fort du commerce des esclaves, la côte africaine comptait des dizaines de ports négriers. Mais peu d entre eux, comme Gorée au Sénégal, ont été sauvegardés. La plupart sont en passe de disparaître, risquant d être, à jamais, ensevelis par la nature et dans les mémoires. Sans un événement récent, cela aurait été le cas de Bimbia. Cet événement, c est la possibilité, aux États-Unis, d effectuer des tests ADN afin de connaître son origine ethnique. C est ainsi que les premiers Afro-Américains, dont le test avait indiqué des racines camerounaises, ont commencé à arriver au Cameroun en décembre Accompagnés de compatriotes historiens, ces premiers descendants d esclaves se sont naturellement rendus à Bimbia. Et ils ont découvert avec consternation que ce site était non seulement abandonné mais aussi occulté par l Histoire camerounaise. C est ainsi que les médias internationaux se sont emparé de cette histoire oubliée, et qu ils ont révélé au grand jour l existence de Bimbia. Ce coup de projecteur international a aussitôt déclenché, aux États-Unis, un vif intérêt. L ambassade américaine a très vite financé un premier chantier de stabilisation des structures et d aménagement touristique du site. Et des chercheurs américains se sont lancés dans des projets de recherches pour déterminer quels bateaux négriers étaient passés par Bimbia. Au Cameroun, en revanche, l intérêt reste mitigé, mais laisse espérer aux historiens du pays que leurs recherches seront peut-être bientôt reconnues voire encouragées. Four years ago, almost nobody in Cameroon had heard about it, no tour guide ever mentioned it and historical research about this site was embryonic. Only a few historians had identified Bimbia after some earthmoving works released it from the lianas and bamboos in the late 1970s. Yet Bimbia was probably one of the hubs dedicated to triangular trade in Central Africa. This was evidenced by the remaining old prison buildings that can be seen overgrown with bamboo. We know for a fact that at the height of the slave trade, the African coast had dozens of slave ports. But few of them, such as Gorée in Senegal, have been preserved. Most of them are currently threatened, likely to be forever buried by nature and memories. Without a recent development, it would have been the case at Bimbia. It has presented an opportunity for the United States to conduct DNA tests to investigate ethnic origins. Thus, the first African-Americans whose tests indicated Cameroonian 32 I HAMAJI HAMAJI I 33

They were dismayed to discover that this site was not only abandoned, but also obscured by Cameroon s history. This is how the international media seized on this forgotten history and brought to light the existence of Bimbia. The international spotlight immediately triggered an interest in the United States. The US embassy soon financed a project that aimed to stabilize the foundations of the structures and the development of tourism on the site. American researchers have engaged in projects to determine which slave ships had actually passed through Bimbia. In Cameroon, however, interest is mixed, but Bimbia still gives reasons for the historians to hope that their research may be soon recognized or encouraged.
