5 Gilles Jacob Président du Festival de Cannes et de la Cinéfondation President, Festival de Cannes and Cinéfondation En créant L Atelier en 2005, notre premier objectif était de sélectionner des projets de films très variés par leurs thèmes, leur distribution géographique et leur invention créative Le second était de s assurer que ces projets, soutenus chacun par un producteur ayant déjà réuni une partie du financement, pourraient être réalisés rapidement Le troisième était de limiter la sélection à 15 projets pour assurer plus d impact à ceux-ci et obtenir le meilleur résultat pour chacun Pour cette huitième édition s expriment ainsi 15 voix singulières originaires de 14 pays, du réalisateur juste remarqué au cinéaste reconnu Les projets, portés par des producteurs indépendants, traduisent le combat qu ils mènent pour la défense et l illustration d un cinéma exigeant et novateur Sur les 111 projets présentés au cours des sept années d existence de L Atelier, 72 ont déjà été réalisés, 20 sont en préproduction En invitant les réalisateurs et leurs producteurs à rencontrer, chaque année pendant le Festival de Cannes, des centaines de partenaires potentiels (producteurs, distributeurs, fonds d aide ), L Atelier permet à leurs projets d accéder aux coproductions internationales, décuplant ainsi leurs chances d être réalisés Nous tenons à saluer votre soutien important lors des précédentes sessions Pour la suite de l aventure, nous comptons sur vous et vous en remercions By creating L Atelier in 2005, our first objective was to select film projects varied in their themes, their geographical distribution and creative invention The second was to ensure that these projects, each supported by a producer who has already gathered part of the funding, could be made quickly The third was to limit the selection to 15 projects to ensure greater exposure for them and get the best results for everyone For this eighth edition 15 unique voices from 14 countries can be heard, from the newly-discovered director to the wellknown filmmaker The projects, carried along by independent producers, reflect their battle for the defense and illustration of a demanding and innovative cinema Of the 111 projects presented during the seven years of L Atelier, 72 have already been completed and 20 are in pre-production By inviting directors and their producers to meet hundreds of potential partners each year during the Festival de Cannes (producers, distributors, funding bodies, etc), L Atelier offers the projects access to international co-production, thereby maximizing their chances of being made We would like to acknowledge your strong support in the previous years For a future as successful as the past, we are counting on you Thank you

6 4 5 Biographie du réalisateur Director Biography Malek Bensmaïl est né à Constantine (Algérie) en 1966 Très tôt il a tourné des films en super 8 Depuis ses études en cinéma à Paris et sa formation aux studios Lenfilm à Saint-Pétersbourg, il s est consacré à la réalisation de documentaires Tous ses films sont liés à l histoire de son pays Son style cinématographique dessine les contours complexes et sensibles de l humanité Pour le réalisateur, le cinéma est avant tout un moyen au service de la réflexion et des échanges culturels Applaudis par la critique, ses films ont reçu des prix dans de nombreux festivals autour du monde Son dernier long métrage, La Chine est encore loin (2010) a ainsi remporté le Grand Prix du Dokfilmfestival de Munich et le Prix du Jury au Festival des 3 continents Avant cela, Aliénations (2004) lui avait déjà valu le Library Award au Festival du Cinéma du réel et le Prix Magnolia au Festival de Shanghai Récemment, Malek a eu l honneur de séjourner dans la résidence Villa Kujoyama Malek Bensmaïl was born in Constantine, Algeria in 1966 Early in his youth, he shot films in super 8 Since completing his film studies in Paris and training at Lenfilm studios in Saint Petersburg, he has devoted his filmmaking efforts to the documentary genre All of his films relate to the history of his country His signature cinematography depicts the complex, sensitive contours of humanity His aim is to use film as a medium for cultural reflection and comparison His films have received critical acclaim and have won awards at a number of festivals worldwide In 2010, his latest feature, La Chine est encore loin, won the Munich Dokfilmfestival s Grand Prix and the Jury Prize at the Festival des 3 Continents Before that, he had already received the Library Award for Aliénations at the Cinéma du réel in 2004 and the Magnolia Award at the Shanghai Festival Recently, Malek was awarded a residency at Japan s Villa Kujoyama

Un acteur confronté à son personnage, un théologien musulman en quête de modernité Le manuscrit d Ibrahim est le point de départ de cette fiction, son socle Revenir à partir du présent sur l histoire de ce voyageur du début du siècle dernier, c est revenir sur cette question de l échec supposé du monde arabe et sur l histoire du passage difficile d un monde à un autre Comme approche narrative, j ai songé à La Rihla (le périple), un genre littéraire arabe qui s est épanoui au Moyen- Âge Le récit d un voyageur narré comme une expérience personnelle, combinant le banal et le merveilleux, suite de réflexions qui interrogent le rapport à l identité et à l altérité, à la recherche de l Autre dans des terres lointaines Les thèmes du chaos personnel et collectif, du voyage et du théâtre, seront mis à l épreuve dans le tumulte d un tournage à la frontière du réel et de la fiction While Japan has just experienced a nuclear disaster, Masako, a theatre director, has only one thing on her mind: getting a play off the ground in her Tokyo theatre The play is an adaptation of a manuscript left in Japan by an ulama during his travels a century ago, in search of a way to modernize the Arab world To play the theologian, Masako and her disciple Aska call onto the renowned Algerian actor, Agoumi Amidst the troubled Arab Spring, the trio gets to know each other, each with his or her own story, his or her own skeletons in the closet Over the course of the rehearsals, they talk of the ulama Ibrahim s notes, of history, and of their countries Their conversations take fascinating and sometimes funny turns The play begins to take shape when Masako dies unexpectedly, leaving the troupe to handle her will Despite the proscription against such practices on Islamic lands, Aska and Agoumi decide to scatter the theatre director s ashes in Algeria For them, another journey is about to begin Modernize Islam or Islamize modernity? An actor confronted with his own persona, a Muslim theologist in search of modernity The manuscript of Ibrahim represents the foundation of this film To look back at the story of this traveler from last century through a present-day perspective involves examining the alleged failure of the Arab-Muslim world and the history of the difficult transition from one world to another For a narrative approach, I turned to The Rihla (the journey), an Arab literary genre that flourished during the Middle Ages In The Rihla, the traveler s tale is a personal account that combines both the banal and the fantastical It strings out a series of thoughts on the complex relationship between identity and otherness The topics of personal and societal chaos, journey and theatre will all be put to the test in the tumult of a film shot on the border between documentary and fiction

J ai vu aux informations un détenu à qui l on demandait s il referait le même geste qui l a conduit en prison : tuer un homme Pas n importe quel homme, un délinquant qui avait, des mois durant, sous les yeux passifs de la police et du système judiciaire, traqué, harcelé, agressé sa famille, et essayé de violer sa jeune fille Sa réponse m a bouleversé «Non Je ne pourrais jamais commettre de nouveau un tel acte On ne peut pas imaginer ce que cela signifie de tuer Rien ne peut justifier de prendre la vie d un autre être humain» To Kill A Man emmène le spectateur dans un voyage entre peur, abandon et rage ; un voyage qui ferait sentir que tuer un délinquant vicieux est la seule solution Pourtant, au lieu de présenter le meurtre comme un soulagement, le personnage, et par extension le spectateur, commence à réaliser le poids de son acte qui lui apparaît, de façon écrasante, être la source de dommages irréparables Jorge is a hardworking family man, who lives with his wife and two of his three sons He earns just enough to cover their basic necessities One afternoon, while returning home from work, he is mugged by Kalule, a well-known delinquent from his neighborhood Jorge escapes injury in the incident, but his older son decides to confront Kalule to recover the little that was taken from his father When Kalule realizes he is attacked, he shoots Jorge s son and nearly kills him When the police arrive, they arrest Kalule, who later receives a mere two-year prison sentence Upon his release from jail, Kalule begins to terrorize Jorge s family They go to the police for help, but to no avail When Jorge can t take Kalule s harassment any longer, he decides to take justice into his own hands A journey of fear, desolation and rage A few years ago, I saw in the news an inmate being asked if he would perpetrate anew the deed that landed him in jail: to kill a man Not any man, but a known delinquent that for months had stalked, harassed and threatened his family, amidst the indifference of the police that did nothing to protect them His answer puzzled me: No, I could never commit again such an act because you cannot fathom what it means to kill a man Nothing can justify taking the life of another human being To Kill A Man aims to take the viewer into a journey of fear, desolation and rage that makes them feel that killing a vicious delinquent is the only solution Yet, instead of portraying the murder as a relief, the protagonist and by extension, the viewer begins to realize the weight of his deed, appearing overwhelmingly as the source of irrevocable damage

12 10 11 Biographie du réalisateur Director Biography Né le 29 décembre 1982 à Pékin dans une famille d artistes d opéra, Pengfei Song a développé sous l influence de sa famille une passion pour les arts Après ses études secondaires, il est venu vivre à Paris où il a étudié le cinéma à l Institut International de l Image et du Son Il est sorti major de sa promotion en réalisation Après sept années d immersion dans la culture européenne, qui ont profondément changé sa personnalité et sa vision de l existence, il est retourné en Chine où il voit les gens et les choses dans une toute nouvelle perspective Cette expérience a influencé le choix du sujet de son film, qui se veut le reflet des profondes transformations de la vie des gens à Pékin, et la démonstration de l absurdité de ce mode de vie Song a réalisé trois courts métrages Underground Fragrance, son premier long métrage, a reçu le Production Award au Torino Filmlab 2011 Pengfei Song was born on December 29th, 1982 in Beijing, in a family of opera performers Under the influence of his family, he developed a strong passion for the arts After graduating from high school, he went to Paris to study film at L Institut International de l Image et du Son, where he majored in film directing After seven years of immersion in European culture, years that transformed his personality and views on life, he returned to China and was able to see people and things with an exciting new perspective This influenced his choice for this film s subject, in hopes of reflecting the changing lives of the people of Beijing, while revealing the absurdity of their way of life Song has directed three short films Underground Fragrance is his first feature film, awarded with the Production Award at Torino Filmlab 2011
