2 RESUME La ponctualité des trains est une des composantes importantes de la qualité de service offerte aux voyageurs. Si les mesures appropriées de stabilité ne sont pas prises lors de l'établissement des horaires, alors il y a un risque que le faible retard d'un train se propage aux autres trains du réseau en raison notamment des correspondances dans un noeud et créant ainsi une réaction en chaîne. Tout nouvel horaire doit être évalué du point de vue de la stabilité avant de le mettre en service surtout s'il s'agit d'un horaire cadencé dans un réseau fortement maillé. Pour ce cas il n'existe pas de méthodes ni d'outils permettant d'analyser la stabilité d'un horaire. L'objet de cette thèse est l'élaboration d'une méthode et d'un modèle destiné au planificateur pour l'aider dans l'analyse de la stabilité d'un horaire. Un modèle de simulation appelé FASTA a été réalisé pour simuler la circulation des trains selon un horaire donné sur un réseau; les résultats de la simulation (les retards des trains) permettant d'étudier le comportement du système du point de vue de la stabilité. FASTA est un modèle de simulation par événements où les événements sont des arrivées et départs des trains des gares. La caractéristique principale du modèle est son aspect macroscopique concernant la génération et la propagation des retards dus aux interactions entre trains à cause des contraintes du réseau et de l'horaire, des correspondances et du plan de rotation du matériel roulant notamment. Le modèle sert d'outil d'aide à la décision lors de la planification des programmes d'exploitation et pour le choix des valeurs des majorations de temps de parcours et des marges à introduire dans l'horaire. Le modèle a été utilisé avec succès dans l'évaluation de la stabilité des horaires élaborés pour le projet Rail 2000 des Chemins de fer fédéraux suisses. SUMMARY The punctuality of passenger trains is one of the key factors of quality of service offered to passengers. If appropriate stability mesures are not taken during the construction of the timetable, then there is a risk that the minor delay of a train may propagate to other trains in the network mainly due to connections at a given station thus creating a snow-bal1 effect. Every new timetable needs to be evaluated for stability especially for cyclic timetables in a highly interconnected network before putting it into service. For this case there exists no method or tool for the analysis of stability of a given timetable. The objective of the thesis is to develop a method and a model which helps in the analysis of stability of a given timetable. A simulation model called FASTA was developed which simulates the running of trains in the network of a given timetable where the results of the mode1 (train-delays) allowing the possibility to study the behaviour of the system related to stability. FASTA is an event-based simulation model where the events are arrivals and departures of trains at stations. The important characteristic of the model is the focus on the macroscopic aspects of delay generation and propagation of delays due to interaction between trains because of connections, rotation plan and the constraints related to network and timetable. The model is a decision aid planning tool used in the context of planning of operation and it helps in the choice of values for buffer and recovery times to be incorporateci into the timetable. The model was used conclusively in the evaluation of stability of timetables developed in the context of the Rail 2000 project of the Swiss Federal Railways.

3 4 Zusammenfassung ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Die Piinkuichkeit eines Zugs ist einer von den wichtigen Faktoren der den Reisenden gebotenen Dienstleistungsqualitat. Wenn bei der Erstellung von Fahrplanen die passenden Stabilitatsmassnahmen nicht berücksichtigt werden, ist das Risiko, dab sich eine kleine Zugsverspatung auf die anderen Netzziige ausbreitet, insbesondere wegen den Verkehrsverbindungen in einem Knoten und fiihrt so zu einer Kettenreaktion. Vor der Inbetriebsetzung mub jeder neue Fahrplan in Stabilitatshinsicht eingeschfitzt werden, vor allem für einen Taktfahrplan eines stark vermaschten Netzes. In diesem Fa11 gibt es keine Methoden und Werkzeuge, die die Stabilitiit eines Fahrplans zu analysieren ermoglichen. Das Ziel dieser These ist die Erstellung eines Modells, die dem Planer diese Stabilitat ni analysieren erlaubt. Ein Simulationsmodell, genannt FASTA, wurde erstellt, das die Zugsfahrten eines gegebenen Fahrplans auf einem Netz simuliert. Die Simulationsresultate sind die Zugsverspatungen. FASTA ist ein Simulationsmodell durch Ereignisse gerichtet, die Zugsankiinfte und Abfahrten aus Bahnhofen sind. Das Hauptrnerkmal des Modells ist sein makroscopische Aussehen betreffend der Erzeugung und der Propagierung der Verspatung durch Interaktion zwischen Ziigen wegen der Netz- und Fahrplanzwiingen, der Verbindungen und der Fahrzeugumlaufe. Das Mode11 ist ein Hilfswerkzeug für die Entscheidung bei der Planung der Betriebsprograrnme und der Wahl der Werten für den Zuschlag der Fahrzeiten und den im Fahrplan einzufiihrenden Pufferzeiten. Das Mode11 wurde erfolgreich bei der Schatzung der Stabilitiit der im Rahmen des SBB Bahn 2000 Projekts erstellten Fahrpliinen verwendet.
