Ce guide pratique s adresse aux chercheurs, doctorants, post-doctorants, ingénieurs, bref à tout membre d une équipe-projet INRIA souhaitant développer ou participer à des projets de transfert vers l industrie. Le transfert des compétences et des résultats de la recherche vers l industrie est une des missions fondamentales de l INRIA. L institut a donc mis en place une organisation et des outils pour accompagner les porteurs de projets de transfert. Tout dépend de l objectif poursuivi. S il s agit de produire conjointement des connaissances en réponse à un problème identifié avec une entreprise et à éventuellement tester leur mise en oeuvre dans un prototype technologique, on reste dans le domaine de la recherche partenariale. Si par contre l objectif est d intégrer des résultats de recherche dans un produit, un procédé industriel ou un service, on parle de transfert. A titre d exemple, collaborer avec des chercheurs de la division R&D d un groupe industriel relève presque toujours de la recherche, tandis que créer son entreprise ou implémenter un logiciel ou un brevet dans le produit d une PME, ressortit au transfert. > Voir : Transfert p. 6 JE M INTÉRESSE À UN SECTEUR INDUSTRIEL (LES JEUX VIDÉOS, LES DRONES, L HOSPITALISATION À DOMICILE...) : J AIMERAIS SUIVRE CE QUI S Y PASSE. LE TRANSFERT Le transfert de technologie consiste à transformer une technologie issue de travaux de recherche en produits et services. Le projet de transfert se distingue donc en particulier d un projet de recherche collaborative (ANR, FUI, Programmes Européens) dont la finalité est la production de connaissances et/ou de technologies. Le transfert peut prendre plusieurs formes, et en particulier, à l INRIA : - la concession de licences ou la cession d un actif de propriété intellectuelle (brevet ou logiciel), - un partenariat bilatéral avec une PME débouchant sur un produit/service, - la création d une entreprise, - une action de standardisation (la technologie devient ainsi incontournable dans les produits concernés), - la constitution d une communauté industrielle de contributeurs et d utilisateurs de logiciels open source. LE CPPI : POUR UN ACCOMPAGNEMENT DE PROXIMITÉ DANS LES PROJETS DE TRANSFERT Les Chargés des Partenariats et des Projets d'innovation ou CPPI sont vos contacts dans chaque Centre. Leur mission est de vous guider et de vous accompagner dans : - la qualification et la protection de vos logiciels et brevets, - vos partenariats industriels, - vos projets de transfert. Professionnels du transfert, ils sont aussi vos relais vers l ensemble des compétences de la Direction du Transfert et de l Innovation (DTI). Allez rencontrer vos CPPI : parlez leur, même très tôt, de vos idées et de vos projets, ils sont là pour vous aider à les clarifier et à les réaliser. Les coordonnées des CPPI de votre Centre figurent à la fin de ce guide. I WORK WITH AN INDUSTRY PLAYER: IS THIS CONSIDERED TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER? The answer depends on the aim pursued. If the aim is to produce skills in joint collaboration with a corporation in response to an identified problem, and ultimately to test their implementation in the form of a technological prototype, then you are in the realm of research partnerships. However, if the objective is to integrate research results into a product, an industrial process, or a service, then you are in the field of technology transfer. For instance, collaborating with researchers from the R&D division of a corporation is almost always considered to be research, whereas creating your own business or implementing a SME-related software package or patent is considered to be technology transfer. > See: Technology Transfer p. 7 I'M INTERESTED IN A SPECIFIC INDUSTRY SECTOR (VIDEO GAMES, DRONE AIRCRAFT, HOMECARE, ETC.) AND I D LIKE TO TRACK DEVELOPMENTS. You can join a thematic network focusing on a specific business sector (such as energy, Smartphone applications, digital solutions for healthcare, etc.). These information-sharing networks bring together scientists from all INRIA Research Centers and are managed by the Technology Transfer Associates. They monitor market trends, industry players and technology transfer opportunities. > See: Technology Transfer Associates p. 7, Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officer p. 7 HOW DOES INRIA PROMOTE TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER? There are several systems you can use to track INRIA s technology transfer efforts: - a Wiki managed by the Technology Transfer and Innovation Department (DTI). This covers monitoring, reporting, contacts, opportunities and practical information, and is a space where you can find and share information and exchange good practices. You can access its Web site, > TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER Technology transfer transforms a technology developed from research work into products and services. A technology transfer project thus differs from a collaborative research project, involving for example the French National Research Agency (ANR), the French Central Interministerial Research Support Fund (FUI) or a European research program, the aim of which is to produce knowledge and/or technologies. Technology transfer may take a variety of forms. INRIA focuses on: - granting licenses or transferring intellectualproperty assets (patents or software), - forming bilateral partnerships with SMEs that result in products or services, - business creation, - standardization (so the technology becomes inseparable from the products concerned), - setting up industry communities of contributors to and users of open-source software. TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AND PARTNERSHIPS OFFICER: YOUR COACH DURING A TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER PROJECT The Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officers (Chargés des Partenariats et des Projets d'innovation CPPI) are your contact points at your Center. Their role is to guide and support you in: - qualifying and protecting your software and patents, - forming industry partnerships, - running your technology transfer project. They are transfer professionals, and through them you can access all the skills of the Technology Transfer and Innovation Department (DTI). Make sure you meet and talk to your CPPI, even very early on, about your ideas and your projects. He will help you clarify and achieve your goals. The contact information of your center s CPPIs can be found at the end of this Guide. It also contains presentations from businesses (SMEs) seeking partnerships with INRIA project teams. > TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER ASSOCIATES INRIA s Technology Transfer Associates are dedicated to specific software sectors. They have a broad view of their sector, the relevant business players (SMEs, Competitiveness Centers), and all ongoing technology transfer projects. They work with you and your Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officer (CPPI) to develop your transfer project, especially its business and marketing aspects. The five sectors are: 1/ Healthcare, life sciences and biotechnology, 2/ Software production and embedded systems, 3/ Aeronautics, defense, space and security, 4/ Energy, transport and sustainable development, 5/ Telecommunications, networks and multimedia. Si vous êtes auteur d un logiciel ou inventeur d un brevet, vous avez le droit d être reconnu comme tel. Mais, conformément à la législation française, vous n êtes pas propriétaire de vos résultats (brevets, savoir-faire, logiciels, technologies) et en particulier n avez pas la prérogative d en assurer la diffusion ou le transfert. C est l INRIA, plus précisément l institution qui vous emploie, qui en a la propriété et construit ainsi son «patrimoine intellectuel», qu elle a pour mission d organiser et de valoriser. > Voir : CPPI p. 6, Licence p. 10, Brevet p. 12 COMMENT PROTÉGER MON LOGICIEL? COMMENT PERMETTRE À UN TIERS DE L UTILISER? Le logiciel que je développe à l INRIA doit être protégé. Ensuite tout logiciel diffusé doit obligatoirement être associé à un document juridique la licence qui règle l usage qu une tierce personne peut en faire. Chaque grande étape de la vie d un logiciel fait ainsi l objet d un dépôt à l'agence pour la Protection des Programmes (APP) par l INRIA. Ce logiciel doit donc être déclaré au CPPI de votre Centre pour permettre son identification et sa protection. > Voir : CPPI p. 6, Licence p. 10 QUELLE LICENCE POUR MON LOGICIEL? LOGICIEL LIBRE OU LOGICIEL PROPRIÉTAIRE? Le choix du mode de diffusion (libre/propriétaire) et de la licence découle d une caractérisation de la situation et des objectifs poursuivis. La question doit d ailleurs se poser le plus tôt possible car elle influe sur le développement (architecture, contrats, intégration de composants externes, etc.). Le choix de licence se fait en concertation entre le chercheur et le CPPI, puisque le choix de la licence revient légalement à l institution INRIA. Ce choix pourra éventuellement faire l objet d une demande de recommandation spécifique auprès de la Direction du Transfert et de l Innovation (DTI). > Voir : CPPI p. 6, Licence p. 10, Intéressement financier p. 12 LA LICENCE Licences de logiciels libres, licences propriétaires exclusives ou non, prêt à titre gracieux, double licensing : le choix de la licence doit reposer sur une caractérisation des logiciels (qualification juridique, droit d auteur, propriété, compatibilité des licences), sur l évaluation de la maturité du logiciel, sur la mesure des impacts économiques et académiques et sur une mesure de la capacité à supporter une communauté. Plus tôt ces questions sont étudiées, plus vite le mode de transfert est arrêté et plus il est possible d influencer le développement en conséquence (architecture, contrats, intégration de composants externes ). Il est important de penser dès l amorce du projet à ce qui se passera pour le logiciel libre quand il atteindra une maturité commerciale. Légalement, le choix de la licence libre revient à l institution INRIA. Concrètement ce choix est le fruit d une concertation entre le CPPI et le chercheur et d une stratégie de transfert/diffusion élaborée en commun. DO I OWN MY RESEARCH RESULTS? If you have developed software or if your invention has been patented, you are entitled to recognition. However, under French law, you do not own your results (whether they are patented inventions, know-how, software or technologies), and in particular you have no exclusive right to distribute or transfer them. INRIA, or more precisely the institution employing you, owns the results and uses them to build up its intellectual assets. INRIA s mission is to organize and exploit these assets. > See: Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officer p. 7, Software license p. 11 HOW DO I PROTECT MY SOFTWARE? HOW DO I ENABLE A THIRD PARTY TO USE IT? Software I develop at INRIA must be protected. Any subsequent distribution of the software must be subject to a license, a legal document that defines how it may be used by a third party. Each time the software is developed to a major new stage, INRIA lodges a copy with the French Software Protection Agency (Agence pour la Protection des Programmes - APP). Therefore, the software must be reported to the CPPI of your Center, so that it can be identified and protected. > See: Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officer p. 7, Software license p. 11 WHAT SORT OF LICENSE SHOULD I CHOOSE FOR MY SOFTWARE? OPEN-SOURCE OR PROPRIETARY? How the software is distributed (as open-source or proprietary) and how it is licensed depends on the specific situation and objectives. These questions should be addressed as early as possible, since they influence the development process (software architecture, contractual solutions, integration of external components). The researcher and the Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officer (CPPI) jointly select the type of license, since legally INRIA is responsible for this decision. The Technology Transfer and Innovation Department (DTI) may be asked for a specific recommendation in support of this decision. > See: Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officer p. 7, Software license p. 11, Profit sharing p. 13 SOFTWARE LICENSE The choice between open-source licenses, proprietary licenses (exclusive or not), ex-gratia loans, or double licensing will depend on several factors: the software s features (legal status, copyright, ownership and license compatibility); an assessment of the software s likely maturity; an assessment of its economic and academic impact; and an assessment of its capacity to support a community. The earlier these issues are considered, the quicker the transfer method can be determined. This allows it to influence the development (software architecture, contractual solutions, integration of external components). Right from the outset, it is important to consider how open-source software will be treated when it reaches commercial maturity. Legally, INRIA decides whether or not to make the license free of charge. In practice, the Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officer (CPPI) and the researcher make the decision together and jointly define a transfer/distribution strategy

QUELLE LICENCE CHOISIR POUR DIFFUSER MON LOGICIEL DANS LA COMMUNAUTÉ DES CHERCHEURS? Libre n est pas synonyme de recherche et propriétaire de distribution commerciale. Il existe des logiciels propriétaires à des fins de recherche et des logiciels libres dans le monde économique. Le choix d une licence constitue une réflexion stratégique que vous devez mener conjointement avec votre CPPI. A l échelle nationale, la ligne stratégique est la suivante : optimiser l impact de la technologie sur la société, tout en préservant l utilisation des acquis antérieurs. > Voir : CPPI p. 6, Licence p. 10, Intéressement financier p. 12 J AIMERAIS DÉPOSER UN BREVET. PUIS-JE PUBLIER AVANT LE DÉPÔT DE MON BREVET? Non. Toute divulgation d information relative à l invention, avant son dépôt, risque de remettre en cause le caractère nouveau de l invention et donc la délivrance du brevet. Le dépôt de brevet suit un processus déterminé dont le rythme et le déroulement sont définis conjointement par l inventeur et le CPPI, dans le cadre défini par la loi. > Voir : CPPI p. 6, Licence p. 10, Intéressement financier p. 12 QUELS CODES PUIS-JE INTÉGRER À MES LOGICIELS? Les possibilités d intégration de codes existants dépendent des licences associées et de la diffusion prévue pour votre logiciel. Le CPPI de votre Centre est votre interlocuteur sur ces questions et fera avec vous l analyse de la situation et des possibilités en fonction de vos objectifs. > Voir : CPPI p. 6, Licence p. 10 LE BREVET Le brevet permet de rendre publique la description d une invention technique en échange d un monopole de droit (mais payant, défini géographiquement et limité dans le temps) sur l exploitation industrielle et commerciale de cette invention. Le brevet constitue un actif technologique de l INRIA, prêt à être transféré à une entreprise. De par sa vocation et son coût, un brevet doit être indissociable d une stratégie de transfert explicite. INTÉRESSEMENT FINANCIER DES AUTEURS ET INVENTEURS Depuis octobre 1996, les chercheurs de l INRIA peuvent bénéficier d'un complément de rémunération s ils ont participé à la création d'un logiciel ou à des travaux générant des revenus d'exploitation. Une partie de l'argent reçu par l'inria dans le cadre d'un contrat d'exploitation (licence ou cession de logiciels, brevets, savoir-faire) leur est alors reversée. La part contributive de chaque auteur ou inventeur est en général fixée lors du dépôt de logiciels à l'app ou dans le formulaire de déclaration d'invention pour un brevet. Le complément de rémunération dû au titre de l'intéressement est versé annuellement. CAN I HAVE AN OPEN-SOURCE LICENSE FOR RESEARCHERS AND A PROPRIETARY/COMMERCIAL LICENSE FOR BUSINESS CORPORATIONS? WHAT LICENSE SHOULD I CHOOSE IF I WANT TO DISTRIBUTE MY SOFTWARE AMONG THE RESEARCH COMMUNITY? Open-source is not restricted to research, nor proprietary to commerce: some research software is proprietary and some open-source software is used by the business community. Choosing a license is a strategic matter that you must decide in conjunction with your CPPI. Nationally, the strategic objective is to optimize the technology s impact on society, while ensuring that previous research remains accessible. > See: Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officer p. 7, Software license p. 11, Profit sharing p. 13 I WOULD LIKE TO FILE A PATENT. CAN I PUBLISH MY RESULTS BEFORE I DO SO? No. If you divulge any information about the invention before it is patented, you jeopardize its newness and hence the granting of the patent. The inventor and the Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officer (CPPI) together determine the timetable for filing the patent and the stages in the process, in accordance with current regulatory provisions. > See: Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officer p. 7, Patents p. 11, Profit sharing p. 13 WHAT TYPES OF CODE MAY I INCORPORATE INTO MY SOFTWARE? The extent to which you may incorporate existing code depends on the associated licenses and on how you plan to distribute your software. You should discuss these matters and analyze your situation and options with your Center s Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officer (CPPI). > See: Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officers p. 7, Software license p. 11 PATENTS A patent makes it possible to publicly divulge the description of a technical invention in exchange for a legal monopoly concerning its industrial and commercial use. This monopoly entails receipt of payments for use of the invention within a geographic area for a limited period. The patent constitutes a technology asset belonging to INRIA and may be transferred to a business corporation. Because of its purpose and its cost, a patent must always be the subject of an explicit technology transfer strategy. PROFIT SHARING FOR AUTHORS AND INVENTORS Since October 1996, INRIA researchers have been eligible for additional remuneration if they have participated in creating software or in work generating operating revenue. In such cases, they are paid a proportion of the money received by INRIA under an operating contract (a license or assignment of software, patents or know-how). As a rule, the relative contribution of each author or inventor is defined either when the software is lodged with the APP or when the invention declaration patent form is completed. The additional profit sharing remuneration is paid annually

Les CPPI et les Responsables sectoriels du transfert de technologie construisent ainsi avec vous votre projet de transfert, en vous aidant en particulier à en appréhender les dimensions industrielles et marché. Tous les projets de transfert de l INRIA (éventuellement très tôt, au stade de l intention) sont présentés au Comité de Suivi des Actions de Transfert Technologique (CSATT). Ce comité est composé de personnalités extérieures ayant une forte expérience du transfert et se réunit tous les deux mois pour analyser et discuter l opportunité des projets. Son rôle est de questionner les projets et de formuler des recommandations dans un objectif d amélioration de la stratégie et du montage de ces projets. Le Comité assure également un suivi de ces actions dans la durée, si bien que les projets sont souvent amenés à être discutés plusieurs fois au CSATT. Par ailleurs l INRIA s appuie sur les recommandations du CSATT pour ses décisions de lancement et de soutien des projets de transfert. LES MOYENS POUR LE TRANSFERT L INRIA peut soutenir financièrement les projets dans le cadre de sa mission de transfert de technologies. Ce soutien s appuie sur les recommandations du CSATT et dépend de la qualification du projet faite conjointement par le porteur de projet, le CPPI et le Responsable sectoriel. Les moyens dévolus au projet sont «sur mesure» et attribués au fil de l eau : poste d ingénieur dédié au transfert, matériel, étude de marché, démonstrations dans des salons professionnels, études économiques, participation à des comités de standardisation, animation de communautés d utilisateurs pour la diffusion de logiciels libres, etc. I AM CONSIDERING A TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER PROJECT: WHAT SUPPORT CAN INRIA OFFER ME? Your Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officer (CPPI) will assist you in defining and setting up your project, making use of INRIA s network of technology transfer professionals, in particular the Technology Transfer Associates. The latter will in particular help you with the non-technological aspects (e.g. partnerships, market players, marketing, legal and financial issues) of your project. WHAT TYPE OF APPLICATION SHOULD I DEVELOP TO ACHIEVE GREATER IMPACT AND ULTIMATELY A BETTER CHANCE OF TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER? This requires strategic thinking, for which you need knowledge of the different industry sectors. You can draw on the skills of the transfer professionals, the Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officers (CPPI) and the Technology Transfer Associates, and ask the Technology Transfer Monitoring Committee (CSATT) for advice. > See Technology Transfer p. 7, Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officer p. 7, Technology Transfer Associate p. 7, Technology Transfer Monitoring Committee p. 17, Transfer Resources p. 17 TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER MONITORING COMMITTEE - THE CSATT Within each INRIA Research Center there are one or more Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officers (CPPI) (see above) who help you transfer your technology and mobilize all or part of the support system. The CPPIs and the Technology Transfer Associates thus work with you to design and implement your technology transfer project, and in particular help you to understand the business and marketing aspects. All INRIA s technology transfer projects (sometimes very early on in the process) are put before the Technology Transfer Monitoring Committee (Comité de suivi des actions de transfert technologique CSATT). The CSATT comprises persons external to INRIA with considerable transfer experience and meets every two months to analyze and discuss project opportunities. Its goal is to improve a project s strategy and structure by asking questions and making recommendations. The Committee also reviews and discusses a given project s development over time. INRIA also relies on the CSATT s recommendations in deciding whether or not to launch and support technology transfer projects. TRANSFER RESOURCES In promoting technology transfer, INRIA may offer projects financial aid. Its support is based on the Technology Transfer Monitoring Committee s (CSATT) recommendations, and depends on the type of project defined jointly by the project leader, the Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officer (CPPI) and the Technology Transfer Associate. The resources allocated to the project are tailored individually and are assigned over a period. They may include a post for a dedicated transfer engineer, equipment, market research, demonstrations at trade shows, economic surveys, membership of standardization committees and events promoting the distribution of open-source software among user communities, etc. If the transfer involves creating a business, the support also includes the services of IT-Translation (see Creating your business p. 23 ). Les conditions juridiques de propriété et les conditions d exploitation des connaissances et des technologies utilisées (background) et des résultats produits (foreground : logiciels ou brevets) sont des éléments essentiels. En effet, elles rendront ou non possible l éventuel transfert des résultats. Les partenariats stratégiques conclus par l INRIA sont des partenariats de recherche. Ils permettent en particulier aux équipes d inscrire leurs collaborations dans un programme commun bilatéral et pluriannuel. Par définition ces programmes de recherche : - sont ambitieux et partent de «bons sujets» proposés par la partie industrielle, - bénéficient d une pérennité financière, l industriel finançant les coûts additionnels générés par les projets : personnel en CDD, stagiaires, missions éventuelles, petits matériels, etc. Les principaux partenaires stratégiques de l INRIA sont aujourd hui : Alcatel-Lucent, EDF, France Télécom Orange Labs, ST Microelectronics et Microsoft Research. Working with industry TOGETHER WITH INDUSTRY PARTNERS I M SETTING UP A COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH PROJECT, TO BE FUNDE FOR EXAMPLE BY THE FRENCH NATIONAL RESEARCH AGENCY (ANR), THE FRENCH CENTRAL INTERMINISTERIAL RESEARCH SUPPORT FUND (FUI) OR BY A EUROPEAN RESEARCH PROGRAM. WHOM SHOULD I CONTACT? Generally speaking, collaborative research projects with industry partners are not technology transfer projects. Nevertheless, they may lead to transfer opportunities, for instance to use the results in the business products. It is essential to define the terms and conditions of legal ownership, and the conditions under which the knowledge and the technologies employed (the research background) and the results, such as software or patented inventions (the foreground) may be exploited. In practice, these terms and conditions determine whether or not it is possible to transfer the results. Research projects in partnership with businesses generate results that may later be transferred. INRIA s strategic partnerships are research partnerships. Their main objective is to allow teams to place their collaboration within a joint bilateral and long-term program. Des partenaires potentiels se trouvent peut-être dans le «Club des PME partenaires de l INRIA» : innovantes, sensibles aux problématiques de transfert et capables d intégrer des technologies issues de la recherche, ces PME sont sollicitées régulièrement pour des événements et séminaires thématiques où vous pouvez les rencontrer. > Voir : CPPI p. 6, Responsable sectoriel p. 6 TRAVAILLER AVEC UNE PME Dans le cadre de sa mission de transfert, l INRIA a affiché son ambition d accompagner la croissance des PME innovantes. C est pourquoi l Institut a créé son «Programme PME» destiné à encourager et aider les équipes-projets à développer des partenariats de transfert avec des PME. L INRIA a ainsi mis en place un programme d actions destinées à stimuler les opportunités de transfert vers les PME innovantes : prospection par les responsables sectoriels du transfert, Rencontres INRIA Industries, partenariats avec les pôles de compétitivité, lettre d information et site web à destination des PME, etc. L INRIA a également créé les conditions de relations durables entre équipes-projets et PME, à travers des laboratoires communs : les I-Labs. Un I-Lab repose en particulier sur une feuille de route conséquente partagée avec une PME sur une période de 2-3 ans et un objectif de réalisation à vocation industrielle. Le label d'i-lab donne potentiellement accès à des ressources supplémentaires pour l équipe-projet INRIA : un budget de 20 k par an ; un ingénieur (embauché pour une période de 2 ans, reconductible à concurrence de 6 ans) ; des locaux spécifiques fournis par le Centre pour la collaboration et pour l accueil de personnels de la PME. Enfin l INRIA anime son «Club des PME partenaires», qui regroupe des entreprises innovantes souhaitant développer et entretenir des partenariats de transfert avec les équipes-projets INRIA. CRÉER SON ENTREPRISE La création d entreprise est un mode de transfert de technologies, qui se construit par conséquent dans un dialogue avec le CPPI et bénéficie de l accompagnement par les Responsables sectoriels, des recommandations du CSATT, et d éventuels moyens dédiés. A une certaine phase d avancement du projet, l INRIA peut inviter le porteur à entamer des échanges avec IT-Translation, en vue d un accompagnement spécifique. IT-Translation est une société qui offre ses services à l ensemble de la recherche publique dans le domaine du numérique. Co-fondée par l INRIA, elle a pour vocation de soutenir et d accompagner la création d entreprises issues de cette recherche. L offre d IT-Translation aux porteurs de projets d entreprise comporte trois volets : 1/ participation au capital de l entreprise (responsabilité de cofondateur), 2/ investissement financier de pré-amorcage, 3/ accompagnement opérationnel des dirigeants de l entreprise (stratégie, marketing, business développement, etc.). What about SMEs I WOULD LIKE TO WORK WITH AN SME, AND AN SME IS INTERESTED IN WHAT I AM DOING - HOW CAN WE WORK TOGETHER? Technology transfer to SMEs is in fact one of INRIA s priorities, so you can benefit from support from the SME Program. You should consult your Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officer (CPPI) in order to define and set up such a partnership. One way of collaborating could be for the SME and your project team to share a joint laboratory, or I-Lab. It will be monitored by the Technology Transfer Monitoring Committee (CSATT). Together you can approach the Technology Transfer Associates for help in analyzing industry demand, and to decide if there could be transfer opportunities. You may find potential partners in INRIA s SME Partners Club: such SMEs are innovative, aware of transfer issues, and capable of integrating research technologies. We invite them regularly to events and themed seminars, and you can meet them there. > See: Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officer p. 7, Technology Transfer Associate p. 7 WORKING WITH SMEs In supporting technology transfer, INRIA has a stated objective of helping to grow innovative SMEs. The Institute has created its SME Program to encourage and assist project teams in developing transfer partnerships with SMEs. INRIA has thus implemented a program of initiatives intended to stimulate opportunities for transfers to innovative SMEs. They include prospecting by the Technology Transfer Associates, INRIA Technology Showcases for Industry, partnerships with the Competitiveness Centers, and a newsletter and Web community platform for SMEs. INRIA has also created I-Labs, where project teams and SMEs work in joint laboratories and hence have the opportunity to build long-term relationships. The I-Lab requires both the project team and the SME to follow a detailed plan over a two-to three-year period. The aim is a result that is transferred to the SME. An INRIA project team with an I-Lab has access to additional resources, including a budget of 20,000 per year, an engineer (appointed for a two-year period, renewable for up to six years), and premises to accommodate SME staff specifically for the collaboration. Lastly, INRIA runs a SME Partners Club, which brings together innovative businesses wishing to develop and maintain technology transfer partnerships with INRIA project teams. CREATING YOUR BUSINESS Creating a business is one way of transferring technologies. Such a project is built up during discussions with the Technology Transfer and Partnerships Officer (CPPI), with guidance from the Technology Transfer Associates and the Technology Transfer Monitoring Committee s (CSATT) recommendations. It may also attract dedicated resources. Once the project is properly underway, INRIA may invite the leader to start discussions with IT-Translation, with a view to receiving specific support. IT-Translation is a company serving publicly-funded research into digital technologies. It was co-founded by INRIA and its aim is to support and assist the creation of research spin-offs. IT-Translation can offer sponsors of business-creation projects three types of support: 1/ It takes shares in the business capital (corporate co-founder), 2/ It invests seed finance, 3/ It offers the business directors coaching support (strategy, marketing, business development, etc.)
