5 Turi Finocchiaro Président du Best of Short Films Festival Poursuivre l aventure de Best Of International Short Films Festival m enchante et m électrise. Je dirige avec fierté ce Festival mais aussi avec défi: d où ma reconnaissance envers une équipe en partie remodelée et assoiffée d enthousiasme qui tient à sauvegarder l humour d origine et les saveurs d antan mais aussi à provoquer d autres couleurs... Ainsi le documentaire de création fait son entrée dans la séléction officielle des films de fiction et d animation; les films sont parsemés de rencontres; nos bras s ouvrent aux jumelages, aux expositions, aux ateliers et à des performances surprenantes comme la Painting Jam. Un souhait: que la Ciotat, pendant le Festival, se transforme en un lieu privilégié où l idée du «Best» prenne corps. Que le public sente le «meilleur» de divers points de vue et formes. Que la musique sur les places nous fasse frémir d allégresse. Peintres, musiciens et poètes naviguerons avec nous et ils nous apprendrons à danser... Que ces nouveautés fleurissent dans cet espace et nourrissent la magie de la Ciotat! Fixer son étoile signifie parvenir à intéresser un public de plus en plus large, l inspirer et générer de nouveaux désirs et passions sur cette merveilleuse ville qui depuis toujours symbolise le cinéma et aspire à la renaissance des années d or du grand Ecran. Par dessus tout un merci à mon prédécesseur et ami Yvan Le Moine pour sa présence bienveillante. Une gratitude sincère aux institutions pour leur confiance, fidélité et constant soutien La Ville de La Ciotat et la Région Sud. Le Best Of Festival atteint cette année un nouveau port d escale - la Médiathèque Simone-Veil - Merci pour son accueil et merci à la jeunesse du Lycée Lumière qui poursuit son aventure avec nous... Hissons les voiles et, ensemble, prenons le large et abandons-nous à nos émotions. Pour se sentir vivants plus que jamais! Turi Finocchiaro President of the Best of Short Films Festival Continuing the adventure of the Best of International Short Films Festival is delighting and thrilling to me. I prouldy manage this festival with a sense of challenge, hence ma gratitude towards a staff that s partly remodeled and thirsty for excitement and which insists on preserving the original humor and flavor of yesteryear but also provoke other colors... Thus the creative documentary genre makes its entrance into the official selection along with animation and fiction films; films are sprinkled with encounters; our arms open to twinnings, to exhibitions, to workshops and to surprising performances like the Painting Jam. One wish: that La Ciotat becomes, during the time of the festival, a priviliged place where the idea of «Best» turns into reality. That the audience feels the «best» of diverse points of view and forms. That the music played on the plazas make us shiver with joy. Painters, musicians & poets will navigate with us and they ll teach us how to dance... May these new features flourish in this place and may they nourish the magic of La Ciotat! Setting our course means managing to get a wider and wider audience interested, inspire it and generate new impulses and passions for this this marvelous city which has been sforever symbolising cinema and aspires to the rebirth of the folden years of the Big Screen. Most of all a big thanks to my predecessor and friend Yvan Le Moine for his ever benevolent presence. The Best of Festival reaches a new halt in its course: the Simone Veil Mediatheque. Many thanks for their welcome et thanks to the Lumière High School pupils who still go on this adventure with us... 6 Patrick Boré Maire de La Ciotat Premier Vice-président du Conseil départemental des Bouches-du-Rhône Vice-président de la Communauté urbaine Marseille Provence Métropole Depuis sa création en 2002, le Best Of International Short Films Festival est implanté à La Ciotat, berceau du cinéma mondial. Le public répond présent à chaque édition : c est une occasion exceptionnelle pour les spectateurs de découvrir de jeunes cinéastes talentueux. Le «Best Of» réunit une soixantaine de primés de festivals de courts-métrages. Un jury de professionnels concrétise cet événement en récompensant officiellement les meilleurs œuvres cinématographiques. La 17e édition sera une nouvelle fois rythmée par un programme de qualité, et quoi de plus authentique que l Eden-Théâtre, plus vieux cinéma du monde, pour accueillir cet événement. Je tiens à féliciter le président Turi Finocchiaro ainsi que les nombreux organisateurs pour leur véritable passion du cinéma. Le succès du festival en est la preuve. Bon festival à toutes et à tous! The audience answers the call for every edition : it s an exceptional occasion for the public to discover young talented film makers. The «Best of» gathers sixty festival awarded short films. A professional jury solidifies this event by officially awarding the best filmic works. The 17th edition will be picking up the pace once more with a quality programme and what s more authentic than the Eden Theater, the world s oldest movie theater, to welcome this event? I want to congratulate the director Turi Finocchiaro as well as the numerous organizers for their passion. The festival s success is proof of it. Enjoy the festival! 6

Depuis dix-sept ans, le Best Of International Short Films Festival confirme ce positionnement, donne une nouvelle dimension au domaine du court-métrage, et ne cesse de se développer. En accueillant des cinéastes et des réalisateurs en devenir, le festival attire au fil des années un public toujours plus nombreux. De talentueux cinéastes présentent leurs meilleures œuvres à un jury composé de spécialistes du cinéma. Du 24 au 30 septembre 2018, cette édition promet encore de belles surprises Je tiens à remercier Turi Finocchiaro, président et commandant en chef du festival, pour réussir à mobiliser autant de talents et ainsi proposer avec son équipe une semaine remplie d émotions. For seventeen years now, the Best of International Short Films Festival confirms this statement, gives a whole new dimension to short films as a genre and never ceases to grow. By welcoming film makers and directors in the becoming, the festival has been drawing an ever increasing audience through the years. Talented film makers present their best works to a jury composed of cinema experts. From September 24 th to 30 th 2018, this edition promises its share of good suprises... I want to thank Turi Finocchiaro, director and chief commander of the festival, to be able to mobilize so many talents and thus to offer, with his team, a week full of emotions. 10 LE JURY DE L ÉDITION 2018 Gaëlle Rodeville (France, Directrice de festival) Passionnée par l image, Gaëlle Rodeville a suivi des études de cinéma à la Sorbonne où elle a obtenu une maîtrise. Après avoir travaillé sur plusieurs autres festivals dans divers postes, en 1999, elle intègre l équipe du Festival international du Film d Aubagne et en devient la déléguée générale en Avid fan of movies, Gaëlle Rodeville graduated with a Masters degree at the Sorbone University. After working in various jobs in several festival, in 1999, she gets involved with the Aubagne Internationa Film Festival (FIFA) and becomes the festival manager in Mokhtar Ladjimi (Tunisie, Président de l Association des réalisateurs des Films Tunisiens (ARFT)) Né le 15 juillet 1957 à Monastir (Tunisie), Mokhtar Ladjimi est un réalisateur et scénariste tunisien diplômé de l IDHEC. Parmi ses nombreuses réalisations, figurent les documentaires Le cinéma Colonial (1997), Mille et une danses orientales (1999), L orient des cafés (2000) ou encore Noce d été (2005) qui l a fait connaître du grand public. En 2014, il réalise Dicta shot. Born July 15, 1957 in Monastir (Tunisia), Mokhtar Ladjimi is an Idhec graduate Tunisian director and screenwriter. Among his many accomplishments are documentaries like Le cinéma Colonial (1997), Mille et une danses orientales (1999), L orient des cafés (2000) or even Noce d été (2005) which introduced him to a wider audience. In 2014, he directed Dicta shot Nathalie Courville (Canada, Manageuse culturelle) Experte de la Communication, du Marketting et de la gestion d organisme et d évènements culturels, elle enseigne à plusieurs écoles à Montréal et Bruxelles. Elle est consultante en stratégie de financement d organismes divers et développe également l antenne québécoise de la plate-forme de financement participatif kiskissbankbank.com. Expert in PR & Marketting management as well as in cultural organizations and events and management, she teaches at several schooks in Montreal and Brussels. She s a consulting finance strategist for various organizations et also develops the quebec office of the crowdfunig site kisskissbankbank.com 10

11 Antonio Maiorino (Italie, Critique cinéma, opérateur culturel) Professeur d histoire de l art, journaliste et critique de cinéma. Sur l Art il a été publié sur Artribune, ArtsLife et Lobodilattice. Concernant le cinéma, il a été rédacteur en chef pour Sentieri Selvaggi, Ondacinema, Cabiria et Cinema Errante. Il a chroniqueur pour différentes stations de radio. Il effectue actuellement des interviews avec des réalisateurs et des acteurs pour le titre Infooggi et surtout, il dirige le festival du film La Città Incantata, dont il est co-fondateur. He teaches Art History and works as a journalist and film critic. He wrote about art for Artribune, Artslife, Lobodilattice and about cinema for Sentieri Selvaggi, Ondacinema, Cabiria and Cinema Errante. He also ran weekly programs about film releases for several radio stations. Currently he carries out interviews with directors and actors for Infoggi and, above all, directs La Città Incantata Film Festival, that he himself cofounded. Marylin Watelet (Belgique, Productrice et réalisatrice) Née à Bruxelles, elle débute à la télévision belge, fonde avec Chantal Akerman la société Paradise Films. Forte d une longue expérience, entre autres comme directrice de production et productrice de films de Chantal Akerman et d autres cinéastes, elle est aussi réalisatrice de films documentaires, notamment pour la radio. Elle est l administratrice associée de la fondation Chantal Akerman. Born in Brussels, she starts her career on Belgian TV et founds the production company Paradise Films with Chantal Akerman. She has a strong and varied experience as, among other roles, production manager for Chantal Akerman and several other film makers. She is also a documentary director, and notably on the radio. She the associate manager of the Chantal Akerman Foundation. 11

Son dernier film, A Drowning Man (2017) fait partie de la sélection officielle 2017 du Festival de Cannes. Mahdi Fleifel is a Danish-Palestinian film director who graduated in 2009 from the UK National Film & TV School. He is the co-founder of London-based production company Nakba FilmWorks. His latest film, A Drowning Man, formed part of the Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival. Alone and far from home, The Kid makes his way through a strange city looking for the means to get through his day. Charles grew up in a country town in northern Victoria, far from anything connected to filmmaking, except for an obsession with movies. 17 ALZHAÏMOUR (2017) Pierre Van De Kerckhove (Belgique) Journaliste de formation, après avoir tourné des films documentaires pendant 15 ans, Pierre Van de Kerckhove a finalisé son premier court métrage Alzhaïmour en avril Cette fiction a été réalisée sans budget et avec la collaboration bénévole de toute l équipe technique. Trained journalist, after 15 years of shooting documentary films, Pierre Van de Kerckhove has directed his first short fiction Alzhaimour in April This fiction was made with no budget and with the volunteer collaboration of his team members. Alzhaïmour Belgique Fiction 15 Couleur Louise est une dame âgée vivant dans un Institut spécialisé pour personnes atteintes d Alzheimer, où son quotidien n est plus que tristesse. L arrivée d un nouveau patient dans l institut va chambouler la vie de Louise. Louise is suffering from Alzheimer s disease and lives in a specialized nursing home. Her daily life is riddled with sadness. The arrival of a new patient in the home will turn Louise s life around. 18 AMEISE ANT FOURMI (2017) Julia Ocker (Allemagne) Julia Ocker est une réalisatrice d animation, designer et auteur basée à Stuttgart. Entre 2006 et 2012, elle a étudié l animation à la Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. Ses films abordent de nombreux sujets, de son drame sombre et inquiétant «Kellerkind» à l ingénieusement drôle «Zebra». En 2017, Julia a créé une série de courts d animation au sujet d animaux nommée «Animanimals». Julia Ocker is an animation director, designer and writer based in Stuttgart. From 2006 to 2012 she studied Animation at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. Her films cover a wide range of subjects, from her dark and frightening drama «Kellerkind» to the ingeniously funny «Zebra». In 2017 Julia made a whole series of animal films called «Animanimals». Ameise Allemagne Animation 4 Couleur Les fourmis travaillent en harmonie. Cependant, l une d entre elles fait les choses différemment. Ants work together perfectly. 19 BACKSTORY (2016) Joschka Laukeninks (Allemagne) Joschka est né à Hambourg en Après avoir terminé l école, il a décidé de ne pas entrer à l université de Berlin et de poursuivre sa passion pour la création audiovisuelle. Il s est bâti une carrière dans la réalisation de publicités tout en poursuivant la réalisation de court-métrages. Joschka was born and raised in Hamburg, Germany in After finishing school, he decided not to take his place at the Berlin University, but instead follow his true passion for creating moving images and sounds. He built a career as a commercial director and pursues artistic filmmaking. Backstory Allemagne Fiction 8 Couleur Enfant, notre protagoniste est abandonné par sa mère et doit vivre avec un père violent. Il survit à l adolescence et tombe amoureux de la femme de ses rêves. Lorsque tout semble aller pour le mieux, un événement soudain renverse le cours de sa vie à jamais. As a young child our protagonist is left by his mother and has to live with his violent father. He fights his way through adolescence and falls in love with the woman of his dreams and just as everything seems to be finally working out for him, a sudden event changes the course of his life forever. 20 BELLE À CROQUER DELECTABLE YOU (2017) Axel Courtière (France) Axel Courtière est un réalisateur qui aime mêler fiction et animation. Après des études à l ESAG Penninghen et la réalisation de son premier court métrage «Happy End» Axel travaille en tant que directeur artistique, puis réalisateur sur de nombreux films publicitaires. En 2016, Axel réalise son troisième court-métrage «Belle à Croquer» un film fantastique à l univers très travaillé, sur lequel il a travaillé pendant plus de cinq ans. Axel Courtiere is a director who loves mixing fiction and animation. After studying at the ESAG Penninghen and shooting his first short film «Happy End», Axel works as an artistic director and commercial director. In 2016, Axel directs his third short, «Delectable You», a fantastic film with very strong visuals, on which he worked for over five years. Belle à croquer France Fiction 8 Couleur Oscar Mongoût, cannibale gourmet, brûle d amour pour sa voisine d immeuble, la très végétale Mlle Carotte. Cette passion semble vouée à l échec : elle est végétarienne tandis qu il souffre d une phobie totale des légumes. Tout bascule le soir où elle l invite à dîner. Oscar Mongoût, a gourmet cannibal, burns with love for his neighbor, the very vegetal Miss Carrot. This passion seems destined to failure: she is a vegetarian, while he suffers from a strong phobia of vegetables. Things take a drastic turn the evening she invites him to dinner. Au fil de la soirée, le comportement des adultes lui paraît de plus en plus étrange. Et personne ne semble avoir remarqué l ombre qui déambule dans la maison. Marall follows her parents to a party and they want her to behave. As the evening progresses she finds the adults behaviour increasingly strange. Everyone at the party is trying to fit in, but not everyone succeeds. Marall also seems to be the only one seeing the shadow circulating inside the house. 57 WOLTA VOLTE (2017) Monika Kotecka & Karolina Poryzała (Pologne) Monica Kotecka (née en 1981) est une photographe de formation et une cinéaste spontanée. Elle a étudié les Sciences Sociales puis la réalisation. Elle a fait de nombreux courts-métrages qui ont voyagé à l international. Elle a animé des ateliers de cinéma pour enfants en Pologne et ailleurs. Karolina Poryzala (née en 1978) est une photographe et scénariste. Elle a étudié la zoologie et la biologie. Puis, elle s est orienté vers un cours de réalisation de 3 ans. Aujourd hui elle travaille sur des scnénarii de séries télé et développe son premier longmétrage. Wolta Pologne Documentaire 14 Couleur Zuzia a douze ans et elle s entraîne en tant que voltigeuse équestre depuis plusieurs années. Elle est la pierre angulaire de leur pyramide humaine. Une nouvelle saison intensive commence et il se trouve que les figures qu elle exécute manquent de grâce et de légèreté. Elle va devoir trouver un nouveau rôle au sein du groupe. Zuzia is twelve and she s been training as an equestrian vaulter for several years. She s the top mounter, the capstone crowning their human pyramid. Avec près de 300 films, il propose une compétition nationale et internationale de courts et longs métrages, des rétrospectives et des programmes spéciaux, des événements, comme sa célèbre Nuit animée, des expositons, des ateliers. Il dispose aussi d un volet professionnel intitulé Futuranima, proposant conférences, rencontres et masterclass. Plus de 80 invités internationaux y viennent chaque année pour y présenter leur film et parler de leur métier. Anima fait partie de l organisation des European Animation Awards et des Magritte du cinéma. Il est un des festivals qualifiant pour les Oscar du court métrage d animation. Le festival Anima se prolonge toute l année avec les Samedis d Anima, des séances pédagogiques destinées aux enfants, la parution des Best of Anima, des dvd reprenant une sélection des meilleurs courts de l année et la diffusion du programme Anima on Tour. 64 CARTES BLANCHES Lundi 24 septembre à 10h à la Médiathèque Simone Veil, Rue de l Hôpital La Ciotat (Entrée libre) CARTE BLANCHE AU FAITO DOC FESTIVAL, Situé en Italie, sur le Monte Faito, belvédère sur la baie de Naples, le Vésuve et la côte de Sorrente, le Faito Doc - festival international et thématique du documentaire de création - ouvre sa 12ème édition cet été, en Trente documentaires courts et longs sont minutieusement sélectionnés, en particulier des films poétiques avec une forme et un point de vue original, en empathie avec les personnages et qui tressent des correspondances entre art et vie. Les Ateliers et évènements collatéraux font écho au thème choisi. La qualité des films projetés, le choix du jury, les rencontres avec les réalisateurs fidélisent un public engagé qui revient et entraîne de toute part de l Europe d autres spectateurs curieux. Les courts métrages sont depuis toujours les premières œuvres de cinéastes engagés dans le domaine de l audiovisuel et des œuvres où ils se sont formés des réalisateurs, acteurs, scénaristes, artistes et techniciens avant de se lancer dans le grand cinéma. Le concours «CortoDino» est né du désir de se souvenir et de célébrer, dans sa ville natale et en termes non seulement commémoratifs, la figure et le travail de ce producteur. 64

Une performance pour le plaisir et l ivresse des sens guidée par le chanteur libanais Pôl Seïf. Le coup de pinceau de Madior vont interagir avec le chant, la musique, la poésie et la danse improvisée du public jusqu à l exécution complète de l oeuvre. En décembre 2009 elle participe à la Biennale Internationale d Arts Contemporain de Florence en Italie. Corrine Bartalini was born on December 6th in La Ciotat, France. She studies Visual Expression at the Arts and Architecture School in Marseille. From 1987 to 2005 she was a projectionist at the Lumière Theater in La Ciotat.
