2 A. Le futur p. 201 The tense is used to describe what people WILL DO, what WILL HAPPEN. The verbs in the following sentences are in the future tense. L avion partira dans dix minutes. Nous irons en France cet été. The plane will leave in ten minutes. We will go to France this summer. The future tense is a SIMPLE tense. It is formed as follows: STEM + ENDINGS

Si le bus n arrive pas, If the bus does not come, nous prendrons le train. we will take the train. Si passe par l agence de voyages, j achèterai les billets. If I go by the travel agency, I will buy the tickets. The above sentences express what WILL HAPPEN if a certain condition is met. They consist of two parts: the si (if) clause, which expresses the condition the result clause, which tells what WILL HAPPEN

11 C. L usage du futur après quand p. 204 Compare the use of tenses in French and English in the following sentences. J attacherai ma ceinture I will fasten my seat belt quand l avion partira. when the plane leaves. Quand nous arriverons à Paris, nous passerons par la douane. When we arrive in Paris, we will go through customs. When referring to future events, the French use the future tense in both the quand (when) clause and the main clause. The pattern is: quand-clause: Quand j aurai de l argent, result clause: voyagerai.

12 C. L usage du futur après quand p. 204 The future is also used after quand when the main clause is in the IMPERATIVE and a future event is implied. Écris-moi quand tu seras à Nice. Write me when you are in Nice.

13 D. Le conditionnel p. 207 In the sentences below, the verbs in heavy print are in the CONDITIONAL. Si c était les vacances,... The CONDITIONAL is a simple tense which is formed as follows: STEM + IMPERFECT ENDINGS
