LEÇON 13 Le français pratique: Allons au spectacle Cultural Commentary Soccer games between various cities in France generate as much spirit and enthusiasm as do football games in the United States. In fact, sports in general are widely practiced, though not in connection with school, which is considered an academic domain. In general, one out of three French people engage in an individual sport (jogging, biking) and one in fifteen participate in a team sport (soccer, volleyball). Students tend to go to the movies on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday afternoons because there is no school at that time. French teenagers visit museums more frequently that American teenagers do. There are 45 museums in Paris alone, with a wide range of subject matter from modern art to natural or military history to the sewers and catacombs. Several famous artists (Picasso, Delacroix, Rodin, etc.) have museums dedicated entirely to their work. La Fête de la Musique is celebrated throughout France on June 21. Montréal also plays host to one of the largest international jazz festivals every summer in early July. The Festival de Film at Cannes draws people from around the world actors, actresses, producers, directors, writers, and onlookers to the south of France for a two week period every May. Cinema is considered the 7th art, and the French are rightly proud of this heritage. The year 2003 will see the 56th annual celebration with over 900 screenings. The city expects to welcome over 200,000 people. This entrance to the métro is in an Art Deco design. There are 368 métro stations in the Paris area. The green cross is the symbol used to indicate a pharmacie. p. 24
