U ne culture humaniste A humanist culture at the service of scientific training e2 L es sections Arts-Etudes au service de la formation scientifique L Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon, une des plus grandes écoles d ingénieurs françaises, forme en cinq ans des ingénieurs hautement qualifiés. INSA Lyon, the biggest and one of the best engineering universities in France, trains highly qualified engineers in five years. INSA is a member of the Lyon University group. Avec ses 5 400 étudiants, ses 1000 ingénieurs diplômés par an, ses 20 laboratoires de recherche, l INSA de Lyon est une école d excellence ouverte sur le monde. With its 5400 students, 1 000 engineering diplomas a year, 20 research laboratories, INSA Lyon is a school of excellence open to the world. Dès la fondation de l école, en 1957, a été créé un Centre des Humanités dont les formations viennent en complément des enseignements de sciences exactes. Celles-ci visent à confronter les étudiants à des modes de pensée différents et à les ouvrir à la complexité multiforme du réel. Cette ouverture est particulièrement développée grâce aux sections qui permettent d approfondir un domaine particulier de l art. When the school was founded in 1957, a Humanities Centre was created teaching courses complementary to the courses in the exact sciences. They aim to bring students into contact with different ways of thinking and open their minds to the complexity of the world. The artistic groups especially encourage and develop this approach. «C est un apprentissage de la tolérance par l humilité.» > chap.1 Rémi Théâtre-Etudes, créée en 1991, est une des quatre sections artistiques de l INSA de Lyon : Musique-Etudes (1984), Arts-Plastiques-Etudes (1987), Théâtre-Etudes (1991) et DanseEtudes (1991). Un dispositif du même ordre existe aussi dans les INSA de Rouen, de Rennes et de Toulouse. T he Arts-Studies groups The Theatre-Studies group, created in 1991, is one of the four artistic groups which recruits students at INSA Lyon, the others being MusicStudies (since 1984), Plastic ArtsStudies (since 1987) and Dance-Studies (since 1991). A similar system also functions at INSA Rouen, INSA Rennes and INSA Toulouse. «The theatre is an apprenticeship of tolerance through humility.» Rémi 3f
«Pour moi, Théâtre-Etudes : c était un rêve, c est maintenant un plaisir immense, et ce sera très certainement un agréable souvenir.» Fanette «For me, Theatre-Studies used to be a dream ; now it s a tremendous pleasure, and it will certainly become a fond memory.» Fanette La section Théâtre-Etudes Le métier d ingénieur requiert, de plus en plus, des capacités à établir des relations avec autrui, communiquer avec aisance, contribuer, par sa créativité, à un travail d équipe, et collaborer avec des professionnels de culture humaniste ou artistique. La section Théâtre-Etudes propose les objectifs suivants : - explorer ses propres limites et sa liberté par l improvisation, sous la direction de comédiens, - découvrir les textes théâtraux et participer à un travail collectif de réalisation avec un metteur en scène, - valider des connaissances techniques par la conception d éclairage et la régie des spectacles, - se constituer une culture vivante par la fréquentation d œuvres et de créateurs. Théâtre-Etudes offre une formation artistique complémentaire aux études d ingénieur pour environ 80 étudiants, pendant quatre ans. Ces derniers bénéficient en moyenne de 6 à 8 heures d enseignements théoriques et pratiques par semaine, encadrés par des professionnels du spectacle, avec la perspective d une plus grande autonomie au fil de la formation. Ils peuvent choisir entre deux cursus de formation distincts : l option jeu et l option lumière et son. Working as an engineer increasinly requires skill in: - establishing relations with others, - communicating effectively, - contributing creatively to team work, - collaborating with professionals from either a humanistic or artistic background. The training aims at the following goals: To explore one s own limits and freedom through improvisation, under the supervision of actors. To discover plays and texts and take part in team production, under a director s supervision. To validate technical knowledge by learning creative lighting and stage management. To enrich personal culture through contacts with works of art and with artists. Theatre-Studies offers artistic training complementary to engineering studies to about 80 students over four years. The students get on average 6 to 8 hours theoretical and practical teaching a week, given by professionals in the performing arts, with the aim of reaching progressively greater student autonomy as the course progresses. L option JEU The ACTING option «L art ne supporte pas la médiocrité. Je pense à tous ces étudiants qui n ont jamais pris de claques dans la vie et qui ont des tas d occasions de se composer une image, de copier sur le voisin. Le théâtre ne supporte pas la triche, l hypocrisie Il impose le travail sur soi et la sincérité.» Ludovic Le programme général de la formation autour du jeu est modulable selon les projets menés dans l année : - atelier fondamental : voix, corps, espace, improvisations, - mise en scène et travail des textes, - analyse de pièces, histoire du théâtre, - atelier d écriture, commande de textes d auteurs contemporains. Les cours sont dispensés par des professionnels du spectacle, reconnus pour leurs qualités pédagogiques et artistiques. Aujourd hui, Davyd Chaumard (Cie Marche Au Vol), Nicolas Ramond (Cie les Transformateurs), Michel Véricel (Cie Michel Véricel), Didier Vidal (Cie de l Iris) figurent parmi les metteurs en scène intervenants. The general syllabus concerning acting can be modulated according to the projects undertaken during the year : - Basic workshop : voice, body, space, improvisations ; - Directing and working on the texts ; - Analysis of plays, the history of the theatre ; - Writing workshop, commissioning of texts from contemporary authors. The courses are taught by theatre professionals who are well-known for their pedagogical and artistic talent. Today, Davyd Chaumard (the Marche Au Vol company), Nicolas Ramond (the Transformateurs company), Michel Véricel (the Michel Véricel company), Didier Vidal (the Iris company) are among the teaching staff. Chaque groupe d étudiants présente au moins une pièce par an. Tous les spectacles de la section Théâtre-Etudes sont créés à la Rotonde de l INSA de Lyon (salle de 400 places). Ces productions sont gratuites et ouvertes à tous : ainsi, au-delà des étudiants formés au sein de la section, la découverte des arts et des pratiques culturelles bénéficie à tout le campus. Plusieurs de ces créations ont été reprises dans des théâtres professionnels de la région. La section a également accueilli à plusieurs reprises des résidences de compagnies professionnelles : par exemple la Cie Premier Acte de Sarkis Tcheumlekdjian (1997-99), la Cie Marche au Vol (2007-10) et travaille en collaboration avec des écrivains (Jean-Yves Picq, Lilian Lloyd). Each year-group of students presents at least one play per year. All the plays put on by the Theatre-Studies group are staged in the INSA Rotonde (400 seats). These productions are free and open to all : thus, beyond the students in the group, the discovery of arts and cultural practices benefits the entire campus. Several creations have been put on by professional theatres in the region. The group has regularly had professional companies in residence : for example Sarkis Tcheumlekdjian s Premier Acte company (1997-99), the Marche au Vol company (2007-10)... and works in collaboration with writers (Jean-Yves Picq, Lilian Lloyd). > chap.3 «Art and mediocrity make poor bedfellows. I m thinking of all those students who have always had an easy life and who have all sorts of opportunities to project an image of themselves, to copy from their neighbours, to profit from other people s work. L option LUMIERE ET SON Un parcours artistique basé sur les aspects techniques (lumière, son, vidéo, régie ) du spectacle vivant est proposé aux étudiants désireux de s orienter vers la création scénographique. La base de la formation commune aux étudiants de l option lumière et son consiste en un enseignement préalable dans le domaine de la sécurité et dans le champ de la création artistique : analyse d œuvres théâtrales, histoire de la danse ou introduction culturelle à la création lumière. Chaque étudiant peut ensuite construire son cursus au sein de l offre de formation selon ses affinités artistiques : création et régie son, lumière, vidéo, régie générale. La plupart des cours sont dispensés à l INSA, dans des lieux adaptés. «Une touche d humanité entre deux intégrales» Julien «A little humanity between two equations» Julien T he LIGHTING and SOUND option e8 Ils sont encadrés par des professionnels du spectacle, qu ils soient scénographes, vidéastes, régisseurs, acousmaticiens, éclairagistes, sonorisateurs, etc. Aujourd hui, les professionnels suivants transmettent leur métier aux étudiants : Marc Favre, David Debrinay, Guillaume Noël, Franck Besson, Catherine Demeure A course based on lighting, sound, video, stage management, etc is offered to students more interested in the technical aspects of theatrical creation. The basis of the common training for students in the lighting and sound option consists of a preliminary course in safety and in artistic creation : the analysis of plays, the history of the dance or a cultural introduction to creative lighting. Each student can then construct his course within the offered range of possibilities according to his personal artistic taste : sound, lighting, video, stage management Most of the teaching is done at INSA in appropriate locales. They are taught by theatre professionals whether they be stage designers, video directors, stage managers, acousticians, lighting or sound engineers, etc. Today, the following professionals transmit their know-how to the students : Marc Favre, David Debrinay, Guillaume Noël, Franck Besson, Catherine Demeure > chap.4 U n Mastère de Direction technique du spectacle vivant La section Théâtre-Etudes a créé A postgraduate In 2001, the Theatre-Studies group created, in partnership with ENSATT (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Techniques du Théâtre / The National School of Theatre Art and Techniques) a diploma oriented towards the profession of stage manager for live performances. This thirteenmonth course accepts young engineers who already have some experience of the theatre and its technical aspects, alongside more experienced stage managers who wish to widen their field of competence. Once they obtain their diploma, they take on a post of responsibility in theatres, stage design research groups or the preparation of live performances. en 2001, en partenariat avec l ENSATT (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Techniques du Théâtre) un diplôme professionnalisant de formation au métier de directeur technique du spectacle vivant. Ce cursus en treize mois accueille de jeunes ingénieurs, ayant déjà l expérience de la scène et de ses aspects techniques, aux côtés de régisseurs plus confirmés, qui souhaitent faire évoluer leurs compétences. «Le théâtre a joué un rôle dans mes études, en me dévoilant de nouvelles façons de faire travailler mon esprit, à travers l analyse de situations, de personnages, de contextes, en faisant appel à l imagination, la mémoire, l écoute, le corps et la voix. Un travail complet à mon sens.» Valérie Les étudiants se constituent une culture vivante par la fréquentation d oeuvres et de créateurs, grâce à la richesse culturelle de l agglomération lyonnaise et à une offre très dense de spectacles (opéra, danse, théâtre, performances, expositions ). Les pièces choisies pour les créations de la section Théâtre-Etudes permettent aux étudiants de connaître et de jouer des auteurs du répertoire (Shakespeare, Marivaux, Tchekhov, Pirandello, Brecht ) et des textes contemporains (Durringer, Kateb, Visniec, Melquiot, De Vos, Bond ). Une soixantaine de spectacles ont ainsi été créés de 1991 à 2009. De plus, les initiatives de petits groupes d étudiants aboutissent à des réalisations variées dans des champs plus ouverts : clown, improvisation, commedia dell arte, etc. e10 Furthermore, the initiatives of small groups of students lead to varied shows in a wider range of performance : the art of the clown, improvisation, commedia dell arte, etc. Théâtre-Etudes et les autres sections artistiques de l INSA sont également le berceau d initiatives fortes : par exemple l association Rêve de Foin, créée en 1997, est née du désir d un groupe d anciens étudiants de poursuivre leur pratique artistique à la sortie de l école. Theatre Studies and the other artistic groups at INSA are also the cradle of striking initiatives : for example the Rêve de Foin (Hay Dreams) association, founded in 1997, came from the desire of former students to continue their artistic practice after leaving INSA. The students construct for themselves a living culture by contact with works and creative artists, thanks to the cultural wealth of Lyon and a very wide variety of possibilities (opera, danse, theatre, performances, exhibitions ). The plays chosen for performance by the Theatre Studies group enable the students to get to know and perform in plays from the classical repertory (Shakespeare, Marivaux, Chekhov, Pirandello, Brecht ) and contemporary texts (Durringer, Kateb, Visniec, Melquiot, De Vos, Edward Bond ). About sixty plays have been put on since 1991 (up to 2009). > chap.5 O uvertures O penings La section est aussi ouverte vers l extérieur et initie des projets audelà des frontières du campus. Un atelier de théâtre citoyen a notamment été mené dans le quartier de la Duchère à Lyon, en pleine rénovation urbaine. The group is also open to off-campus projects. A citizens theatre workshop was notably set up in the Duchère district in the middle of ur ban renovation. «Theatre played a role in my studies by revealing new ways of making my mind work through analysing situations, characters, using my imagination and memory, learning to listen and use my body and my voice. A rts et sciences A rts and sciences «Le théâtre est pour moi une fenêtre à travers laquelle on peut regarder le monde extérieur, mais aussi une fenêtre que l on peut ouvrir, pour une bouffée d air ou pour passer de l autre côté. Le théâtre n est pas le seul moyen pour enjamber la fenêtre, mais il est celui qui permet de regarder en soi autrement, et aussi d apprendre l Autre.» Une des caractéristiques de l enseignement français, tant scolaire qu universitaire, est la fracture qu il instaure entre les domaines littéraire et artistique, d une part et, de l autre, les domaines scientifique et technique. Les sections Arts-Etudes proposent une complémentarité de ces deux champs, mais plusieurs de nos recherches en théâtre ont tenté d explorer plus organiquement les liens possibles entre l imaginaire d artistes et celui de scientifiques. Ainsi avons-nous travaillé à créer un texte qu A. Gatti venait d écrire en 2003 sur la physique quantique. One of the traits of the French education system, at school or at university, is the hiatus it creates between the literary and artistic fields on the one hand, and the scientific and technical fields on the other. The Arts-Studies groups try to make them complementary, and several of our theatrical projects have tried to explore more organically the possible links between artistic and scientific imagination. A text which A. Gatti had just written in 2003 on quantum physics was put on by us. Puis inventé une performance autour du concept d émergence dans les systèmes complexes, en 2007. Enfin exploré de manière ludique le «bricolage» analysé par LéviStrauss, à l occasion de ses 100 ans en 2008. Then, in 2007, a performance was put on around the concept of emergence in complex systems. The latest creation was a playful exploration of Lévi-Strauss s concept of bricolage (DIY), in celebration of his 100th birthday in 2008. > chap.7 Carole I nternational I nternational La section Théâtre-Etudes contribue régulièrement à la poursuite du développement international de l INSA, vitrine forte de son image dans toutes ses missions et dimensions. La section, membre de l Association Internationale du Théâtre à l Université (A.I.T.U.) qui regroupe 250 institutions, a d ores et déjà participé à une quarantaine de festivals en France et à l étranger. The Theatre Studies group regularly contributes to the ongoing international development of INSA, as an attractive showcase for its image in all its missions and dimensions. The group is a member of the International University Theatre Association (I.U.T.A) which includes 250 institutions and has already participated in about forty festivals in France and abroad. Ces participations à des festivals internationaux de théâtre universitaire offrent aux étudiants une ouverture culturelle, en renforçant aussi les échanges scientifiques entre l INSA et des universités étrangères. This participation in international festivals of university theatre give the students an even wider culture, also reinforcing scientific exchanges between INSA and foreign universi ties. > chap.8 A. Modalités d inscription L admission se fait, sur candidature, à partir de la deuxième année INSA ; cependant une initiation est proposée au deuxième semestre de la première année. La sélection se fait sur des critères de motivation pour le théâtre et des résultats scolaires suffisamment bons pour permettre à l étudiant(e) de mener à bien ses études et son activité artistique. Enrollment Admission is dependent upon application from the second year at INSA onwards ; however, an initiation is offered in the second semester of the first year. Selection depends on criteria of motivation for the theatre, and school results good enough to enable the student to advance positively on both fronts (studies and artistic activity).
