Message from the President Le mot du Président In September 2005 the steel construction industry will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS). This is an ideal opportunity to organise an International Symposium on Architecture and Steel. The International Symposium will be held in the magnificent city of Nice from 20-21 September 2005. For the past 50 years, through ECCS and its national association members, the steel construction industry has been exchanging ideas and information on the development of its markets both in Europe and overseas. During the period 1955-2005 Europe has seen and undergone many diverse changes in the use of steel in construction with the evolution of architecture. The International Symposium will feature prominent speakers from the world of architecture and engineering who will focus on the many changes during the last 50 years, and will also look to the future. A public exhibition, 50 Years of Steel Architecture in Europe will also be open in Nice during this time and will illustrate the many changes in architecture. The International Symposium will close with the presentation ceremony of the European Steel Design Awards, which are given in recognition of outstanding design in steel construction. En septembre 2005 notre Profession célèbrera le 50 ème anniversaire de la création de son organisation européenne, la Convention Européenne de la Construction Métallique (C.E.C.M.) en organisant un symposium international «Architecture et Acier» qui se tiendra dans la magnifique cité de Nice. 1955 2005, voilà en effet un demi siècle que la construction métallique européenne s est dotée d une structure d échanges regroupant l ensemble de nos organisations nationales pour travailler et réfléchir au développement de la construction métallique en Europe et au-delà. Pendant cette même période l Europe est née, les techniques ont considérablement évolué ; il en est de même des ouvrages construits et par delà les fondamentaux qui perdurent, de l architecture métallique en perpétuelle création. Par leur vision de cette période, d éminents spécialistes, architectes ou ingénieurs mettront en lumière les principales étapes de cette évolution, dégageant ainsi, des pistes de réflexion et développement pour l avenir. Une exposition publique «50 ans d architecture métallique» s en fera l écho. En clôture du symposium aura lieu la cérémonie de remise des prix d architecture de la C.E.C.M. A l exceptionnelle qualité des orateurs réunis correspond le cadre prestigieux de la cité de Nice que nous avons choisi. Je serai heureux de vous y accueillir au Palais de la Méditerranée.
