Parlons du Passé: Passé Composé v. Imparfait
There are four past tenses in French. We have been studying two: 1. the passé composé 2. the imperfect 3. the plus-que-parfait 4. the passé simple
le passé composé You use the passé composé to describe: A specific action-j ai mangé un sandwich. Sudden actions-le téléphone a sonné. An action that took place at a specific point in the past Il a plu dimanche soir. An action with a limited duration-il a plu pendant quarante jours.
Some expressions used with the passé composé un jour une année hier hier matin (après-midi, soir) la semaine dernière le mois dernier l année dernière lundi (mardi, mercredi, etc. ) dernier l été (l hiver, etc.) dernier vendredi (samedi, etc.) soir (matin, etc.) pendant heures/jours/etc.
the passé composé You need two words to form the passé composé: 1. a form of the verb avoir or être in the present tense 2. a past participle
avoir- to have j ai tu as il/elle/on a nous avons vous avez ils/elles ont
être- to be je suis tu es il/elle/on est nous sommes vous êtes ils/elles sont
le passé composé You form the past participles of regular verbs according to the pattern below: -er é -ir i -re u parler parlé choisir choisi vendre vendu
le passé composé Some verbs have irregular past participles. They must be memorized!

Passé Composé with être Certain verbs require a form of être instead of avoir as their helping verb in the passé composé.
Passé Composé with être Devenir (devenu) Revenir (revenu) and Monter (monté) Rentrer (rentré) Sortir (sorti) Venir (venu) Aller (allé) Naître (né) Descendre (descendu) Entrer dans (entré) Retourner (retourné) Tomber (tombé) Rester (resté) Arriver (arrivé) Mourir (mort) Passer par (passé) Partir (parti) And all reflexive verbs!
Passé Composé with être When you form the passé composé with être, the past participle agrees with the subject.
Le Passé Composé avec être Ryan est allé au cinéma hier soir. Courtney est allée au cinéma, aussi. Ryan et Courtney sont allés au cinéma. Sarah et Stéphanie sont allées au cinéma, aussi. Claire s est habillée tôt. MAIS... Claire s est brossé les dents.
Negation of passé composé subject + ne + (reflexive pronoun +) a form of avoir or être + pas (jamais, plus, rien) + past participle + rest of the sentence
Negation of the passé composé Je n ai pas vu ce film. Nous ne sommes pas allés au cinéma hier soir. Nicole ne s est pas réveillée tôt.
L Imparfait
You use the imperfect... To describe habitual actions in the past Quand j étais petite, j allais à l école tous les jours. (When I was little, I used to go to school every day.)
You use the imperfect... When there is a notion of description (age, appearance, physical condition, location, time, weather, emotions, desires, and attitudes) Quand j avais six ans,... (When I was 6 years old ) L homme était grand. (The man was tall.) J étais en classe. (I was in class.) Le vieux chien était en bonne santé. (The old dog was in good health.) Mon frère était triste... (My brother was sad...) Il était neuf heures et demie... (It was 9:30 ) Il faisait froid. (It was cold.)
You use the imperfect... When there is the notion of an action in progress in the past: Je faisais du ski quand je suis tombée. (I was skiing when I fell.) Nous regardions la télé quand le téléphone a sonné. (We were watching TV when the phone rang.)
You use the imperfect... With certain verbs: avoir être adorer aimer croire détester espèrer penser pouvoir savoir vouloir In fact, it s difficult to make a mistake if you use these verbs in the imperfect! BUT: Je le savais.-i knew it. (state of mind) Je l ai su. I learned it, heard of it. (event)
You use the imperfect... When you want to say, was/were -ing, used to... Vous regardiez la télé quand je suis entrée. (You were watching TV when I came in.) Quand j étais petite, j habitais une vieille maison. (When I was little, I used to live in an old house.)
Some expressions used with the toujours tous les jours parfois quelquefois autrefois en général généralement habituellement d habitude imperfect: souvent de temps en temps rarement le lundi (mardi, mercredi, etc.) le matin (l aprèsmidi, etc.) toutes les semaines (tous les mois, toutes les années, etc.)
The Formation of the Imperfect To find the imperfect stem, start with the nous-form of the present tense. Then remove -ons: nous parlons parlnous finissons finissnous répondons répondnous allons allnous pouvons pouv-...etc. (This works for all regular and irregular verbs except être.) DR.OBAC, 2012
