Destruction and Renewal in the Paintings of Asma Fayoumi By Maymanah Farhat For over forty years, artist Asma Fayoumi has been tapping into the Arab world s collective consciousness while it contends with fluctuating culture and continuous political turmoil. Drawing from a variety of sources, she has chronicled life s victories and challenges. From topics such as the onset of war to motherhood, she has approached painting with a deep sensitivity and observation. Although often depicting the world around her, she remains highly introspective, as her works emanate with a gripping emotional power. 5 Like many great artists, Fayoumi s talent has been a lifetime in the making. Born in Amman, Jordan in 1943, she was surrounded by art and culture as a child. By the time she reached the Faculty of Fine Arts in the 1960s, she had already trained with Ramzia Zambarakji, who was well known in Damascene art circles. It was there, at the University of Damascus, that Fayoumi experienced her formative years as an artist, studying under Italian painter Guido La Regina, an innovator of a particular school of abstraction in Syria. During this time she also worked alongside young artists Assaad Arabi, Faek Dahdouh and Sakher Farzat, who became important to the local art scene shortly after graduating. Fayoumi and her colleagues emerged at a vital juncture in Arab visual culture, when modernist movements were beginning to lay the ground work for contemporary art and painters and sculptors pushed for more creative freedom. This meant the greater incorporation of international influences and a noticeable
aim of breaking the boundaries of regional art, which had focused on more traditional selections of subject matter and medium. In 1966 Fayoumi s solo exhibition garnered significant attention in Syria, as audiences began to take note of her stirring abstract compositions. Speaking to the emotive intuition of viewers, these works relied on the reinvention of shapes and the depicting of forms solely through color and brushstrokes. Her popular paintings of Old Damascus, for example, sought to extract the essence of the city s celebrated streets rather than rendering it in its physicality, a technique that was groundbreaking and new in Syrian art. For the artist, abstraction means destroying and rebuilding. Reconfiguring every element of the pictorial plane, she strived to see the spirit of things. Women often feature prominently in her compositions, taking on Coming into her own amidst an exciting, albeit difficult, period in the universal narratives, not just those particular to their gender. Fayoumi modern Middle East, she quickly turned from working in the abstract does so within a larger tradition that she helped fashion, one in style she had helped initiate to incorporating expressionist approaches which female figures become powerful allegorical representations for in figurative compositions. This new direction not only stemmed notions of homeland, survival and strength. This was evident in early from the rapid cultural transformations that were taking place but the Arab modernism as seen in the paintings of Egyptian pioneer Gazbia 6 overwhelming need to address the abject circumstances of the day. Sirry and extending well into the contemporary period of art with the Recalling this significant transition the artist has said: 7 After the 1967 war, I wanted to get one step closer to people. Political events push you to communicate through signs and symbols we held a mobile exhibition. Our paintings toured Syria in protest of the war. Do you think it was possible to protest through abstraction? I had to say something to people. With this profound recognition of the region s shifting sociopolitical landscape, Fayoumi integrated her abstract methods with an outpouring of political commentary, one that joined the symbolic with the reality of devastation. Reflecting on this aspect of her work, the artist concludes: I try to take my internal emotions to my painting. I feel tired and suffer if I don t put those things in my [work]. Apparently, I look to be quiet, but my voice and irritation show in the painting. It s an explosion of an internal struggle. Fayoumi s gift is her ability to mine the internal while addressing the external. This has remained a constant throughout her career, as her oeuvre is colored with numerous canvases addressing the brutal nature of war and its excruciating consequences. Of these beginnings, the artist says, I m not politicized but I live the obsession of my homeland. Eyes and houses started to surface in my paintings. I was obliged to place some signs in order to get closer to the audience. These signs are loaded with meaning, as her figures become vehicles for shared experiences and complex subjects. The issue of mass exodus, for example, can appear as a mother and child in flight, their bodies seeming to quiver as rapid brushstrokes makeup their form and they are shown entrapped in a blast of color. politically-charged canvases of Palestinian Slieman Mansour. Existing between these two ends of the spectrum, Fayoumi s work has been thoroughly influential and equally iconic. In many ways she has been crucial to these two vastly different facets of Arab art, continuing to nurture its spirit while taking it to new territory. As to be expected of such an artist, her work is never stagnant. She constantly takes cues from her surroundings, refusing to limit herself: When I became pregnant I drew women in pregnant postures. When my children were born, I started drawing children. I now had a new topic that attracted me and transformed me. Children brought with them birds, pigeons and fish. It had now become a world of imagination and tales. My children were next to me drawing. This gave me something. Consequently not all of her compositions are devoted to portraying the catastrophic, a task that in itself can weigh on the psyche. For every painting capturing the ruin of life is another celebrating its rejuvenation. Of this Fayoumi says, We in the Arab world live in
a politically instable era. This instability has resulted in instable methods. Because I change, it s natural for the style to change too. A bleak reality is quickly led by hints of optimism, as she rarely paints a figure in complete isolation. A striking element of her art is that the intricacies of human interaction inevitably prevail over the alienation of even the most adverse conditions. Her latest series consisting of large acrylic canvases that are dominated by red and blue hues exemplifies this. Rapid brushstrokes and layered paint reflect a certain freedom a confidence that has been obtained through years of perfecting her craft. Traces of cubism appear in the outlines of her figures, yet seemingly spontaneous markings give an expressionist feel, demonstrating the myriad ways in which her work has traversed several international styles. This sophisticated combination of design and application of medium gives the impression of movement, as though the artist has captured subjects who are caught in motion. Fayoumi s paintings thus have a striking effect on viewers, as we are pulled into her vision of the world. It is this focus on forming an intimate relationship with her audience that distinguishes the artist s work, one that has evolved over years of careful execution and seeks to speak to all of us. Hers is a painting style that was born amidst the early stages of a movement seeking to challenge the ways in which art related to the masses. While visual culture becomes increasingly detached from our everyday realities, Fayoumi continues to seize hearts and minds with canvases that reflect an earnest call for the uplifting of global society. 8 A couple is shown embracing in an untitled composition, as frantic brushwork creates an overt tension and a solemn mood that is 9 accentuated by heavy areas of black paint. Their long faces are dressed in fear as they seem to escape an unidentified peril. Yet the artist leaves the setting ambiguous, providing no clues as to where her narrative takes place. This allows for countless interpretations. Given Fayoumi s reputation as a painter that engages viewers with detailed explorations and highly psychological themes, it is most likely a reference to a common experience such as the trauma of war that impacts so many. In a monumental diptych another couple is shown, though this time the artist s subjects are surrounded by a latticed metropolis. Again she presents an untitled composition, as though urging viewers to seek out the answers for themselves. Do her figures appear content or overcome by grief? Are they lovers or family members? It is difficult to tell, despite the involved features of her painting style and her labored composition. Perhaps that is the point the artist demonstrates a firm confidence in the viewer, appealing to human sensibilities and having faith in our perceptions. A number of portraits show a lone woman occupying the majority of the composition with an emphasis on the raw emotion of her face.
Asma Fayoumi Born in Amman, Jordan in 1943, Asma Fayoumi is one of Syria s leading female artists. A graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus, her formative years as a painter occurred in the 1960s with the emergence of a particular school of abstraction that was lead by the Italian artist and instructor Guido La Regina. Working alongside her fellow students Assad Arabi, Faek Dahdouh and Sakher Farzat, who later became recognized as seminal artists, her artistic career began at one of the most crucial periods of the regional art scene when modernist schools first displayed evidence of a gradual transition into contemporary modes of representation and a charged political climate urged regional culture to take up the call for social change. 11 Amidst this creative upheaval, Fayoumi s paintings are widely admired for their unique approach to depicting a range of subjects from mythological figures to the stark realities of war, she freely reflects an explosion of internal struggle, giving her work a profound sensitivity and intuition. A well-received solo show in Damascus in 1966 solidified her arrival on the local art scene, as it created a significant buzz. Since then she has been featured in countless solo and group exhibitions both at home and abroad. From her early days of depicting Damascene scenes using colorist principles of abstraction to her more recent expressionist works that combine her signature style of layered and labored figurative compositions, Fayoumi has remained committed to depicting the world around her with fervent imagination, making her a favorite among artists and the public alike.
