4 Message from the Chair I am often reminded of how fortunate JA is to enjoy the support of so many committed corporate partners, educators, volunteers and Board members who bring the JA learning experience to thousands of students in hundreds of communities coast-to-coast. Junior Achievement represents a truly unique partnership between business and educators that continues to thrive in its 51st year of operation in Canada. JA programs have never been more relevant than they are today, inspiring and educating young Canadians to pursue careers in business and reach their potential in a highly competitive and dynamic global economy. This is an investment in young Canadians and the future of business in Canada. Welcome and thank you to Ross Maund in his first year as CEO of Junior Achievement of Canada. Ross has brought tremendous business experience and leadership to the organization, working with a talented and dedicated group of JA staff and Charter leaders to provide effective management and drive operational excellence. Junior Achievement continues to execute key strategic initiatives focused on balanced and sustainable growth. For example, the national office and Charter organizations have collaborated on a new program framework and e-learning strategy that provides an exciting blueprint for JA s next wave of program renewal. JA has continued to invest in strengthening brand, leveraging Information Technology, implementing volunteer management best practices, and developing staff. JA s number one focus entering fiscal 2006/07 is to grow financial and volunteer resources to satisfy the strong demand for programs across Canada. The Junior Achievement of Canada Foundation and JA s Charter organizations across the country continue to grow existing donor relationships and seek new and diversified sources of funding and volunteers to ensure that all young Canadians who wish to participate in JA programs are given this important opportunity. 5 Message from the President & CEO I could not have asked for a better opportunity to positively impact Canada s future and the success of so many youth. As President & CEO of such a purposeful organization I look forward to contributing to the advancement of the JA mission. There has never been a more uncertain and unstable era in business than today. At the same time, there has never been a more dynamic and exciting era, so full of possibilities. Along with our international business peers, we are at crossroads in our ability to sustain and manage economic growth in a borderless trade economy. With a rapidly changing and expanding global village, organizations must think globally and compete locally. Canada is not immune to the challenge of developing and retaining the talent necessary to achieve productivity, competitiveness and prosperity. As a member of the Baby Boom generation, I can see how mass-retirement combined with a growing skills and talent gap means fewer people are entering the workforce at a time when they are needed most. Junior Achievement is an advocate for business in the community. By delivering business, economics and entrepreneurial education programs free-of-charge in elementary, middle and secondary schools we are part of the solution. Our potential as a society is in the hands of our youth the citizens, leaders and workforce of the future. By cultivating their skills and potential we show them the way to achieve their dreams. As a business community, we show them the way to become our productive and talented workforce. As mentors, we show them the way to secure the prosperity of our nation. As role models, we show them the way to create a life that enriches us all. 7 JA Continuum of Learning In today s rapidly changing and expanding global business market, repositioning our program content into a continuum of learning allows us greater flexibility to more effectively respond to the needs of our diverse student audiences across Canada. New Program Framework and e-learning Strategy Junior Achievement of Canada has developed a new program framework and e-learning strategy that will form the blueprint for future program development and ongoing program refresh. This is an outcome-based approach to ongoing curriculum design and development that has been adopted by educators across Canada. Programs will be consolidated into three learning streams to ensure a continuum of learning that is knowledge, skills and attitudes based. A student-centred experience will be possible by offering program modules in multiple delivery formats. Flexibility of training and delivery for volunteers, staff and students will be enhanced with optional blended learning formats. 8 CANJAC 2005 In August 2005, 154 students, 31 staff and 12 observers from 15 countries worldwide participated in the Canadian National Junior Achievement Conference (CANJAC) at Memorial University in St. John s Newfoundland. Junior Achievement of Newfoundland and Labrador hosted an international delegation from Argentina, Armenia, Bahamas, British Virgin Islands, Hong Kong, Germany, Guam, Northern Ireland, Norway, Romania, Russia, Sri Lanka, United Kingdom and the United States. With the theme of Leading the Way Ouvrir la Voie, participants spent the week team-building, gaining leadership and presentation skills, and having plenty of fun. Delegates were asked to determine how business could harness the vast amount of knowledge, skills and experience to become leaders in industry and the community. By examining the influences of marketing, process and production, and human resources, conference participants and volunteer staff generated multiple solutions to this question. CANJAC provides a forum to engage youth from around the world in a dynamic learning experience. Achievers take part in a week-long event to learn about business issues from business leaders and solve real time challenges in a team environment. Outstanding performance is rewarded and recognized while participants are encouraged to explore and expand their skills. 10 Our Volunteers H.E. Miskiman Leadership Award 2005 The H.E. Miskiman Leadership Award recognizes and honours Junior Achievement volunteers from all sectors of our organization who have advanced the goals of Junior Achievement both locally and nationally. This year s recipient is Britt Dysart, Chair of the Board of Directors, Junior Achievement of New Brunswick and Managing Partner with Stewart McKelvey law firm. Britt Dysart Britt participates wholeheartedly and gives generously of his time and resources in every fundraising and Charter event. Junior Achievement programs are delivered by thousands of enthusiastic business professionals, successful entrepreneurs and committed individuals each year who enjoy sharing their work experiences and knowledge with youth. Junior Achievement volunteers do much more than give back, they advance the education and future achievements of youth in communities across Canada - by opening young minds to their limitless potential as responsible citizens of a global village and leaders of a world economy. Britt Dysart is deserving of recognition as the H. E. Miskiman Award recipient for his active participation in governance, program and fundraising roles for Junior Achievement of New Brunswick (JA NB). Britt exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism. His dedication to Junior Achievement in the Atlantic Region and at a national level is commendable and an inspiration to us all. As Chair of both the JA New Brunswick Charter and the Council of JA of Fredericton, Britt played a vital role in establishing his firm as an in-kind service provider and platinum sponsor of the JA NB Business Hall of Fame. His devotion to JA Fredericton and later to JA New Brunswick has seen this charter grow with his guidance and direction. Under his leadership, the JA NB Charter increased student reach and ranked first in Canada for year over year revenue growth by His most far-reaching contribution was guiding JA through the regionalization process. He devoted hundreds of hours of his own time and thousands of dollars of his firm s legal expertise and resources. Britt graciously assisted JA nationally with legal advice and the development of processes to assist other areas of JA as they worked through regionalization. 11 A New Look Junior Achievement of Canada has undertaken a national rebrand initiative to further our objective of becoming One JA in Canada and globally as a leading Member Nation of the JA Worldwide organization. Rebranding JA in Canada More than just a change of appearance, this logo change marks the implementation of a rebrand plan that further emphasizes our purpose and mission as a primary stakeholder in securing the future prosperity of our nation. As a provider of free-of-charge business education for youth we are an advocate for business in the classroom and a solution for economic and community development. 13 Canadian Business Hall of Fame Established by Junior Achievement of Canada in 1979, the Canadian Business Hall of Fame recognizes business excellence and honours leading business men and women, past and present for their outstanding achievements in business and contributions to Canadian society. Each year, Laureates are selected for induction into The Canadian Business Hall of Fame for their enduring contributions to the economic development and prosperity of Canada. Nominated by their peers, inductees are selected by an independent Selection Committee representing Canada s foremost business, academic and media institutions, chaired by Mr. Guy Saint- Pierre, C.C. As leading examples of achievement in business and in life, these individuals have demonstrated the qualities necessary to ensure the success and competitiveness of Canada in a global marketplace. As Canadian Business Hall of Fame Laureates, they become mentors and role models for Junior Achievement students and Canada s future business leaders. This year we welcomed Sir Graham Day, Mr. Allan Richard Taylor and Mr. Michel Bélanger (posthumously) into the Canadian Business Hall of Fame. Members of the Canadian Business Hall of Fame are featured on display in the Allen Lambert Galleria, located at BCE Place in Toronto, Ontario. Hundreds of top executives gather each year at the annual Laureate Induction Ceremonies & Gala Dinner to celebrate the legacies and mentorship of role models who inspire Canada s future business leaders. Our Revenue Model In a competitive philanthropic environment, donors have more options for allocation of funds and expect maximum impact for their donation.
