3 Key component: Autonomous NED Processor & Storage Power Netwok Interface Radio Sensors Actuators Ambient Energy ~100µW Networked embedded devices (NED) turn consumer goods, assets and other objects into intelligent items These intelligent items use RF tags, sensors and actuators, have computing and communication capabilities NEDS could be autonomous and scavenge energy in their environment NEDs provide an accurate reflection of the real world, and enable almost real time interaction between the virtual world and real world. They communicate with each other as well as with the public infrastructures They offer services to and call on services from the future internet 3

8 Political challenges Incentives to deploy/use IoT to protect the environment, to decrease the carbon footprint, Protect privacy and freedom of citizens Regulate the exposure to wireless radiations European / Global harmonization of regulatory policies on the usage of the massive quantities of digital data captured by the IoT Enforce recycling of IoT components Identify risks of underlying technologies / organize long-term research with independent non-for-profit organizations Organize ethical debates: Risks of scoring citizen s behavior? Place of the human in an optimized and controlled world? IoT based individualism versus collective interest? 8

9 Technical challenges 1/2 Efficient internetworking of heterogeneous NEDs with the Internet. Horizontal access via a unified interface to information generated by the NEDs Highly composable information to generate new and innovative services. Mobility support, opportunistic networking, dynamic discovery & usage Integration of security and privacy protections at the NED, infrastructure and service levels. 9

10 Technical challenges 2/2 Holistic object discovery services that can combine object specifics with more dynamic information such as location, time, sensor information. Identity Management to assign identities to people, machines, objects. Resilience in the sense of the ability to respond to failure or interruptions. Self-sustainability (self-* features e.g. self-management, self-healing etc.) 10

12 Tangible results A highly scalable architectural framework with corresponding protocol solutions that enable easy plug and play integration of a large number of globally distributed WS&AN into a global system providing support for network and information management, security, privacy and trust and accounting. An open service interface and corresponding semantic specification to unify the access to context information and actuation services offered by the system for services and applications. Efficient islands of NEDs thanks to a set of energy aware connectivity, processing, security and management solutions. 12

13 New projects to make of IoT a reality Integrate the WS&ANs into the future networks Intranet of things SENSEI Create a common architectural reference model for the Internet of Things IoT-A Improve current LTE network design to better address requirements of IoT, e.g. M2M traffic EXALTED Provide an adequate environment to ensure easy experimentation with IoT technology and corresponding applications at appropriate scale SmartSantander Making the different fragmented communities work together towards a common vision for the IoT IoT-I, CASAGRAS
