Les Adjectifs réguliers: pour décrire une personne ou un objet singulier: Lucas est patient et calme. pluriel: Pierre et Marc sont patients et calmes. singulier: Léa est patiente et calme. pluriel: Eva et Julie sont patientes et calmes. 2 Les terminaisons (endings) des adjectifs réguliers: masc. fém. singulier - -e patient patiente pluriel -s -es patients patientes Les adjectifs qui se terminent (that end) en -e au restent (remain) le même (the same) au singulier: Exemples: Thomas est idéaliste. Élodie est idéaliste aussi. Les adjectifs qui se terminent (that end) en -s ou x au singulier restent (remain) le même au pluriel: Exemples: singulier: Raphaël est français. Kevin est sérieux. pluriel: Nicolas et Philippe sont français. Antoine et David sont sérieux. Pronunciation des adjectifs; Tournez à (turn to) la page 96 dans le livre CONTACTS. Adjectifs de nationalité: On est anglais japonais américain canadien (canadienne) français chinois mexicain italien (italienne) espagnol russe allemand suisse En français, les adjectifs de nationalité sont écrits (are written) en lettres minuscules (lower case), mais les noms (nouns) de nationalité sont écrits en lettres majuscules (upper case). Exemples: Il est français. Voici un Français (a Frenchman). Elle est anglaise. Voici une Anglaise (an Englishwoman). 2

3 À la pratique: 2) Take turns with your partner reading through all of the examples of adjectives above in their e and feminine forms. Pay close attention to the adjectives in the dialogue as well. Adjectives are words that modify nouns, both proper nouns and regular nouns, in gender (e or feminine), and number (singular or plural). In French, adjectives must always match the nouns they modify again in gender and number. Make sure you understand that the adjectives that you are learning are regular adjectives, i.e., add -e to the e form to form the feminine form, and add -s to the feminine form to make it plural. If the e form ends in s, it will have the same form in the e plural as it does in the singular. You will also notice that some adjectives end in e in the e singular. They will remain the same in the feminine singular. Do not add anything to change them except for adding an s to both the e and feminine singular forms to make them plural. Write down at least 6 of the adjectives your partner uses to describe him/herself after the response sentence: Je suis une personne Now switch roles after you have written down your partner s responses. You will notice that when you use une personne all of the adjectives have to be feminine whether you are a man or a woman. 8 À la pratique: 4) Read through and pronounce all of the irregular adjectives above by taking turns with your partner. Then ask each other why these adjectives are irregular. Notice that the e and feminine endings are quite different. Come up with explanations based on what you have learned so far concerning regular and irregular verb forms. You will notice that you will have to do more memory work to learn the irregular adjective forms in the e and feminine. Now write down 6 different complete sentences starting with Je suis + a e or feminine irregular adjective to describe yourself. Your partner will do the same. 9 Notez: Dans le français formel, l article indéfini des devient (becomes) de ( d ) quand il est suivi (followed) par (by) un adjectif. Adjectif après le nom: Vous êtes des étudiants brilliants. Adjectif avant le nom: Vous êtes de bons étudiants. À la pratique: 5) Please read aloud with your partner the explanations and examples above concerning the placement of adjectives that appear after or before a noun that they modify. You will notice, from the explanations above that describe the 2 ways that adjectives can be placed after or before a noun, that there is a much smaller list of adjectives that are placed before the noun they modify. Dr. Schmidt will give you a separate handout on these adjectives to help you learn them faster and separate them from the majority of French adjectives, which are placed after nouns. Now write 3 short sentences that contain a noun with an adjective after it, and 3 additional short sentences that contain a noun with an adjective before it. Il/elle est est utilisé pour indiquer le lieu (location) ou l origine: Òu est Christine? Elle est à l université. Elle est de Paris. 11 À la pratique: 6) Read through all of the explanations and examples above with your partner about the differences between the structures, Il/Elle est and C est Please note that the plural forms of these structures are: Ils/Elles sont and Ce sont These structures can also be used with the negative expression ne/n pas. You will also notice that a fundamental difference between these 2 structures is that C est and Ce sont are followed by articles used before the nouns while Il/Elle est and Ils/Elles sont do not require the use of articles before the nouns or adjectives that follow them in the sentences. Now write down 3 examples of each of the 2 different structures you are learning below. As you are each writing down your examples, discuss them with your partner.
