2 YANN STOFER A HOUSE IS NOT A HOME A house is not a home immediately presents a vulnerable subject, with no control over its representation, transported through vast landscapes by unconscious forces. It s in the attention given to this form of sleepwalking that Yann Stofer s work finds its aesthetic drive: the intrepid moves forward with eyes closed. In the meanders of memory drawn by the dream machine, cottony perceptions of the fluctuations of light, changing lanes on a snowy highway, speeding up and slowing down. Intimacy, home are flexible notions. I travel, at their expense.the light fades, then becomes artificial. The field of vision has narrowed; the landscape has disappeared, swallowed by the nighttime sky and its fantastic, almost gothic feel. [ ] Obstinately, the photographer s work and the viewer s experience intertwine. Through the recurrence of the motifs the road and its shoulders, places designed for entertainment and celebration, the bedroom and of the faces the friends the photographer made over time the reader is invited to follow the steps of the author rummaging in his memory. This repetitive structure of the work, resembling a dwelled-upon, fractioned remembrance, is far from being a closed and stabilised system. The nostalgia one feels when seeing these images is not a yearning for something past. On the contrary, the beings and things never come back to themselves, not even in memory, not even in a dream. C est dans l attention portée à cette forme de somnambulisme que le travail de Yann Stofer trouve son ressort esthétique : l intrépide avance les yeux clos. Aux boucles de la mémoire que pétrit la machine à rêver se mêlent les perceptions cotonneuses des fluctuations de la lumière, des changements de voies du véhicule sur une autoroute enneigée, de ses accélérations et ralentissements. L intime, le «chez soi», revêt une géométrie variable. Je voyage, à ses dépends. La lumière décroît, puis devient artificielle. Le champ de vision s est rétréci, le paysage a disparu, avalé dans un ciel nocturne aux accents fantastiques, quasi gothiques. [ ] Avec obstination, le travail du photographe et l expérience du spectateur s entrelacent. Par la récurrence des motifs la route et ses bordures, les lieux dédiés aux loisirs et à la fête, la chambre à coucher et des visages ces proches dont le photographe s est entouré au fil du temps le lecteur est amené à rejouer le cheminement de l auteur fouillant sa mémoire. Ce phénomène de répétition qui structure l ouvrage, l apparentant à un souvenir fractionné que l on ressasse, est loin d être un système clos et stabilisé. La nostalgie que l on peut ressentir à la vue de ces images n est pas celle d un état de fait révolu. Au contraire, les êtres et les choses ne reviennent jamais à eux-mêmes, pas même en souvenir, pas même en rêve. 3 YANN STOFER BIOGRAPHY BIOGRAPHIE Yann Stofer Yann Stofer (born 1977) is a French photographer. He works in the tradition of photographers who focus the camera on their own generation. From an early age his mentors were skateboarders and musicians. Over the past ten years, his pictures documented his life with his band Adam Kesher and relationships with a realist snapshot aesthetic-representing a youth culture avoiding fictionalisation or voyeurism. A House Is Not A Home is the first monograph presenting an overview of Stofer's artistic practice. Along with his own work, Yann Stofer has contributed editorial portfolios to Dior, Hermès, Nike, Wow Magazine, Technikart, Redux magazine...
