Microsoft Surface Operation and Maintenance Guide WARNING: Failure to properly set up, use, and care for the Microsoft Surface unit can increase the risk of serious injury or death, or damage to the Microsoft Surface unit. Read this manual and the manuals of any accessories for important safety and health information. Keep all manuals for future reference. For replacement manuals, call the Surface Customer Support number provided on the back cover. WARNING: No User-Serviceable Parts Inside Do not attempt to take apart, open, service or modify the internal components of the Surface unit. Doing so could present the risk of electric shock, fire, or damage to the Surface unit. Any evidence of any attempt to open and/or modify the Surface unit, including any peeling, puncturing, or removal of any of the labels, may void the Limited Warranty and render the Surface unit ineligible for authorized repair. Please refer to Microsoft Surface Customer Support for service. The I/O connections and lamp access door are considered to be operator-accessible areas. Removal of either the I/O connections housing or lamp access door is not subject to this warning. Page 6

Microsoft Surface Operation and Maintenance Guide Installation Caution: Select a Location for Your Surface Unit Place the Surface unit on a dry floor surface that: 1. Is flat and level 2. Is stable and not likely to allow the unit to tip over 3. Allows all four of the unit s feet to be in contact with the floor surface 4. Is not likely to allow the unit to slip or slide 5. Is clean and free of dust and debris. Caution: Surface Display Do not sit or stand on the horizontal table top display of the unit. You could damage the top of the unit or risk injury. Do not place objects weighing more than 180 lbs (82 kg) on the table top surface. You could damage the top of the unit. Do not apply more than 50 PSI (3.5 kg/cm 2 ) pressure to the top of the unit, or allow objects to exert such a force on it. You could damage the top of the unit. Operator-Accessible I/O Connections Some versions of the Surface unit come with the I/O connections exposed, while other versions come with acrylic panels on all sides of the unit, including the end that houses the I/O connections. On versions of the unit with the acrylic panels, the I/O connections and lamp replacement access door are accessible by temporarily removing the end panel cover which protects them. This end panel is secured with two captive screw-lock fasteners. The other three side panels that are secured with Torx screws comprise the Surface unit s safety enclosure and must not be removed by anyone other than a Microsoft-authorized service technician. Caution: Operate the Unit with End Panel in Place The end panel cover must be in place during normal unit operation in public areas, as it forms a part of the protective unit enclosure. Operation of the product without this cover in place increases the risk of fire, risk of product damage and can create excessive radio interference. Replace the end panel cover once you have configured your unit and its interconnecting cables. Removing the End Panel The I/O connections area is on the short side of the unit that has the On/Standby button on the underside in the bottom left corner. Page 7

Microsoft Surface Operation and Maintenance Guide There are two narrow kick plates that extend along the underside of the long sides of the Surface unit. The kick plates (labeled as 2 in the following figure) are indented under and run parallel to the acrylic panels (labeled as 1 in the following figure). The ends of the kick plates curve around the underside corners of the unit, extend a few inches, and stop before the exposed heat vents. You must lift the ends of the unit to remove the kick plates. You must remove both kick plates to access the cylindrical fasteners that release the end panel. To remove each kick plate 1. On the end of the kick plate that curves around the short end of the unit, press the end in and pull the kick plate down and away. 2. Repeat step 1 on the other end of the kick plate. 3. The kick plate is connected to the long side of the unit by two dart-like clips that plug (or snap) into connectors on the unit frame. Gently pull the kick plate out from the center of the long side. 4. Repeat the previous steps to remove the kick plate on the other side. Page 8

Microsoft Surface Operation and Maintenance Guide To remove the end panel that covers the I/O connections 1. The captive cylindrical fasteners can be loosened by hand or by using a flat or Phillips screwdriver. Loosen them by turning counter-clockwise until they pull away from the chassis. Do this for both fasteners. 2. Grasp the end panel with your hands placed on the top and bottom surfaces. Push downward until the slide tabs disengage from the frame. 3. Pull the panel away and set it aside, being careful not to scratch the acrylic surface. Page 9

Microsoft Surface Operation and Maintenance Guide 4. The I/O connections are now exposed for interconnection with your home or venue networking and entertainment systems. Caution: Reattach the End Panel Before Operating the Unit The end panel cover is part of the unit s protective enclosure. To reduce the risk of fire, product damage, and excessive radio interference, always replace the end cover after you have configured your unit and its interconnecting cables. Do not operate the system without the end panel cover. To reattach the end panel cover, reverse the above steps: 1. Line the panel up against the frame, allowing the slide tabs to engage with their slots in the frame. Push the panel upwards approximately ½ inch (10mm). 2. Check to ensure that the top edges align evenly with the long side panels. Secure the captive fasteners by pushing in and turning clockwise until hand-tightened. Page 10

Microsoft Surface Operation and Maintenance Guide Care and Maintenance Caution: Cables and Cords Arrange all cables and cords, including the AC power cord, so that people and pets are not likely to trip over or accidentally pull on them as they move around or walk through the area. To avoid damaging the AC power cord: 1. Protect the power cord from being walked on. 2. Protect cords from being pinched or sharply bent, particularly where they connect to the power outlet and the Surface unit. 3. Do not jerk, knot, sharply bend or otherwise abuse the power cords. 4. Do not expose power cords to sources of heat. 5. If the power cord becomes damaged in any way, stop using it and contact Microsoft Surface Customer Support for replacement. Caution: Prevent the Microsoft Surface Unit from Overheating Do not block any ventilation openings on the Surface unit, including the inlets located just below the tabletop surface and the air exhaust vents located at the bottom of the two narrow ends of the enclosure. Do not place the unit near any heat sources, such as radiators, heat ducts, registers, stoves, or heating appliances. Caution: Avoid Smoke and Dust Do not use the Surface unit in smoky or dusty locations. Smoke and dust can damage the unit, particularly the DVD/CD-ROM drive. Cleaning the Surface Unit To clean a Surface unit, you will need: Dishwashing liquid soap, such as Ultra Dawn or Ultra Joy, that does not include alcohol. Do not use automatic dishwasher soap, window cleaners, or any cleaner that contains isopropyl alcohol. De-ionized or distilled water. Two (2) plastic spray bottles. Microfiber cleaning cloths, such as 3MTM Scotch Brite High-Performance Cleaning Cloth Do not use paper towels or wipes with alcohol-based solution. Improper cleaning may damage the Surface unit or void the warranty. Page 11

Microsoft Surface Operation and Maintenance Guide To clean the tabletop 1. Fill one spray bottle with a mixture of 5% dishwashing liquid and 95% water. 2. Fill the other spray bottle with water. 3. Spray some cleaning solution on a cloth, and then gently wipe the Surface unit. Do not spray the cleaning solution directly on the Surface unit. Wipe up any excess fluid or spills immediately. Do not use pressure when you are wiping the Surface unit to avoid scratching the surface with larger dust or dirt particles that might be on the tabletop. 4. Use a clean, dry cloth and wipe off the tabletop completely. 5. Clean the Surface tabletop with a clean cloth damped in de-ionized water to remove any remaining soap. Do not apply water directly on the Surface unit. Wipe up any excess fluid or spills immediately. 6. Use a clean, dry cloth with light pressure to dry the Surface tabletop thoroughly. To clean the side panels Use the same cleaning procedure as described for the tabletop to clean the acrylic side panels and kick plates. You can either spray the solution on the cloth or spray the panels directly, but do not spray directly into the air intake vents that run around the top of the panels below the tabletop. WARNING: Connect to AC Power Electrical Safety As with many other electrical devices, failure to take the following precautions can result in serious injury or death from electric shock or fire, or damage to the Surface unit. Select an appropriate power source for your Microsoft Surface unit: 1. Use only the AC power cord that came with your Surface unit or one that you received from an authorized repair center. If you need a replacement AC power cord, contact Microsoft Surface Customer Support. 2. The AC power cord must be connected to an electrical outlet that is located nearby the equipment, within reach of the power cord. The outlet must be easily accessible. The power cord must not be placed in an area where it could become a trip hazard or be exposed to possible damage. 3. Confirm that your electrical outlet provides the type of power indicated on the Surface unit (in terms of voltage [V] and frequency [Hz]). If you are not sure of the type of power supplied to your home or venue, consult a qualified electrician. 4. Do not use non-standard power sources, such as generators or inverters, even if the voltage and frequency appear acceptable. Only use AC power provided by a standard wall outlet. 5. Do not overload your AC wall outlet, extension cord, power strip, or other electrical receptacle. Confirm that they are rated to handle the total current (in amps [A]) drawn by the Surface unit (indicated on the product label) and any other units that are on the same circuit. Page 12

Microsoft Surface Operation and Maintenance Guide Replacing the Projector Lamp Assembly Caution: The lamp assembly can be extremely hot To reduce the risk of injury due to excessive heat, always allow sufficient time for the lamp assembly to cool down after the Microsoft Surface unit has been turned off. A minimum waiting period of 15 minutes is needed. Ensure safe heat conditions before you remove the assembly. Lamp Assembly If the display brightness of your Microsoft Surface unit diminishes, or if the display is completely dark even after the unit is turned on, you might need to change the lamp assembly. The mean life expectancy of the lamp assembly is 6,000 hours. The lamp in the lamp assembly does not typically burn out suddenly. Instead, you should notice that the output on the Surface display dims gradually over time. To verify that you need to change the lamp assembly, make sure the Surface unit is turned on and warmed up. Then, check the grating at the right end of the heat exhaust vent on the bottom of the I/O connections to see if you can see a blue light (see the following figure). (You do not have to remove the acrylic panel that covers the I/O connections to see the blue light.) If the blue light does not appear even though the Surface unit is turned on, you should replace the lamp assembly. Before you replace the lamp assembly, contact Surface Support for directions about how you can restore display quality on your Surface unit. If you need a new lamp assembly, you can order it from Surface Support for ground or overnight delivery. Page 13

Microsoft Surface Operation and Maintenance Guide Replacing the Lamp Assembly After you receive the new lamp assembly from Microsoft, complete the following steps to remove the old lamp assembly, insert the new lamp assembly, and return the old lamp assembly to Microsoft for proper disposal. To complete these steps, you will need a #2 Phillips screwdriver. 1. If the Surface unit is on, turn it off. 2. Unplug the Surface unit and wait for approximately 15 minutes for the system and lamp assembly to cool down. 3. If the Surface unit has acrylic panels, remove the panel to expose the I/O connections. For more information, see the Removing the End Panel section earlier in this document. 4. Locate the lamp access door (labeled 1 in the following figure), and then remove the two thumb screws on the right side of the door (labeled 2 in the following figure) by turning them counterclockwise by using a Phillips screwdriver. 5. Remove the lamp access door by swinging it open from the right side and then pulling the door away from the tabs on the left side. You can now access the base of the lamp assembly. WARNING: There is an interlock switch that is connected to the two screws on the lamp access door. If you open the door while the Surface unit is still plugged in and turned on, this switch stops power to the lamp assembly. This switch is for your safety. Do not disable this interlock. Disabling the interlock switch will increase the risk of serious injury or death from electric shock or fire, or damage to the Surface unit. Page 14

Microsoft Surface Operation and Maintenance Guide 6. On the base of the lamp assembly, loosen the two thumbscrews by turning them counterclockwise. 7. Grip the finger holes on the base of the lamp assembly, and then slowly pull it out of the Surface unit. Caution: To reduce the risk of injury due to excessive heat, be careful not to touch the sides of the lamp assembly because it might be hot. 8. Set the old lamp assembly to the side. Do not throw away the lamp assembly because it must be disposed of according to environmental regulations. 9. Carefully remove the new lamp assembly from its box. Save the box so you can use it to send the old lamp assembly back to Microsoft for proper disposal. Caution: Be careful to not touch the bulb of the lamp assembly because doing so might cause it to burn-out prematurely. Page 15

Microsoft Surface Operation and Maintenance Guide 10. Hold the lamp assembly so that the base of the lamp assembly is facing toward you, the text on the base is upside down, and the black power connector is on the upper-left side of the metal siding of the lamp assembly. 11. Slowly slide the new lamp assembly through the opening that you removed the old lamp assembly from. Caution: The lamp assembly fits only one way into the Surface unit. Do not force the lamp assembly if it is not fitting into the unit. Forcing the lamp assembly might damage the lamp assembly or the Surface unit. 12. On the base of the lamp assembly, tighten the two thumbscrews by turning them clockwise. Do not over tighten the thumbscrews. 13. Insert the lamp access door into the tabs on the left side of the opening, and then swing the door to the right to close it. 14. On the right side of the lamp access door, insert the two screws by turning them clockwise by using a Phillips screwdriver. Do not over tighten the screws. 15. Plug in the Surface unit, turn it on, and verify that the lamp assembly is now working and that the display on the Surface unit is working correctly. If the display is still not working correctly, contact Surface Support for additional assistance. 16. If the Surface unit has acrylic panels, add the panel to cover the I/O connections. For more information, see the Reattach the I/O End Panel Before Operating the Unit section earlier in this document. 17. Dispose of the old lamp assembly by sending it back to Microsoft or by completing the directions in the following section: Disposal of Waste, Batteries, Mercury Discharge Lamp, and Electrical and Electronic Equipment. Page 16

Microsoft Surface Operation and Maintenance Guide Disposal of Waste, Batteries, Mercury Discharge Lamp, and Electrical and Electronic Equipment This symbol on the product, lamp, batteries, or packaging means that this product and any batteries or lamps it contains must not be disposed of with your household waste.
